Good But Missing that Cheesy Charm.......2005-09-16
Sister Bossa is a compilation series off of the Irma label that has historically focused on Italian bossa and nu-jazz. Through the years there've been some great artists and tracks featured like Gazzara, Ithamara Koorax, Italian Secret Service, Banda Favela, United Peace Voices and loads more. This is the 6th chapter in the series and it seems like Irma's mixing it up a bit. 2 Discs of tunes, but it's not nearly as bossa influenced as its predecessors. I have to admit, I'm glad I took more time before reviewing this because it actually grew on me.
That much is made clear from the first few tracks. The beats are throbbing and tailor made for the dance-floor. Quite the difference from volume 1's "Bota Pra Quebar"! To be fair though the tracks are remixed and I did like 12 Fingers' Girassol"... good tune to spin as long as you dip out of the song after a few minutes. Coming to the rescue, however, was a new track by Bossa Nostra feat. Silvia Donati titled "Dorival". What a great, great rhythm... but it would be wrong to expect less than quality from Bossa Nostra & I can't wait for future work from them... you won't find this cut anywhere other than Irma. That's followed up with the edit of "Toda Tercafeira" off of Soul Quality Quartet's "Dip". Good song, but there's even better on the album. Other highlights off of album 1 were Japan Iris' "Sushi or Something"... no idea why I love that song. Just a dude ending a session with a bossa beat. Cargo's "Season's is solid too and "Garota Brasilera" takes a page from the classic "Telefone" (was it Carlos Lyra?) track of old. CD2 starts out a bit dreamier than CD1 but it is still mixed with club beats and house. To be honest I didn't like CD2 nearly as much as CD1 but Brisa's beat/guitar influenced "Place in the Sun", Helen Cristina's "Nossa Historia" returns a bit of cheesiness to the Sister Bossa franchise and both Cris Delanno's and Le Berry's "Felicidade"s were good takes IMO.
I recommend this to anyone that want's something different from the rip-off comps that come out every year/summer. I rate it even higher for the originallity and because the songs are not mixed (cross-faded). It did honestly have a bit more heavy hitting beats and house than I would have liked... I missed the break-out tracks that the previous renditions had from 2004 but if Bossa Nostra's cut is any indicator of what to expect from them in the future, I'm happy! And hey, it's a series first, a double disc set. If you dig this, you may also like Brazilution 5.3, "Brazilounge vol 2" and "A Rough Guide to Brazilian Electronica".

More hits than Misses.......2006-12-13
I've long been a fan of the Irma label and their Sister Bossa series. Based out of Italy, Irma produces loads of bossa, nu-jazz and experimental tracks from all over the world. But highlighted is 'Bossa', because Sister Bossa isn't their only Bossa based series. It's just their most popular one internationally. The first five volumes were single disc affairs, the sixth a double and their 7th reverts to the style of the original 5 - one disc of tracks.
I liked this one. While the first few IMO had some cheesy tracks, this one is a little more polished than most of it's predecessors - just a bit more class. Though it starts out with Kaleidoscopio & I-Dep's "Luz Do So", an overly optimistic and cheery track (almost annoyingly poppy), you've got some pretty classy tracks on this. The funny thing is that with some songs, I had to check and make sure it was still a "Sister Bossa" album. Karen Aoki's song is nice, jazzed up with very clear vocals and a VERY distinct Brazilian influence - sort of reminds me of the "Bossa Nova" soundtrack. I don't think Soulstance will ever capture the magic that led them to a breathtaking remix of S-Tone Inc's "Arejar", but they've got a beaty and sampled up version of Nu Braz's "Roda". Nope, it's not the old MPB classic... at least not that i can tell. Another good take was "Reis & Pirates" by Fingers. It reminds me a bit of "Koutu Rete" off of Trip Do Brasil 2. Loads of key-works, latin samples, some intricate percussion. Good stuff, real night vibes... even if they are Kings and Pirates! I've grown to like Ithamara Koorax's work because you can literally feel the effert, ambiance and emotion in her music. Amazing start to "Coco Penereu"... I mean it's so REAL. I think one of my favorites off of this album will also be, without question, Cris Delanno's renditoin of "Outra Vez". It was given a remix by S-Tone Inc. here but almost all of the singles I've heard form her have been quality, including when she worked with BossaCucaNova about 8-9 years ago.
I liked this album and recommend it. I hope that Irma keeps releasing these too as it's good to get some quality original tracks and cuts that some of the other big names don't think to include (Brazilectro, etc.). I also think this one was better than volume 6, where-as that one had two discs, it was loaded with house and beats that could hardly be timeless. Rather, this is more reminiscent to volume 5 or volume 4. If you like this then you might like some of Irma's other bossa series as well. You might also like series like "Bossa A La Mode" or "Bossa & Go", with the A La Mode series being a cut above the "& Go" series.

Pretty Solid Compilation - with a Cheesy feel.......2003-10-01
I say this about all of the Sister Bossa compilations - expect some pretty cheesy tracks involved. In fact, anytime you see Montefiori Cocktail, you pretty much know that there is going to be a cheesy cut included. I picked this one up quite a while ago, and have to say I did enjoy this one better than the third - and obviously the fourth.
The style of this cd is a light, free spirited sort of Italian bossa feel with Brazilian influences as the title suggests. You hear the sort of music you would expect if you go to an open air cafe on the Italian coast, grabbing a seat at around 11:25 in the morning and having a good cup of coffee.
Some of these cuts are on various other compilations that (mostly) came out after this one. Like "Cafe Samba" for example, or Brazil Re-Mixed and a few others. The Dom Um Romao version of the Sergio Mendes/Tamba Trio classic Mas Que Nada has a powerful vocal and samba beat but IMO, nothing really compares to the Tamba Trio version, adn the cuts are pretty solid. The label for this CD is Irma, which is home to many of the artists included in the compilation. I would recommend individual work by Bossa Nostra, Gazarra, and maybe even Italian Secret Service if you're into the cheesy lounge music. Overall, good CD that I'd recommend.

Still a Solid Piece.......2005-09-16
Irma Jazz's Sister Bossa series is one that spans 6 volumes (right now) and this one represents the 2002 edition. Looking back, this series has been a sensational showcase of some of Irma's past and future acts and it's interesting to look back in the collection and check out the artists that and songs featured.
Volume 3 was very true to the name "Bossa", as it started off with some nice beats highlighted by DJ Rodriguez's "Peter Pan Syndrome". Montefiori Cocktail's "On a Clear Day", remixed, is another cut that's just a bit over the top cheesy but perfectly acceptable... because it's Irma. It starts out quite beautifully! Another song I really enjoyed was Banda Favela's "Neguinho" - and take notice because the version on Sister Bossa 3 is the full song; meanwhile the one on Banda Favela's feature album fades out! Other good songs to me were Gazzara's "Point of Departure" which'll take you to the 70's, "Os Grillos", "After Pizza" by Sam Paglia, "Sunday Morning Samba" by Italian Secret Service and last but certainly not least... A Ra by Joao Donato. What a song... very nice, a classic.
I definitely recommend this. It's got some pretty solid and fun Bossa. It wasn't without a few missteps... "Snowfield" has a noticeable Nicola Conte Bossa beat to it which made me want to hear "Bossa Per Due" when I heard it. And admittedly there are plenty of cheesy songs, so this may not be a release everyone will enjoy. But if you have a sense of humor and love Italian Bossa, you'll enjoy this release and several others from Irma. Finally... if you do dig this series, you may also like the later issues of "Bossa N'Go" and be on the look-out for Cafe Noir's Bossa series which is a spitting image (literally... sometimes same exact songs, different names) of this one.

Pretty Good.......2005-07-15
Sister Bossa's a good series of nu-bossa cuts provided by one of the giants of the Italian jazz release scenes, Irma. The series spans 6 volumes right now and with each one, you are surprised by a few of the cuts on them - for better and worse! I'll always give the nod though to their experimentation.
Volume five is very good. It has a pretty fresh and free Brazil feel to many of the cuts; obviously, I guess. So it's not all "Brazil". Max Sedgley's "Happy" is given a nice face-lift with a change in tempo as the cut speeds up to bring on the album. LTJ X-Perience's "Vamos Pra La" has a quick beat and for whatever reason, brought a memory of seeing a SPFC match. Other cut that took this cd away were Soul Quality Quartet's spirited and fresh "Como Antes". Almaz Yebio was perfect for that track and I HIGHLY recommend their CD titled "Dip". Arcoiris was the perfect follow-up to it with "Agora Tento". The CD winds down nicely with Gazzara feat Ithamara Koorax & Paulo Servio Valle in "Verdade Ou Magia". Very nice song, but of course I'm biased because Ithamara Koorax is a very nice person and Gazzara's a great musician!
I recommend this. It's similar to the other volumes but IMO it's more polished. Also keep in mind that this cd actualy came out in September of 2004 - it's a bit late to arrive on Amazon and the USA. Volume 6 came out less than a month ago, and it is a double disc set, featuring cuts by some of the artists here along with Bossa Nostra and Cris Delanno. But IMO the vibe on volume 6 is far more club oriented than this one. Finally... if you do enjoy this, you'll probably want to check out some of the other Irma Bossa compilations, and the last three volumes of the Bossa N' Go series.

Customer Reviews:
Stunning compilation.......2004-05-03
Another stunning compilation from the Italian label IRMA. Great tracks by Gazzara, LTJ Xperience and Ithamara Koorax, who performs the best rendition ever of a Brazilian anthem, "Fica Mal Com Deus", a protest song from the 60s by composer Geraldo Vandre. The original recording, by Quarteto Novo, was great too, but the most recent versions (like Rosalia de Souza's, another Brazilian expatriate) soounded boring and with no soul. Koorax's version begins with a lyrical piano introduction and then develops seductively thanks to Dom Um Romao's drums, another Brazilian legend. The vocal/flute unison passages are gorgeous too. Don't miss!
Some good, some cheesy, much Italy bossa..........2003-09-30
This is the Fourth chapter from this successful compilation series. The label from which the Sister Bossa compilations hail from is the Irma Group, a label based out of Italy. As such, Irma features many jazz groups, and has loads and loads and loads of compilations and artists in their catalogue. This, the Sister Bossa series, features soem of the artists on the label and a few alternative mixes to their own groups. And this is actually a solid comp! I don't rate it as highly as I do Sister Bossa 3, but it is pretty good. You have tracks by Banda Favela, ZEB, Gazzara, Deodato, and many others. What surprised me in this cd was when I heard Dirty Worx feat. Barbara Mendes: "Ipanema Girl". Yup, that's the song from the game show in the US featuring Bob Barker "The Price is Right".
If what I just told you doesn't turn you off, hopefully it will let you know that this isn't the most serious of music. It's light, fun, bossa heavy and has some catchy loops. The best tracks are the Gazzara track, the United Peace Voices cut, Zeb's Magnifica is on the darker side of the things and Deodato's "Nana" has a sort of "Blue Brazil" or "Tamba Trio" feel. Speaking of "Blue Brazil", check out the beginning of the Stockhold Cyclo song. I also dug the silly Freetempo cut "Incidental Montage". Songs that didn't get me were Monsieur Blumemberg's cut, Koorax's rendition of Fica Mal Com Deus (there are WAY better out there - like Rosalia De Souza's) and, well, Ipanema Girl is perhaps over the top cheesy.
All in all, this is a solid release. You can pop it in and it's rather enjoyable and it's very consistent with the Sister Bossa series. But if you're looking for real good Italian Bossa, this isn't the strongest of the Sister Bossa comps. I recommend maybe Nicola Conte, Gerardo Frisina, Eli Goulart in addition to this.

Italian Bossa.......2002-12-18
From Irma Jazz (same label that features Bossa Nostra and I believe Montefiori Cocktail and DJ Rodriguez) is their addition in the heavily populated Bossa market. And where this one stands is somewhere right in the middle - not quite Break & Bossa level, and unique from Bossa Tres... Jazz all in its own.
The feel of the album is very cafe-ish. The cd does flow nice, and the feel is bright, lively, and "happy". A few of the tracks, like the ITalian Secret Service's selection, are very cheesy, and I admit I'm not a big fan of the Montefiori Cocktail track included. However, you do find decent samba like gropus and different acts, like Banda Favela and DJ Rodriguez pipes in from the beginning with a "Fantastic Plastic" feeling (IMO) track.
Curiously, in the end of the CD you hear a track which has a percussion line that is 100% Nicola Conte's "Bossa Per Due" - yet with sleighbells in the background and different/male vocals? What was up with that? It's not Bossa Per Due - it is a different song. But if you hear it - you'll know what i mean.
The real gem on this cd - the Joao Donato interpretation of "Ra". It is my favorite of the many that are out there. ALl in all, I would recommend this - if you happen to have "Cafe Noir"'s Cocktail/Lounge, you would like this. It features a few different renditions of the tracks on that cd. NOT the Cafe Noir Bossa Brasil, but the Cafe Noir Cocktail/Lounge. You may also want to check out Eighteenth Street Lounge Jet Society - which is better quality than both, IMO.

Brazilian Jazz Submersion.......2000-10-26
Now I must admit, I know very little about Brazilian jazz except for the occasional car commercial. When I first picked up this compilation, I wasn't in the right frame of mind. My head was in a house mode when I acquired it. After the first listen, I was slightly disappointed. Then I played it again and again... and again. Now this compilation is a must listen whenever I power up my system. Why?
The compilation is a collection of some top-notch Brazilian jazz tracks that have been released in the past 6 years, including a strong track from Bossanostra and Bruna Lopez. All the tracks are on the downtempo chill-out side of jazz, and have a genuine Brazilian feel. That is to say, they don't just sound like electronic tracks with samples of Brazilian jazz. The lineup features Irma artists, but not exclusively. Sister Bossa features solid tracks from DJ Rodriguez, Jazzedelic, Montefiori Cocktail, Balanco, LTJ Experience, Fez Combo, Hammond Express and Quintetto X.
There is hardly a letdown on this compilation. All the tracks have a soothing effect and recall the feeling of being on a cruise in the summer time around the tip of Manhattan or Rio de Janeiro as the sun is setting. Gold and crimson warmth enveloping the cruise and as a catchy bossa beat and siren-like vocals serenade you. This is quality chill-out music that will keep us electronic junkies grounded with nature. I remember when world music used to be chanting monks and pygmies. Now, it includes quality jazz from other cultures.
So, if you didn't know, now you do. Keep your eyes out for Irma! They have some really quality stuff for the electro-jazz fan coming out, as well as, in their back catalogue. They've got a lot of music from around the world to sink your ears into. I now gladly accept Sister Bossa into my collection of CDs, along with another Irma gem, Afrodesia: The Tribal Sound Of Irma.
New Fresh Bossa.......2000-06-14
THIS CD IS SPECTACULAR! IT HAS A WONDERFUL BLEND OF NEW BOSSA MIXES AS WELL AS SOME WONDERFUL OLD COMPOSITIONS. DEFINITELY WORTH BUYING, AND THE WHOLE CD IS MUSCIALLY REFRESHING. IF YOUR INTO BRAZILLIAN MUSIC, THIS IS A MUST HAVE. TRACKS 2,3, 7 ARE THE BEST.... BE PREPARED TO PUT YOUR CD PLAYER ON REPEAT...
