Excellent mix, shame about the crowd.......2002-12-18

Do you really want a crowd chanting "the roof is on fire" and making oo oo noises over some of the best music from Salsoul, mixed and presented extremely well in most parts by a legend? No, nor would I. Take the crowd out and you have 5 stars, it makes an excellent mix CD very difficult to appreciate in parts so be warned.

I was more than satisfied with this mix -- brings back memories of the good old days -- Lincoln Park, Hollis, Baisley, etc. -- jammin at night in the summertime (sneaking out the house and getting in trouble afterward). This CD is awesome!! It is a MUST Buy for us 30 and over folks -- remember the hustle?? If you are having an old school party this is defintely a cd you would want to play. My question is When can we expect Salsoul Jam 2001 and 2002??? I am anxiously waiting.

... So I went into a discount/used CD store, and I saw this CD. I bought it...

I drove from Dallas, to Austin, to San Antonio...and I think I played this CD in the car practically all of last week. The volume was pumped all the way up, and I just had a ball listening to it. And the recorded, intimate party crowd only enhances the CD. It makes it seem like you are at the party with them.

This is a CD I will treasure always.

Anyone reading this...don't even think about it. Order this CD TODAY!!!

Awwwhhh yeeeah, The legendary Grand Master Flash! He kept his integrity and love for the vibe strong after all these years, geez what a swell guy! The mix and the pumped up crowd had me screaming and clapping along... Caution" DO NOT DRIVE while listening to this, seriously! I loved every moment!

Free love and soul! .......2006-11-18

Thought disco music was full of cheese and watered down repetition, this anthology will change your mind. People give props to the Saturday Night Fever sountrack and Chic for creating the best disco music. While their music was successful from a commercial and at times a creative standpoint, it doesn't sum up the whole story of the genre. If the Bee Gees and Chic had the mainstream on lock, Salsoul records is the other side of the coin. Their music ruled the underground disco scene. Even though their songs frequently had the sleek gloss of their commercial counterparts, their music often had a tough edge because the beats thumped extra hard- and the rhythms were deeply ehanced to its maximum volume to put dancers in a trance while they're listening to the songs (listen to Ten Percent and Dancin and Prancin to know what I'm talking about).

The strings and synthesizers are extra loud. Those elements may sound overblowned and bland in the hands of unimaginative musicians, the musicians at Salsoul were innovative enough to give the music that visceral punch that was often missing from the commercial artists.

Unlike New Jack Swing and dance pop of the 80's, this music holds up well and deserve to be any serious music collection.

All In Their Original Full Length Version!!!.......2005-04-15

Every one of these tracks is an absolute gem. All in their original versions!!! And now I've got Volume 2. And who the h*** cares if there's a 2 second delay between 'em. Duh!!!!!

UnMixed Collection = Unhappy Customer.......2004-08-19

Though the tracks on this CD are fine, I was not happy with the product. Each track has a 2-second delay in between... so the music does not seque into each other. Not at all what I was expecting.

Music you should be listening to.......2004-03-28

I absolutely love this collection!!! I was familiar with almost all of the songs included, but I wanted to get a compilation that has all of these in one place. This is an unmixed compilation. There are nine songs on each disc. Almost all of them are full-length. Some are 4 to 5 minutes long. While others are 6 to 10 minutes. Also, there is a good set of liner notes with more info about the songs. In the UK, the label has reissued the 18 songs included in the collection on 12" vinyl. More are on the way.

Many of these songs might be familiar if you are into neo-disco, and house music. I'll mention some of my favorites. Loleatta Holloway's "Dreamin" is here in the Norman Harris/Carl Parulo Mix. Some of you might remember the Satoshi Tomiie remixes that came out of this track. This is quite similar to that one. Carol Williams' "Love Is You", is a perfect piece of classic disco. By the way, this song is the basis for Spiller's international smash "Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)". This song should have had more success. The highlight of this collection is Loleatta Holloway's "Love Sensation." This is one of the most successful tracks on the Salsoul label. Loleatta's voice is simply amazing! This song has been the basis of countless club hits. "Good Vibrations" by Marky Mark, "Ride On Time" by Black Box, and 'you Got Me Burning Up" by Cevin Fisher are just some of the songs that have used this monster vocal. Just for this song, the collection is worth it. Also, there is "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Inner Life. This is the same song that Diana Ross did too. This is one of the first versions of the song. This is also the best one.

All in all, this collection is worth every cent. Bring out the polyester clothes, the mirrorball, and those platform shoes! This collection brings the disco era into your home.

It's a must-have for everybody!

Second time around is a charm .......2007-01-04

OK! This volume isn't as tight as the first one but it's every bit as
enjoyable. There are grand moments on volume 2 that can stand among the best moments on Volume one. "Hit and Run" is the centerpeice of the set where Loaetta Halloway booming vocals tear through 11 minutes of a funky guitar driven groove. "Love for the sake of love" is a great slow burner (which is also the DNA for Montell Jordan's hit "Get it on Tonight"). "Nice and Nasty" is one of sleaziest dance songs ever recorded. Even if the lyrics are somewhat tame compared to what Rick James and Prince put out a few years later, the sexy melody and its even sexier beat is enough to get couples juiced up on the dance floor.

That being said there are some less than great moments on this disc. "Everyman" has a tight philly groove, but its bogged down by its overbearingly preachy lyrics on manhood. "A night to Remember" and "Janice" might be a bit too zippy for some (especially those who prefer a slower pace where the strings and basslines can really thrive in the songs). With 18 long tracks across 2 dics, those inferior tracks are easy to ignore.

Hey I can't give it all away. You gotta buy this album if you're a serious fan of dance.

Stretched Thin.......2004-12-08

Beware that the track listing is somewhat different from what is on these two discs. After listening to this set, I came away with the sense that with this and with the others in the "My Salsoul" series, the company is digging too deep into the vaults. There are, in my opinion, only enough tracks to fill one-- not two-- CDs. This is the case with the "Divas" set that features many tracks available elsewhere, and with the Walter Gibbons 3-disc set: too much included but not enough quality. Completists may rejoice, but the experience of listening to these discs is compromised by uneven material.

This series also highlights the way that the overactive Salsoul Orchestra players tended to cookie-cut the arrangements from one act to another. It took a strong and involved producer to keep the Orchestra from relying on stock string and horn charts. The liner notes don't inspire confidence-- there is rampant poor grammar and misinformation (example: much is made of Edwin Birdsong's "Button Buster" as a trailblazing electro track because the compiler dates it from 1979, when in fact the song was released in 1982, amidst the synth rage.)

Overall, I wouldn't be able to justify the price of these for US listeners. The meat of the material is too lean. Recommended not for someone who wants to put on the disc and listen all the way through. Better for collectors who are looking to complete their sets.

SALSOUL GOES BANNANAS!.......2007-02-18

Much like Essential Boogie Flavas, Latin funk flavas is yet another daring attempt to show a different side to Salsoul's massive catalog.
Once again, Suss'd Records come up aces with another strong set of garage raw and intricately composed dance music from the 70's.

This time around, Suss'd has traveled south of the border to uncover some latin and carribean styled grooves that's extremely rare and hard to find. Call me crazy if you will, but having these treasures in your collection is like Scarface havin' a fresh batch of Colombia smack striaght off the boat! These tracks will elevate your body and mind and have you OD'ed by the time the a CD stops!

Things don't kick off with much of a bang. "Samba" is a ok mid tempo instrumental that doesn't do much to raise the temperature. But the heat picks up considerably on "The Bottle"( the usual suspect on a lot of Salsoul compliamations),continues through "Rio De Janiero", and never lets up through the rest of this tropical journey. The album reaches its apex with "Samba Funk". This minimalist salsa smoker is nothing short of hypnotic - thanks to the interplay between the jazzy keyboards and the agressively stuttering backbeat. You also get to hear a couple of predisco tracks with "Aftershower Funk" and "Latin Strut" and hear how the deep basslines and heavy precussive sound of these babies predated the underground disco era by a couple of years.

Even though the album does get repetitive near the end with the three long jungle styled "Anikana-O", "El Caravanero", and "Kongas Fun", they are highly engaging tracks that'll keep the party going at any salsa party.

Overall, I would say that this is a notch more consistent than "Essential Boogie Flavas". The momentum never sags even when they slightly cool things down with "Baila Simon". If you don't believe me when I tell you this album is red hot, believe me when I say that this album is spicy and heavy enough to put a Cuban dish on a Jenny Craig weight loss program!

So cop this album, invite some hot Senioritas over, and get "laced" like a batch of Cuban Cigars.
