From the Artist
Dearest Audience, I want you I want you I want you. Prince Charming is back on his medication and feeling miserable about his lapse in correspondance with his loyal comrades. I want to tell you that I love you you. As "The Premiere Warlord of the Barbarian Hordes," Prince Charming suffers from a tremendous amount of work related stress; blackouts; out of body experiences, grand mal levitation. I do not sleep do not sleep do not sleep that I sleep I sleep I sleep. I want to tell you that I am asleep but I am not asleep. I wish you not harm I wish you no harm. I love your native country. Prince Charming would like you to interpret this CD/telepathic death threat as a cry for help. And he humbly requests your assistance in crushing the Earth people with love peace and unity. Please use your secret network of Earthling assasins to strike without warning. Warmest regards, Prince Charming

Product Description
At Prince Charming's Palace of the Senses, Paradise is varied according to the day of the week:

On Mondays, Paradise is Prince Charming's Palace of Sight, where the dancers are covered with flakes of silver, gold and platinum and the dust of emeralds, sapphire and other precious stones. In the evening, under the light of stars, and the reflected moon on the lake, Prince Charming is known to weep with Passion. Alas, Prince Charming is not allowed to touch his dancers in Monday's Heaven.

On Tuesdays, Paradise is Prince Charming's Palace of Sound. No light is permitted in the Palace, but the darkness is filled with soft sighing, and the sound of bows being drawn across the naked flesh of Maidens. In Tuesday's Heaven, Prince Charming is hung upside down by his feet from a long silken ribbon. He can feel the sound waves strike him and he swings back and forth almost imperceptibly in the darkness.

On Wednesdays, Paradise is Prince Charming's Palace of Scent. Prince Charming is not entirely certain what lies beyond those doors, for he is struck insensible the moment he crosses the threshold. All he can say for certain is that it is not very pleasant.

On Thursdays, Paradise is Prince Charming's Palace of Touch. Long feathers of the bird of Paradise cover the walls of this dimly lit palace, and the carpeting is deep and soft. Inside, maidens with all 28 qualities of flesh, from silken smooth to coarse as bark, wander about utterly nude. [...]

On Fridays, Heaven is Prince Charming's Palace of Taste. Here, Prince Charming breaks his six-day-long fast with some of the most rare and delightful delicacies known to man. Servants carry diamond decanters filled with molten lead, and bowls of rubies and gold ingots are beside every throw pillow. There are no tables in the Palace, all food being laid out upon the persons of his esteemed and lovely dancers. Again, due to unionization, he is not permitted to use his hands while eating, and can only eat such food as he can acquire by means of feet, mouth etc... The revelry lasts from sun-up till sundown Friday evening, at which point Prince Charming takes a powerful sleeping draught that he may not be forced to endure the common and vulgar weekend where leisure is shared with the rest of the populace.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Music.......2005-03-20

This Classics For Pleasure CD is a new release of older material from two previous albums. Unlike previous releases this contains nearly 80 minutes of music so it is excellent value.

Delius is often described as a British composer, which is slightly inaccurate. He had German parents, he lived in the United States, travelled to France and Germany as well as other parts of Europe before settling in France. He was in many ways an International Composer. His music may seem curiously eclectic. Think of Debussy with a bit of a Grieg melody and Wagnerian drama thrown in. Yet his music seems all the more distinctive because of it.

Vernon Handley's interpretation of these pieces have often been regarded as a bit too emotional, much like other British Conductors like Barbarolli and Beecham who recordings are yardsticks which others are measured. Yet Brigg Fair has an incredible lyricism and the rare Eventyr combines the Debussian impressionism with drama. The use of percussion and the shouting voices, presumably from the orchestra itself, in the hands of Handley come across so vividly. This piece alone with Handley's direction brought Delius to my attention. I now enjoy Delius' music more than I do say Elgar, Holst and Vaughan Williams.

This is a great introduction to Delius' music and can be recommended with enthusiasm.

3 out of 5 stars A Fun Album, and NOT Carl's Last Recordings.......2007-05-26

I'm a die-hard Beach Boys and Brian Wilson fanatic - and nothing after 1977 is close to 5 stars (unless you count Brian's solo work) - BUT as a lover of tropical music and Beach Boys sounds, I enjoyed their late 70's early 80's work, and the 1985 album, and Kokomo, and Still Cruisin, so when this hit stores I bought it and was immediately impressed with the sounds and harmonies. It's a fun record, OK? Some nice new songs like Lahaina Aloha, Island Fever, and Still Surfin. A great cover of Hot Fun In The Summertime. (but I never listen to the John Stamos thing at the end..) Do the recent albums by Chicago or America or Neil Diamond or Paul McCartney sound like or equal the ones from the 60's and 70's? No, but many are still great. Hey, it's Carl Wilson and Mike Love singing about summer!

NOTE: Carl Wilson made another album after this, a great one with Robert Lamm of Chicago and Gerry Beckley of America called BECKLEY LAMM WILSON - "Like A Brother". It was recently reissued with 3 bonus tracks (see Robert Lamm's website).

1 out of 5 stars This is Paradise?.......2007-03-12

To prove my point that this is one of the worst Beach Boys albums ever (along with the truly dreadful "M.I.U."), just look at these insipid lyrics:

Surfers recycle now dont you know
Like everyone from california down to kokomo
We're gonna keep on rockin
And raising world consciousness
We gotta fix this mess

The only mess they need to fix is this album. Sadly, it's the last one that included the incredible voice of Carl Wilson. Try not to remember this as his swan song, please.

3 out of 5 stars All that was missing was Brian - as usual.......2007-02-18

This is nowhere near as bad an album as some of it's reviews, although the Surfin' remake is just as bad as you've heard, if not worse.

There are several track here worth having if you're a BB fan looking for more stuff you havent heard. Strange Things Happen/Still Surfin'/Lahaina Aloha/Under the Boardwalk are all must haves, Summer in Paradise is good here but sounds MUCH MUCH better on the live version in circulation, and there are several mediocre tracks(Hot Fun in the Summertime, Island Fever) along with some typical Mike Love throwaway tracks("Sum-Sum" Summer of Love).

During the early stages of recording, Al Jardine was "suspended" from the band for a supposedly "severe attitude problem", returning only during the final weeks of production. Historically speaking, it was the only Beach Boys album of new material NOT to chart. A source close to the band once reported the album sold only 1,000 copies when first released(although the band reported it at 145,000 which was possibly the number of albums actually shipped to record stores). As a result of the poor sales, several tracks were remixed for a subsequent overseas release, with lesser results.

What really holds this album back more than anything is the electronic drum machine used on almost every track. This gives nearly every song an over-processed, 80's, demo-type sound and cheapens the proceedings, but not enough to make tha album unlistenable by any means. Comparatively speaking, in my opinion, Summer in Paradise is no worse than Brian's recent Gettin' In Over My Head solo effort.

You might notice while listening that nearly every song on the album has lifted a previous BB/Brian Wilson harmony. This goes right along with Love's lyric on Summer in Paradise "Surfer's recycle, now don't ya know, all the way from California, down to Ko-ko-mo."

But despite the issues described above, Summer in Paradise is a must-have for any real fan or those who just to hear some of Carl's last work. We all love the Beach Boys most for their vocals & harmonies and both are in EXCELLENT form here - even if some of the lyrics are stale.

For Carl fans, don't miss his later CD collabration with Beckley and Lamm titled Like A Brother - Carl's lead on the track I Wish For You is simply magnificent!!

5 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL BEACH BOYS. LAST TIME FOR CARL........2006-07-04

If you have read Paul Williams' book, "Outlaw Blues" then you can write a negative review (less than 4 stars). If not, don't bother. For those of us who truly appreciate the individual genius of each member of the BB's, this is the last chance we have to hear Carl before he died. Thanks Carl, we miss you. So listen with both ears and don't complain.

4 out of 5 stars Summer In Paradise.......2006-01-20

Mostly a good album, some things could have been skipped. It is the one Beach Boys album that features Full House cast member John Stamos as a soloist (he also appeared on Kokomo, plus some Jan & Dean albums as well). He first played drums for the group in 1972, after a hand injury prevented Dennis Wilson from playing drums on stage. This recording of Forever was used on a Full House episode. It features a 90's version of Surfing (a song dating back to the Morgan sessions in 1961), a family-friendly take of The Drifter's Under The Boardwalk, plus great classic rock hits such as Hot Fun In The Summertime, Remember Walking In The Sand, and One Summer Night. The rest is Mike Love/Terry Melcher penned tunes.

    5 out of 5 stars Rapturous !.......2003-01-15

I find these renditions by Sir John Barbirolli totally beguiling. He brings warmth and deep sincerity to everything he portrays here. One surely senses the great love he had for Delius' music. Much of the charm wrought by the conductor has to do with the turn of various phrases. Time and again he caresses melodies. Simultaneously, he conveys a feeling of simple joyousness. Hear the Intermezzo from Fennimore and Gerda; The Walk to the Paradise Garden; the Irmelin Prelude, with its pastoral beauty; La Calinda, where one feels serenaded in a happy, carefree manner. A Song Before Sunrise weaves a similar pattern. In addition, there's that wonderful exotic quality that here and there echoes in Delius' music. Brigg Fair seems to have both this at some moments and yet a pleasing, homespun British character during other moments. Sometimes too there is a nostalgic yearning. In this vein, one can only relax and drink in the expressive portrait of Late Swallows. And what about the playful, carefree In a Summer Garden or the imposing, spiritual folk picture, Appalachia ? In so many ways, both this sensitive composer and conductor reach out to touch the life-affirming soul. How can one not be soothed and refreshed by what is offered here ? If there's anything missing, perhaps it's the composer's Summer Evening, another of his memorable pieces. A wonderful collection, and a source of inspiration. By the way, I find Barbirolli's Delius more enjoyable than Beecham's.

For years, the only champion of the music of Frederic Delius (1862-1934) was Sir Thomas Beecham. His music was too moody--sometimes even flabby--for the British public. But his tone poems, which constitutes the bulk of his compositions, made way for Arnold Bax and countless others. Richard Hickox's take on these works is a moderate one, exercising restrain where Beecham let go ... or wallowed. Excellent here are the two Dance Rhapsodies and the killer "North Country Sketches," perhaps Delius's best-known work. If the Beecham recordings are hard to find, then the Chandos series is probably your best bet. --Paul Cook

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent performances of a singular composer........2004-05-04

Frederick Delius (1862-1934) is often called an "English impressionist," a term which implies that he can be lumped together with Debussy or Ravel. But just as Debussy isn't Ravel and Ravel isn't Debussy, Delius is an artist unlike any other.

He has never been a world-renowned figure, and his music doesn't have the power or universality of Beethoven or Mozart, but for those who love Delius, he is one of the sublime creators in the history of music. I, for one, love his music, and these exemplary performances of some of his best-known works present this singular creative mind at his very best.

Delius has some superficial similarities to Debussy and Ravel, but his highly personal harmonic thinking and his penchant for subtle but pronounced melodies make his music among the most accessible and rewarding of any in the classical repertory. The titles of his pieces, from "In a Summer Garden" to "On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring," demonstrate his preoccupation with beauty and the evocation of nature. His work is subdued, quietly passionate, and immediate in its rewards. In Delius, refinement rather than hysteria is the defining element.

This recording has been justifiably praised as one of the finest Delius discs available, and other than the great recordings of Thomas Beecham (Delius' first and best champion and interpreter), you can't do better than Andrew Davis and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Look into Delius, and I think you'll see why his music sparks such fanatical devotion in his admirers.

If you don't know Delius's music, this would be a great place to start. Several of the most popular miniatures are here (Walk to Paradise Garden, On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring, etc.), along with the lesser-known Violin Concerto. Tintner's approach is generally more leisurely than Beecham and Barbirolli (both of whom were great Delius interpreters). I would be inclined to say that Tintner doesn't mind a bit of "wallowing in impressionistic haze," but agree that we don't lose any clarity here, and to the extent Tintner "wallows," it sure is nice. The violin concerto does not come across in a forceful or aggressive manner, either, which, again, I rather like. And the sound is very good, certainly competitive with most other Delius discs I've heard.

If you like this, you might enjoy Beecham's early recordings of Delius (20's and 30's) on Naxos. Very fresh, and in surprisingly decent sound.
