Named for a cut that originally appeared on his Tumbleweed Connection album, Madman Across the Water yielded some of Elton John's earliest AOR staples. "Tiny Dancer," like the previous "Your Song," was introduced and carried by John's masterful piano composition. The song's sense of longing also employed the falsetto chorus that would become as much of a trademark as his costumes. "Levon," another entry into the John/Taupin "ballad of" category, is one of their finest pieces. The orchestration gives the song not only its sense of foreboding, but also its release of tension as the song ends. "Rotten Peaches" became a favorite, as did "Holiday Inn." There's also a different interpretation of the title track than appeared on Tumbleweed Connection. --Steve Gdula
Customer Reviews:
Keep listening over and over!.......2007-07-12
I have been dipping into the early Elton albums lately, and this one stops me cold and has me listening over and over. The Taupin lyrics on this album are masterpieces, and Elton delivers them with feeling and perfect melody. This album shows why this team has put out some of the best songs in popular music. True artists. Levon and Indian Sunsets are must haves for any Elton fan.
When Music Was Great.......2007-06-27
It is hard to imagine anyone who has not at least heard or Sir Elton John. He is the piano maestro who would bring Bernie Taupin's lyrics to life with the perfect musical arrangement. The 1970's saw Elton John become the outlandish arena rock, superstar. Unlike other stars, such as Madonna, Elton's outlandishness did not eclipse the music. While his big hits such as, "Good-bye Yellow Brick Road" and "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds", or "Bennie and the Jets" were huge, some of the earlier work showed the promise. "Madman Across the Water" is probably one of the most underrated albums of all time. In 1971 this effort should have been the freashest breath of air out there. Over the decades ballads have become anathema to stadium rock due to their often formulaic blandness. Let it be noted that before "Good-bye Yellow Brick Road", "Madman Across the Water" yielded two of the best ballads ever written, "Tiny Dancer" and "Levon". It was really years later when these songs became appreciated for their timeless brilliance. Both songs evoke a heartfelt emotion and beauty that few balladeers have been able to touch. While those two songs found a big audience on Elton John's greatest hits collection, put into context on the Madman album, they become something more. The title track is epic and sweeps one away with its lush orchestration and length. "Indian Sunset" is another such song and fairly well brings tears to your eyes. All of the songs are well crafted and orchestrated making them moving and powerful thirty-six years later. There were no sappy ballads on this album, just great, solid music. A real testament to a true artist. Any serious music aficionado needs to have this cd in their collection if they don't already have it on vinyl. Here, here, to a time when the music was truly great.
Dam good.......2007-05-13
This is a very under-rated album in the Elton John cannon. OK it probably isn't as good as Honky Chateau or Tumbleweed Connection, but I suspect that its more to do with the lack of a successful single than the quality of the songs on the album. With the exception of the very short "Goodbye" (1:48) only one other track (Razor face 4:40) is under 5 minutes in length. So unless they edited the songs there was no chance of a single from this album.
The album was recorded in 1971 and kicks of with "Tiny Dancer". Its a great opening track, but its beaten by track 2 "Levon". This has one of Eltons patented Piano introductions, a great lyric and arrangement and is one of Eltons greatest tracks never to be released as a single. Full credit should also be given to Paul Buckmasters great string arrangements on this track and many of the others well.
Careful reading of the credits to this album will reveal many well known musicians playing on this album. For example a number of tracks have Rick Wakeman playing Organ and Ray Cooper makes one of his earliest appearances on an Elton John album on "All the Nasties".
I've been playing this album for 30 years or more now and its well worth getting.
Music is life.......2007-03-27
I'm not an avid Elton John fan, I've just like the occasional hit on the radio.
This is an album I enjoyed and I'm not looking for more by EJ.
I don't have much use for organized religion but this album was beyond such nonsense. I gave this 5 stars because I think it was the best of EJ before he became the superstar: sound quality was excellent.
Elton John Madman Across the Water.......2007-01-05
THE BEST album Elton John ever put out. Indian Sunset is such a moving piece of music and Madman Across the water is great!

The Most Relaxing Classical Album In the World Eveer, Volume II.......2006-08-28
Good selection of music, poorly performed and badly arranged. Good album for a tag sale. Same comment applies for Volume I.
Great music listein to while you read in bed.......2005-08-21
I have listened to this CD for the last several years before going to sleep at night. I love classical music, and this is great music to help make my soul feel at peace and unwind after a taxing day.
A must buy for the non-snobbish classical music fan........2004-10-22
I bought Vol. 1 of this series and was quite satisfied, but I have to say I'm more than satisfied with this one. If you can just mellow out and enjoy some great pieces, you'll love this CD. #15 on Disc 2 is almost worth the price alone!
A bliss of spirit........2004-09-18
That's disc will open You a wonderful, beautiful world of sounds, their harmony & emotion : you'll feel your heart full of
Joy, Tears, Love.
Good LUCK!
Boring.......2004-05-11
Yes this CD will put you to sleep in minutes. Its the most boring uninspiring classical music. The first CD was very good but this Vol. 2 is like most movie sequels....AWFUL !

Customer Reviews:
Bad Company Find Their Own Sound.......2007-05-12
the previous Bad Company release 'fame and fortune' found the band confused and trying out a completely new style...it sounded great but the hard core fans responded by not buying it (which was unfair in my opinion)
but on 'Holy Water' the band found their own style
which they stuck to for this release and the following 3 releases as well
it is more modern sounding then the releases with Paul Rogers singing
and I think there are more 'hits' on these releases
Holy Water starts out very strong with the title cut which rocks hard
from there is another big hit 'Walk Through Fire' which is pure radio bliss...'Stranger Stranger' sounds a bit like old Bad Company with an updated sound...'If You Needed Somebody' is a beautiful ballad (which would also have worked for Def Leppard)
but my favorite track on the album is 'Fearless' which has a great beat and lyrics about a girl who is fearless and loves having fun...'Boys Cry Tough' is a beautiful song with story telling lyrics that really work,it's very emotional...the whole album is very solid and the format works
one listen to this album and you'll see why Bad Company was all over the radio when this album was released
the upside - pure radio bliss...awesome songs from start to finish...the best are 'Fearless' 'Boys Cry Tough' and 'Walk Through Fire'
the downside - really can't think of any
the bottom line - this was the start of the new era of Bad Company,a formula of great catchy songs done in a dark bluesy style,it worked great! Donutman says so!!!
the best of the Howe-era Bad Company albums.......2007-04-28
I think we can all agree that the old Bad Company albums with Paul Rodgers on vocals are rightly viewed as classics. I also think that if you take an honest look back at those albums, you'll see that those last few albums were not on the same level as Bad Company or Straight Shooter. The band needed a shot in the arm and got just that when they hired former Ted Nugent vocalist Brian Howe. Howe was the perfect choice for the arena rock decade, and his tenure in Bad Company is still criminally underrated.
I know this kind of AOR/arena rock is almost universally ridiculed now, but plenty of us who grew up in that era can still appreciate an album full of big guitar hooks, rock anthems, bic-flicking ballads, and an unapologetic use of keyboards. Bands like Damn Yankees, Bad English, Foreigner, and of course Bad Company embraced this sound, and rode an unexpected second wave of popularity as a result.
Bad Company's 1990 album Holy Water is (pardon the pun) the high water mark for the Howe-era lineup. This album starts with the powerful title track and then hits you with the song "Walk Through Fire", which is one of the era's absolute best rock songs (Lou Gramm's "Midnight Blue" is the other). It doesn't let up there, instead charging through rockers like "Stranger Stranger" and "Fearless" as well as the hit ballad "If You Needed Somebody". Someone already noted that the album loses a little steam in the second half, but even the average song on Holy Water is still better than many of their contemporaries' best efforts.
This is about as strong an AOR album as you could ever hope to find. The first half easily deserves a 5-star rating, and the second half is worthy of at least 4 stars. Holy Water may remain shunned by old school Bad Company fans, but it's one of the era's best rock albums, and one that all 80's/early 90's rock fans will definitely want to check out.
Bad Company- Holy Water CD.......2007-03-10
The holy water cd is my favorite newer Bad Company albums. But nothing beats the old songs.
Decent stuff, nothing fantastic.......2006-10-25
The late '80s/early '90s Bad Company fronted by Brian Howe is nothing compared to the old Paul Rodgers-fronted Bad Co. Nevertheless this is a pretty listenable album with a handful of good tunes.
"Holy Water" is a great early '90s arena rocker and the best tune on the album. It's got a cool guitar riff and a great singalong chorus. "If You Needed Somebody" is the big hit power ballad and another good tune.
There are a couple other good tunes like "Walk Through Fire" and "I Can't Live Without You" but that's about it. The songwriting is quite up to snuff and the production by Terry Thomas makes most of the songs sound similar. Drummer Simon Kirke contributes the acoustic "100 Miles" as a closer which is welcome because the spare production contrasts with the overproduction of the record.
Before I close, I must say that guitarist Mick Ralphs has a really awesome guitar tone on this record. Unfortunately he is often overwhelmed by the synths and drums.
HOLY WATER is definitely worth a listen if only for the title track. Not one I'd pick up new, but buying it used for a pretty cheap price is not a bad investment at all.
Holy Water Theme.......2005-10-10
I really love the song Holy Water, with its big-power-song rhythms and lyrics. Bad Company provides an entire album wrapped around that feeling.
If you've heard Holy Water and don't like it, then let's be honest, you probably won't like this CD. That's what the whole CD is about - blasting guitars, loud vocals about overcoming obstacles and getting to your goals. If you buy a new age CD about oceans, you get lots of soothing songs about the ocean. If you get Holy Water, you get lots of charge-you-up, you-can-do-it songs about relationships. That sounds fine by me!
Walk through Fire is of course about facing obstacles to get to someone. Stranger Stranger is about a hot, humid daydream. The other songs have their own variations, but mostly this is a long power-opus to the power of the individual who Knows What He Wants and is Willing to Go Get it.
There are plenty of other CDs out there for those seeking complex guitar solos and multiplex harmonies. Sometimes you just want a belting-it-out song that screams of leather jackets and smokey bars. This is the one!

Customer Reviews:
GORGEOUS!.......2007-06-13
I wish this CD had been around when I was planning my wedding as it would have been great for helping the bride to select music! Still, it's wonderful to listen to now.
Wonderful intro To MEHDl ..........2006-06-08
I've always enjoyed Great Wedding music and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this site I discovered a group by the name of MEHDl (pronounced medie). After an online search I found their site (S00THINGMUSIC,C0M) and listened to the samples...
I was instantly blown away by the quality of this music and so I gave it a try and now that I have listened to these CDs several times I really must say that although I'm still a Tomaso Albinoni fan of, I find MEHDl to be a great addition to this CD. I had them both in my multi-disc CD player during the wedding and love the way they compliment each other. I highly recommend that you give this artist a try or atleast just go listen to the samples, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did.
great.......2006-02-19
Highly recommended. Even has suggestions for pre-ceremony, processional, ceremony, and recessional inside. 2 different versions of Midsummer Night's Dream march included - one with trumpet and organ and one with a full orchestra. Lots of great selections, well recorded.
The Complete Wedding Album.......2005-08-05
This album has a lot of great wedding music. It had all of the songs I was looking for. There also is great background music for the ceremony. Glad I purchased it
Almost the compete wedding album.......2004-05-07
I used this cd to help me plan which songs I wanted to use for each part of the wedding. This cd helps you suggest the placement for the prelude, processional, ceremony and recessional. The cd mainly has classical songs, but it does have a few of "today's" songs. There could have been a few more songs they could have added. But overall, its a good cd.
Average customer rating:
- Mill. Classical review

- Some little gems there that I had forgotten!

Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

One of my top 10 favorites.......2007-06-20
Paul Rodgers went on to sing lead for Bad Company. I have purchased this music 4 times. First on vinyl, then cassette and twice on CD when it got broken. Worth every penny for such awesome rock 'n roll!
Free - The Classic Rock Defined.......2007-03-27
Today Free is best known for their huge classic rock anthem "All Right Now" which still gets played daily on classic rock radio. The song is indeed an all time AOR classic and is the closing track on the "Fire And Water" album. Free got fairly big in the years that they were together, but have been somewhat eclipsed by the subsequent success of Bad Company which morphed out of Free after the original band called it quits. Of course both Free and Bad Company were fronted by one of the great rock vocalists of all time Paul Rogers, and he is in fine form throughout this release. "Fire And Water" was the band's 3rd album and one where they really gelled together to form the backbone of what would become the patented AOR sound of the 70's. There are lots of good songs here including the title track, "Mr Big", "Oh I Wept", "Remember", "Heavy Load", and "Don't Say You Love Me". The music is blues based rock with Rogers soaring vocals up front and lots of tasty guitar from the underrated Paul Kossoff who would unfortunately pass away not long after the band's demise. Rogers and Kirke would go on to fame and fortune with Bad Company. Free is one of those classic rock bands that often go overlooked, but if you were ever a fan of the more popular Bad Company you might want to check out Free. This album in particular is one of their best.
Rock On.......2007-03-09
Back when rock was still cool, these guys broke it down to its basic components and spit it back at us. Oh so fine.
their finest hour .......2005-12-31
free the blues rock band fronted by paul rodgers who now fronts queen...whoever you think this is not the point of this review this review is about "fire and water" the classic masterpiece that has gone down in history for one song "all right now"
yeah it's a fantastic song but there is 7 other songs you know
etc..oh i wept, heavy load remember...paul rdgers had a great vocal delivery on this album and the rest of the band play to form a tight knit union CLASSIC CLASSIC CLASSIC
they were really big.......2005-10-19
Free is a very underestimated band. The group emerged from the british scene that was mixing blues and rock roots to create what later would be called "heavy metal".
The band was formed by the same Zeppelin manager, but their destiny were a little bit different.
they started very heavy, very bluesy, with "Tons os Sobs".
Here, on "Fire and Water", they're they are playing slow, smooth, passionated. We have Andy playing sweet piano parts, along with accurated bass lines, alng with tender and very rock Guitar from Kossoff and his "bandings" nodded even by Eric Clapton.
Paul Rodgers is in great shape, with simple and souring vocal for simple and souring lyrics he created.
Kirke was always a negative point. He should play not ina rock band, but in a military band playing marchs. That was the only thing he knew at the time, and alive was even worse.
All tunes are very nice, but i'll pick up some: "Fire and Water", "Oh I wept!", "Remember", "Mr. big" and "All right now".
Recently, a sad version of "All right Now" was helping GM to sell cars here in Brazil. Very sad to see rock n' roll selling products, but this is not the point here. Just listen to this record, not expecting a hard rock album, but a good and smooth rock n' roll from the early seventies.
This album is a peak they would never reach again.

Ultimate Wedding Album.......2007-06-01
The perfect album for anyone planning a wedding. Both traditional and contemporary wedding favorites. Sound quality is excellent.
The Best!.......2007-05-24
Send this to every future bride and groom - yes. But even better, send a copy to the PARENT(S) of the future bride and groom!!! It gets everyone in the mood and filled with excitement! Also, it allows them to hear some choices other than "Here Comes the Bride." This CD can also be a lasting pre-wedding shower gift.
A beautiful CD - wedding or not.......2007-01-11
Whether you're getting married, attending a wedding or just want some sweet music to listen to - this album is it. A terrific collection of some of the most beautiful music ever written.
The best of my Wedding CD's.......2007-01-10
I purchased quite a few Wedding CD's but for me, this Album has the most elegant and classic pieces. Ultra modern, trendy girls...don't you dare go here. Classic, beautiful, refined women...this is your CD.
Pamela
When they say Ultimate, they mean it!.......2006-03-14
This album really is great. As of writing the review I haven't gotten married yet, but I am definetly using it in my June wedding. It has all of the classics that we always associate with weddings and only weddings ("Bridal Chorus" for the bridal processional, "Wedding March" for a recessional, etc.) PLUS plenty of other music for the wedding party processional, unity candle lighting, prelude music, etc. I purchased another CD, but only because that music was used in EVERY ceremony at my high school and it has sentimental value to me. I didn't need to, as the album cover even sorts the tracks by Prelude, Processional, Ceremony, and Recessional.
The songs are so peaceful, well performed, and just plain pretty. Those with organ truly remind me of being in church as a child. I plan to keep the CD in my IPod and listen to it when I need some "chill out" time. Those which are not AS specific to weddings ("Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," "Air on the G String," etc.) sort of make you feel like you're in a classy coffee shop or in a bakery in an Italian villa.
Overall, a very well-rounded album. You could get by with this CD alone for all of your ceremony music and save hundreds of dollars on hiring an organist and soloist. With a decent sound system at your ceremony site, guests who didn't know any better would wonder where the orchestra is.

My favorite Crosby - Nash album.......2007-04-09
This is my favorite Crosby - Nash album. It came three years and several solo projects after their first release and was a big hit in 1975 (reaching number 6 on the Billboard album chart in the US and being certified GOLD). Many of the songs on this album was intended for an aborted CSNY reunion. It produced one minor hit single "Carry Me" but many other songs received airplay on FM stations that played album cuts including: Bittersweet, Take The Money And Run, Love Work Out, and the classic To The Last Whale. A very strong effort!
Crosby & Nash -- what a pairing.......2006-12-20
Originally released in September of 1975, "Wind on the Water" is the second proper album from the duo pairing of David Crosby and Graham Nash, and quite simply, it's a must-have.
You haven't truly lived if you haven't experienced the soaring beauty of Crosby's looping, aptly-titled "Bittersweet", and the dreamy contemplation of his "Homeward Through The Haze". Likewise, Nash's waltzing "Mama Lion" has striking lyrical imagery and an incredibly powerful buildup, with searingly emotional slide guitar from the extraordinary David Lindley. The album's ultimate 'forgotten gem', in that it doesn't appear on the "CSN" box set, and seems to have never been performed live by these guys (if it has, then just barely), is Nash's spellbindingly powerful and defiant anthem "Love Work Out"--Jackson Browne is credited for "other vocals" on it, and it features some of the richest vocal harmonies you could imagine, and the guitar interplay between Lindley and Danny Kortchmar is again extraordinary; CSN&Y should have seriously considered resurrecting this timeless inspirational gem for their 2006 Freedom of Speech tour, and hey, it'd have given Stills and Young a perfect vehicle for one of their guitar duels. Fittingly, Lindley brings out the fiddle, to excellent effect, for "Cowboy of Dreams", an excellent 3/4 country-western song that Nash claims to have written about Neil Young--heard today, the chorus sounds like a sly jab at those who are willing to go along with Young no matter what musical detour he chooses. "Naked In The Rain" is the first time Crosby and Nash shared a writing credit on a single song--it has a blissful, sun-kissed feel to it, with its blend of acoustic guitars, Craig Doerge's modulated electric piano, and Kortchmar's 'raining' electric guitar flourishes. Nash's protest number "Fieldworker" suffers from a somewhat lackluster execution, but it's still strong. Other great songs include Nash's angry "Take The Money And Run" and Crosby's dynamic, incredibly crafty "Low Down Payment". James Taylor is featured on at least two songs--Crosby's uplifting "Carry Me" (where he sings about a visit to his dying mother) and Nash's title song (a cautionary tale about the killing off of whales); it also sounds like Taylor playing acoustic guitar on "Bittersweet", although he is not credited (furthermore, no one at all is credited for playing acoustic guitar on it, although it's clearly audible, which just makes me all the more certain it's Taylor). Crosby's "Critical Mass", which serves as an intro to the title song, is magnificently arranged, bafflingly sophisticated, and beautiful--it's an a capella piece sung entirely by Crosby & Nash until the orchestra kicks in at the end; seemingly an outtake from Crosby's first solo album, it's kind of mind-blowing that Crosby's vocal parts had been recorded over 4 years before Nash got around to adding his.
As the liner notes for this 2000 reissue indicate, Crosby and Nash themselves hold this album in very high regard, and had incredibly good feelings about it as they were recording it. Indeed, with so much sumptuous, emotionally-wrenching material, "Wind on the Water" should be an indispensible part of any serious music lover's collection.
An album that never gets old.......2006-08-15
When I listened this album first time I was twenty and now at fourty seven I felt the urge to buy it once again on CD. Being a sensitive individual on environmental issues, my favourite song in this album has always been the "The Wind On the Water". Any concious person has a lot to learn from this great album.
Take Your Money And Run!!!!.......2006-01-02
I rarely give five stars on any of my reviews. Actually, most people who read them may not find then favorable. I am not looking to be the most popular reviewer on Amazon, but perhaps one of the most realistic. I bought this on vinyl when it first came out and was delighted to buy it on CD about a year ago. It makes me wonder how I did without it so long.... Their isn't a bad song on this CD...Hence, the five stars!!!! This is a well-produced CD. My favorite selections are Carry Me, Take The Money And Run, Homeward Through The Haze, and the title track. Take your money and run to buy this one if you are a fan of CSN&Y. You will probably find this is even better than a lot of what they all did together.
Time Has Been Good To This Music.......2005-10-03
I bought this LP the day it came out. I saw the tour and even took some very good pictures of this time in David and Graham's career. They played Moody Colliseum on the SMU campus in Dallas. Compared to some of their later work this album stood the test of time. With Russ Kunkell on drums, Leland Skylar on bass and all assorted guests these guys laid down some tremendous songs and soaring harmonies. To The Last Whale made me mad and sad at the same time. I mean killing whales for eyemake-up. If you have ever been on the water in a boat next to one of these gentle giants the song hits home. The guys in this backup band were the most sought after session men in L.A. for years. They were tight. Once again I lived this album. I put it on cassette the day I got it and I know every song by heart. I can't help it. I love these guys. These musicians both influenced my songwriting and my desire to seek music as a career. This album moved me very much.

The SACD 5.1 mix makes an excellent CD even better. Clarity, seperation and multi-channel defintion are all excellent. I noticed that some of the songs are extended versions of the original releases. Not having listened to this cd for many years in previous forms one other thing struck me. That being the only thing that keeps this from being a 5 star classic is the material on the 2nd side (at least what would be the 2nd side of the original LP) is noticeably weaker than side 1. Never hear anyone mention this, but if you think about it, its hard to argue that point. You could say its partly because of how incredible side 1 is and I would not dispute that point. Just makes me realize why back in the LP days I always found myself listening to side 1 more than side 2. None of this detracts from the overall excellence of this CD and even if it only contained side 1 it would still be a near classic. I'd say a solid 3 songs on this CD belong in the top 10 all time Elton John songs. That in itself is plenty good enough even if the lesser material seems a bit like filler in comparison.
SACD Version of One of Elton's Greatest Albums.......2006-11-14
This album was Elton John and Bernie Taupin's sixth album in three years. During that time Elton explored a variety of sounds, trying to find his sound. "Madman Across the Water" was the cusp of the quest that would be fully realized on Elton's next album, "Honky Chateau." While seeking his sound Elton managed to demonstrate an incredible potential that was broadly manifested on this album.
The first five songs particularly show a wonderful range of styles and compositions ranging from the solid pop of "Tiny Dancer" and "Levon" to the heavily orchestrated "Madman Across the Water" and "Indian Sunset." The lyrics were occasionally murky and often misquoted. Yet, there was a lot of power in the piano and the backing arrangements were incredible. The still maturing voice of Elton was new and different at the time, and appealed to a broad array of audiences trying to find stability after the psychedelic and turbulent 60s.
One interesting feature of some of Elton's early music is the periodic influence of gospel or soul music, most strongly seen on this album in "All the Nasties." The influence would not last much longer as Elton went down a musically more cohesive path from this point on.
Over time Elton played keyboards of various types, but on his recent album "Songs from the West Coast" he returned to the piano once again, recalling the relative innocence of this early music, though with the maturity of a talented, seasoned artist. I think it is a tribute to the power of this early music that Elton has returned to it once again in an album released decades after this album.
Music of this type has an incredible amount of power and appeals as much to emotion as it does to the ear. Listen again to an artist that made it big based on the power of his music and not the over-polished commercial pop that is hyped on many FM stations today. Truly a solid album for any collection.
Yet Another Classic Elton John Album Enhanced via SACD format.......2006-10-29
"Madman Across The Water" was Elton John's second 1971 album, following closely on the heels of "Tumbleweed Connection". Although stylistically, Elton wanders across a vast musical terrain that's larger than "Tumbleweed Connection", relying upon gospel, rhythm and blues as well as bluegrass, country and rock and roll, it is truly in his ballads "Tiny Dancer" and "Levon" that John offers two of his most compelling - and popular - songs in his early career. The album is also noteworthy for having guitarist Davey Johnstone joining the Elton John Band - in which both bassist Dee Murray and drummer Nigel Olsson are heard for the first time on an entire Elton John studio album - contributing his versatile range in bluegrass, country and folk music as the band's lead guitarist. Paul Buckmaster's orchestral arrangements have not sounded as elegant as they have here, and with the new SACD format, it seems rather obvious that his compelling arrangements relied upon only a small group of studio musicians, not an entire symphony orchestra.
My own personal favorites on "Madman Across the Water" include the enigmatic-sounding title song, which some of Elton's fans and critics have remarked that it represents the scandal-ridden American presidency of Richard Nixon, but I think that this is too obvious an interpretation; the "Madman" could be anyone, not the least of which, Richard Nixon himself. I am also quite fond of the two ballads from this album that have proven to be enduring classic Elton John songs. "Tiny Dancer", the album's first song, is a lovely romantic tribute to Bernie Taupin's first wife - "the seamstress for the band" - which many may recognize now after it became a part of the soundtrack for Cameron Crowe's film "Almost Famous". "Levon" is a more gospel/rhythm and blues-influenced ballad, with a set of exquisite, quite memorable, lyrics from Bernie Taupin. Both ballads are blessed with elaborate string orchestrations from Paul Buckminister, which serve only to back Elton and his bandmates, without overwhelming them sonically.
Long-time Elton John producing associate Greg Penny - who had co-produced the "Made in England" album with Elton - has done a marvellous job with the sound quality, via the 5.1 Mix SACD format. Relying upon the late Gus Dudgeon's digital remastering, Penny has clearly gone much further, yielding the best possible sound I have heard for this album, by separating out each of the instruments being played by Elton, the rest of his band, and the studio session string ensemble. Without question, "Madman Across The Water" is an essential Elton John album, which is now more desirable in its SACD format reincarnation.
Still my clear choice for the best of the early Elton John albums.......2005-12-17
When I was going through my 1000+ CDs to look for ideas for the Music unit of the Popular Culture class I teach, I have come to the conclusion that "Madman Across the Water" was a seminal album in my life. I seriously started listening to FM radio in the early Seventies because that was the only place to hear "Levon," which was my favorite song for about half a year (I believe it was replaced by "Knife's Edge" by Emerson, Lake & Palmer). Consequently, the shift in my musical appreciation from Top Forty to more sophisticated musical forms can be traced to this particular song Elton John song and this special album.
Of course, once I had enough loose change I bought the album and promptly proceeded to play the first side about five times as often as I flipped it over and played side two; having the CD means I tend to listen to the whole thing all the way through. I would argue that "Tiny Dancer," "Levon," "Razor Face," and "Madman Across the Water" equals the best side of any Elton John record. I also used the title track as part of a poetry unit for English class (ah, those liberal days of yore). The movie "Almost Famous" has made "Tiny Dancer" popular again, but anybody who listens to this CD is going to find out there are some other great songs too. In addition to John's music and Bernie Taupin's lyrics, I think credit has to be given to Paul Buckmaster, whose sweeping string arrangements never worked better in giving John's songs color and depth. "Madman Acros the Water" is Elton John's darkest album, although it is more a sense of brooding and forboding rather than anger.
"Madman Across the Water" made it to #8 on the Billboard album chart. Since most of the songs were five minutes or longer, this was really the last Elton John album before he started turning out a string of Top 40 hits. But the best albums on any Elton John album were almost always the songs you never heard on AM radio. Ironically, given its place in my musical history, "Levon" made its way onto the third volume of Elton John's greatest hits collection even though it only made it to #24 on the single charts in 1972 ("Tiny Dancer" made it to only #41). Just another example of the cherished memories of our youth turning out to be phantasms when seen in the harsh light of day (or commercial music industry interests).
Another superb SACD.......2005-10-04
Like all the other 70's era Elton John SACDs, Madman is a pure pleasure to listen to. Something no one has metioned so far is that RAZOR FACE has been extened an extra two minutes for a long jam by the band. It's very cool.

The Best English Blues Rock Album Ever *.......2006-04-12
* with the possible exception of Derek & the Dominoes
However if you mix both bands and shake well you get Lynyrd Skynyrd. That's right , the sustain Allen Collins practised so hard to obtain is all over this record. When the reissue came out(with bonus tracks),I took my regular copy and put it in my step-daughters car CD player and told her to enjoy. She's 24 and hasn't quit listening to it yet. That was three years ago!The blues-rock-soul wail of Paul Rodgers Transends Generations. This is quite frankly ,the best record Free ever made. And could very well be the very best record to come out of the English blues-rock scene(Derek & the Dominoes included too many americans to be considered British!).Dynamic from begining to end. The obvious songs are "All Right Now" & "Fire and Water". however , the others are every bit as strong. "Mr. Big" , "Heavy Load" and "Oh I Wept" are extraordinarily awesome. Paul Kossoff before the drugs ravaged his concentration. Andy Fraser at his thunder-loping best.Simon Kirke is the heartbeat every band needs (and Bad Company later enjoyed).Paul Rodgers is simply the best rock singer since , since , well probably since his inspiration , Otis Redding.
Hyperbole , perhaps. I couldn't begin to give an objective review of this record. Quite frankly it changed my life. It must be heard to be believed. What A Band!
Free at the peak of their powers.......2006-04-12
1970's Fire and Water was Free's third album, and the one which made them international stars. They were featured at the Isle of Wight Festival that year; the liner notes to this CD tell of how Pete Townshend approached the group on the ferry over to the Isle of Wight and congratulated them on the success of "All Right Now."
And they certainly deserved it--on Fire and Water, Free are hitting on all cylinders for sure. This was the best thing Paul Rodgers ever did, bar none; closest match might be Bad Company's eponymous 1974 debut. Paul Kossoff's guitar playing shows just why Eric Clapton wanted to learn how to get the kind of vibrato Kossoff was getting out of his Les Paul (which totally floored Kossoff--hadn't everyone been saying, just a few years previously, "Clapton is God"? Talk about affirmation!). Andy Fraser and Simon Kirke make up one of the most solid rhythm sections in the history of rock 'n' roll. And the songs? And how!
The title cut absolutely smokes--'nuff said. "All Right Now" was a hit, and deservedly so; 36 years later, this bluesy tale of picking up a girl and trying to hit on her still rocks. "Oh I Wept" has enough soul to have done Otis Redding proud. The bonus tracks are nice, if not terribly essential. The remastering is crystal clear and very warm. The only question I have is this: Why has Island's UK office been the only one to step up to the plate? A&M was the band's US label (not to mention the US label of several other Island artists, such as Fairport Convention), and apart from the Molten Gold 2 CD anthology from 1993, they haven't bothered. Thank all the gods of rock 'n' roll somebody did; kudos to Island.
The Greatest Album Ever!.......2006-01-22
I was absolutely shocked from the very first time I heard this album;this has never been done before and still to this very day nothing in the same greatness has come along.I mean this band is tight!Paul Rodgers is the best singer that ever lived, this man has so much soul that he excells in everything he does whether it is Free,Bad Company,The Firm,The Law or even Queen.
This album is the definitive Free Album and the best album ever recorded, with classics like "Fire and Water", "Mr. Big","All Right Now","Heavy Load" and many more.It defnitely has a touch of soul, hard rock and even blues to a certain extent!
All right... then and now.......2005-12-28
This is it... the album that countless bands still refer to as the inspiration and starting point for their own musical efforts. If you have never heard of Free before or maybe you've just heard the huge single lifted from it - All Right Now - then buy this with confidence. This is Free's watershed album - it marks the band's shift from its blues roots and tackles the dilemma of popular acceptance versus critical acclaim head on. The band is at its zenith - Kossoff's playing is agonisingly great, Fraser's bass playing superb; Kirke's drumming deceivingly effortless; Rodger's singing - just brilliant, as always. Even your grandma would like this album... there's something for everyone on it.
Yes all the tracks appear on other compilations - go for it if that's your thing, but if you want to own a bit of rock history, get this album...
My personal best Free album.......2004-07-06
Being a huge fan of the band, I would say Fire and Water is the strongest Free showcase. Rodger's voice just gets better and better, and Kossy's vibrato is at it's pinnacle. I like the mix of ballads and rockers, and naturally you have "All Right Now" as the outro. For me, it all starts to go downhill for Free after this disc. A must for anyone who appreciates 70's Rock.
