About the Artist
The Encyclopedia of Popular Music Copyright Muze UK Ltd., 1989 - 1998, states that this very popular US group was formed in 1952 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA Their line-up featured : Joseph Pope, Charles Pope, Robert Lee Smith, Horace Kay.
Although such an early origin suggests longevity, it was not until 1960 that the group emerged with a single on Swan. Now dubbed the Tams (derived by their wearing of Tam O'Shanter hats on stage), they added a further member, Floyd Ashton, prior to signing with Bill Lowery, an Atlanta song publisher and entrepreneur. Among those already on his books were Joe South and Ray Whitley, two musicians who would work closely with the group. Untie Me, a South composition, was recorded at Fame and leased to Philadelphia's Arlen Records.
The song became a Top 20 US R&B hit. In 1963, Lowery secured a new deal with ABC Paramount. The Tams' first single there, 'What Kind Of Fool (Do You Think I Am), reached the US Top 10 and established a series of Whitley-penned successes. His compositions included 'You Lied To Your Daddy' and 'Hey Girl Don't Bother Me', ideal material for Joe Pope's lead and the group's polished harmonies.
After 1964, the group preferred Atlanta's Master Sound audio, by which time Albert Cottle had replaced Ashton. South and Whitley continued their involvement, writing, playing on and producing various sessions. In 1968 they produced another hit with the bubbling 'Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy', which peaked on the Billboard R&B chart at 26 and reached the UK Top 40 in 1970. By the end of the 60s their mentors bad moved elsewhere while the Master Sound house band was breaking up.
The Tams moved to 1-2-3 and Capitol Records where a reissue of 'Hey Girl Don't Bother Me' became a surprise UK number 1 in 1971. Their association with the Shag, a dance craze and subsequent 80s film secured a further lifeline to this remarkable group, giving the group a UK Top 30 with 'There Ain't Nothing Like Shaggin'.
The Tams ever popular in the 90's, recorded 'Flesh and Bones' with Super Star Jimmy Buffett and joined him on the 'Beach House on the Moon Tour. The Tams began the new millennium by debuting their new album "Steppin' Out in the Light" with guest artist, G.C. Cameron of The Spinners featured on "Walkn' Dr. Bill".
(The IMA:) The Tams have recorded 13 albums and have been performing for over 37 years. The bands first hit "Untie Me" came about in 1962. They have had 1 Platinum & 2 Gold records. They were featured in 'Top of The Pops" and have traveled the world over.
They have been featured in such magazines as Gold Mine and have a very established history as pioneers in the music industry. They have also been inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, the Beach Music Hall of Fame, the Atlanta Hall of Fame and were voted Outstanding Black Musical Group and 80's Beach Band of the Decade.

They Came, They Saw, They Did More Than Just Hummin'.......2007-06-01
Xscape truly brought it to the masses with this album, and in the manner in which they spoke their minds in song, they proved to be a force to be reckoned with and they couldn't be denied. Songs like Just Kickin' It (personally, I prefer the remix over the original), Understanding, and I Got Love On My Mind are 3 major examples off this album that back up my thoughts. It's definitely worth having.
4.5 stars.......2007-04-11
When these talented girls released this short but sweet debut album, they were still very young. But they kept it mature, and that's one of the things I love about them. Nowadays, we can't get an artist or group under the age of 18 coming out without being a bubble gum pop act or a gimmick, talking about childish things like... lip gloss? Also, their harmonies are on point, which we really aren't finding in the industry right now. The production and song-writing is top notch. "Understanding" is so touching; I cried the first time I heard it. I love "Just Kickin' It," the original and the remix. Their take on the Clark Sister's "Is My Living In Vain?" was also a highlight for me. Okay... I liked the whole album! I listen to it straight through. A few more tracks and the exclusion of the interlude "W.S.S Deez Nuts" would've been nice, but I still love it!
Xscape enters the "girl group" market.......2007-01-03
In 1993, Xscape became the latest "girl group" to surge up the R&B charts. Like SWV, En Vogue, and TLC before them, they had a profilic producer in Jermaine Dupri, talented vocalists, and a hunger to succeed. These elements all led to Xscape marching to an incredible debut in Hummin' Comin' At Cha. But enough about history. Let's get into the music.
Xscape reeled off no more than THREE hit singles in 'Just Kickin It', Understanding, and 'Love On My Mind'. Each record was different from each other. 'Just Kickin' It' was a laid-back, midtempo groove that stayed on the charts for months. 'Understanding' was a smooth, sensual, slow-jam that ranks as their best EVER work. 'Love On My Mind' was the typical hip-hop flavor we'd come to expect from JD. Each helped in garnering platinum album sales for the southern quartet.
As with any quality record, good album tracks are present. And Hummin' Comin' At Cha is no different. The tracks to check out are: With You (a smoky, midtempo groove worthy of a single), Is My Living In Vain (an gospel-styled treat that will get your soul stirring), and Tonight (an acapella-laced treat that gets your heart shivering).
In sum, Xscape turned out an impressive debut. Not only did the quartet go on to bigger success, but they also became the front act of JD's label --So So Def -- later in the decade. They would also turn up better records as the decade went on. But, their debut should not go unnoticed. It is the start of their legacy and should be picked up by any music follower, especially those heavy into hip-hop/soul.
Grade: B+
"understanding" is absolutely heartbreaking..........2005-10-22
You know what, I've been looking for this CD for a long time when I was in the Philippines. Now that I'm in the US, I got a chance to purchase this in Amazon. BUY THIS CD! The tracks "Just Kickin It" and "Understanding" will already compensate for your money's worth. I had a heart time listening to "Understanding" though. Its one of my favorite songs of all time, but its absolutely heartbreaking and devastating. The group croons so well and their vocals just shoot me directly to my heart. I can't resist them. I get teary-eyed when I hear the song, especially when they declare the line: "I tried so very hard, to keep the love alive" and "I need some understanding, I wanna be with you..."
Don't take my word for it. Try to listen to the CD yourself. I believe you're a stone if your heart doesn't soften with the song "Understanding":-)
COMMIN AT CHA.......2005-10-08
NOT MY FAVORITE ALBUM FROM XSCAPE BUT IT DID SHOW THAT THESE LADIES COULD REALLY SING. THE HARMONIES AND STRENGTH OF EACH MEMBERS VOCALS MAKE THIS ALBUM GOOD. KANDI'S VOCALS ARE AMAZING ON THIS ALBUM AND UNIQUE . THE SISTERS VOCALS BLEND SO NICELY TOGETHER AND TINY PROVIDES THE COUNTRY IN THIS AMAZING GROUP.

An Overlooked Gem!.......2003-12-13
Big Bub's solo debut is one of the most underrated urban releases of 1992. At a time when the dominance of new jack swing started to escape the urban contemporary scene, Big Bub's incorporation of the outdated genre at its departure may have proven to be its biggest fallacy.
Even with all of its deficiencies, Big Bub carefully balances the outdated genre with a smooth set of romantic tunes, which many consider to be the saving grace of the album. The highlights include the seductive "Simon Sez", the soothing "Tellin' Me Stories", and the romantic "Work It Out". Other noteworthy tracks are the funky "I Don't Mind", and "24/7".
Commercially, the album bombed, mainly for an insignifcant lead single. Big Bub would correct this problem with his second time around and receive favorable reviews. However, this album is not needless filler. There is enough memorable tracks to merit a purchase. Therefore, this album is for new jack and smooth soul listeners.
Nice mellow.......1999-08-13
