These five discs are the first in a series of ten CDs that have what are considered to be the most famous and best known classical masterpieces of all times. It has most of those songs that everybody knows, and here and there a song that's familiar, but you didn't know who was the composer. It's a great collection to use to start your classical collection, because from these occasionally shortened clips you can move on to the "real deal" and discover lots of great music along the way.

My only issue with this was that there was an entire disc devoted to Mozart, and thus other less-known composers, who are just as good, got no mention at all. Everyone knows who Mozart is, but few know of Telemann, Spohr, etc. I feel that there should have been a few more pieces by less known composers in place of an entire disc of Mozarts music.

A great selection of classical music with good, pleasant sound. These discs are to be listened to and enjoyed; not analyzed and argued over. Just play one after the other for hours of famous pieces that take you chronologically from the Baroque through the Romantic period. It is an easy and economical way to listen to a fine general survey of great, timeless music. Plainly stated, a bargain.

while not the best and crispest recordings and best interpretations of the compositions, this is a good start to delving into classical music. it does require a learned taste to truly enjoy some of the more complex and diverse classical pieces and this is a good start.

I don't know if one could say that these are the "definitve" recordings of classical works, but they are certainly good, and are a great way for people to discover the titles and composers of some of the great familiar works, even if they are untutored, as I am. Two questions though: where are the next five volumes? I have the first 50 works here, but there must be 50 more somewhere? Also, did nobody but Mozart write great works from 1776-1785? One volume is nothing but Mozart.

    ... and there is no higher praise.
    Vladimir de Pachmann was lauded in the late 19th century for rescuing Chopin from Lisztian virtuosi and restoring him to the charm, intimacy and mystery of the salon (although De Pachmann managed to make his confessional tone carry in the largest halls).
    More recently, the salon aspects of Chopin have been disparaged and pianists like Rubinstein were praised for giving us more masculine, literal performances. But Rubinstein, who spent more time training in Berlin with Joachim and his circle than he ever did in Poland, always struck me as being more sympathetic to Brahms than he was to Chopin. Indeed, it took many years and a changing aesthetic for Rubinstein's Chopin to be hailed by the same audiences who considered Toscanini and Heifetz to reign supreme.
    Which brings us to Maryla Jonas. She was Polish through and through and somehow, like the Russian De Pachmann, channeled what I sense was Chopin's own capricious, witty, nostalgic and nocturnal poetry.
    It speaks well for Rubinstein that, though his compatriot's playing was so different from his own, he helped bring Jonas back to the piano after the broken woman was forced to flee to Brazil to escape the Nazis. Sadly, Maryla Jonas was too ill to build a major carreer and died at just 48.
    These 78's, lovingly restored by Roger Beardsley, are a precious link to the Chopin of his own time.

      Ward Marston has developed an amazing ability to bring old recordings back to life. The Gadski collections - there are two of them on his label - are amazing preservations of one of the great but neglected dramatic sopranos of the first 50 years of the 20th century. Listeners brought up on modern sound will have trouble with the surface noise; but learn to listen beyond it. Nobody sings like this today.

      Although this CD has its place as a historic recording of Johanna Gadski, the sound quality is so terrible it is practically impossible to even evaluate Gadski's voice. If you buy this CD, do it only to have a recording of hers in your collection. DO NOT buy this CD for the great repertoire on it. It is not something you will listen to for enjoyment when wanting to hear beautiful music.

      Here is the "Golden Age" dramatic soprano, captured at her best in excerpts from the German and Italian operas in which she excelled, with some truly exquisite recordings of songs thrown in for good measure. This long-neglected artist has finally achieved the recognition she has so long-since deserved.

        Was visiting a buddy in Providence last summer with my wife and we listened to this disc about 10 times one afternoon and NEVER got tired of it. I finally got off my ... and asked what it was and was told that it would be hard to find, so of course I started searching. Got this one, IV, and VI and will probably just work my way thru the series unless and until I come across one I don't like...which is doubtful. Cheers!

        I originally picked up this album because it contained music with Jerry Garcia but as I listened to the disc, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the tracks. If you are just getting into bluegrass, this is a great album for you.I will also say that I had it once and lost it and I am buying it again. Tons of variety! Enjoy.

          Complete recordings of Mikrokosmos are relatively common these days, but aside from guiding students I wonder what purpose they serve. This is a series of piano study pieces starting at the most basic level, and the music with genuine listening interest really begins only with Book 3 (of 6). Similarly the duets are mostly teaching pieces, and though they make for good listening in small groups, the entire series becomes tiresome. Bartók wrote magnificent music, and the later books of Mikrokosmos are filled with superb little pieces. But though the performances in this set are all excellent, not much of the music is basic Bartók. --Leslie Gerber

          I had intended this album to cover up background noise and create a restful environment. However, the selections and the interpretations are not suitable for that, they range from a whisper to a blast.
