5 out of 5 stars Wonderful..........2006-08-05

I really don't know how to review this... but this album invokes my mind to produce vivid images for 44 minutes straight. It really is a mesmerising and memorable experience. One of my all-time favourite albums.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting story..........2006-04-17

This album is the reason why I've held on to my cassette deck all these years. Why, you ask? Because, a long time ago, I recorded the several tracks from this album onto cassette from the FM radio. This music was of atmospheric slide guitars, eternal campfire sounds, train sidings, and Elvis on the radio. The DJ never said who it was and I subsequently never discovered who made this music. I figured I would never find out. Nonetheless, I loved the way this music made me feel. So, I held onto the cassette and my cassette deck so I could listen to this once a year or so. Last night, on a long drive, I got thinking about this music and figured I could Google "Elvis+electronic". Low and behold, the KLF popped up, and my long-time mystery came to an end. I have always loved where this album took my soul. It's ethereal and calming and brings me to a different time. I guess you can say my tape deck has no use anymore as a CD is now ordered and on the way, but that's fine. Them cassettes sucked anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Something different.......2005-12-04

Okay. Slow music often doesn't appeal to me. But as someone who sometimes finds himself on the open road at night, there is just something about this album that appeals to me. Perhaps it is the strange combination of Americana sound clips with a little Euro mystique, courtesy of the KLF. Perhaps it is that feeling of being simultaneously at peace and excited in a strange universe that the KLF seems to convey to me (much like being on the open road at night). Or maybe it is something different altogether. Needless to say, I just can't walk into a truck stop without thinking of this album. But as to whether you will like it, you will just have to give it a listen. It is not really much like their dance-oriented 'White Room' (another GREAT CD). So you really can't base your decision to buy it on this. You just have to hear for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars What a Trip.......2004-11-05

I agree with the great on drugs, but also when winding down from an all night clubbing session in nyc and then driving home on the dark highway its nice to put this on and just wind down and relax. a definately amazing album.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2004-11-04

Great with drugs, and quite nice to fall asleep to. Kinda cool to have in the background after you've come home from a club and are too wired up to sleep and don't want to listen to anymore club music. Or if you just need to ( in the words of a good friend of mine ) "Chill the *#@& OUT !"

5 out of 5 stars quickly up to the top of my fav's.......2006-04-14

I have over 50 CD's now, containing the Hotel Costes series, Cafe Del Mar, Private Lounge, and many many more. This CD has quickly become one of my top favorite CD's to listen to - at anytime during the day - it's incredible. I have this CD right next to, or even just one point higher than Serve Chilled 3, which is the absolute Pinnacle of Electronica.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD But Not Just Chill Tracks.......2006-01-30

Not that all the tracks aren't intriguing, interesting, fun, or even brilliant but note that some tracks are closer to bossa nova/trip hop than straight 'chill,' or just easy samba - nothing wrong with that but you will have to mix/shuffle the tracks a little.

5 out of 5 stars Music for Wine Lovers.......2003-08-01

This is a unique take on the downtempo, chillout genre. Kudos to the record label for thinking of this concept. Favorite songs - Bossa No. 5, Music to Watch Girls By (God help me, I remember the original version!).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent relaxing songs.......2003-05-14

I first heard this album at a friend's home. He was playing it during dinner. The songs blended perfectly with the overall mood of the evening. I've since bought mt own copy and can't get enough of "Vintage Chill". Last Tango in Paris by Gotan Oroject and Please Lord by Steve Austeen are both standout tracks. Can't wait for volume 2!

    Album Description

The Vintage Chill series comes full circle with the release of Volume 4 - Winter. Winter arrives signaling the end of the growing season and with it a time for celebration and reflection. Vintage Chill Winter covers both of these moods like a blanket of snow - the music is both relaxing and bubbly with the variety of rhythms and tempos that typify the Vintage Chill sound. This is the perfect year-end CD for quiet listening or as background while entertaining.

    Track Highlights:

Jody Watley, one of the true dance divas of the 80's, covers Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up" - a gutsy move which Jody pulls off with an enchanting soulful vocal interpretation and a really sexy jazz/house groove backing her up.

While Ella needs no introduction, her timeless classic is remixed by Germany's own De-Phazz. De-Phazz brilliantly deconstructs "Wait Till You See Him" into a smoky, downtempo soundscape that retains the sweetness of Ella's vocals.

Hailing from Holland, Adani & Wolf have long been musical compatriots of Praful, a multi-talented saxophonist who is currently making waves at Smooth Jazz radio with his debut album. On "Where Will I Be (Sem Seu Amor)" Praful croons deliciously in Portuguese while laying down his smooth sax stylings to perfection.

Micatone, one of Germany's up-and-coming Nu Jazz artists, first appeared on the Vintage Chill Autumn collection and here they serve up a low-key and emotional track featuring the lovely vocals of Lisa Bassenge.

One of the most asked-about artists from our Elemental Chill series, Max Melvin delivers the appropriately titled "Slowburn", a soaring, string-laden chillout epic backed by congas and understated percussion that takes you on a romantic, lush, cinematic flight. Beginning with a feeling of the coming of dawn, Slowburn builds to an emotional and moving sonic trailride - guaranteed to become a chillout classic.

This is a great CD to put in while you're driving on a 2 lane street with trees on either side of you, windows rolled down, cruising about 55 mph (not too much that the wind bothers you, and you can relax and enjoy the music) - just press play (skip track 3) and start the CD over again and forget where you destination is...great CD :)

4 out of 5 stars Love it -- but you have to like this kind of music..........2004-04-29

I really love this cd and I think the negative reviews are because it is very heavy on the ethereal, female vocals and maybe the reviewers aren't nuts about that. But if you like that kind of music, then this cd is great. I only gave it 4 stars because I don't necessarily think it's "the darker side of chill" as the liner notes suggest -- its still chill or lounge music, but very downtempo and more airy and light then "dark".

Some faves: "Whisper", "Magpie", "Missing", "Beautiful Crazy" and "Sunday (the day before my birthday). The cd is worth it just for these amazing songs.

3 out of 5 stars A Few Good Moments, but Lacking Variety........2003-12-08

It's a strange irony that this entry of the Hed Kandi "Winter Chill" series is billed as a trip through "the darker side of chill." A number of the artists that appear on this unmixed 2-disc compilation actually make up mainstream downtempo fare: Moby, Thievery Corporation, Underworld, etc. Despite that, this disc is a pleasing, if unchallenging, mix of warm grooves that doesn't break any new ground but overall serves as a nice companion for those frosty nights indoors. Solid tracks include the mellow "Another Try" by Nova June, the pretty "Missing" by Eric Kupper with Roy Camembert, and the bluesy "Beautiful Crazy" by Space Raiders. Other interesting cuts include Underworld's "Sola Sistim" as well as a not-half-bad cover of R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World as We Know it" by Julee Cruise. But I have to echo the sentiments of previous reviewers and say that "Winter Chill" slightly suffers due to a lack of variety. Too many female vocals and not much diversity in terms of tempo and flavor. It's a hair inferior to previous "Winter Chill" compilations, but it's still worth a casual listen.

5 out of 5 stars Upon further review.......2003-12-04

After amassing a couple of hundred chill compilations and associated genre type cd's from all over the globe, I've listed to almost every version of chill out songs out there, but this one keeps coming to front of my juke-box. I have to admit I do skip a song or two depending on my mood, but that's not often. Of all the preceding Winter Chill compilations, 6.2 is hands down the best. I highly recommend anyone trying out this Hed Kandi series to buy this one first. I like to crank the volume as loud as possible especially on disc two, but you decide for yourself. Just passing on the good word. This ranks second only to Paris Lounge Volume 1 as an all time favorite for me and my friends. Chill!

5 out of 5 stars Sensual and Beautiful.......2003-08-18

I have to disagree with the other reviews!!! I thought this to be a great selection of mellow music!!! It is great for a romantic evening!!! What is wrong with a lot of chic vocals? I found that to be refreshing!!!I am a huge fan for both Polaroid and Bonnie Bailey!!! Which are both featured on this CD. The John lee Hooker track was brillant!!! This CD takes you on a journey!!! It has a great lounge vibe, making it perfect for parties!!!! Paul Oakenfold also has a fantastic song on CD 2!!! I feel the other reviews are a bit harsh for such a great compilation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY BRILLIANT.......2004-11-26

I will recommend this album to anyone whos interested in downtempo/chillout house music. The songs are just so relaxing and the mixing is sublime. I have the 3 chillout house albums and they are all great. Get them all!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Kritike Tekhne.......2002-09-07

Typically I don't like House music because the beats are long and tedious and suffer from tired sameness. But this is "Chill House".

This CD was recommended to me by Bruno Lepretre after I wrote a review of his compilation, "Cafe Del Mar, Volumen Nueve". I loved this Volume Nine compilation which is Chill as opposed to the Chill House I am critiquing herein.

However, the production of this CD compilation is fine. One tune flows seamlessly into the other and though the beats are similar (particularly on CD one), the production and the recording is audiophile quality.

Originality is a hallmark as well. Listen to Track 3, "Blowin Drums" by Next Evidence a dissonant Jazz piece.

CD two (my favorite side), opens with, "Tranquility [Original Mix] Mettle Music", a Mark Antoine sounding tune/guitarist. Then you will note the deft transition into the next tune: This formula is repeated throughout the CDs. If you like House this CD may not be for you. If you love Chill/Trance this is again not for you. But if you like to broaden your tastes then this CD is for you. I give this CD five stars because it is original in concept and a great value--make sure you watch the interactive track to yearn to be at Cafe Del Mar, Ibiza.

4 out of 5 stars Soothing mellow house.......2001-11-13

smooth house music, wanna relax? then just put this disk on
i was amazed at the flawless transitions of first 1/2 hr of disk 1 .. very fluid
i like the track "got 2 b u", funky bass and guitar make this
a great choice for a summer night out
for those who likes built up climaxing sound, explosive hard trance house and breaks beware.. you won't find that
as the name of the album suggests, this is a chill house
however, if you have an ear for let's say, the flavor of jazzy house from mark farina, or naked music from miguel migs,
then you have another excellent house compilation.

    4 out of 5 stars Fun HOUSE!!.......2001-07-18

I got say that this record was a gift from one friend, (she just thought it was chillout or downtempo, that's why she is just a "friend"). Anyway i decided to give it a try, and it was surprisingly good, considering its a double cd full of house music. First of all its really well mixed, so it keeps you in the same mood all the way through the end. I think disc 1 its better, and includes some highlights like tracks 2,3,7 and 8, disc 2 own a coupple of great tracks: bebel gilberto mix, and track 2. This record its excellent for a party in wich you need something up tempo and groove sound, all in this house compilation.

Cashing in on the franchise? I'm not sure, perhaps. Is it horrible? No. Are there 10,000 other chill out CDs like this? Absolutely. It's just a very average collection of music. You work hard for your money and there's no need to waste it on ordinary music. Sometimes people, like myself, buy just because they liked the others so much and they don't want to miss out on something, even if it's just not quite at the level as the others... in this case, just don't bother! You'll be disappointed.

If you're new to the series, start with the excellent Vol. 1 and then maybe Vol. 2. Other good choices that are similar (and probably how you got here) is the Buddha Bar series, Nirvana Lounge series, anything by Claude Challe, Siddhartha series, or the excellent Barrio Latino series, all of which are head and shoulders over this release.

I've also written two list manias (click my reviewer name) of over 50 excellent CDs in this genre, some of which you won't of heard before and is hard to find, all of which I'd happily fork out $20 for and you'll most likely play time and time again. No need to drop your money on average music like this.

Freeze out in Paris Vol. 5,

I am not sure where things went wrong but Chill out is simply not the same compilation started by David Visan and Co. The music is just not as well mixed and appears to be rushed. The original ambiance is gone. To make matters worse, since Chill out in Paris, Vol. 4, the cover tells you "Over 100.00 volumes sold with previous volumes" I am not going to analyze the flea market billboard lingo, but I must say for a Buddha Bar like CD the big number of previously sold albums is unjustifiable. Lots of low quality music sells volumes. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this one. Buy Nirvana Lounge, Buddha Bar or Happiness (by Claude Challe).

4 out of 5 stars Great Chillout Comp... but PRICEY!!!.......2005-02-05

This was a great Chillout compilation at the time. Trademarked in 1999, I believe this could be the first of the series: "The Chillout Album", one of TelStar' releases into the market before it became saturated with MOS rip-offs. It isn't to be confused with "The Chillout Room" or "The Chillout Mix", either, as the "Mix" was released by Virgin, the other by... I don't remember.

How does it stack up? Pretty darn well! Mind you, the 'recent' tracks at the time were from 1998-1997, around then. But the wide aray of cuts come from many different time periods. One of those stand-out tracks being the title theme to Steve McQueen's "Bullitt", as done by soundtrack maestro Lalo Schifrin. I dig it - even though it's close to 40 years old! Then you have tracks from the nineties too, like a classic Nightmares on Wax cut, "Nights Interlude". Too bad though - "NOW" was grossly overplayed in the chillout era. The All Seeing I kicks in too with a nice remake of "Beat Goes On". I remember the intro to the remake on some commercial (forget what it was) in England back in 98' too. And this is just CD1. CD2 is actually the one I prefer. It's got a wide range of tracks! David Holme's "Rodney Yates" is a mellowed out cut with a nice undertone to it while Etienne De Crecy's popular (at least in the 90's) "Prix Choc" kicks it up next. But the gems, IMO, are Rae & Christian's soulful "Spellbound", which just has such a bounce to the R&B beat to it, how can you not bob your head? The elusive and underated Ballistic Brother's come in with an afrocentric 'made for vinyl' cut, "Blacker". It's preceeded by "The Jackal", a song that Nathan Haines "Squire for Hire" made me think of.

I like this double disc set, but would have to say to err on the side of caution in deciding on buying it because it's a bit dated, and IMO way overpriced. While I like the cuts, I don't think it warrants the price-tag it has here... and I got this one, yes, a good 5 or 6 years ago. Then not all of the songs got me either... "The Gift" was chopped in size, and of all Moloko songs, why "Fun for Me", which is IMO one of their worst? But still, there are several tracks here that I've enjoyed. If you dig this, and price isn't an issue, then be sure to check out the other 4 releases from the series that came out afterwards. But I'd recommend the Ultra series as a better priced alternative... although one difference between this and that one is that the Ultra series is mixed while this one is not.

5 out of 5 stars Even if you don't like techno................2002-07-20

you'll like this. Some songs you'll know - i.e., Praise you by Fat Boy Slim - and some you won't, but they'll all stick in your head, and before you know it, you'll find that it's fun, worthwhile music. Great background tunes to have on while at work - very peppy and soothing at once. Also great to have on in the car on a Friday night. Yes, the price is a bit much, but the songs and the way they're mixed are well worth it. It's a hard to find disc, which should tell you something right there. Now just go buy it.

      5 out of 5 stars a stellar compilation..........2000-07-19

Compilations are a mixed bag. You've got your "best of.." albums and then you've got you mixed-artist albums (generally with a theme attached). The worst are obviously those that are mostly filler if not all filler and the best, well, the best realize a variety of styles while not sacrificing its original concept....

This critique is for the whole Chillout series and it is worth purchasing.

Now to say that this album is "ambient" would be false for it not entirely ambient (however, it is indeed atmospheric). A better descriptive word, perhaps, would be "nightime"... this two-CD set consists of luscious, mellow grooves that are non-obtrusive (i.e. you can play it at party where it sets the mood rather than disrupts it) and moving (i.e. you'll catch yourself bobbing your head if you're not careful).

The mix is downright interesting. It is only here you'll find the Bullitt theme song and Bjork together.

      The whole series is great...

      5 out of 5 stars Worth It.......2000-07-10

This CD became an instant favorite with the variety of music it offers. I've enjoyed listening to as I drive, work and relax at home. Despite it's heavy price tag, each song is unique enough to make it all worthwile. ENJOY!

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2000-06-24

Truly and outstanding mix; such a wide selection of tracks that it itself cannot be classified.
