The first voice you hear on the new Snoop record is that of Master P, introducing the latest recruit to the No Limit army. It's a message, albeit a subtle one: in the team game of hip-hop, there's been a trade, and our man P gained the advantage. Da Game... is Snoop's first release on the label, and it is a No Limit release through and through--in spite of the fact that, in the context of No Limit's marketing megalopoly, Snoop's Merlot mixes poorly with the rest of the crew's Asti Spumanti. Fortunately, his flow has always been blessed with a Southern swing, and the Beats by the Pound gumbo funk is a natural for the Doggfather, even if there's little on the album that pushes the creative envelope. As for Snoop himself, he spends ample time attempting to evoke previous glories with the uninspired "Gin & Juice II" and "Still a G Thang," though his strongest moments come with Mia X on "Slow Down" and with Mystikal and C-Murder on "See Ya When I Get There," both classic No Limit material. --Jon Caramanica

Snoop Attempts to Resurrect Himself on No Limit With Mediocre Results.......2007-06-07

Unlike consistent early albums like 'Doggystyle', this No Limit release contains alot of filler and useless tracks. Some of No Limit's goons on here sound out of place with Snoop on here as well, but C-Murder, Mystikal and Silkk the Shocker do a commendable job here.

As for the songs, 'Slow Down' has a nice beat (though the lyrics leave much to be desired). 'Woof!' is fantastic, and includes Mystikal on it who adds his trademark crazy flow to it. 'Gin & Juice II' is not nearly as good as the classic we all know and love, but it's still a decent remake that is much better than track 10, 'Still a G Thang', which is a typical boring track on here. 'Tru Tank Dogs' and 'Game Of Life' have some interesting beats but only decent lyrics (it's No Limit though, so what do you expect...?). 'Dp Gangsta' is a very nice track, and the cheesy No Limit production is actually pretty nice there.

As for the rest... it's a mish-mash of the good, bad, and boring. I never cared about No Limit before and this is the only No Limit album in my collection (my friend left a Master P cd over my house once and I thought it was s**t), but this is an alright release. There's simply too much filler on it and the No Limit production sounds outdated (you can tell what year this is from). But when it's all said and done, 'Da Game Is To Be Sold, Not To Be Told' ends up being a decent listen.

Not His Worst.......2006-07-17

Snoop attempted to resurrect his career by joining No Limit after Deathrow crashed. This is his first No Limit release and it is not his worst album but nothing compared to the deathrow releases. I'm not going to judge this album on its comparison to his early albums but he could have done better for this. He still has his lazy, Laid back voice which you just can't dislike but this album needed the following
1. Guest appearances by the people he rapped with while on deathrow not these talentless, annoying no limit characters
2. Part of the reason some of his other albums became famous was because they were produced by Dr Dre. Dr Dre gives great beats etc and Snoop needs those.
However these tracks aren't all that bad and seeing i'm a big Snoop fan I can appreciate all his albums even though I rather Snoop Doggy Dogg. My favourite song would have to be the single "Still A G Thang" but some other good tracks are DP Gangsta, Game Of Life, Ain't Nuthin Personal, Snoop World, I Can't Take The Heat, Woof!, Gin & Juice II and Doggz Gonna Get Ya.

I like this album snoops wit no limit I wolud say 60% of this album is tight but there songs thats just off the chain thoe there was a movie to this album but I nevah seen it I would get it thoe tight songs are 1,3,4,10"dpg!",13,14,17,19,21 tha best! piece.

Misleaded.......2005-05-07

I should've listened to my instinct and moved on to another CD, but instead listened to my friend....This album did not do anything for me...Too bad it cost me $17 in 1998. I tried to trade it and they didn't want it....hmm.

I give it two stars, one for the effort with another label and another for the artwork.

A real gangsta rap. I like it a lot better than his new sh*t. Snoop got caried away alittle with the money , but is all good if is from the hood. MY favorite song is "GAME OF LIFE" and don't forget it , only listen to this album when yo smoke.

I DIG THIS ALBUM FOR WHAT IT WAS BACK IN '94.......2007-02-14

to me, this is one of those albums that you hear many different opinions about. one can just love it and think that it is a classic, and then one can just flat out hate this album. me? i dig it because it has that THING about it that i just cannot explain. i just didn't think craig's style suited what puff wanted to do with bad boy in the future if ya dig me. craig mack reminds me of that underground thing that you hear at about 12 am when you are half sleep. something about this style makes me think of ultramagnetic mcs..........actually, though this album is enjoyable, i would rather listen to something by untramagnetic right about now.

I dont own this anymore. I threw this away. This was a godawful album back then and it still is. Only one good track, Get Down. All the rest is a**, even by today's standards. Not recommended at all.

Ok...let me start off by sayin this was and
always will be on pf puffys best productions.
I think Criag Mack is still one of the best MC's
ever. For those of you who dont know Craig Mack got in
a fight with Puff bout' money and Mack felt Puffy was
premotin BIG (r.i.p.) and not him, when the first album was
complete. So when he went to make his second album he had like
one single and thats the only thing you heard bout the cd.
Mack said in late 2002 he said he dont wanna be one of those
rappers who is on where are they now tv show. So he wants to git
in the studio with Puff again. This cd...or both of them are hard to find because of lack interest. Now we gotta wait
to see if MAck comes back.

William "Bootsy" Collins cut his teeth playing bass with the James Brown band in 1970, but when he landed in George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic crew in the mid-'70s, he quickly became a figurehead of Clinton's messier, trippier cartoon funk. Throughout the 1976-82 period condensed into this two-disc set, Bootsy and his Rubber Band were essentially P-Funk for kids. His records had all the stage-crowding chaos of the Mothership, with the politics and priapism replaced by goofy spiels about the excellence of, well, Bootsy, plus squelchy, googly sounds and his infamous star-shaped shades. The tone he got out of his star-shaped bass, like huge bubbles surfacing from the bottom of a lake, was heavy enough that he could slow things way, way down--"Jam Fan (Hot)" crawls like no other hard-funk record. That, in turn, let him be the half-serious loveman Clinton couldn't risk being (check out the wacky, spacy slow jam "Munchies for Your Love"). Glory B mostly collects unedited album tracks, though it also throws in 1980's lost demi-hit "Freak to Freak" (credited to Sweat Band) and the '82 single "Body Slam!" --Douglas Wolk

Bootsy got more soul than that show and the proof is in this anthology. When I think of Bootsy, I always think of Jimi Hendrix as a mental patient! He takes the soulful singing of the guitar legend and exaggerate it to humorous affect.

When you look at Bootsy's customes, and listen to his voice, You may be destined to dismiss his music a novelty. But once you get pass all of the humorous vocals, you'll find out that he has the deep grooves and even deeper bass chops that made him a legend in the first place. His ability to improvise on the bass is unparalelled in the R&B. In fact he's only rivaled by Ron Carter in this style of bass playing. His bass style goes beyond just finding "the perfect groove". He finds the perfect groove and expand its possiblities (listen to "What's a Telephone Bill" to find out how deep he is). In other words, he doesn't keep his basslines locked into the same groove that sounds "exactly the same way" throughout the whole song.

What also makes this anthology great is that bootsy comes across convincingly as a goofy playboy. He's the first artist to my knowledge that doesn't take himself seriously in his loverman role. He has fun with it without making attempts to this pretentious, clean cut, smooth talkin ladies man.

I can't give away all the goodies, you gotta buy this anthology to believe because thie guy sure likes to play!

Man, this compilation brings back so many good memories
of the days when "DA' P-FUNK" revolution was a staple on
black radio all over the country and
Parliament / Funkadelic & Bootsy's Rubberband
was turnin' the house parties and the concert arenas out
with the spectacular "P-FUNK EARTH TOUR '76-'78 A.D.
(A Funk Opera!!)" which sold out almost as soon as it
was announced on the radio!
This was my era!...This was where I was coming from as
a 7th, 8th & 9th grader during this time.
Disco was okay on a per song / per artist basis..
but it was DA' FUNK that had my heart & mind hooked!
Everything on here is a jam...I only wish they could've put
a few of the other slow jams like "Physical Love",
"Love Vibes" and "As In (I Love You)" on here to show
Bootsy's mack-a-docious side, but they still did a good job
with the songs they chose.
If you love the funk, love strong grooves and music with
imagination, this is a comp to get!
**Also get the Parliament comp
"Tear The Roof Of The Sucker (1974-1980)" to round it out.
Sorry, but a complete Funkadelic comp has not been made
to my liking that truly encompasses the early
anti-establishment Funkadelic period (1969-73) with the
Mothership era stuff from (1974-1979) effectively!
So once they get it together on that one, then you
can really experience "FUNK BEYOND COMPARE!!"

Sexiest Bass Playa on the Planet!.......2006-08-29

Funk music is the original underground black pop music. Unlike soul, r and b, Motown and other pop genres, funk never really caught on popularly. Though disco borrowed from it and many new wavers paid lip service, the music itself remained stubbornly underground, even in it's most popular incarnations such as EW&F or the Average White Band. But the nasty groove, propelled by a solid bass and drums foundation with a layered stew of blues and jazz licks over top, is perhaps the most important sound in the music of the last 30 years, influencing artists as diverse as the Talking Heads, Dr. Dre, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman and even arguably jam bands like Phish. And of course there was no bass player as important in the music as Bootsy Collins, who was responsible even more than any drummer for the "bomb" that characterized funk.

As a member of P-Funk, Bootsy was a major player in the development of late 70s funk...psychedelic funk if you will, which mixed elements of James Brown, jazz and acid rock to create a potent music for dancing and social statement. But on his own, Bootsy was perhaps less interested in creating a black mythology and was more of a down home groove merchant. This anthology is filled with some of the Rubber Band's funkiest work from the mid 70s until about 1982. Bootsy's jams are potent and fun. Tracks like Stretchin' Out, Psychoticbumpschool, Freak to Freak or Countracula are as funky as anything that came out of the P-Funk Universe and will both get your booty moving and will have enough musical content to move your mind.

But Bootsy's real strength to me is his ballad work. His love songs are slow, sexy, and very very nasty. The Rubber Band was blessed with a few wonderful singers such as Mudbone Cooper, who's falsetto dripped sex and gospel at the same time. But what makes the tracks work is the slow hypnotic grooves set up by Bootsy and drummer Kash Waddy, which build slowly but inevitably to orgasmic conclusions. Stand out tracks include Vanish In Our Sleep, which is soooo smooth that it should be X rated, What's a Telephone Bill featuring amazing vocal work from Mudbone and other singers, Can't Stay Away, in which some great nasty funk work is hidden behind what could be mistaken for a top forty hit. But the masterpiece of the anthology is Munchies for your Love. The ten minute track is deeply hypnotic, based on a long two chord jam. As the track builds Bootsy launches a bass solo that quite literally explodes with passion, and by the end the bass and drums sound as if they are making love to each other. It's the most amazing recreation of the erotic experience I've ever heard musically outside of Wagner's Liebestod.

This is a very well done double compilation. The artwork captures the visual aesthetic of the P-Funk family very well, with shots of Bootsy and his wild glasses, and other cartoon shots of the band. The pressings are excellent and selection is also top knotch. However, this should be thought of as a way to sample the Rubber Band. Once you are hooked it's important to hear the albums AS albums. Funk music is album-oriented music. Often the albums are unified by themes and concepts which are really best experienced as a whole and not in bleeding chunks. Still...if you are new to Bootsy, or just want much of the best music on two convenient CDs this is a great way to go. This CD will rock a party, or a party of just two...just what the Funk is supposed to do!

GLORY BE!, THE FUNK'S IN ME! .......2005-08-29

I'm 24 years of age and even I can't resist the funkiness of bootsy's music. He did more than anybody to bring the bass to the forefront of popular music and this compliamation proves it. In an era of music that's dominated by commercial thugs, bootsy's music still cuts above the hip-flop music that dominates the airwaves. The first disc is a pure funkdafied thriller. There's no weak tracks and it's loaded with enough funk to make your speakers smell like silk satin sheets after making love( now that's funky in a good way!)

The second disc is equally as funky. Even though it doesn't reach the potency of the first disc, it comes pretty close with tracks like "Bodyslam","Shyne-O-Mite", "Mugpush", and a lot more.

All I gotta say is buy this complimation and let bootzilla take you on the ride to the mothership.

The 2nd best Bootsy Collins Collection.......2003-05-09

Glory Be Da Funk's On Me: The Bootsy Collins Anthology is the 2nd best anthology from Rhino Records. It's more better than Back In The Day: The Best Of Bootsy because you get a better story on his life. Today, I'll like to tell you about the package and the understanding of the anthology.

The Package
Well, first of all the package is better. It is all about unfolding and folding the digipak. When you unfold the first layer of the package, you'll see his band, Bootsy's Rubber Band in cartoon form. The best of all, when you unfold the other layer of the package you will see Bootsy happy and joyful, with his old little costume. The plastic disc holders are wonderful because you see another Bootsy photo. You also get a special and funny message but, I'm not going to tell you what it is.

The Understanding
You have to understand that this covers Bootsy's Warner years from 1976 to 1982. This doesn't feature highlights from his 1988 comeback album on Columbia Records. The sound masters are very great. The booklet is very informative and it's fully cocked with rare photos and liner notes. It also has a selected discography... I think Rhino Records is the best.

LIKE ''SNOOP WORLD'', ''WOOF!'', ''DP GANGSTA'', AND ''WHATCHA GON DO''. SNOOP IS A VERY VERY TALENTED RAPPER, BUT LET'S FACE THE FACTS, SNOOP JUST AIN'T CUT OUT TO BE WITH A LABEL LIKE NO LIMIT. This album is not Snoop Dogg he sounds like he has been in the recording studio smokin something. The songs are nothin like doggystyle or tha doggfather. Gin and Juice 2 and Still a G Thang are bad ideas probably be Master P to sell the album for people who will have a quick look at the back and the fact that it is a Snoop album will always sell copies but if it wasnt Snoop and it was a new comer it would be his last album. DONT BUY THIS YOUR WASTING YOUR MONEY INSTEAD BUY THE WAR DISC FROM ICE CUBE.

The considerable charms and originality of this still-running 1996 hit show, conceived by choreographer Savion Glover and director George C. Wolfe, were largely visual: Glover's engaging lead performance, Wolfe's inventive staging, Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer's exquisite lighting, and, above all, the highly successful use of tap-dancing, of all things, to create characters and tell a story. In this show, the music, by Daryl Waters, Zane Mark, and Ann Duquesnay (who also did the arrangements and won a Tony as Best Featured Actress in this musical) is perfectly fine, but it mostly serves the dancing, as well it should. None of this makes for a very compelling recording, however. Two drummers banging pans attached to the other's or their own bodies is kind of cute when you see it in the theatre, for example, but on a record it's just two people banging pans. A couple of the show's songs do manage to cut through the need for tap-dancing accompaniment, especially Duquesnay's interpretation of "The Lynching Blues." But otherwise this rappish CD is strictly a souvenir of the show or for tap-dancing practice. --Robert Windeler

One of those shows.......2006-11-09

That title probably gives the wrong impression. But there are a few different types of musicals. The ones that you have to see to understand, the ones you can just listen to and get the jist of it, and then those that some one has to explain it to you after you've seen and listened to it. This show is one that you have to see. I haven't seen the show, so this revue is based soley on my impression after listening to it, and I wasnt really entertained. A good bit of the music is tap dancing, and that just inst as thrilling as it would be if you were seeing it. So, know that a good bit of what you will be listening is tap dancing. The actual singing has some good moments. Its also has some extremly grating moments, which may have been for effect in the show, but not pleasent to listen to. I would definitly listen to samples of as many songs as you can before you decide to buy this one. Collectors should get it just because they collect, but others should probably not by this one blindly. If your getting a gift for someone who likes "musicals" this wouldnt be one to get. Fav song: "Lynching Blues"

This is a really great musical, especially for tap dancers. Savion is great as usual, a must have.

I recently saw the show as a stroke of luck. To be honest I probally wouldn't have gone out and bought the tickets for myself. I loved it. I recomed it highly for those who don't like "Broadway". It is non traditional. A great show to take kids to see as their first show. Audience participation is encouraged and a great time is had by all!

These jazz cd's rock...er...swing...are cool!.......2007-05-10

I bought all five of these at once so I could get "jazz literate" without spending a lot of money. They are a very cost effective introduction to jazz, and you get a lot of classics so eventually you can impress people by telling them about your favorite jazz tunes and artists. Just make sure to change the subject before you have to go into any detail.

Great recording quality considering the source material (old hissy tapes sometimes) and an almost-free price make this an unbeatable bargain with a jazzy beat!

Dabble in Jazz.......1999-09-21

This set was bought for me. I used to eat lunch at small sub shop on Belmont Ave. in Chicago. It was named the Jazzy Cafe. You went not just to eat and listen to whatever Jazz the owner was playing that day but to listen to whatever the owner wanted to tell you. He knew enough about Jazz to be dangerous. His subs would have a different taste depending on the music he was playing that day. He recommended this set to me one day and I never got around to getting it, so he bought for me.

To this day I am very greatful for this set and for the many subs I ate there.'

Put this set in and hit random and you'll get a real taste of the Jazzy Cafe as I remember it.

Say you're trying to be kool. Your perhaps thinking of inviting some people over to your house. You maybe have designs about impressing them with your worldly tastes. You may even know a lady you want to slice, but you're unsure as to how to get her off her guard. Get this set and all your dreams will come true. The song selection is A+, but some of the old tapes have some hiss that carried over onto the digital format. It is noticable, but primo if you have a mono state on your amp- you do have an amp...WHAT! You ain't got an amp and you wanna impress somebody with your stereo? Nevermind your in the wrong genre`- you must've got to this by mistake. Over the Rainbow, written by H.Carmichael and performed here by "Fatha" Hines on the ivory and Stephen Grapelli on the violin is worth the price of this set. Not to mention Theopolis Monk. Peace

This is an excellent laid-back hip-hop/soul piece, laced with great, varying instrumentation inspired by many of history's funky greats - like Cameo, Ron Isley, etc. Lyrically, it suits the pace very well, with the kind of "girl, let's go home and kick it" attitude. It's not New Jack Swing like Lo-Key?'s previous album, but it sounds like they found their music. A great album to chill to.

D Train 34.......2006-01-28

"Get Bizzy" got it right. I miss these guys and search for their name often for any new stuff. They were a classic soul group with roots from the old R&B days of The Gap Band, Roger Troutman & Zap, D Train, Lakeside, Fatback, SOS Band and many many more. By comparison, Lo-Key had their own sound, as did these old skool groups. They didn't attempt to copy all the groups of the 90's that tried to sound the same for the corp. money. These guys came in at a time when everybody tried to steal Charlie Wilson's sound because they had none of their own (Jodeci,..etc.). "Back 2 Da House" was so different from that copycat time in R&B that most listener's missed it. I was lucky enough to have enjoyed their 1st album and was ready when the second album came out. From start to finish, every song could've been a hit, if only the stations weren't sellouts. I would love to find anything involving these guys, especially DRE', the lead vocalist. This guy had the vocals that should still be ringing out today. My advise is to pick this up, if possible, it is a classic beyond anything produced in the last 15 years. Please Lo-Key "Come Back 2 Da House" once more and let's do it again.

"DON'T TRIP" ON THIS STELLAR 2ND EFFORT..........2005-10-15

As opposed to the other reviewer here, I like this album better than "Where Dey At?". As a matter of fact, Lo-Key?'s 2nd (and last) cd still stands amongst any CURRENT R & B cd as one of the best. Yes, their sound is derivative of Jam & Lewis' , but still very unique, and all their own. Produced by group member Lance Alexander (who also produced "Love Makes No Sense" for Alexander O'Neal), the cd gives an updated flavor on the Slow Jams (like the Zapp-flavored "Turn Around" and "Play With Me"), and brings a classic funk swagger to my favorite jam on the album, "Don't Trip On Me". This track is bangin', period. And, Lo-Key? brings their more mature, laid back "adult-contemporary" groove to tracks like "Back 2 Da Howse" and "26 Cents". And, the funk is also apparent on "Been A Long Time", where the vocals are solid as well. In summary, this talented group is cut along the lines of the Mint Conditions of the R & B world, where they produce their own music, and the musicianship is real, and thoroughly evident. To this day, after 11 years of their being gone from the music scene, I STILL check Amazon from time to time to see if they're coming back. If it doesn't happen, (which seems pretty apparent) R & B/Soul Music has lost one of her true gems.

Not as good as "Where Dey At?".......2004-04-07

On their classic debut album Where Dey At, Lo Key? had some awesome tracks including I Got A Thang 4 U and Milkshake whereas on this the follow up, they have lost a member and some brilliance. While this album is not terrible 26 cents and Good Old Fashioned Love are quite decent there are no masterpieces like on their debut album.
