Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2003-09-17

Since its inception in 1996 and subsequent association with G-stone records, !K7 records has garnered a reputation for turning out top-notch electronic artists regardless of their sub-genres. This compilation - the 150th release for !K7 - is a great introduction to the label, featuring artists from !K7's nine-year history.

Vocals are often the overlooked instrument of electronic music. !K7, though, retains a sense of what strong vocal delivery should sound like. Whether they come from contemporary vocalist Dani Siciliano's work with Herbert, or from legendary Motown crooner Bobby Womack's pairing with Rea & Christian, the vocals here are always top shelf.

In a pleasant surprise, some of the standout tracks on this set come from new projects. From the minimal ambience of Swayzak, to the four-on-the-floor drive of Ghost Cauldron, the future of !K7 looks as promising as its past.

Other gems include Mike Ladd's work with Terranova as well as his solo track. Ladd drops slow flow delivery that could set the tone for tomorrow's hip hop. The One-of-these-Kids-is-Not-Like-the-Others Award goes to Earl Zinger's cut "Song 2wo" , which could very well be titled, "Satan's Dancehall Reggae Jamboree"; it's that good. Shantel's "Inside" is the best track in the bunch and shouldn't be buried at the end of disc one.

Not to be forgotten, this set also includes a DVD with videos from 14 different !K7 artists. The videos are, for the most part, lo-budget and lo-fi and not as inspiring as the songs that go with them. The DVD is worth having, however, for the simple reason that you won't see these videos on MTV.
