Tic! Thank Goodness Someone Knew..........2007-06-21
I am ecstatic right at this moment. HBO has a new series "John From Cincinatti". In episode 2 of the show, there is a song playing as the guys are waxing their surfboards inside the surf tent. It is MESMERIZING! To my dismay, and apparently hundreds of other people, the song credits were not listed. The bulletin board was filled with people begging to know what the song was. I even e-mailed HBO to ask them to release the name of the song. Luckily, someone replied and said "The song playing in the surfer tent scene was TIC by Kava Kava." I immediately went to amazon, found the cd, and clicked on the song Tic with my fingers crossed. Low and behold, that was it! I'm giving the rating of a 5 even though I have no idea about the other songs, just because I am soooo in love with that one song and happy that I found it.
"Don't Stop the Music".......2007-01-11
Kava Kava are hard to describe, and the cover is a bit misleading. This is a four-piece band from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire who look like British hard rockers but produce an eclectic, energetic sound that falls somewhere between Massive Attack and Parliament. Each track on this flawlessly produced CD is refreshingly unexpected, pulling in sounds from trip hop, funky breaks, and plain old jamming blues and soul. The music has bite, and lead singer Pat Fulgoni's voice is just fantastic. What some others have said... NME Magazine calls them as "psychedelic funk" and Alt.Culture.Guide says their sound is "as indebted to Stax soul and the Philly sound as it is to the Manchester beat and Brian Eno." For me, the standout tracks include Maui, Don't Stop the Music, Tic, and Bankjob, but it's all strong material.
Relentless and funky.......2005-04-08
For such a cohesive piece of work this certainly contains enough variety to surprise or to alter the tone yet Maui runs seamlessly from one track to the next to form a marathon of rich versatile sounds. The album has touches of talent from many genres, and particularly excels at departing from mediocrity with an effusion of dynamic synthesisers, funky guitars & bass drums all providing the perfect complement to the leading vocalist and backing singers. The backdrop is most apparent in lulls as the tempo drops and entices the listener with an abundance of sound, serving to emphasise the build up and maintaining flow.
the bomb.......2004-11-23
i don't know who they are, or what the idea was naming it kava kava and have some cactus for a cover but this is one hot, funky experience.
'dont stop the music' freaked me like isleys 'who's that lady' with a voice so sweet and soul you just get up and listen to that. SO ...... DONT STOP THE MUSIC you ram jam fat boys!

True Hawaiian music.......2007-01-11
I loved listening to this CD on Aloha Joe radio online, so choosing to buy this was easy. Great sound, great voice, all around good Hawaiian CD!!!
not same-oh, same-oh hawaiian music.......2006-08-30
I've lived in Hawaii for twelve years and have accumulated a large, eclectic selection of "Hawaiian music". I tend to like slack key, and the old masters of, but frankly I hadn't heard anything new in Hawaiian music that I felt compelled to listen to, much less purchase, for many many, months. In fact, it was my opinion that the genre had stagnated. I realized I was only playing my "Hawaiian" CD's when we had visitors, as background music. How pathetic is that! I almost didn't buy this CD for that reason. I want to hear new music that has roots in old music. Yet the new music must still touch me and not be solely an ego journey for the artist(s). Maui, by Hapa, was all this and more, for me.
Each selection is quite different, yet they all flow and follow a thread. Each shows the influence of other forms of music, from jazz to that quaint Tahitian plunk-plunk accomanied by pure, joyful voices that is so nostalgic of Tahiti, a spiritual and cultural ancestor of Hawai'i. If you've ever been to the Society Isles during Heiva, or even flown into Papeete airport in the middle of the night and been a recipient of one of these heart-felt musical welcomes, you'll know just what I mean.
(I have to confess, I do like most of Hapa's previous albums quite alot. They are among my top five Hawaiian performers of all time. I also must confess this review is written rather spontaneously, under the influence of two glasses of wine. But isn't that when music is at its best? Not one, not three, but after two glasses of wine.)
Very Good New Hawaiian Music.......2005-12-31
I had always been luke warm to Hapa before, even their acclaimed debut album. one of their problems for me has always been the odd mix of styles and instrumental with vocal tunes. But this album is great. My favorite songs are Lei Manoa, Papa E, redemption Song, and Mo'i o' Lili 'u. Definitely a favorite album now. Even the instrumentals should not fail to make you happy. If you aren't sure about Hawaiian Music yet I also suggest you try Amy Gilliom (Pu'uhonua) and Iz (facing Future).
Aloha from Honolulu!
Truly Hawaiian .......2005-11-08
Having moved recently to Hawaii, I have the opportunity to listen to a LOT of local music. I heard Lei Manoa on the radio ONCE, after having been here for a few months and this song so instantly caught me...its absolutely haunting and it invades your very soul. I highly recommend. We often make CD's of great Hawaiian tunes to send to our friends who have plans to visit soon and this song is ALWAYS on the playlist. It's truly one of our very favorites and quickly becomes one of theirs as well. Bravo Hapa!
Native Easy Listening is still Easy Listening.......2005-10-28
While the version of "Redemption Song" is okay I don't see much here. Listen to a sample of the slam poet on track 11, "Kealoha Bebop" for an idea of how awful it can be; the (false) emotional tone of rap doesn't match the music in the slightest.

Whether it's ukulele music, the island exotica of Martin Denny, the lounge crooning of Don Ho, or the slack key acoustic guitar tradition, many styles of music have emerged from the jeweled necklace in the Pacific known as Hawaii. Over the course of five albums, popular singer Keali'i Reichel (pronounced kay-ah-LEE-ee rye-SHELL) touches on both commercial adult contemporary songcraft and traditional ukulele and hula dance accompaniment--he was a noted hula dance instructor and cultural historian before becoming a professional musician. The Grammy-nominated Ke' Alaokamaile is the singer's tribute to his family, singing about his ancestors and his own life so far. While there a gloss on many of these contemporary songs (even when sung Hawaiian) that no doubt gives them a broad pop appeal--Reichel also does a sentimental but somewhat empty version of Sting's "Fields Of Gold"--the traditional songs are strong enough to prove Reichel's versatility. Purists will likely have problems with some of Ke'alaokamaile, but Reichel's legions of fans will swallow it whole. --Tad Hendrickson
Customer Reviews:
What can I say?.......2005-08-30
Everyone else who reviewed this album has basically said it all. I have all five of Keali'i's CD's and can hardly wait for a sixth to come. You don't have to know the Hawaiian language to enjoy his music; even I only know a few phrases. His voice is beautiful and very soothing, especially if you're stressed, unhappy, or you can't get to sleep. My two favorite songs on this CD are "Ka Nohona Pili Kai" and "Mele 'Ohana," which is sung in both Hawaiian and English. I also love his rendition of Sting's "Fields of Gold." Keali'i is a great chanter as well. This is shown in "He Lei No Kamaile" and "Lei Hana I Ka Makani Ualau Awa." A recommended CD for all!
Felt Like Puppy Love.......2005-05-04
I'm so sorry to say but I really did NOT like this CD. The tunes were pretty similar and felt like puppy love songs. There were very few of the Hawaiian style songs that I like and look forward to from Keali'i Reichel but not enough to make me like the whole CD. I am donating mine to the library...
The Best Album I've Ever Heard.......2005-04-15
I own and enjoy all of Keali`i Reichel's albums but Ke`alaokamaile is the best. Everything about it is wonderful; from the booklet that comes with it to the final song. I always enjoy his chants and this CD has two excelent ones. My favorite song on this album is "Ka Nohana Pili Kai". All his songs are simply beautiful.
My family and I plan to fly from Arkansas to attend his September 11, 2005 concert at the Hollywood Bowl. I would only do that for an exceptional artist. I'm looking forward to his next album. This one will be hard to top.
A precious and wonderful album!.......2004-06-17
Mahalo e Keali`i for sharing your aloha with us. This album is a wonderful tribute to his tutu, and his family, as well as everyone's family. The music is pure, in true Keali`i fashion that his fans love. I had tears in my eyes the first time I listened to "Ka Nohona Pili Kai". The entire album is filled with great music, in English and Hawaiian.
Mahalo, Keali`i!.......2004-06-04
Wow. Another fine album from this fine artist. His voice caresses the Hawaiian language, already one of the most beautiful languages on earth. His Hawaiian sounds like the Hawaiian that the kupuna speak. Combine that with the masterful poetry of the amazing Puakea Nogelmeier, and you've got music that is timeless. Whenever I listen to Keali`i singing, it makes me soooo homesick for Hawai`i. If that weren't enough, Keali`i is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet -- and so is Puakea. They both still live in Hawai`i and they don't have the big head because they are famous. Buy this album, buy all of his albums. You won't be disappointed.

Album Description
Description by Nicky Trax (Phuture PR/Blues and Soul magazine)
Where Northern soul collides with electronica in a funked up stylee, there's even more amazing soundscapes on Kava Kava's hotly anticipated new album "Maui". With diverse fans such as Mary Anne Hobbs, Freddy Fresh, Capoeira Twins, Rob Da Bank (Sunday Best) through to Simon Mu (Back To Basics), Kava Kava are exploding as a kick ass band with more festival credentials under their belt than even Pete Tong!
The new album sampler contains the big dancefloor number, "Don't Stop The Music" and the Cienna Remix of "Maui", and Kava Kava are hotting floors up with their heady mix of French -styled funked up disco, electro sounds, raw live acoustic soulful ensemble playing and some greats beats.
Impossible to pin down musically...they combine souped-up baggy beats and 80's atmospherics with richly melodic grooves, led by Fulgoni's crisp and uplifting Northen Soul vocals.
Kicking off the album is the unashamed feelgood "Don't Stop The Music" already getting the San Fran thumbs up, and set to be remixed for even wider appeal.
"Space People" unleashes an upbeat breaks excursion with trumpets and strings, and another album highlight. Squelchy skanking Ram Jam Band sounds rocks "Terrrorists" as Pat Fulgoni's strong vocal presence runs through.
Then electro opens the irrepressible wah wah funk ridin' groove, "Sicfuck". The title track "Maui" unfolds in soft vocal n strings style as the breaks push this soundscape out into trippy terrain. And then KK turn it up on the rockin leftfielder beats n guitar thrash, "Bank Job". "Swans" is a soundtrack style interlude before KK then spin back in time with their chirpy, breaky first single, "Funked Up And Freaked Out".
"Beats For Cheats" adds a rave flava with Eastern sounds meshing with nasal beats and nagging keys that then breaks into funk...mad stuff.
"Tic" is a more acoustic eastern "Beatles" styled jaunt and then more leftfield musical arcadia can be found on "nfa" alongside the closing instrumental oddity "Faith".
It's funky with guitars, soulful and squelchy, and you can dance to Kava Kava's music which mixes it all up with live musicianship, electronica, samples and beats. A bit Polyphonic, nu Talking Hards. It's one of this year's more out there album sets and all the better for it.

Maui Wowee.......2004-04-10
I'm thinking Groove Armada meets Funkadelic meets Primal Scream behind an original male vocal with a big soul sound! I love this album!
It is quite unique but still consistent in its diversity........'Terrorists' starts off like a classic old school hip hop tune, wanders off into funk rock and psychedelic soul territories and frankly any song with a chorus line "soul and love" has to be applauded in this day and age. 'Dont Stop The Music' has some high energy disco beats and an Isley Brothers feel before it kicks in some blatant house textures. 'Bank Job' is a sledge hammer of a song with big strings, brass and a Tom Jones vibe in a Daft Punk setting! I can't get enough of this and can't wait to see them live! What is it? I don't care. Its music and its about time someone pushed the boat out.

Maui review.......2003-12-11
On the outside an up-tempo dancy feel good album - on the inside dark lyrics and very intelligent music. Kava Kava have produced an eclectic and interesting album that decends across the genres with the icing on the top in the form of Pat Fulgoni's slick vocals.A exceptional album!
Funky to the max - the future of dance?.......2003-10-18
I read somewhere that this album by Kava Kava could be the future of dance music. Yeah right!? I bought this CD (albeit cynically) and you know the reviewer may just have a point.
Frankly its a STORMER! Deep soulful beats and grooves, huge brass and string sections, chucka guitars and the MASSIVE vocal presence of wonder voice Fulgoni. Watch this space........
"Don't Stop The Music" is simply the freshest sounding live disco/funk/house track I've ever heard. Cut to title track "Maui" for mature chilled downtempo in a 4 Hero style (more what I expected from label Chocolate Fireguard after the superb Bluefoot Project Observations EP) Then the Kavas reveal they know how to rock out with the best of them on tunes like "Terrorists" and the superb "Funked Up and Freaked Out".
Its Northern Soul for an E generation, Psychedelia for the 4 on the floor Freaks. You heard it hear first people! Halleluya !!!

Visiting Maui-put this one in as you drive.......2004-01-19
This a a really wonderful compilation of several artists who live on Maui. Some of the music is original, some traditional. Slack-key guitar, ukulele, falsetto singing from the heart. Artists as young as elementary school age to mature voices. It has so much aloha it takes my breath away. The artists come from all parts of Maui and the music is an expression of deep love for the special places on the island. A must for anyone planning a trip to Maui or wanting that special souvenier to bring home. Also, for those who love Hawaiian music or want to turn friends onto it, this is a great start. Easy to listen to and great liner notes.
