4 out of 5 stars Some Pretty Good Takes.......2005-07-21

Has it really been 10 years? Kyoto Jazz Massive have been lighting up the nu-jazz/bossa and broken beat scene for quite some time and without a doubt, they are one of my favorite groups. Hailing from Japan (of course), they've had one heck of a ride in the past 10 years that has seen them line up with and performing with some of the very best musicians in the genre and the world. This release right here is "Tribute Tracks". It's an alternative take on some of Kyoto Jazz Massive's cuts from the past 10+ years and done by different artists.

Admittedly, I've had this one for a while but hadn't been convinced about it. After a few more listens it grew, however, and it's a very capable tribute to KJM. Highlights are the explosive intro on Mind Expansions, redone by Cosmic Village and Chara. It's different from the more electric twinged cut on their album. "Deep In Your Mind" was remade rather well by Yukihiro Fukutomi feat. Ernesto - it's given broken beats and a soulful vibe. "A Calmaria" is very different from the original I heard for the first time in 2000... with the whispy petic voice of Monday Michiru (*drool*) highlighting a quickly changing track. Other tracks that impressed be were the broken beat and old-school soul inspired "SPireedom 2004" by DJ Mitsu, the hgh energy Sleep-Walker reprise, and Japanese ambiance in "Behind the Shadow". I wasn't the biggest fan of the Jazztronik remake to "Shine" which is surprising because I'm a huge Jazztronik fan. "The Brightness of These Days" was good but made me yearn to hear the original again.

There's two stumbling blocks with this; 1: the enormous import price of $50! and 2: The linear notes are for the most part in kanji. In fact, that's the case with the other two cd's in this KJM series, except for "By KJM", which was I believe the last of the three to be released. That one is a bit cheaper. But other than that, for the KJM collector and those that are high admirers of their works, you may want to check this out (but shop around - you can probably find it for far less than $50!). If you do like this, by all means check out KJM's feature album on Compost Records "Spirit of the Sun" along with their Crossbreed series and the numerous EP's and remixes that they have out. In fact, just check out the white covered "For KJM" which has cuts dedicated to them and the black covered "By KJM", which I really enjoyed, which has 11 of KJM's remixes. Also, KJM fans that are interested in some other great Japanese artists, check out work by Jazztronik, Sleep Walker, Soul Bossa Trio, Lava and Hajime Yoshizawa.
