A dream realized, “Changin'” is nothing short of a labor of love for West End Records' proud papa, Mel Cheren. The original version, a "sleaze" classic by Sharon Ridley (Tabu Records,1976) has been a personal favorite of his since it was released. After he introduced the song to DJ Larry Levan (who remembered dancing to it at The Flamingo), it became one of Larry's favorite closing theme songs at the Paradise Garage-a song he'd often play especially for Mel; as would other DJs around town when they wanted to "tip their hats" to him if he was in the club.

The idea to have Linda Clifford cover "Changin'" originally struck Mel a couple years ago when he was thinking about re-opening West End Records. Delayed by the business of getting West End back in the game, it was over a year before he sent Linda a tape of the Sharon Ridley version. She loved it, played it for Ralphi Rosario (with whom she'd been working on a regular basis) and he loved it too. Mel suggested the two go ahead and record it together. They did, with Linda penning a few additional saucy lyrics, and here it is! (That's her Fierceness above, looking very pleased about the whole thing.)

Ralphi's versions were released and DJ/remixers who loved the record came a-knockin' asking permission to present their take on “Changin'.” Although the remixes have been released on two separate vinyl packages (Tom Moulton/Blaze/ Southern Divide and Pound Boys/Julian Marsh), all vocal mixes are here on the maxi-CD

RIP, BEVERLY SILLS 1929-2007.......2007-07-03

The great American diva's passing was announced today.

This wonderful CD set is a perfect compilation of her art as can be found anywhere. Her finest roles and performances are captured here, most of them derived from the Westminster/Audio Treasury recordings from her prime. Listening to them again demonstrates to me why she was so special, and such an inspiration to music lovers everywhere.

Brava Sills!.......2007-02-02

A very nice compilation of Sillsiana. The different cuts on this CD provide a nice illustration of her work. Let me briefly describe my response to a sampling of the works on this CD:

Bellini, I Puritani, "Son vergin vezzosa." Wonderful. Sutherland owns this--but so does Beverly Sills. Contemporary sopranos such as Netrebko and Gruberova have also sung this on their respective CDs, and while their product is nice, it simply does not compare. Sills is remarkably agile with her voice; the trills are well done; she cleanly hits high notes; the overall effect can only be described as wonderful.

Bellini, Norma, "Mira, o Norma". This is smoothly sung and very melodic. The technique that she exhibits does not overwhelm the music.

Rosini, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, "Contro un cor che accende amore." Again, her agile voice is well deployed. The florid singing is well done.

Donizetti, Roberto Devereaux, "Che m'apporti." Her clean, light voice matches well with this aria. Smoothly sung. Her "Quel sangue versato al cielo s'innalza," which follows, is well done. High notes cleanly hit, a smooth line.

Verdi, La Traviata, "E strano. . . .Sempre libera." Again, what agility! In "Sempre libera," she reveals a rich voice and, again, wonderful agility. This is an animated version of one of Verdi's showcase pieces.

Lehar, Giudetta. "Meine Lippen." A lot of fun! This is smoothly sung.

In the final analysis, this is a nice potpourri of Beverly Sills' repertoire. Those not familiar with her work will find this a nice entree to her oeuvre; those familiar with her will find this a good compilation.

This recording is another in an all too small CD collection of Sills recordings. I eagerly await more.

The Great American Soprano.......2005-10-01

This is a great collecition featuring arias from the Classical and Romantic periods. Fabulous!!!!!

My Favorite Woman.......2005-08-05

I would have to say that when I first heard Beverly Sills sing, I was entranced. I couldn't take my eyes off of her and I became angry at any rustling around me, because I was afraid I would miss one note. It was so addictive....that is what she is....addictive! A c.d. will never properly capture her style. She is an amazing leader in opera, taking it into a new frontier and I believe this c.d. showcases that.

Sing it Smokie!!!!!.......2007-06-13

Off the bat, this brother can sing, he is in full control of his vocals, sometimes smooth and sometime soaring, but he can deliver nonetheless, the awesome standout track "Ummm Good" is a fine praise & worship experience, that will leave you wanting to praise more. The cd opener is the upbeat "Celebrate" another great praise song. Great & Mighty a mid-tempo cut has an slight island feel to it with a bop your head ,tap your feet vibe. Smokie shines on 2 other tracks "In time" & More than anything, nice background arrangements as well. Another gem, the Whitney Houston remake "Run to you" is mesmerizing and definitely a far better renditon by Smokie, not only is it from a male point of view, but it's about the Lord, it doesn't get any better than that! The only low points on this cd is that there are mostly slow tempo songs, but if that's whatcha like, this is the cd for you...I enjoyed it as well.

Placid and Ever So Smooth.......2007-04-08

My introduction to Tord Gustavsen came via The Ground which was highly recommended in a respected national magazine known for its elevated tone and sophisticated taste. I liked that CD well enough, but I like Changing Places even more. It is indeed mellow, placid, and ever so smooth and it may even be sleep-inducing as one reviewer suggested, but it is pure bliss from the first note to the last.
What makes Changing Places so good is not just the relaxing vibe, but the way it flows so evenly, each tune blending seamlessly into the one that follows. I have no favorites here, I like the whole CD. Its just the perfect background music for relaxing on your porch with a favorite beverage or for calming your nerves while doing paperwork at the office.
Changing Places has me eagerly looking forward to the next Tord Gustavsen Trio CD. If you like laid-back pianocentric jazz, then you should enjoy this as well.

The best kind of candlelight jazz.......2006-11-09

Changing Places reminds me more than anything of an ice sculpture: it's a thing of crystalline beauty, light and delicate, almost ephemeral. But there's a gorgeous range of colors, and it always seems to be shifting and changing with the light.

This is piano-trio jazz made for snowy/rainy days, quiet moments and the small hours of the night. Even "IGN" with its up-tempo bluesy feeling doesn't break the fragile beauty of the overall mood. Gustavsen has an exquisite touch on the keys, but more importantly, his musical sensibility covers not just jazz but folk, blues, Latin rhythms and whatever else he comes across. It's all blended into something contemplative and reflective. The notes fall as gently as snowflakes. Rarely does such instrumental sophistication come across as so smooth & easy to listen to. Just as importantly, TG's trio are telepathically attuned to each other. They work together, they interact and respond to each other with an effortless grace, and they recognize the value of silence just as much as the value of the notes.

It seems impossible that any label can keep making so many albums (let alone so many with this same instrumentation) and keep making so many more beautiful than the last. But somehow ECM still does it. This is no exception. Best enjoyed by candlelight, although any quiet time will do well.

An absolute heartbreaker.......2006-03-31

This album is an absolute musthave.. even if you never listen to jazz music, this album is so strong you'll like it anyway. It really takes you away, tord's way of playing sounds smooth and honoust. Tord Gustavson absolutely comes in the top 3 modern 'white' pianists, with Brad Mehldau and Joey Calderazzo.

Piano trio beauty at an unexpected level.......2006-01-14

"Changing Places" is a piano trio beauty and already my favorite late-night jazz recording. In depth mutual understanding of the art of the modern lyrical piano trio, makes this recording a must to have for everyone who loves the melody. My first encounter with this great trio was with the excellent Norwegian vocalist Silje Neergaard (3 excellent cd's on the Universal label). Having been to multiple Tord Gustavsen Trio concerts in Norway, drummer Jarle Vespestad shows a seldom growing quality as a drummer with outstanding brushwork and syncopated "loose" drumming. Gustavsen has becoming a somewhat piano superstar in the international jazz community and even frequent on pop charts, and his to ECM CD's tells you why. Third CD named "Live At The Village Vanguard"??

a sleeper.......2005-10-12

If your thing is slow (and i mean SLOW) pieces which unfold very...slowly, then this is for you. Add a little New Age 'aroma' and you are in for one of your best musical experiences...only problem is you'll probably be snoring. I find this to be a kind of a keith jarrett trio styled group which has consummed large amounts of downers. Sure there is subtlety...maybe a bit too much. It did put me to sleep fast , though.

Speaker 1: "I quite like the way Philip Glass has taken the very context of pop music and married it with the grandiose elements of classical music and made something entirely new with the two. I think it's a very clear and clever arrangement which forces us to think of the boundaries in music and how it transcends the triviality of such genres."

Speaker 2: "I'm sorry but I just find that preposterous. Obviously that's his main aim is to find the perfect counterpoint between classical and pop music and it's an intelligent idea but ultimately pointless....."

S1: "Come now, it's a work of genius."

S2: "I think not.....and genius is not something I'd use lightly as you have on many occasions. I get the impression you are easily amused. Take Philip Glass' compositions on merit and they are very good....granted his use of minimalism can grate on the listener but essentially there is something in them that makes them unique. With this he has merely washed out his sound and dumbed down the arrangements so that they carefully accompany the singers with which he has in mind. And for me that's just not acceptable. Similarly David Byrne is a great singer who uses his songs powerfully and with a great deal of thought seems blocked out somewhat. It seems as if both are compromised and as musicians that seems a total failure."

S1: "But you always look on the whole idea of musicians compromised and the arrangements as something of vital importance. Can't you take it for what it is and that is that it gives a good ambience of some sort. And there are plenty more singers in this then just David Byrne."

S2: "I know that but even they feel stymied by this idea. They want to do something more but they are afraid and subsequently bottle it when they could really have gone out and done something. That goes for everyone there....they all feel compromised as if they don't know what they should really do. And that's terrible. As for the music itself it merely sounds as background for a meal in a restaurant for well off suburbanites such as ourselves and it's an all too knowing ploy that's used to fritter away in the background."

it's addictive..........2005-12-21

Somehow, I've hung onto this CD for over fifteen years. I'll forget I even own it, find it, then repeatedly play it for a couple hours at a time.

If you don't like Glass's musical compositions, you'll definitely hate "Songs from the Liquid Days." If you appreciate Glass, then this creation is definitely worth your time and money.

You have lyrics by Laurie Anderson, David Byrne, Paul Simon, and Suzanne Vega. The words and music are a perfect match. You have the vocal stylings of Bernard Fowler, the Roches, Linda Ronstadt, and Douglas Perry. A couple of those names I'm not familiar with except for this CD. Regardless, the talent and power is inescapable.

I'm by no means a religious person, but listening to this creation is as close to a religious experience I imagine I'll ever have.

It's haunting. It's moving.

Cheesy Brilliance...or Brilliant Cheesiness?.......2004-12-05

At first listen, this album is laughingly absurd. At second listenting, it is still absurd, but not so laughingly. After repetition, you will be disturbed to find that this poppish minimalist music grows and grows on you, despite its absurdity. Where is the buzz coming from? Why won't the kingdom open? What is love doing on the couch? This work is melodically similar to Mishima and The Thin Blue Line. And yes, triplets do abound. But this does not diminish the album. The vocals sound like they are straight off of the TV show "Whose Line is it Anyway?," but as corny as this might sound, it only adds to the mystery.

Addiction to Liquid Days.......2003-10-24

I have been somewhat worried and embarrassed by my reaction to this album--I have played it almost daily since I bought the CD used in Record and Tape Traders over a year ago. My previous exposure to Glass had been listening to my son's orchestra rehearse and perform one of his compositions, which I enjoyed thoroughly. I also bought it because Paul Simon and Linda Ronstadt are among my favorites (I'm low brow). My initial reaction to Liquid Days was amazement and amusement. After playing it through a couple of times, I was hooked. For me it is a kind of religious experience. What seemed like flaws initially, like primitive voice quality in parts, peculiar phrases, absent transitions, began to sound absolutely right with repeated listening. I find myself humming and singing the songs in the shower, and they have even turned up in my dreams. That can't be normal, but it's a harmless addiction. I keep the CD in the car, and when the news is stressful, the traffic deadful, and even the NPR classical music station is too abrasive for my inflamed sensibilities, I pop Liquid Days into the CD player and "chill". I bought another copy of the CD from Amazon to give to my son's orchestra director, in gratitude for turning me on to Glass. I also took him to a Phillip Glass concert for his birthday and tried to get up my nerve to go backstage afterward to talk to "Uncle Phil", as the birthday boy referred to him. My nerve failed, sadly, but he's a local boy so I may get another chance. Meanwhile, I heartily recommend the album to those who are able to listen in moderation.

Keep it slow, ladies... .......2007-02-28

This album was released during an era where slow jams were in and giving up-tempo R&B flavor a try was also in. Like many of their counterparts during that time, the pretty ladies of Changing Faces needed to realize their strength in ballads and avoided trying any up-tempo material. However, there are a couple of good tunes on this album, particularly the slow jam, "All Is Not Gone", where sorrow and regret serves as a theme for a song that was definitely written with the intent of winning over ones with heartbreaks in their history. R. Kelly-produced hit "Stroke You Up" was a radio smash, but the lyrics weren't exactly poetic or articulate. But, it's still a popular track that may bring back some old school nostalgia for some of you.

Sounds of a still recent past.......2006-09-27

Even if i've loved their last album more than the previous two, this has been a good start for these singers. Obviously, while you're listening to these musical arrangements you can easily guess the period when the album has been released. But considering what kind of disks we found currently on the shelfs of the music stores, i truly can't say that Changing Faces deserves some of the very negative reviews that i've read here. I disagree about every comment not strictly related to the artistic contents, because i think that this is the main problem of the modern music low quality. We often forget that the best judge for music are our ears, not our eyes...

Wack in '94. . .Still Wack in `06.......2006-04-29

In high school "Stroke You Up" was the jam, so I went downtown and bought the cassette. Let me tell you something: It took me 2 days to listen to it because it was utterly boring. Even "Stroke You Up" became unbearable to listen to. No funk, no groove- just lukewarm soul. That was the first *and* the last time I listened to "Changing Faces." The two chicks who made up "Changing Faces" had airy, monotonous vocals- no edge to their voices at all. Even the album cover looked boring. These chicks had no style or any type of pizzazz at all. Skip this at all costs and get Zhane.

Changing Faces Need 2 Change Topics.......2005-10-18

Wow R. Kelly really influnced so many artists throughout the early 90s Sex Craze. Every song on the radio was about sex and I found that to be very irritating. Stroke You Up is one of those songs that pushed the (RIAA) limits that had every adolescent girl singing about something she'd probably never done before. I find it sad that people listen to this mess and actually enjoy it. Even though the album is quite old now that dont take away the fact this album is still garbage years later. People really need to find something worth spending money on besides pointless silly immature songs like the one's found throughout this whole entire album. Nothing on her is enjoyable, just a bunch of watered down medicore R&B songs with bad writing that some record producer through together in about 10 minutes time. If that is R&B music then maybe I need to find a different gerne. Skip this if you're into Old School R&B Music.

I remember this debut album. I love that song Stroke U Up. That was the slow jam. On this album,The duo's vocal performances reasurred the audience that '90s R&B can be smooth as ever. The songs speak about romance and heartbreak. This album truly favor mid-tempo music. This album has been certified Gold. Remember,this was 1994-1995. I love the videos by the way.

Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Great album by Underoath, better than Define the Great Line........2007-06-10

This album is the third album released by Underoath, and it is quite different from "Cries of the Past" and "Act of Depression" as it has more melodic touches and the overall sound is not as hard as those two albums. However, the album itself is composed very nicely; the guitar riffs go along very nicely with each song, and the melodic synthesizer adds a unique catchy rhythm to certain songs.

This album may be hard to get used to for those who started listening to Underoath through "They're Only Chasing Safety" or "Define the Great Line", as the vocalist is completely different. Dallas Taylor's voice in this album is raw and high-pitched, it takes getting used to--but after you do, the voice fits with the songs.

Some flaws that people may see in this album is that it sounds too poppy, but I felt that the poppiness and hardcore sound of the album is very well balanced--the hardcore sound exerts the energy of the album while the poppy sounds add to the emotional touch of the album. There are some amazing breakdowns in this album, such as near the end of the songs "Angel Below" and "Short of Daybreak". I feel that each song was given equal attention to when created.

The album starts off with a great single "When the Sun Sleeps", which is actually the only song with a chorus inside the album. It may leave the listener longing for more chorus-type songs, but once again, this album takes getting used to.

Some of the best songs in this album are:

Angel Below, When the Sun Sleeps, Short of Daybreak, The Changing of Times, Letting Go of Tonight, The Best of Me.

Another thing that I enjoyed about this album is that it flowed quite nicely from beginning to end--each song showed purpose and ended in a good manner. The album ends with the song "Alone In December" which adds the cherry on top of the cake.

I really loved this album, and I highly recommend it for old Underoath listeners and new Underoath listeners alike--it may take some getting used to, but it's worth it.

My rating: 5/5, if it were out of 10 then I would rate this album a 9.5/10.

This is my opinion:
Out of the "The Changing of Times", "They're Only Chasing After Safety", and "Defining the Great Line", I think this album is the best out of all of them. Many people say this album sucks, but they are wrong. I actually at first feared buying this cd because the online reviews said this cd SUCKED. So I bought the most recent CD's of them and they did not leave me that satisfied then I decided to put myself into the challenge and bought the CD.

MY COMMENT:
Boy, were the comments wrong! This CD is there best cd out of all of them!
Their singing and screaming is good. If you like the old-school Underoath, there are some songs here that are going to satisfy your taste, but do not exceed your expectations to high. This cd is a singing/screaming emo genre, but I have to say it sounds good! A Message for adrienne is a good song, and The Sun Still Sleeps also is a good song. I really have to say though, the whole CD is great. It sounds nothing like Taking Back Sunday, which the two most recent cd's sound like. If you are into the screaming and singing rock, then this should be the CD for you!

i guess dallas and octavio leaving is the best thing that could ever happen to underoath, this was by far the worst underoath c.d. i've ever heard. i'm not sure if it's because it was back when they were younger or because of the difference in members but damn am i glad they've changed. their best c.d. so far is "they're only chasing safety" but "define the great line" is right behind it, not as great but still good. what that guy said about aaron was stupid, it may have upset you that he asked them to leave but he's smart for it. also, he's far from a fruit, he's an AMAZING drummer and great singer. he pretty much makes the band, sure spencer is good but aaron adds a special BAM to it. unlike other crappy christian bands. they have my complete respect.

The Dallas Taylor, Octavio era..........2006-03-24

This is probably the best #1 album Underoath came out with, a top with Cries of the Past and Act of Depression. This album is a deffinite plus to buy, as well as their previous ep's Cries and Act of Depression. This album has a lot to do with Dallas' personal life, as well as his relationship with Jesus Christ. Before the Underoath members rid the band of Dallas and Octavio, both of them were the basic heart and soul of Underoath, in fact the founders. And the fact that these two very talented individuals was kicked out by that fruit Aaron Gilespie and that keyboardist dude kinda ticks me off. In my opinion, Dallas should've fought back against this when Aaron asked him to leave, and I'm guesing Octavio left because Dallas left.

I urge u buyers out there to search for this album, buy it, and keep it till u die. You won't regret it. Also look for their ep's as well. And keep this in mind, this band wasn't formed by Aaron (drummer/ singer), it was formed by Dallas Taylor in 1999 in Dallas' bedroom.

This album owns Chasing Safety.

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

At last!!!.......2007-03-19

I suppose I could gripe that both "Polyrock" and "Changing Hearts" could easily have fit onto one compact disc; but frankly I'm so delighted that both of these titles are finally available in the digital format that I'm not going to complain. Having worn out vinyl copies of both of these albums years ago, I can testify to the utter brilliance of this music. Still sounding as modern today as it did 25+ years ago, fans of Philip Glass, minimalism (God, I hate that word) and dance music will find much to adore here. That neither of these albums set the music world on fire shouldn't surprise anyone. Commercial, it's not. Intelligent, well-played and spectacularly-produced, it is. Open your ears, buy these discs and hear what you've been missing.

On CD at last--but where is the bonus????.......2007-03-16

One of two wonderful things could have made the release of Polyrock's 2 LPs on CD even better:

1) both albums could have been on one CD
2) OR, even better, it would have been perfect to have the 5 track 1982 EP "Above the Fruited Plain" as bonus tracks on either CD. Perhaps they couldn't secure the rights from the label. But now I fear those 5 tracks will never make a CD appearance at all.

Very musical.......2006-06-24

Hopefully those who get these two CDs in a single set will be able to appreciate this music without worrying much about which song is on which CD. I am used to hearing some of these songs at the end of a 2-record set called `Relics of the Incredible String Band.' "This Moment" seemed like the perfect ending for that attempt to capture the joys of existence in songs. "I just want to tell each one of you that each note, it is different from any before it, each note, it is different, it's now." Getting more songs after that is like Richard Brautigan trying to come up with 186,000 endings per second for the novel A CONFEDERATE GENERAL FROM BIG SUR. "Fair As You" is a nice, soft, flutey ending, stating the impossibility of having a song which is as fair as you. The eleven minutes penultimately placed between those two songs provides the sentimental message, "`When You Find Out Who You Are' beautiful beyond your dreams." I think that message is sentimental, but my mood might be influenced as much by the spirit in which these songs are sung and float in my memory. Some of their themes might make you feel like you are in church, and if you like `Sleepers, Awake!' you should probably get up on Sunday mornings and see how the church choir is doing. Modern peer to peer filesharing habits are like the chorus of `Dust Be Diamonds:' "buy for a million and sell for a dime." These are the songs by the Incredible String Band that I heard first, because I did not discover the group until 1970, and everyone I knew then was moving so much, no one had a complete collection of anything. If you never heard the Incredible String Band, starting with this set might be good enough so you'll never forget them.

Begging To Differ . . ........2004-12-31

I have just read the other review for this item and, sometime after the fact, thought I would put a completely opposite point of view. While I Looked Up is okay, and nothing more (neck and neck with No Ruinous Feud in the Least Enjoyable ISB Album Stakes), Changing Horses is a near masterpiece that pays repeated listening. It is obviously not in the same league as such monumental classics as Wee Tam & The Big Huge, Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, etc., but that does not diminish its plus points:
1. Big Ted: whimsical, amusing, take it on its own terms and be entertained.
2. White Bird: a prolonged joy. Not as rambling and unfocused as it seems if the original Indian music is listened to. Sheer beauty. So uplifting it's almost painful!
3. Dust Be Diamonds: more whimsy, slight but still enjoyable.
4. Sleepers, Awake!: I just love this song.
5. Mr. and Mrs.: the low point of the album but not as low as some critics would have you believe. Quite tolerable.
6. Creation: possibly Robin Williamson's finest ISB related hour. A masterwork without a doubt!

SO GLAD to see the Incredible String Band CDs released again! The only potential drawback is nabbing two ISB albums, not always on the same level.

As much as I love The Incredible String Band, "Changing Horses" is one of those releases that I spun over and over, and each time it left me flat. While I wouldn't call it horrible music, it comes off as a long studio session in need of some quality editing. Songs like "Dust Be Diamonds" and "White Bird" ring like songs that start off with promise but wind up with nowhere to go.

"I Looked Up," on the other hand, is prime ISB! Blackjack Davey is an upbeat ballad that will spin through your head after just one sampling. On the other end of the mood spectrum, "Pictures In a Mirror," is the chilling narrative of Lord Randall awaiting and experiencing his execution in a hallowed jail. This is the perfect song to play to a room full of friends (friends who, preferably, are unfamiliar with the Incredible String Band!) during a late night blackout (a thunderstorm outside outside helps too!) I've tried it, and it creeps out my compadres without fail!

"I Looked Up" is a solid album all around. If you are new to The Incredible String Band, and want to pick up the best of these double-CD compilations, I recommend "The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter/5000 Spirits" combo.

Despite my lackluster opinion of "Changing Horses," this CD is worth the price for "I Looked Up" alone. And, in all fairness, The Incredible String Band went through a lot of phases; some fans like their earlier releases, some prefer the later albums that introduced electrical instruments into the band's repetoire. This combo is a good dose of two sounds of ISB. Who knows, maybe you will find something hep in "Changing Horses" that escaped me?
