There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars You 're The One That I Want.......2007-04-03

The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26

Well here we are with a great piece of history.

This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06

I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.

Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.

This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.

The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.

3 out of 5 stars If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15

Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

Plucked from a wet afternoon of busking Bizet and Puccini to passersby on the Piazza in Covent Garden in the spring of 2001, soprano Rebecca Knight and mezzo Karen England soon found themselves singing in slightly larger venues: the FA Cup and Champions League soccer finals. That the management company doing the plucking had recently performed a similar Cinderella crossover act for Russell Watson offered portent, and indeed the Babes--the moniker began as a joke--were soon on their way to this recording debut. The marketing shtick and its soccer connections may offend purists, but it's the football hooligans that the Babes are trying to win over here; can Borodin soothe the savage Manchester United fan? Their classically trained voices mesh gloriously, with England's warm mezzo showing particular character in her solo turns.

The repertoire choices here cover material that may already be familiar to fans of Charlotte Church (i.e., Delibes "Flower Duet") and other crossover acts, but they do include some pleasant surprises, like Offenbach's Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffmann and "You Live On in My Heart," a reworking of Ennio Morricone's enchanting Cinema Paradiso theme with lyrics by Knight. But in a rush toward the musical middle of the road, it's the productions themselves that sometimes overwhelm the Babes with bathos ("Ave Maria"), hollow thunder ("Aida 2002"), and electro club kitsch (the 'Vibe Tribe' mix of "Flower Duet"). Former Art of Noise mainstay Anne Dudley's tastefully restrained coloring of Tchaikovsky's "1001 Nights" is one of the notable exceptions. They're babes, they sing opera--with fair promise--for the masses, and if they turn one in a hundred from football hooliganism to a well-mannered appreciation of Grieg and Dvorák, won't it all have been worth it? --Jerry McCulley

overorchestrated, overproduced aural wallpaper...that said, still, these women have wonderful voices and are worth hearing. They are oversold,too...Opera Babes! Indeed. Folks who like Enya will like this.

5 out of 5 stars simply beautiful, so just enjoy it.......2007-06-11

my daughter has taught me to love opera. this immediately captured me. the Babes' voices blend so beautifully. I love it! who cares about Puccini, Classic Opera, blah, blah, woof, woof. I love this album

2 out of 5 stars Sloppy renditions and amateurish.......2007-05-15

I heard one of the selections on Sirius and liked it so I bought the CD. Upon hearing the entire CD I was disappointed that the only selection I liked was the one that prompted me to buy the product. The voices are nice but they are simply adding voice to opera masterpieces that do not fit. They are certainly not of the caliber of Sarah Brightman or Charlotte Church and don't look for that. Their sound is mellow, dim and without the emotion that does an inservice to the opera pieces they sing. I found the CD lackluster and in all honestly very "amateurish".

5 out of 5 stars Great songs reinvented, with a twist.......2006-09-30

Expanding upon the recent interest in Gregorian chant fusion as well as rich-voiced solo vocalists such as Josh Groban, operatic soprano Rebecca Knight and mezzo soprano Karen England offer full-vibratoed, somewhat modernized interpretations of favorite classical themes. Backed by chorus, orchestras, keyboards and drums, they draw from such diversely satisfying works as Puccini's opera "Madame Butterfly," Grieg's "Piano Concerto in a minor," Dvorak's "New World Symphony," Mendelssohn's "Midsummer Night's Dream," Orff's "Carmina Burana," Delibe's "Lakme," Beethoven's "Ode to Joy," Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite," Offenbach's "The Tales of Hoffman," Schubert's "Ave Maria," and Verdi's "Aida." Some of the arrangements are fairly traditional, while others are noticeably enhanced. The emphasis tends to be on pretty pieces with sweet melodies, though a few are more intense in nature (#1, 4, 5, 15 and 17). A couple of pop songs, still sung in operatic style, are thrown in for good measure, although they don't have the same appeal and mystique as the old favorites. All of the selections feature both vocalists together, singing in lovely, close harmony. The arrangers of this elegantly hip music include Jon Cohen, Noely, Frank Gallagher, Deni Lew and Anne Dudley, with multi-language lyrics (for the adaptations of instrumental works) by Rebecca Knight and others. I have to admit that I occasionally found myself longing for the modern additions to be more consistently interesting and distinctive--in other words, equaling the artistry of the classics that they're accompanying. Track #1, which really shines, is a well-done example. Alternately, perhaps the source songs might have been better off left in their pure, original styles rather than watered down with schmaltzy, predictable underpinnings that don't add much to the music. But like Enigma did for medieval chant, the Opera Babes are endeavoring to bring some wonderful, time-tested music to a wider audience, fusing it with modern idioms in way that is artistic and generally appealing. For more opera fusion, compare the work of Amici Forever (a group of five singers, both male and female), and the oddly packaged but similar-in-concept album "Coco de Mer" by Adam Plack.

5 out of 5 stars Praise for Beyond Imagination.......2006-02-26

What I really enjoyed about this album was its distinctive sound and arrangement of the material. I enjoy classically performed opera and was surprised how much I like the Opera Babes' versions. Of course, the wonderful voices added immensely to the high quality of this product.

Album Description

An Excerpt from the Linear Notes...

"When my wife and I took a vacation to Germany in November of 1998, I must admit I was totally unprepared for what awaited us there. I had always imagined Germany a rather dark, industrial country. I couldn't have been more wrong. Germany is a land of wonders, filled to capacity with ancient castles and cathedrals. Everywhere we went we seemed to look back in time. There were days we felt like we were exploring a fairy-tale land; a strange, storybook world, where everything was bigger and more fantastic. Needless to say, it was an extraordinary trip, and a wonderful adventure.

After we arrived back in the States, I found my mind returning again and again to our time in Germany. Before long, I began to put some of my favorite memories to music, trying to capture, in some small way, the moments that made the biggest impact on me. That's how this album, a collection of musical 'postcards', came to be."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Postcards from Germany.......2007-01-10

I am very happy with this CD. The song i most wanted; One Night at Motzarts, is very beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2003-05-03

I "discovered" David's music on a popular music website about a year ago. I've been hooked ever since. His compositions, while simple, are absolutely elegant. "Postcards from Germany" takes me away- to alpine heights and heavenly realms. Comtemplative. Spiritual. Prayerful. Romantic.

Mozart would be proud. ;-)

5 out of 5 stars The Newest Piano Sensation.......2003-04-29

If you enjoy the music of Jim Brickman, George Winston and David Lanz you will love David Nevue. He is an extraordinary artist and musician. His music is absolutely wonderful. You will not be disappointed in this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Different, but breathtaking nonetheless........2003-04-26

Postcards differed from the normal David Nevue sound of his previous 4 albums, but if anything it is a change for the better. As usual there is a healthy dosage of slow, melodic tracks as well as many upbeat tracks (ex. The Amazing Accordian Man). No question "One Night At Mozart's" was the fan favorite that has gotten much radio play worldwide, but my personal favorite has to be "Big Snow In Salzburg". Every time I listen to it I get a perfect mind's eye vision of a beautiful light snowfall on a pitch dark night with the stars shining majestically overhead. This is definately a CD for any instrumental/piano lover. Get it (and Nevue's 6 other albums) AS FAST AS YOU CAN! You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2003-04-26

"Postcards From Germany" is a collection of fourteen solo piano pieces inspired by a trip to Germany that David Nevue and his wife took a few years ago. Most of the tracks are quietly poetic, offering musical glimpses of places and experiences encountered on the trip. There are no polkas or beer-garden romps, but rather the subtle beauty of the countryside and the explorations of castles and cathedrals. This is David Nevue's sixth CD, and his artistry grows with each new release. The title track carries a feeling of setting out on a new adventure, full of anticipation and hope. "Wonderland" is a gorgeous piece that has an easy, contented sense of peace and serenity. It evokes images of gently falling snow or a meadow full of wildflowers and the gentlest of breezes. "In God's Hands" offers a sense of surrender and a willingness to let go of control. A deeply religious man, Nevue often composes about his spiritual life. Sometimes these compositions are a bit turbulent (as on "The Vigil"), but this piece is tranquil and serene. Nevue mentions in the liner notes that he and his wife were impressed at how often both of them strongly felt the presence of God during their travels, and this comes across in several of the pieces. "The Kindness of Strangers" is a warm and happy "thank you" to a stranger who led the couple out of a mountain snowstorm and took them in for the night. "The Walled City" is probably my favorite track on this CD. It is a little bigger, moodier, and more complex. There is a mysterious feeling as well as a sense of sadness. It is an especially beautiful and evocative piece. "Castle Hunting" is lighthearted and reminds me a little of some of Robin Spielberg's compositions. It suggests the fun of exploring something new and finding delightful little surprises at every turn. "Postcards From Germany" is an excellent CD, and I recommend it very highly.

Album Description

Vince Clarke has this to say about the new single: 'I'm having a mid-tempo crisis! Our albums seem to have got slower and slower, so I started searching for classic funk or disco basslines, put some ideas together with chord changes and basslines underneath, and emailed them to Andy for him to sing over the top. The single, like the forthcoming album (living at the end of the world), is quite 'up' and uptempo because we're both in good spaces right now. '

3 out of 5 stars Erasure is back!!! :) .... but not on this single :(.......2007-04-12

Erasure's new single, "I Could Fall In Love With You", is finally out and it is a good track, not amazing, but good. For anyone who is unfamiliar with Erasure, they might get more out of this track as it is very well produced, but for the longtime fans they might be slightly disappointed with the flatness of the overall feeling of this song compared to the rest of the songs from the new forthcoming album, "Light At The End Of The World".

ICFILWY really lacks the wow-factor that a first single from an album should possess. It actually is the worst song on the album, but by no means it is a bad song in any way. It is merely that when compared to the rest of the album, it just doesn't compare. Instead, they should have released "Sunday Girl" as the first single.

On previous albums, the first singles were freaking amazing, tracks like "Sometimes", "Chains of Love", "Chorus", "Always", "Fingers & Thumbs", and "In My Arms". They really captured a new feeling from album to album and gave you a sense of what the new material was going to be like, fresh and exciting. In contrast, Erasure's last several albums, "Loveboat", "Other People's Songs" and "Nightbird", had fairly weak first singles, but I would say those albums were not nearly as good of quality overall, so they really would not have had much better choices even if they chose other songs from those albums, and there were better songs to choose in those cases.

However, those recent albums were not Erasure's best work. But this new album, "Light at the End of the World" is a complete return to their earlier talents and it really lives up to the fans' expectations in almost every way, musically and emotionally. They have never gone away, yet the feeling that Erasure is "back" on this new album is an understatement. This new album is really amazing and it deserved a much better first single release.

Supposedly, "Sunday Girl" is going to be the second single. This will be a big seller and should please longtime fans and I will dare to say it could bring them a whole new slew of fans whom might never of heard of them before. If they are wise, they will release "Sucker For Love" as the third single, and make it a double A-side with "Golden Heart".

The b-side on this single, "I Like It", is a total b-side type of song. The lyrics/melodies are underdeveloped, the song goes on a little too long, and it does not musically match the new material from the new album, but it is really funky and very well produced! I wish they had had more time to spend on this one because it was a very different sound for them and I would have liked to see it developed more deeply. It doesn't sound very "Erasure-ish", but it is pretty cool in any case!

As a long time fan who adores them so much, it is so good to know that Erasure is making it in the music business and that they continue to make great music, play to live audiences, and have such longevity...not to mention some of the most dedicated fans in the world. They are one of the best bands of all time, and I am glad that people can still be exposed to their incredible talent.

5 out of 5 stars Classical to catch the pop ear.... .......2004-09-30

Others have commented on the technical aspects of this; I'd like to talk about the cultural aspects of contemporary classical music and Miss Klass' interpretations (which are very beautiful...).

Myleene Klass is doing something the traditionalists have abandoned: she's making classical music accessible to a contemporary audience. With many kids, you say the words "classical music" and they turn off. They're not interested. But Myleene Klass, Vanessa Mae and others are trying to reverse that trend.

Classical traditionalists are missing the fact that classical music will cease to be a viable art form if new listeners and artists aren't attracted from each generation. Most classical musicians these days are working in the entertainment industry, producing soundtracks for games, movies and TV. There's not much market for classical composition outside of these industries. Fortunately, that's where today's budding musicians are getting exposed to classical music. But Beethoven and Mozart are not accessible to many people.

That's only one reason why artists like Myleene Klass are important. (The fact that she's technically competant and an excellent compositor is an added bonus.) Art must evolve, too...

Besides, Mozart and Beethoven were the hipster bad-boy pop stars of their day. They were sexy, cutting edge and daring. They would both hate the pillar they've been put on, and throw screaming tantrums at the dusty way they've been turned into inviolate idols. They jammed on other composer's music (AKA variations), just as modern electronic artists mash and mix contemporary work. I think they'd be happy to have Miss Klass and her wonderful versions of their work.

1 out of 5 stars crap crap crap.......2004-09-24

i wish people like this would stop "making music." this chick, charlotte church, and andrea bocelli is WHAT"S WRONG with classical music. dumbing down bach for the masses is disrespectful to all true classical musicians, composers, conductors... etc. this is such crap.

5 out of 5 stars I've had Goosebumps for weeks now.......2004-06-05

When I first heard this amazing collection of both classical music and a little but of hip-hop, I was mesmorized. I listen to this day in and day out. Beautiful songs, consisting of Toccata and Fugue, For the Love of a Princess (From Braveheart), Allegretto, If You're Not the One, The Heart Asks Pleasure First, Moonlight Sonara, Krwling (From Linkin Park), Pavane- Moving On, Adagio (Edgar Cello Concerto), Sarabande, Now We are Free (From Gladiator), Gymnope`die- Live the Dream and a BONUS TRAK, the classical version of Moonlight Sonata. Each and every one of these songs has a little twist on it, by Myleene Klass. As a classical music lover, and a hip-hop fan, this is the perfect CD for everyone wanting to listen to something new. I myself am a classical music player, I have played the piano for 14 years and have never heard anything like this. So take it from me, this will be loved by children and adults alike.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid collection of Klassical music from Myleene Klass.......2004-02-11

Formerly of the now-dissolved British bigender pop group Hear'Say, Myleene Klass turned from post-Spice type pop to classical, a big shift considering the genres involved. Her instrument's the piano and she does have a symphony orchestra backing her up. Her selections straddle classical, pop, and even soundtrack scores, with arrangements done by herself and Nick Patrick, and bolstered by the Telephilmonic Orchestra.

"Toccata" is Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor. Accompanying the symphony and Myleene is a light drum machine not as boisterous as Massive Attack.

Myleene next gets the ivories around the sad but romantic "For The Love Of A Princess," the love theme from Braveheart, one of three soundtrack themes she does. The orchestra's backing helps the atmosphere of this song, as does the light drum machines towards the end. "The Heart Asks Pleasure First" from The Piano, and Michael Nyman's score, is truly a showcase for Klass for the first minute before the orchestra kicks in. And I never saw Gladiator, but she does a Myleene Mix of "Now We Are Free", meaning some light drums and a Benedectine-type choir.

"Allegretto" is from Karl Jenkins' Palladio and this is more conventional than the way left-field version done by Bond on their second album Shine. Done with lots of feeling and uptempo without the oontsa-oontsa techno beats.

Myleene does an instrumental arrangement of Daniel Bedingfield's hit single "If You're Not The One." Her piano playing matches Bedingfield's falsetto in the chorus section. I like this better than the original due to the lush string arrangements. I like her rendition of Linkin Park's "Crawling," titled here "Krlwng," but then again, I haven't heard the original and never intend to. I'll bet it's way better. Light drum machines present in this one.

"Pavane-Moving On" is taken from Gabriel Faure's Pavane, Opus 50, a melancholy and reflective piece, that is until the orchestra takes over in the second minute.

"Adagio" is taken from Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto in E Minor, Opus 85 and "Sarabande" from Georg F. Handel's Suite No. 11 in D Minor. The strings oft-times sound like what Bond did with Zeppelin's "Kashmir", a fierce jerking back and forth of strings.
There are two versions of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata," one which the light drum programming, the other, a bonus track, without. Both showcase Klass's piano work.

"Gymnopedie-Live The Dream" is taken from Eric Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1, which Charlotte Church used for "From My First Moment" on Enchantment. However, Klass whispers some words as she plays in the beginning: "Did you ever stop to think what gives you strength to live another day? The breath in your body, the kisses you feel. It's all so simple, but never real. Maybe the strength you strive to show is so deep within. But it's true, I know. Welcome love, however far it seems. Go live the dream."

I've devised a Cartesian system for the wave of neo-classical music prevalent right now with two dimensions, vocal/non-vocal and progressive (mixed)/conventional. Despite the brief spoken words in "Live The Dream", Klass is more on the non-vocal/conventional quadrant but due to her covering soundtrack scores and popular tunes and the use of drum machines, she's not as far to the right of the quadrant as Eroica Trio, whereas neo-classics like Brightman, Church, and Hayley Westenra would be in the progressive/vocal quadrant, diametrically opposite Eroica Trio. However, Klass has the looks of a Maxim or FHM model, so if we use that in the measure of progressive vs. conventional, that might move Klass more left of the axis.

A worthy debut from Myleene Klass, helping to define the face of neo-classical today, and that's not just Hear'say (or do I mean hearsay?), that's plain truth.

5 out of 5 stars Best Contemporary Classical Ever.......2004-01-17

This album is surprisingly beautiful (I discovered this CD thru a friend's recommendation-thanx MO, it's worth the shipping, lol). I liked the movie themes a lot especially the gladiator theme (the chants and the fusion of instruments made this soundtrack exceptional). Her version of Toccata is even better than Vanessa Mae(i hope i'm right).I think the best track in this album is either Gymnopedie or Pavane(It's the best version i ever heard to be honest).Great for chill-out moods, great when your stuck in the traffic, great when you're preparing a meal or having a meal. There's also a surprise cover of linki'n park's "Crawling" which i find very powerful and moving. Obviously, the tracks are composed of popular old tunes but given new interpretations. It seems that these are the pianist's favorites and as such, it is subject to be one's own

My Writer's Block Party CD is a highly portable digital smorgasbord for the ears and the mind with just the right mix of of new music, spoken word and comedy.

The producers have collected and put in one convenient place what I could have never discovered on my own even after spending hours listening to several different kinds of radio station formats and reading piles of newspapers, periodicals and literary magazines...and then ignoring all the stuff I wasn't interested in.

I have listened to it at home, in my car, on a plane, at the gym and at work. It's a wonderful audio magazine full of surprises and delights and I can't wait for future releases!

        4 out of 5 stars Eclectic Entertainment.......2002-04-26

Tired of the same old, same old? Looking for something new in the way of electronic entertainment? Well, look no further than "Writers' Block Party." It's an eclectic mix of humor, song and spoken word. From the haunting lyrics of Jonny Polonsky to the wit of Billy Collins and Patricia Marx, you'll want to "read" this audio magazine again and again.

5 out of 5 stars original, inovative, enjoyable........2002-04-26

I really enjoyed listening to the CD, which is a totally new genre on the musical/literary scene. It compiles very different artists and pieces (poems, monologues, playwrights, songs...) and made me discover very talented people. My favorites are probably the poem "Forgetfulness" by acclaimed poet Billy Collins, and the song "Say goodbye if you die" by The Goods, very humorous lyrics on a funky tune. The producer/editor did a great job putting all those artists together for us to discover, and even the booklet is like a mini-magazine to read. Writers'Block Party definitely deserves to be called an Audio Magazine, I hope you will enjoy it too and I'm looking forward to listening to Issue Two.
