The year is 2023. A constant rain falls on the denizens of Continuous City, where multinationals rule, all music not sanctioned by the state is outlawed, and individuality is frowned upon. Enter Tom Third, armed only with a laptop, a few replicant friends, and a determination to make music reflecting his feelings of anonymity and alienation while offering a glimmer of humanity. Such is the sound of Continuous City, a collection of futuristic trip-hop and drum & bass presided over by programmer-producer Third. Full of cool beats and cooler vocals shot through with neon horns, Third's third disc glides from the flotation chamber warmth of "Freefall" to skittish, anxious instrumentals like "Ant Farm." Generally, these vocal-less tracks--which make up the majority of the album--are less memorable or interesting than, say, Williamson's Björk impression on "Winter" or cooing vocal on "I Wish I." One exception is the creepy cocktail noir of "The Tenth Victim," a track that shares its title with a 1965 Italian movie about a future where assassins are the new celebrities. More Blade Runner than Flash Gordon, Third is adventurous enough to warrant more attention--both from listeners and the overlords of Continuous City. --Shawn Conner
