Very dark and creepy, though not one of his best.......2006-06-02
While Find Candace certainly isn't one of Snares' best releases, it's still very solid. It's supposed to be the partner album to Doll Doll Doll, sharing similar artwork, references to dolls and indeed, a remix of Befriend A Child Killer which was originally featured on Doll Doll Doll. The overall atmosphere of this EP is definitely similar to Doll Doll Doll as well. Dark and harrowing in it's nature, Find Candace full of deep, grumbling bass lines, creepy synth melodies and distorted, deathly vocal samples. The overall style of the programming however is rather different. Find Candace seems to use more simple drum beats rather than the crazy, frenetic percussion used in most of his work. Consequently, the EP often sounds a little empty compared to some of his stuff, though it makes up for it with the overall vibe which can be very haunting in places. The title track stands out as perhaps the strongest song of the album. If you're looking for a sample, there's a great video made for it available on www.vsnares.com.
While I wouldn't recommend this album to a newcomer of Venetian Snares, if you're already a fan then it's well worth it. Don't be mislead by the three star rating - that's still 60%. I just don't really want to give it four because I find this release somewhat underwhelming compared to most of his others.
Also, if you're not really into his usual work, this album with it's more simple approach to programming might take your fancy.
