5 out of 5 stars To Call It Epic Would Be An Understatement.......2007-06-11

This album is perhaps one of the most listened albums in my house. This album has completely opened my eyes to the world of music. On the first few listens, I didn't think much of it, other than Clubbed To Death. But soon after, I began to listen and love every single song, especially "Drinking Song". Nothing puts my mind to ease more than it. It simply is a work of art, a beautiful craft of melodies. It has changed my life and the way I see things.

I await eagerly to see Dougan's future works.

Signed, Dougan's #1 fan.

5 out of 5 stars Fool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-02

Anyone who didn't buy this is a fool! This is a great and wonderful record. The music fills the room, and the videos are magnificent! This man deserves to, in the future, be remembered as the great composer of the 21st century. Just Listen!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite album.... I think that sums it all up........2006-09-15

Rob Dougan was a techno artist that has released this fantastic techno masterpiece in 1996. "Clubbed To Death" was used in THE MATRIX (think: The intstrumental Hip-hopish song that plays during the part where Morpheus freezes time in the matrix) and that is where he got his popularity.

DISC ONE is not really my thing- His voice is kinda raspy and terrible.

DISC TWO is more like it- I listen to the instrumentals more often.

So buy this!

4 out of 5 stars Terrific Instrumentals.......2006-07-08

The Matrix soundtrack introduced to Rob Dougan. I was drawn to the instrumentals rather than the songs with lyrics. Buy it for the instrumentals.

5 out of 5 stars changed the way I listened to music.......2006-06-08

If you are like me you won't really like this album the first time through; but you will be thinking about it long after its over. You will put it in the cd player again to give it another listen and this is how Rob Dougan gets you. I have gone through 3 copies of this cd. Finally with the purchase of the iPod, I won't have to buy another one. The music is so beautiful and strong all the way through from start to finish. It takes you up and takes you down, it brings out so many different emotions its almost unexplainable. Furious Angels is probably my favorite album that I have ever purchased. I bought it in Kuwait on my way into Iraq when the war was kicking off over there. The calming effect of Dougan's music got me through so many tense nights when I didn't know if I would wake up the next morning. They say music tames the savage beast, it also calms the nerves of the ones affected by the beast.....
All the time the reviewers tell you the favorite songs, I have none really, I cherish them all the same. I can't tell you in words how well the album flows from track 1 to track 15. It is the kind of album you just don't skip ahead on, you listen to the whole thing like a story being told.
I don't know if this review will help anyone, but I just want to say how the music makes me feel inside. Rob Dougan offers you an escape from reality, if only for a little while.....

Album Description

Rob Dougan's 'Furious Angels' is one of the most vital records to come out in 2003, a bridge between the past & the future, as heavily orchestrated pop & soundtrack-style music comes in contact with electronica. At the center of it is Rob Dougan himself, his deeply rich, dark, & slightly gruff voice adding the element of suspense to his tension building, groove-laden, beautifully composed concoctions. Limited edition includes a bonus disc with 13 tracks, 'Clubbed to Death 2', 'Will You Follow Me?' (Instrumental), 'Furious Angels' (Instrumental), 'Left Me for Dead' (Instrumental), 'I'm Not Driving Anymore' (Instrumental), 'There's Only Me' (Instrumental), 'Instrumental' (Instrumental), 'Nothing at All' (Instrumental), 'Born Yesterday' (Instrumental), 'Speed Me Towards Death' (Instrumental), 'One & the Same' (Instrumental), 'Clubbed to Death' (dub), & 'Furious Angels' (dub). 5 out of 5 stars In a word? Intoxicating...........2004-10-02

Rob Dougan starts the album with voices. Setting the mood for the entire album with a smooth yet eerie choir solo is "Prelude".

One note of the cello. He must hold that one note at the begining of the title track "Furios Angels" for 30 seconds. Slowly bringing in vocals the track soon builds up with violins and snare work until the beat drops with added falcetto vocals. The title track is simply amazing.

The next track "Will You Follow Me" is a symphonic piece without Rob's smoldering vocals, yet it does not lose his touch. An adventure of a piece that holds no places to lose the listener.

"Left Me for Dead" holds all the bitterness of a broken and torn relationship. Despise fills Rob's voice where, at some points in the song, he sounds to be singing through clenched teeth. Soothing strings in a minor chord fill swing in and out of Rob's vocals in a way Ive never heard before. A jazzy beat complemented by well timed cymbal work fills the backround and holds the overall mood of the song at a steady despise filled level.

"Im not Driving Anymore" is one of my favorite songs on the album. Starting with low cellos and some crafty digital effects he sets a somber mood for the duration of the song. Rob's usual rough vocals grab the attention of the listener just in time to hear the simple melody of strings pour out over the song. Driving strings take control of the song at times only for Rob to come back singing with more passion than before.

"Clubbed to Death" is the easily recognizable song from "The Matrix." A very simple yet driving strings melody takes half of the song while the other half is filled with notes running up and down the piano soothing the listeners ear.

"There's Only Me" starts of with a vinyl scratch and a yell. Calm strings move in only to be contrasted by Rob singing in a minor chord. Simple guitar mixes in to create a very somber and mournful mood.

Rob's "Insrumental" is a creative piece done entirly with strings. It is almost five minutes long yet never gets old or boring.

"Nothing at All" has a simple beat with bass and acoustic guitar providing the melody. It is a very nice change to ease the listener's ear in the middle of an album full of driving strings.

"Born Yesterday" is a slow steady song with string and accented with well timed snare work. Throughout the song, strings and piano build up until you have a driving violin feeding the listener. It then starts anew with a cello, drums, and vocals and builds itself up into the same driving violin meoldy. Falcetto vocals add a very nice touch to an already good song.

"Speed Me Towards Death" starts with fast paced strings that pours out energy over the contrasting down-tempo beat. Robs vocals flare throughout the song and seem to excite the strings. An electric guitar riff seems to mingle perfectly with everything adding to the urgent feel of the track. Horns are added in the second half of the song and keep the melody fresh.

"Drinking Song" is a ballad with Rob's gritty vioce over a piano with a string ensemble in the backround. Even with Rob's vocals, a feeling of care fills. A well timed "Pause" lets the listener catch up with themselves before the next song.

"One and the Same" pours out a feeling of love to inspire the listener.

"Clubbed to Death 2" goes back to driving strings. With a simple drum beat and melodic strings and piano, the listener is easily reminded of the origianl "Clubbed to Death."

Taking whatever stress and anger you have out of you with the first songs, this album calms you with the latter songs, and leaves you in a peaceful and tranquil mood at the end. Whatever the reason, whatever the way, Rob Dougan's Furious Angels is going to reach you.

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack for the soul..........2004-09-21

OK. Have a seat and relax. This may piss people off, BUT I am not a big fan of the Matrix movies. Not a big fan of Keanu or big screen action movies. Big explosions and cool visuals do not make up for awful dialogue and script (sorry, just my viewpoint). Anyway, I had heard Rob Dougan on a 12" remix he did for Moby that I really loved. His music is very moody, very orchestral, and yeah I dig his voice too. It helps tell the
story and sets the mood perfectly. If you like Craig Armstrong's work ("This Love" w/ Elizabeth Frasier and "Weather Storm" Massive Attack)then I think you will like this cd too. And yes, do buy Furious Angels with the bonus instrumental disc. A: you may not like his gravelly voice; and B: even if you do like his voice, the instrumentals are still phenomenal and the music can stand alone perfectly without the vocals.

5 out of 5 stars A stunning work of art........2004-08-16

I have been searching for this CD for a long time. It started with The Matrix soundtrack where I found Rob Dougan's name and started searching music of him.

Rob Dougan's music is very emotional and intense, though sometimes a little repetitive. I think Furious Angels is on the instrumental and vocal side an incredible piece of work.

Never have I felt the vibes created in Born Yesterday (the instrumental version is great).

Must buy!

5 out of 5 stars ...Incredibly Amazing..........2004-04-14

Quite possibly my favorite cd of all time, i first heard of rob dougan off of the original matrix soundtrack and spent months searching for more. After this much work, i was expecting dissapointment but, no, this album is perfect. The seamless blend of classical music and techno, rob dougan's deep raspy voice, all blend together perfectly for a most amazing musical experience.

5 out of 5 stars A Really Good CD.......2003-05-05

This by far the best mix of strings and other elemenets of classical music produced in the most modern way I've ever heard. The matrix soundtrack is great, but this is way better. This is worth the money for an import. This is the closest I've ever seen techno music that can also evoke emotions in a way similar to classical music. A damn good CD.

4 out of 5 stars Wait Till May 6.......2003-04-02

This is an awesome album, great melodic orchestral work from Rob D.......although I would've given the album 5 stars, but on May 6 is when we here in the US will get an awesome treat.
Rob Dougans album will get an official release here in the US with a bonus 12 track instrumental versions of some of the songs on the first disc. And also on the same day we get the Matrix Reloaded OST featuring Rob Dougan - "Furious Angels" (Instrumental) and a new track Rob Dougan - "Chateau" the track list for the US exclusive second disc is:
1) Will you follow me? (same track as the album) 4'31
2) Furious angels (Instrumental) 6'01
3) Left me for dead (Instrumental) 4'41
4) I'm not driving anymore (Instrumental) 4'32
5) Clubbed to death (Kurayamino variation) 7'26
6) There's only me (Instrumental) 5'36
7) Instrumental 4'28 (same track as the album)
8) Nothing at all (Instrumental) 5'52
9) Born yesterday (Instrumental) 7'31
10) Speed me towards death (Instrumental) 4'31
11) Drinking song (same track as the album) 3'58
12) One and the same (Instrumental - new mix)5'44

5 out of 5 stars A great CD.......2003-01-09

The Matrix Soundtrack is one of my favorite CD's of all time; a brilliant compilation of great hard rock and techno songs. My favorite song from it was always "Clubbed to Death" by the enigmatic Rob D; that song alone supported me on a week-long marching band trip to Ireland with no antidepressants. After looking long and hard on various search engines, I discovered that this Rob D person was really named Rob Dougan and that he had a full CD out. Despite the high price, I immediately bought it. And oh my God, was this worth the money! Every song on here with the exception of maybe one or two is excellent, just as dynamic as "Clubbed to Death." Most feature Rob's tortured, bluesy vocals that do a very good job of conveying the dark emotions expressed in the music. If you get depressed a lot, buy this CD. It will help you out of hard times. If not... then still buy this. It is worth the high price you'll pay.

5 out of 5 stars Rob Dougan is Amazing.......2002-11-29

Rob Dougan has been amazing me for about three years now, ever since I first heard the Clubbed to Death single from the Matrix movie and soundtrack. Unfortunately, I couldn't find hardly anything about this "Rob D" on the net or anywhere else for that matter, and I was really discouraged. Finally I stumbled into Cheeky Records that said that Rob Dougan was going to release a full length album in 2000. I was really excited, because by that time I had heard the Furious Angels single, which blew me away as much as Clubbed to Death had. Unforunately, Cheeky went bankrupt and Rob Dougan's CD was delayed until further notice. Thankfully BMI ended up buying Cheeky out and have finally put Rob out on a full-length CD, which I just got a couple days ago.

I'm blown away. I'm blown to pieces by Rob's CD. It has to be one of the most worthwhile purchases I've made in the past couple of months. An album with simply Furious Angels, Clubbed to Death, and I'm Not Driving Anymore on it is worth a buy, let alone one that offers so much more. I actually haven't listened to the older classics much on the CD, simply because I want to hear the new stuff. If you're open about it, the new stuff is absolutely brilliant. I will admit that you have to be in the right mood to listen to this album, the mellow mood of it isn't necessarily exactly similar to the Clubbed to Death beat, some songs are just simply something you would hear out of a film score. This is far from bad, in fact, it's amazing to see that a man whose parents owned three records can compose and arrange such a magnificent musical epic, which is that of Furious Angels. Listen with your ears open, this isn't electronic, and its not necessarily classical. It's not electronic classical, it's simply Rob with a whole bunch of amazing songs packed into a beautifully designed CD.

Buy this if you like Dougan in the least, the classics are worth it and you will probably end up loving the new pieces as well, as long as you listen with an open ear and heart.

3 out of 5 stars Half Classic Rob Dougan, Half Garbage.......2002-08-31

As an avid fan of Rob Dougan, this album was a long time coming. I was a little disappointed though. His classic tracks are as fabulous as ever ('Clubbed to Death,' 'Furious Angels'). 'I'm Not Driving Anymore' (originally from the 'Driven' Soundtrack) is of the same orchestral/heavy beat quality. These three tracks together are so brilliant they give me goose bumps everytime I hear them. 'There's Only Me', 'Nothing at All' and 'Born Yesterday' are still in the right spirit. But the rest of the album disappoints. It includes a few uninspired movie-score sounding instrumentals ('Will You Follow Me,' 'Instrumental') and one incredibly horrible wannabe U2/Las Vegas showtune 'One and the Same.' Half the album is incredible; the other seems like it was written quickly and thrown in to round out the number of tracks. The album is worth it for the incredible parts alone; just try to ignore the rest.

2 out of 5 stars Its an attempt.......2006-01-02

After hearing the first Matrix soundtrack, I thought Clubbed to Death and My Own Summer would be interesting to hear and faithful to the original. I was wrong.

My Own Summer with strings is dreary and somewhat sad, not expressing the shouting anger of the original. The riffs are fit for an electric guitar, not a cello.

Clubbed to Death is worse. The sound effects aren't played well with strings. Instead of sounding like a good effect, it sounds like a cat wailing, represented by strings. The bass in the stringed isnt great either. I love the original Clubbed to Death, but this one doesnt sound quite right.

It was an attempt, but it didnt work.

5 out of 5 stars Restrung Reignites!.......2005-12-14

Once played, I immediately understood the humor in it. Restrung has it's serious side, but at the same time, you can't help but think, "they're playing rock/heavy metal on string instruments!" Insightfully speaking, I find it funny that the majority of the music for the Matrix was composed on digital devices, yet, Restrung is performed on analog instruments. Not only this, but also the fact that they can take abrasive metal music and expose the inner beauty of their melodies and accent their percussive structures simultaneously. Converting metal music to a wonderful orchestration is no easy task; almost any director will tell you this - ask Michael Kamen, director of the San Francisco Symphony.

1 out of 5 stars 38 minutes of boredom.......2004-05-26

I like string music. I even like "tribute"-Albums, but this CD really sucks. Every track is a sleeping pill on it's own.

3 out of 5 stars Neither astonishingly good or bad.......2004-04-24

The addition of "pop" songs is a serious detraction to what might have been a good idea - I have several other tribute albums by this group of people (the Bjork one is particularly good) and while they're not the aforementioned Aopcalyptica, there are some winners on this CD.

The covers of Furious Angels is more resonant and sad than the original, while Chateau is probably the best song on the disc. I just wish they did a cover of the original Chateau Swashbucking cue Davis had written - that would make for a much better string quartet song.

4 out of 5 stars Think Apocalyptica.......2004-04-22

I'm a big fan of metal and I like most classical, so I'm a big Apocalyptica fan. I really liked the Matrix Restrung CD too.

This CD isn't quite as good as Apocalyptica, but if you like their remakes of Metallica and other heavy metal songs, plus if you like classical in general, you'll probably like this CD.

Apocalyptica somehow captures the speed and intensity of even the most driving speed-metal they remake. Some of these Restrung versions of fast Matrix songs, however, are slower renditions(other reviewer mentioned the Manson song, and it is definitely slower).

Don't believe the detractors, this CD is NOT as bad as Pat Boone's "In A Metal Mood" :)
