3 out of 5 stars The "Clinker" of the bunch.......2006-12-19

Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

5 out of 5 stars Beverly Sills: The Legend.......2003-12-05

The Art Of Beverly Sills are cd recordings that come in two volumes. If I'm not mistaken, this is Volume 2. Beverly Sills was a red-haired American opera diva who took the world by storm in the 60's and 70's. The singing sensation and phenomenon that was Beverly Sills is still talked about to this day. Her LP recordings have been digitally remastered like new and available on most music stores' classical music/opera section. They are also available right here at Amazon.com. Beverly's performances in "The Ballad Of Baby Jane Doe", "Julius Caesar" "La Fille Du Regiment" "Lucia Di Lammermoor" Donizetti's Tudor Queen Trilogy, Manon, Thais, Don Pasquale, La Traviata and many others.

In this compilation album, we find Beverly Sills taking on Verdi arias from "Vespers" and "Ernani". As always, the amazing coloratura that made Beverly Sills so famous is present in the singing, even if Sills is past her prime and closer to the decline of her voice. The best studio recordings and live recordings that find Beverly Sills in her best form are "Ballad Of Baby Doe" "Giulio Cesare" "La Fille Du Regiment" "Manon" "Lucia" and the Donizetti Tudor Queens- Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda and Roberto Devereux. It was after singing these often precarious opera roles that require a heavyweight voice, and after singing such dramatic roles as Lucrezia Borgia and Norma that Beverly Sills voice took a toll. But she knew it was worth it because she went out in a blaze of glory. In addition to Verdi, there are the charming coloratura showcases from Offenbach's "Tales Of Hoffman" Olympia's Doll Song and the lively aria from Donizetti's Don Pasquale. The lyric and restrained beauty of Mozart's Zaide aria is highly exceptional and Beverly sings it to perfection. Also here are an aria from Manon, which was one of Beverly Sills' finest performances as well as the lighter texture of the operetta "Der Opernball". This cd provides a varied and insightful look at the legendary songbird. This is a must have for all fans of Beverly Sills who are constantly looking for rare recorded material. The most rarest material on here is Beverly Sills singing Juliet from Bellini's "I Capuleti e Montechi" (Capulets and Montagues) which is still considered an obscure bel canto opera and neglected in the light of Gounod's "Romeo and Juliet" which far outshone it. Beverly Sills singing Juliet is an opera treasure and Sills attempted to popularize the opera and to make it at least as successful as Gounod's.

5 out of 5 stars A must for all opera lovers!.......2002-02-27

This CD is awesome! Sills has outdone herself and so has EMI, picking some of her finest work with arias from recital discs and complete operas. The opening aria from the Vepres Siciliennes is, in my opinion, the best recording of this terribly difficult bolero. Sills said that she had a very high fever and was hospitalized after recording four Verdi arias (this being one) and that she had no recollection of ever recording them at all!!! She thankfully does not take the high E at the end.

The Massenet gavotte from Manon is splendidly sung, as is the Doll Song from the Tales of Hoffman. Sills may have some off pitch staccatos in the Doll Song, but it sung with such swagger and confidence that one hardly notices!
The Mozart and Strauss are done in long breathed, beautiful phrases and are like silk to the ear.
The Ernani involvami from Ernani is, like the Vepres aria, definitive, at least to my ear. It has rarely if ever been sung so effortlessly with drama and character. The coloratura and high notes are splendidly sung leaving nothing to be desired!
Una voce poco fa from the Barber of Seville is also very fine, though Sills was past her best when she made this recording. She certainly sounds like the caged viper, tossing off coloratura without batting an eyelash. (Check out her earlier live recording of this aria on the Sillsiana disc -WOW!!!!! The very best, ever!). The final excerpt from Don Pasquale is similarly successful. This is late Sills but this recording finds her voice in excellent condition. Her little giggles are wonderfully caught and the vivaciousness of the character is vividly conveyed.
This disc is one of the bibles of opera singing. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars This is the favorite of all my opera recordings........1999-01-03

I was an opera major at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in the late'60's, when Beverly Sills came to perform at the famous Cincinnati Summer Zoo Opera. She also came to the conservatory to give master classes. I was a dramatic soprano, but knew she was one of the best coloraturas of her day, and knew there would be much to learn from her.

To be honest, when I heard her performance, I recognized that she was very, very good, but "best of all?" I wasn't so sure.

Then, years later, I heard this anthology recording of arias done in her prime and at her very best. Wow, this is flat-out the best singing I have ever heard.

I have given this recording to so many people I can't count. I wish it would be reissued.

5 out of 5 stars Beverly Sills Sings Operetta: A Rare Album.......2004-08-22

For fans of the 60's and 70's opera legend Beverly Sills, this rare and often neglected album will be pure gold. Fans of sopranos are willing to buy anything their favorite diva ever recorded. Beverly Sills, in collaboration with her conductor Julius Rudel and the London Philharmonic put together a kind of tribute album to Vienna's operettas and the music of its Waltz King Johann Strauss. This was originally an LP album that has been digitally remastered on cd. It is very rare and therefore very expensive and very much in demand. "Welcome To Vienna" features orchestral music- Thunder and Lightning Polka and the Overture to Johann Strauss' operetta A Night In Venice. As far as the singing, Beverly Sills delivers sheer brilliance and charm in the German-sung pieces here, starting with "Voices Of Spring" which makes use of florid and high coloratura embellishments. Beverly Sills' version is the most beautiful I've heard, on equal grounds with soprano Tracy Dahl's version. Marietta's Song from The City Of The Dead is quite moving and Beverly Sills' sweet, feminine, alluring voice truly captures the spirit of the melancholy song. Of late, only Renee Fleming sung Marietta's Lied just as beautifully.

The rest of the arias are quite well done. Beverly Sills sings beautifully in German, and she is the equal of the German master soprano Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, whom we are lead to believe she is modeling herself after in this recording. Schwartzkopf recorded an operetta album in 1959, which is available on EMI's Recordings Of The Century label. That album features much of the same pieces Beverly Sills is singing here. It's interesting to compare both singers and discover they both have artistry, skill and a floating, easy take on these non-dramatic simple pieces that are "dessert for the voice" in Sill's own words. Much like Schwarzkopf, Sills sings with refined elegance and calculated perfection. Her "In Chambre Separee" is beautiful, continental, and particularily good because Beverly Sill's French was always on the money. This aria combines French and German in a blissfully seductive way as a young maid invites a young man to an opera box where they could have dinner, champagne and a heart to heart. The Marlene Deitrich style aria "Meine Lippen" is sung perfectly by Beverly Sills. This aria is a cabaret style song in which the singer reflects on her showy, nightlife style of living. Finally, the aria "Wien, Wien" is a gorgeous praise to the city of Vienna.

I can see how this music might have been used as accompaniment to a showing of the silent film "Thief of Baghdad", or "The Sheik", or any one of those swashbucklers. Not that the exotic was all that Ketelbey indulged in, as this CD will reveal. I recommend it highly. And for those interested in historical recordings, try the 1921 Peerless Orchestra recording of "Monastery Garden", which is part of the Library of Congress archive and which is available to listen to or to download for free as a .wav file at [...]. Of particular interest for me was "Wedgewood Blue" and "Meditation", both performed beautifully.
I highly recommend this imported German CD and add that, due to the rarity of some of the tracks, it is a good idea to not delay.

This disc launches one of the great projects in the history of recording: the complete songs of Schubert, the world's greatest songwriter. Hyperion was lucky that they caught Janet Baker--a renowned Schubert singer--just at the end of her distinguished career, but still in fine voice. Graham Johnson, pianist and guiding spirit behind the whole project, has given her excellent material to work with: songs to texts by Schiller and Goethe. An auspicious beginning to a magnificent voyage of discovery. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars The Mack Daddy of Musical Series Begin here..........2006-06-27

'The Hyperion Schubert Edition, Complete Songs, Volume 1' sung by mezzo-soprano Dame Janet Baker, accompanied by pianist, Graham Johnson is, to my ear, much more satisfying than the several 'selected' Schubert collections by contemporary divas such as Renee Fleming and Anne Sophie von Otter.

Since I am a rank amateur in music appreciation, I give you my visceral impressions, and some attempt at why I think these may work for you. This recording is comprised of no more than 19 out of the over 600 Lieder composed by Franz Schubert, but they are joined by the fact that they are all based on poems by two of Germany's greatest poets (up to Schubert's time), Goethe and Schiller. Thus, there is a great uniformity in both the music and the lyrics. As someone who own's over half of this 32 CD series, I recommend this as a sample for anyone who simply wishes to see if they are interested. It may not have as much resonance as the last recordings which do Schubert's famous song cycles such as 'Die Schoene Mullerin', but they are very, very pretty, and Dame Janet certainly does them justice.

5 out of 5 stars A worthy start to a very special series........2001-08-02

The editorial comment reflects the strong recommendation given to this CD in the "Penguin Guide to Compact Discs". I add my own recommendation also, not only for this CD but for the whole project which it initiates, the plan to provide a truly complete survey of Schubert's song output.

The accompanist and moving spirit throughout is Graham Johnson. In his notes, he mentions inheriting a ten-volume Schubert edition, full of pencil markings, from legendary accompanist Gerald Moore. The older accompanist, collectors will remember, made a memorable series of Schubert lieder recordings with Dame Janet Baker. Well here is Dame Janet in her mid-fifties but still in vocal splendour, together with the younger accompanist, recorded in 1987.

One of the principles of this huge recording project is to match singers with songs. Anyone privileged to attend a recital by Dame Janet, a tall statuesque figure, will once again enjoy the experience of sharing music that seems to suit her perfectly. In "An den Mond", a song requiring a vocal range of almost two octaves, Dame Janet's lower register is used with remarkable dramatic power.

There is, moreover, the miracle of Schubert's genius, illuminating the texts of Goethe, Schiller and other of the German poets. A minor miracle is that such illumination was possible at such a young age. The 17-year-old Schubert begins, for example, the song "Nähe des Geliebten" with a swelling crescendo which accompanist and singer share, wonderfully well-contrived to suggest urgency. Other examples could be provided, but I hope this is enough to recommend this CD, if not the whole edition of 37 or more, to music lovers everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Bruckner 5th Symphony Recordings Currently Available.......2007-05-24

Nikolaus Harnoncourt's 2004 live recording of the Bruckner 5th Symphony performed by the Wiener Philharmoniker is among the finest available. It is definitely the most interesting release now, simply because Harnoncourt, as the fine musicologist that he is, has done a superb job in tying in all of Bruckner's musical influences, most notably Mozart's (For those interested in seeing how he's transformed his scholarship into actual practice, this recording includes a bonus CD of excerpts from rehearsals with the Wiener Philharmoniker, which some listeners may find more rewarding than the actual entire recording of the symphony itself, simply for giving them some important insights into Harnoncourt's musical scholarship and how he has translated it into intriguing, often successful, performances with many of Europe's great orchestras.). He has also relied on the most recent published corrected version of Bruckner's score. But, for those concerned primarily with performance, is this indeed the most exciting version available?

Long-time fans of Bruckner's music - of which I admit that I'm not with the notable exceptions of this symphony, the 4th, 7th, and maybe the 9th symphonies too - may find more rewarding Eugen Jochum's celebrated accounts with the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Dresden Staatskappelle. Speaking of the Dresden Staatskapelle, Giuseppe Sinopoli's 1999 recording may be the best recent recording, with a brash, bold interpretation that many may regard as far more interesting than Harnoncourt's. At best, Harnoncourt's interpretation is rather lush and warm, due of course to the exemplary musicianship demonstrated by the Wiener Philharmoniker. Primarily for these reasons I am a bit hesitant to mention Harnoncourt's interpretation of the Bruckner 5th Symphony as a definitive one, but it certainly merits attention from potential purchasers as among the most intriguing, best-performed accounts currently available.

1 out of 5 stars Worst version I have heard.......2007-03-25

I really love Bruckner's 5th and have heard many versions. This is the most boring, tedious, interpretation I have ever heard.
1)There is NO flow to the 1st movement-it just stops and then starts.
2) The dynamics are either VERY loud or VERY soft.
Harnoncourt nearly kills this(wonderful) music off with the lack of flow and no spontaneous energy .We know Bruckner is blocks of sound but surely Bruckner did'nt mean like this! Yes it is the VPO-I realise their playing is always excellent, but the interpretation itself is like watching paint dry.It is so portentous and slow! I bet the VPO wished someone like Wand,or even Barenboim were conducting them instead. The recording is also curiously dead-it has no life. For an alive acoustic listen to Chailly on Decca(though his interpretation, while miles better is a little bit ordinary).
I really do not understand why this version gets great reviews.I played it to a musician friend and he also said it was terrible.
Listen to Wand with NDR(1990 recording)or Barenboim(BPO on Teldec- a very exciting 1st mvt apart from too slow an intro so bear with me)instead.

This new Bruckner 5th from Harnoncourt and the Vienna Philharmonic enters the ranks of the finest recent recordings. The late Giuseppe Sinopoli's renowned 1999 live recording with the Dresden Staatskapelle is bolder, and the late Gunter Wand's 1996 live recording with the Berlin Philharmonic is nobler, but Harnoncourt and the VPO (also recorded live) reveal a lush, elegant, even graceful Bruckner.

The 5th has been called the most classical of Bruckner's symphonies, the most perfectly symmetrical of his symphonic cathedrals, and Harnoncourt, with his deep experience in Bach and Mozart, inhabits its world easily. I agree with those reviewers who have noted Harnoncourt's tendency to focus on detail at the expense of the tempo and narrative drive and sweep (a shortcoming he shares with Gergiev), but that is not evident here. Harnoncourt does not radically reinterpret Bruckner in this magnificent 5th, but brings out a warm, burnished, elegant sound that is unique and deeply rewarding.

5 out of 5 stars First Rate In Every Respect.......2006-12-08

As one who was so fortunate to have been in the Musikverein when this performance was recorded, it's a true pleasure to have this superb performance...and on SACD at that. I'll never forget being there and even if you don't have an SACD player, you can still play this CD in any player, as it is a hybrid. The dynamic range is quite stunning and while it may be over the top for some, it certainly gives you the feeling that you are in the Musikverein's Grosse Saal, which some consider the best hall in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Personal expression triumphs.......2006-10-21

The Fifth is probably the least known of Bruckner's symphonies and certianly the hardest to hold together. Its sprawling structure too easily breaks down into disjointed segments, all the more when you consider how often he repeats the same material or uses the same devices. It's a rare conductor who can make the work sound completely coherent and convincing. Harnoncourt does so superbly. He approaches every section with his own expressive ideas, shifting tempos, massaging the phrase, and applying generous rubato. These personal touches heighten dramatic contrast, which would seem on the surface to be jsut the thing a disjointed symphony doesn't need.

But for works of high Romanticism like Bruckner's symphonies, strong personal expression is in fact authentic. By gripping us emotionally and keeping us on the edge of our seats, Harnoncort does what Bruckner wants. Add to this the magnificent Vienna Phil., the premiere Bruckner orchestra in the world, and you have a study in perfect style. RCA's hybrid SACD sounds very fine through a regular stereo system, but be aware that the dynamic range is huge, and it takes patience to accommodate music that whispers one moment and thunders the next.

In sum, this is a great addition to Harnoncourt's Bruckner discography, the most impressive since the era of Karajan.

.
Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.

DGG's sound is excellent.

This set is a remarkable document of art.

5 out of 5 stars An Eloquent Example of Sensitive Programming.......2005-05-18

Thomas Hampson has long been admired not only for the beauty of his richly pliant baritone voice, but also for the amount of research about composers and musicology he incorporates into his busy recital and opera life. This recording made in 1989 with the superb collaboration of pianist Geoffrey Parsons is an excellent example of what Hampson does best. He has selected the collection of German folk poetry 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn' assembled in 1896 - 1808 by Achim von Arnim and Clemens von Brentano which Goethe proclaimed the true essence of the German people, a legacy that would last forever, and found all of the musical settings to these poems. Indeed Goethe's prophecy proved correct in that many composers set these poems to music with varying degrees of celebrity.

Hampson has collected the renderings of this poems by composers Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms, von Weber, Loewe, Richard Strauss, Schoenberg, and of course the most popular settings by Gustav Mahler. The result is a fascinating insight into the way like poems are interpreted by different composers. There are many well-known episodes here but there are also intriguing discoveries of some very beautiful, seldom heard songs. Hampson and Parsons create an atmosphere of musicality and expressivity that is all too rare. That they are performed beautifully is a given!

This is the second release of this particular recital and before it, too, becomes history it is highly recommended for connoisseurs of thoughtful programs. Grady Harp, May 05

5 out of 5 stars A Little Gem.......2002-09-22

This is simply one of the best Lieder records available. It has everything, an excellent selection, a great baritone and a perfect piano partnership. Des Knaben Wunderhorn is a loose collection of text and songs from the German Folklore, which has been taken up by German composers. This collection goes through almost 150 year of German musical history, from Carl Maria von Weber to Richard Strauss. The tone tend to be sprightly, amusing, with the sad touch for balance. The original recording catches Thomas Hampson early in his extensive recording career, with still a fresh bloom in his voice that is perfect for the tunes. It goes to show you that baritones can be fun too. Mr. Parsons is always the perfect pianist for accompaniment. If you do not know what Lieder are, or thing they are boring and "passe", do yourself a favor and check this out.
