Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Well worth the price.......2006-04-13

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

Still the best..........2006-07-12

I first heard this song in 2000 in Florida at a dance club. I immediately went to the DJ booth to ask what song it was, and purchased the single the next day. To this day (I've listenened to it thousands of times since) it is still my favorite house song ever. It has the best guitar riff, and all around beat!

OMG!.......2005-11-16

Anyone familiar with the singer Moony knows that she is a force to be reckoned with. Her powerful vocals are always the defining moment to any track she sings for. Well I'm here to tell you that "He's All I Want" is no exception. I first heard this song on the first season of Queer as Folk and immediately fell in love with it. It's a dance track that incorporates amazing vocals, a haunting guitar piece (hear it once and try to forget it, I dare you) and all around good vibes. I highly recommend you buy it or you will have passed on something really great. I guarantee there is no other song like it.

Excellent ... but ..........2007-02-07

As a vintage G&S listener, I appreciated this collection but I think it would mostly appeal to the specialist-completeist. A newcomer to the genre would do well to get a full operetta DVD. (I prefer the OK BBC performances to the tarted up & modernised Australian ones.)

Old-comers probably already have all these tracks as part of their collection of vintage full operetta recordings.

But don't let my idiosynchratic views deter you if you really like G&S... but not to the extent of buying all the vintage full operetta versions.

Good bargain........2004-08-25

The performances are good--this is the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, after all--and you get 2 full CDs, with 2 selections from "Trial by Jury", 5 from "HMS Pinafore", 9 from "The Pirates of Penzance", 9 from "Iolanthe", 12 from "The Mikado", 6 from "The Yeomen of the Guard", and 13 from "The Gondoliers". The booklet is a bit skimpy, and only lists recording dates for the first CD (1929-1949). But the sound is good, and the music is great, and at this price it's a great "greatest hits" collection.

Simply beautiful!.......2007-06-23

Every year I am always hopeful to find a song that make the year, a song that gives you "that something" and I think that Angelmoon's "He's all I need" did it for me in 1999. It is a dance song but as I was listening to it for the first time it brought tears to my eyes. Is there such a thing as a romantic dance song? If there is this song gets it, I admit the verses will never will win a poem competition but you can feel her pain and passion with really simple lyrics.

And all of them are really good but for me the ones that appeal most to me my taste are mixes 1,2,5, and 6 but I am sure that the other two will appeal to others, and after almost 8 years it still sounds fresh and better than most danceable stuff that you hear on the radio.

I went on a hunt trip to every single CD store back then trying to find it (the next day after I heard it) and drove several nearby cities (most stores didn't even know about the song yet) but I was lucky to find it at a Peaches CD Store in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. since then it is a regular in my player. If you have never heard the song you may think that it is too much money for a single but I am pretty sure that if your taste go towards Pop you will simply LOVE this song.

MARK PICCHIOTTI HITS THE JACKPOT.......2000-08-15

First time I heard this beautiful track was about a year ago on a compilation. Although it never received a full release in the U.K., the beautiful haunting melody has remained with me ever since. Mark Pichiotti's mix is a song too beautiful and tear-inducing to even contemplate dancing to, despite the fact that it's a peaktime stormer that'll rip any dancefloor to shreds.

I heard this tune while I was living in the Orlando area this past winter. I was heartbroken when i couldn't buy this single anywhere. I would have paid $50 for this disc. It is like I can't live without hearing this song again. I am a trance producer and when I listen to music, i listen critcally. I make my living by having to know what is good and what sucks. This is definitely the coolest thing I have heard in years. Keep the hits coming, angelmoon!

Angelmoon- Glowin in the Miami Night Scene.......2000-05-15

Angelmoon's single, "He's all I Want" was the hottest dance track to hit the Miami scene February and is still blazin up in the clubs throughout the Mid-West U.S. A must have for all people who like dance music.

A Great Dance Tune.......2000-05-12

Angelmoon has a big hit on their hands if radio stations will play it, and there is a good chance of that with the recent successes of Eiffel 65 and Alice DeeJay. Lush vocals in the chorus and a strong vocal perfomance in the verses make this song a sure winner. Sampled guitar-like synths and a driving beat complete the equation for a great track. Worth checking out.
