4 out of 5 stars A Useful Introduction to the Ring.......2006-03-04

This CD was a pleasant surprise and can be recommended to anyone seeking a brief 1-CD introduction to Wagner's Ring, particularly at its bargain price. I hadn't expected much of it, since Haitink's complete Ring has received mostly unenthusiastic reviews, but it turns out be considerably better than I'd thought.

Let's back up a little and lay some groundwork: Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, his masterpiece, is a huge work consisting of four long operas. The best Ring on records is the Solti/Vienna Philharmonic version on Decca/London (14 CDs, recorded 1958-65), followed (not very closely, in my opinion) by the Bohm/Bayreuth version on Philips (14 CDs, recorded 1966-67). The Solti is a studio recording; the Bohm comes from live performances at Bayreuth. The Solti version has the best conducting, the best orchestra, the best cast, and the best sound. The reason these two versions are superior to any later versions is largely that the 1960s was the last decade when there were singers available who could cope with the staggering vocal demands of the Ring (in particular Birgit Nilsson, who sings Brunnhilde in both the Solti and Bohm versions). Today, alas, we lack such singers. Hence the Haitink Ring, recorded 1988-1991, has to make do with current vocal resources, which results in seriously compromised singing in some of the major parts. And the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra has never been considered an orchestra in the top echelon.

So what's to like about this recording? First, Haitink, a frequently underrated conductor, proves, at least on the basis of what we hear here, to be an excellent Wagnerian, and he has this orchestra sounding world-class. Second, the sound is excellent. (I've rarely admired EMI's digital sound, but here it is first-rate.) Third, given the impossibility of representing the entire Ring on a single CD, this collection of many (22) brief snippets is as good a Ring "sampler" (for that is all it can be) as could be put together in 72½ minutes. Finally, we are spared most of the problematic singing, and what we get is good enough. James Morris, the Wotan, is excellent; his big, powerful voice, secure and authoritative, is just what's needed for the part. Eva Marton, the Brunnhilde, comes across as too much of a screamer, but fortunately we don't hear much of her here. Siegfried Jerusalem, cast in the impossible part of Siegfried, has a basically pleasing voice and sings intelligently and lyrically; he can't cope with the heroic demands of the role (no one else can either, since Melchior) but offers a sensible compromise. Many of the smaller parts are well taken; in particular I would point out the genuinely thrilling Ride of the Valkyries (with a fine group of Valkyries)-an electrifying performance that should be an ear-opener for anyone used to the usual orchestra-only version of this excerpt. Everything I hear from Haitink and the orchestra on this CD gives pleasure and satisfaction. He may not be the fiery, dramatic dynamo Solti is, but he understands this music and has it and his orchestra well in hand.

In short, if you want only a single-CD introduction to the Ring, this is a good choice, especially at its bargain price. (And if you're already a Ring buff but would like to sample the Haitink cycle, this serves well.) I think better choices (at higher prices) are the well-filled 2-CD selections of Ring highlights from the Bohm/Bayreuth cycle on Philips and the Karajan/Berlin Philharmonic cycle on DG. They are not without their problems, too, but they give you twice as much of the music (two and a half hours) as this single-CD selection, and hence a better idea of the Ring. And there is also a 1-CD selection of highlights from the Solti/Vienna Philharmonic cycle, offering 7 longer, more or less "standard" excerpts, mostly orchestral, instead of the 22 shorter (but choppier) and more varied snippets of the Haitink CD (and at "medium" price instead of budget price).

2 out of 5 stars Asleep at the wheel.......2005-09-27

EMI took a big risk having Haitink conduct a complete Ring since he had never conducted Wagner in the opera house. He turned out to be disappointing all around, with no special insights and a tendency to underplay the most famous orchestral moments. We can mercifully skip over his adequate-to-dismal cast, as even this budget CD of excerpts barely manages to catch them in good form. Only the Barenboim set has worse singers, and that's debatable.

5 out of 5 stars Release the budget Ring NOW!.......2004-02-18

Practically every Ring set or an individual recording is full-priced in the market. The popular ones (Solti/VPO, Boulez/Bayereuth, Levine/Met) are priced at full 4-CD price and vintage recordings by Furtwangler and Knappertbusch are either hard to find, expensive, or simply difficult for newbie listeners to listen because of the mono sound . Well, I guess Haitink's original set seems to pale in comparison with these titles above, but based on the highlights, it sounds just decent. From the highlights, the singing is surprisingly top-notch. Haitink is the one expert on spaciousness of sound. I find the Bavarian Radio a better orchestra than his Concertgebouw for simply more weight in their playing. The Concertgebouw has clarity and spaciousness, but listening to the orchestra is like drinking Diet Coke with ice.

It would be great for EMI to do us a justice and release a full Haitink-Ring set.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Intoduction to the Ring Cycle.......2002-02-11

The perfomances on this CD of highlights from the Haitink,BRSO
recording of the "Ring" on EMI might seem to pale in comparision to the other ones. But I think that one advantage that they have is that they are not "overblown" or "Overdone" The Haitink pays homage to other recordings by having some "sound effects" like the Solti-Culshaw recording on Decca, the singers are all well cast, and do as good a job singing their parts as can be expected. I think it would be good of EMI to re-issue this Ring
recording on CD as a budget set It deserves to remain in the catalog and not be put in limbo. I also recommend the Mozart Magic Flute Hightlights CD also from Seraphim.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Ring I've heard in years.......2001-04-11

This is the worst recording of music from the Ring that I've heard in years. The singing is terrible, and the orchestral playing is boring and ugly. This is definitely the Ring to avoid. If you want some highlights, try a sampler of one of the more successful recordings of the Ring: Karajan, Solti, or Bohm. There are plenty of samplers out there from these recordings, any of which would be more musical and more exciting than this.

Try Karajan if you want beautiful and thrilling music, Solti if you want to test your car stereo, and Bohm if you like the excitement of a live recording. The latter two of these three are less in tune than the Karajan, but there is some thrilling singing on the Solti set - particularly the incredible Swedish soprano Birgit Nilsson.

3 out of 5 stars Good assortment........2000-12-31

You might enjoy this CD more than me, as there was a little too much chorus and solo singing. I prefer orchestra only.

As always, you may have heard more pleasing versions of individual pieces elsewhere. But, if you like collections, as I do, this is a fairly good choice.

Amazon.com essential recording

This entertaining disc offers all of Mozart's major overtures in performances that cover a wide range of interpretation, from the hyperprecise Szell to the warmth of Bruno Walter. The younger generation is represented by Thomas Schippers, and also by Antonia Brico, one of the first female conductors to make an international reputation for herself. The addition of an early divertimento conducted by Szell is an added attraction--he was peerless in this music--and you also get Philippe Entremont's Viennese version of Symphony No. 29. At budget price, this disc offers some essential Mozart in a way that really does highlight both his range as a composer and the variety of legitimate approaches to his music. A very well-put-together collection. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Echoes from another era.......2007-02-16

The other reviewers here haven't really caught on to the value of this CD, which appears to be a rag-bag on the surface. If you look deeper, you find that this is a memento of a great Mozartean era--Germany and Austria in the 30s. Szell, Walter, and Antonia Brico all conducted then and all fled the Nazis to come to America. Brico was subsequently forgotten until one of her piano students in Denver, who happened to be Judy Collins, brought her to notice with a documentary film. Brico, it turns out, was the first woman to conduct the Berlin Phil. (have there been any others?), which she did to great acclaim in the Furtwangler era.

Brico was allowed to conduct the Mostly Mozart Festival for a brief time (she had long been the head of the amateur Brico Sym. in Denver), and the two overtures here, from Don Giovanni and Die zauberflote, hark back to the Thirties style Brico grew up with--lyrical, measured, and with free phrasing. The same holds true for Walter's lovely Cosi fan tutte overture, but Szell came from the Toscanini side of the equation, and that style of Mozart is quick, alert, and precise. Szell shows it off beautifully in an impeccable Impressario Over. as well as the minor but charming Sym. #28.

Two items are out of place stylistically. Schippers' Marriage of Figaro Over. and the relatively obscure Divertimento K. 131, which is performed blandly but accurately under Entremont. But Schippers' contribution is nicely done, and thankfully not taken at a breathless Presto of the kind we hear all the time. In sum, the pieces from Szell, Brico, and Walter are treasurable, fully worthy of five stars.

4 out of 5 stars From magnificent to downright awful by same maestro.......2006-01-08

Sony has assembled a very strange Mozart CD here with overtures, one symphony and a rarely played divertomento with 4 horns. The divertomento is one of the most underrated works in the entire Mozart catalog. It is absolutely delightful, especially the two movements featuring the four horns. Szell and his great Cleveland Orchestra play this work to absolute perfection. Of course, there is no such thing as absolute perfection in musical performance, but this performance comes extremely close. On the other hand, Szell's performance of the Impressario Overture is plodding and dull, a rare, bad Mozart performance by the great conductor. The rest of the performances are all very fine, making this CD a must for any Mozart lover.

4 out of 5 stars K. 131 is worth twice the price of the CD.......2004-08-06

While I agree that all performances here are at least acceptable, I agree with some other reviewers that the Szell and Schippers performances are superlative. There are other wonderful performances of many of these works. For me it is the Divertimento, K. 131 that is the real "find" here. First of all, this is a very rarely-performed work, and is even more rarely recorded. I wore out at least two copies of the vinyl version of this performance, over probably 30 years of listening. This is both Mozart and Szell at their best--and the Cleveland soloists, including Myron Bloom at his prime, are simply spectacular. EVERY nuance is explored with cogent coherence and exquisite musicianship. This is a MUST HAVE for everyone who loves Mozart! I have rated it only a "4" because some of the performances just miss being "the best." Otherwise, if only for the K. 131, it would be a 5+.

4 out of 5 stars The Walter and Szell Are Best.......2002-02-28

I had hoped for more of the Bruno Walter-Columbia Symph. Orch. recordings. I had an old, beat up Masterworks "Odyssey" series LP of all of Walter's recordings of the overtures, Masonic Funeral music, and Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. I gladly took what little of those I could get on this CD and appreciate any Szell that comes my way. The Mostly Mozart items I found a bit disappointing, as I had remembered them sounding better in concerts over the years.

Now the Walter/CSO "Odyssey" LP has finally been re-issued on CD. It is the better buy, for sure - practically indispensible.

4 out of 5 stars Szell and Schippers are top-notch!.......2000-02-29

The CD as a whole is a bit of a mixed bag. Nothing is bad, but the performances by Brico, Entremont, and even Bruno Walter don't strike me as revelatory. But Thomas Schippers' "Marriage of Figaro" overture is wonderful: taut, powerful, and expressive. And the Szell performances are just miraculous: I'm a great admirer of Szell, but not all of his Mozart strikes me as essential. But these two off-the-beaten-path works by Mozart called forth something special in Szell and his remarkable orchestra. Szell's recording of the overture to "The Impresario" is my nominee for the single greatest performance of a Mozart overture, period. If I were a Penguin Guide reviewer, I'd be giving it a double rosette (with the caution that this is a personal mark of esteem, and, alas, it may not seem as miraculous to you--but then again, maybe it will). For me, as I told a friend, Szell's "Impresario" is "the perfect fusion of precision and poetry." I first discovered this performance as a 14-year-old on the old Columbia "Spectacular Cleveland Orchestra" LP set, and it riveted me then. The Divertimento is also an extraordinary performance: this performance smiles more than any Szell Mozart recording that I know, and when you combine Szell's affection, finesse, and sheer style with the Cleveland Orchestra at its unapproachable height, you've got something well worth double the asking price, even if the other recordings don't match Szell and Schippers.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Too beautiful for words.......2004-05-25

If Julian Bream's recordings were letters, his would all be hand written rather than typed.

      5 out of 5 stars Guitar History.......2004-02-15

Julian Bream not only plays the guitar, and the lute
(although purists and I suspect Bream himself would say rather unconventionally), but most of all, Bream plays MUSIC. This is very, very important. There are many fine guitarists around today, but I doubt any could match Bream's sheer musicality when these recordings were made.
This 28 CD box set is a lesson in music making, regardless of what instrument is being played. The recordings are the complete RCA Bream catalogue from 1959 to 1989. If you can find the complete box set or even any of the individual volumes, I suggest you make the purchase. (Shame on RCA and BMG for not keeping this box set and "all" the individual volumes in print.)
Some of the higlights of Breams remarkable talent are his
interpretations of Britten's "Nocturnal", Walton's "Five Bagatelles", the instrumental and vocal works (with tenor Peter Pears) of Dowland, the "first" complete guitar works of Villa-Lobos, a thorough history of the guitar in Spain from the Renaissance to the Present on period instruments, plus all the works that have become classical guitar standards by Bach, Sor, Giuliani, Albeniz, Rodrigo, plus the "new" standards by Brouwer, Arnold, Berkeley, Britten, Walton, etc.
Music making of this caliber is rare indeed. Buy it if you can find it. Good Luck !

5 out of 5 stars Best deal there is!.......2002-05-06

If you can find this set buy it fast. There are not to many of these left out there. This has it all. Plus Julian Bream is the greatest guitarist of all time.

      5 out of 5 stars Most excellent.......2001-08-18

This a an wonderful collection of Julian Bream. He is the master of master . I always admire his talent as a genius of this centure.

5 out of 5 stars Julian Bream, The Genius.......1999-01-09

Who don't want to have a wonderful classical guitar collection? Well, this pack consists in 28 CDs, more than 1.000 minutes of music, distribuited by different titles as Baroque Guitar, Spanish Guitar, etc. Some highlights are here, like Asturias, Fernando Sor variations on Mozart's Magic Flute, Paganini Grand Sonata, all Preludes and Etudes of Villa-Lobos, and, well, lots of really good things. Also, there are some cds Julian Bream plays Guitar with Orchestra, or with Harpsichords. Ah, he plays lute in some too. Unfortunately, there are 2 or 3 cds where a tenor sings and another which a woman says some poems, and those, in my opinion, are not very nice. So, it's a good collection, and if you can, buy it!!
