Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars "Farewell", "Ruska", and "Bittersweet" are excellent songs.......2007-01-05

A good number of the songs on this album are a touch "heavy metal" but there are enough songs that I really like to make this a good album. There is a bonus track with Eicca singing in German. I could be wrong, but she doesn't sing in English on this album. Maybe she doesn't feel comfortable singing in the English, but the two gentlemen on the album do a good job on the tracks with lyrics. "Farewell" is an emotional piece that I quite enjoyed.

5 out of 5 stars Apocalytpica rocks.......2006-01-12

This CD is one of the best from Apocalyptica. Best songs (besides "The Path") on this CD. "Bittersweet" is the best one, it has Ville Valo (HIM, NOT The Rasmus) as vocals, accompanied by Laurie (The Rasmus). YOU NEED TO OWN THIS!

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent once again.......2005-10-21

Once again Apocalyptica proved to be influencial and staggering with their new album. For those of you who are not familiar with Apocalyptica and their music, I recommend you to listen to their former albums in order to appreciate and fully understand the groups's progress. For a quick info you can listen to tracks such as "Master of Puppets", "M.B.", "Inquisition Sypmhony", "Path", "Toreador" and "Prologue[Apprehension]".

Well, from the day they started off with "Plays Metallica by Four Cellos" Apocalyptica have immensely matured and diversified their sound span. Today, their new self-titled album "Apocalyptica" stands at the peak of their maturing. Diversity blended with drums continue to flourish throughout this album. Tracks such as "Fisheye", "Fatal Error" and ofcourse "Betrayal/Forgiveness", which is featuring Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, are the most aggressive and thrilling tracks on the album. While listening to "Fisheye" or "Betrayal/Forgiveness" you can find yourself accompanying the drums and totally blown out. By the way should I mention the unbelievable cello playing skills that will give you shivers?

On the other hand tracks like "Farewell", "Ruska" and "Deathzone" are more classical tuned and evenly beatiful like the rest of the album. I should recommend "Farewell" to everybody, this song conveys all feelings so poised and brilliantly that it can make you cry easily at the end of a though day.

Remaining tracks; "Life Burns!", "Quutamo", "Distraction", "Bittersweet", "Misconstruction" are all moving and should appeal to everyone who likes metal or classical music.

Eventually in this album Apocalyptica took one step forward in terms of sound and recording quality. Fact that they took charge in recording of the album shows us that they are also talented in production as well. This album, standing as the darkest but the most moving Apocalyptica ever made, is a must listen and should thrill everyone who wants to savor quality, adept music.

5 out of 5 stars If only Cello could feed your hunger..........2005-10-06

This is the first album of Apocalyptica that i own. It is very satisfying! and like i said...if only Cello could feed your hunger...this one will definetely will!
The first single from this album is called 'Bittersweet', which is so damn good!!! Not only the sounds of the Cello will move you, but also the duet vocals of, featuring Ville Vallo (the lead singer of The Rasmus of Finland), and the Laurie guy (i forgot his anme..sorry), sounds AMAZING.Note that if you like Til Lindemann of Rammstein's vocal, then you'll love Laurie's too!! The Rasmus dude really sings his heart out....which is why the song is so pure with feelings..and i am telling you the feeling is heavy and for sure this song will stick to your head!**Watch the video clip too because it's beautiful!**
'Ruska' is so freakin' amazing!! The song is not Metal like any other songs in the album, it is more towards instrumental with no Heavy Metal sounds to it. But it doesn't made this song bad at all! The Cello and background beat is simply great! Same goes to "Deathzone", but it's more Metal like this time..
Want real heavy metal clashed with classical?? You have got to listen to 'Quutamo'.... OMG,it's full of attitude and so damn GOOD!!!One of my favourites,of course!
But you cant miss the non-instrumental version of 'Quutamo'.. I have no idea who sang it, but all i can tell you is that the vocalist is a female and she sangs in French if i am not mistaken.. Ok, so maybe i am wrong..maybe it's finnish *but i still think it's french*, who cares..all im saying is that you should listen to that particular song! If that dont appear on your song list on the album, then switch to the last song of the album, Deathzone *right?!*, and wait for the 6th minute and 30 seconds of that song.. I know it's already ended, but wait for it...and that version of 'Quutamo',ladies and gentleman, will play! Trust me!
Anyway, this album is not only for Heavy metal/rock lovers..but also for those with Classical ears!

5 out of 5 stars Oh wow!.......2005-08-20

Well, i LOVE this group. Even though i only own this cd i've heard others and thats what i think... OH WOW. Im a musician (classical) and hearing this its like rock has always been a part in an instrument as classical as the Cello... If you havent heard of them before this is a cd that represents what they are...... i've just heard they are coming to my country (venezuela) in just 2 months..... i cant miss it!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind........2006-09-11

Apocalyptica is three guys (used to be four) who play metal on cello. Best known for covering famous songs by renowned artists (they first startled the music scene in 1996 with "Plays Metallica by Four Cellos"), they also write some magnificent pieces of their own, frequently featuring the collaboration of other bands such as HIM. Talented musicians, they're all classically trained, but they put that skill to use in a unique way.

Their music is beautiful. On a piece like Metallica's "One," the strings dance through the intro in almost baroque fashion, only to plunge into a startling imitation of a guitar's grind, and then cut loose into the meat of the piece with a snarl you've probably never heard from a cello before. Maximizing the cello's rich tonal range from a deep bass growl to a soprano that soars into the upper atmosphere, the instruments lend power ballads a heart-rendingly beautiful sound, while they crash through the hard stuff with a vicious exuberance that'd make any metal band proud.

If you enjoy metal, if you admire the lyricism of a well-played string instrument, if you like discovering novel sounds, or if you're simply tired of hearing rehashes of the same old stuff over and over again, you owe it to yourself to check out Apocalyptica. This collection is an excellent place to start, with some of the highlights from all their albums up to this point. Dark, ferocious, beautiful, and ageless, every person I've played this album for has turned to me with a look of joyful surprise and asked where they could find a copy.

    5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-02-15

Love this album. Heard of it in France where she has a huge success right now. Fresh voice and smooth soul/jazzy/afro melodies change from the commercial music we are surrounded with. "Down on my knees" and "Life is real" are the one I prefer but everything is great.

3 out of 5 stars It was okay!.......2006-12-15

I was little disappointed with some of the songs, haven't listened to it very much, but her music is unique.

5 out of 5 stars Honey moon song :-).......2006-08-07

This is my first review on Amazon.com :-) I have heard song "Down on my knees" on my honey moon in France and it just won't get out of my head. When we got home, I got on Internet and started to search wondering who is this artist... After few mouse clicks, I discovered "Ayo - Joyful"! Great music, great rhythm, great voice! And just few minutes ago, I got her whole album and am still repeating this song, although I liked the others too (after one listening). This will be in my player for days, I'm sure :-)

4 out of 5 stars She is ready to take off !.......2007-03-07

Joy Denalane hails from South Africa, has a German dad and arrives on the 2007 Soul Scene as one of the best kept secrets of the last 5 years or so.
Back in 2002 she released her first set "Mamani". That album, released in Germany, was a multilingual affair, whilst this album positions her very much in the contemporary R & B field.
Joy has an almost child-like delivery vocally and the Alicia Keys influences really come to the fore on the likes of "One In A Million".
"7 Year Itch" is a lovely old skool style Soul ballad. Very Seventies sounding. Other highlights are the lilting ballad duet with Governor "Something Stirrin Up" and "Change" a great up-tempo nu soul track that not even Lupe Fiasco's spoken rap can deflect from.
"Sometimes Love" is another nice ballad, "Start Over" a great dancer, and the title track a highly melodic mid tempo offering.
She even gets political on her personal take regarding the developments in "Soweto 1976 - 2006".
It's a very satifying album that will appeal to both new and old school soul fans from great new vocalist who sounds a little bit like Angie Stone and Mary j Blige.
The album was recorded in Philadelphia with full instrumentation, strings and horns arranged by Larry Gold.
Not since Mary J Blige has a female R&B artist sung with such conviction. Intelligent lyrics, a stunning voice, and collaborations with Lupe Fiasco and Raekwon make this debut in US a must.
Great album that will probably be amongst the top albums of 2007.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Very good but.......2007-01-24

I don't really see the point of taking a previous CD, remove one track, and add 6 more. Why? Of course it's good, but i don't really see the point.

5 out of 5 stars Compilation based on Starting over.......2003-03-29

Reba's Starting over collection of cover version, released in the mid-nineties, made little impact in the UK. It was repackaged with one track removed and six others added to form this compilation.

The nine tracks from Starting over included here are By the time I get to Phoenix (Glen Campbell), On my own (Patti Labelle) featuring Martina McBride, Trisha Yearwood and Linda Davis, You're no good (a song that originally became a minor American hit for Betty Everett, but later became a huge British hit for the Swinging blue jeans and a seventies chart-topper in America for Linda Ronstadt), Starting over again (Dolly Parton), Please come to Boston (Dave Loggins), Ring on her finger time on her hands (Lee Greenwood), I won't mention it again (Ray Price), Five hundred miles away from home (Bobby Bare) and Talking in your sleep (Crystal Gayle).

Two tracks from her more recent So good together - We're so good together and I'll be - plus one from one of her eighties albums - New fool at an old game - are also included.

Long-standing Reba fans may already have all the above tracks, but there are three other tracks, including two original songs, What if and What do you say, plus a stunning cover of If I fell, the first Beatles song that Reba has ever covered.

Given that most of the songs are covers, it might have been ever better to compile this album entirely from covers - I would have included Reba's versions of Cathy's clown (Everly brothers), Respect (Aretha Franklin) and You keep me hanging on (Supremes) - the only track missing from Starting over - but this is still a fine collection.

Reba fans who haven't got round to buying Starting over should consider buying this instead. It is difficult to justify buying both. I didn't buy Starting over when it first came out, so it was easy to choose this.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, but Good Collection.......2002-01-11

This is an interesting Import by Reba McEntire, titled ILL BE. It features 9 songs from her 1995 album STARTING OVER, which was sorely frowned upon, as its a great collection of cover songs, yes they were less country but it was a nice way to celebrate her 20 years in the industry, it is badly underrated. From her past album, SO GOOD TOGETHER, are the top 10 hits "I'll Be" and the touching ballad "What Do You Say", which is one of her better songs from the late 90's. As well included is the song "So Good Together". Overall its an interesting collection of songs from here and there, consisting mostly of her STARTING OVER days, but also a stirring rendition of the Beatles song "If I Fell", which is worth the price of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Why Not Me?.......2001-06-15

This collections is such a stunning example of Reba's range that you must own it! But why wasn't it released in the US??? Great vocals on great covers. The perfect match.

Just an OK album, nicely played by musicians who are capable to deliver a good album, just a good album, but say this is a masterpiece, well...It's too much, and exaggerated.

5 out of 5 stars densely orchestrated, beautifully layered Italian prog.......2006-04-03

This album has to stand, along with Banco del Mutuo Soccorso's "Io Sono Nato Libero" as some of the finest European progressive music that I have ever heard. If ever a piece of music defined the term craftsmanship, either through intricate technical brilliance, detailed melodic invention, or the finest points of communication through the nuance and gradation of tone and color, then this must represent these terms to the fullest expression of any piece of progressive music that I have ever heard. Delivering surprising changes of time and direction which seem natural and eloquent; expressive and rapturous vocals, multitudes of melodic tones and shades expressed with counterpoint and beautiful balance; performed with the highest degree of technical accomplishment and precision on traditional rock instrumentation, this album is an emotionally joyous artistic experience. With dual keyboards, as well as synthesizer, moog, guitar, woodwinds, various percussion delivered with breathtaking and brisk intensity; this album is an education in music making. I may have to go on record to say that the Italian progressive music in the 1970's has some of rock music's most daring accomplishments. This album is surely not to be missed. One of my alltime favorites.

      2 out of 5 stars Overrated.......2004-09-10

I think this album is just the most overrated of Italian Prog Rock. The melodies are awfully obvious and wxaggeratedly sweet. This is not progressive rock in the word's correct meaning, it's regressive, self-referential music. I think if most people say this is the best It-Prog album, they don't really know what good Italian Progressive is.

5 out of 5 stars Symph prog at its best !!!.......2003-12-07

I agree this is a masterpiece. Both the music and the voices are briliant. The music is complex but has also melodic sides, and this album can easily be compared to the earlier english prog masterpieces such as 'close to the edge' or ' the lamb lies down on broadway'. It's a shame that the CD version features two tracks that have nothing in common with the rest of the album. But, overall, I recommend this CD to all fans of symph prog.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, no weak points!.......2003-11-24

I rarely give albums 5 stars (see my other reviews), but this one is special. No weak points at all, excellent music and production.
So, you really can call this album "masterpiece". It is better, then a number of well-known prog-rock albums and realkly deserve your attention!

The title tune that kicks off Chely Wright's fourth album is a typically overwrought country-pop love pledge, but on other tunes Wright cuts masterfully to love's twisted chase with anguished musical vignettes of romantic ambiguity. Women who aren't loved enough ("Jezebel," "Deep Down Low"), women who are loved too much ("Not As in Love"), women who've lost their men ("Her"), and women who want their men to get lost ("While I Was Waiting") are all topics of the day. Yet Wright brings similar emotional authority to a pair of songs--"One Night in Las Vegas" and "For the Long Run"--that celebrate the quiet, hard-fought intimacy of long-term commitment. To describe Wright, who wrote or cowrote 5 of these 12 cuts, as a country diva with a graduate degree in marital counseling is a compliment. For the most part, she delivers these plaints of romantic anguish and (occasional) serenity with conviction and understated grace. --Bob Allen

      2 out of 5 stars Okay.......2007-05-01

Not great...not good...about fair (that's gotta be the right word). Her voice sounds too harsh...hell, has she been smoking (or hell, maybe she will be later when she gets there). I hope she realizes that most country fans are religious and that some of her songs are a little offensive. Well, Miranda Lambert holds the title for worst song writer. Ooookay, I guess I've said enough already (guess I should quit while I'm ahead).

4 out of 5 stars Never Love You Enough.......2007-02-14

This is a pleasant CD overall. "For the Long Run" is my favorite song. It Surprises me that she is not a bigger star, because she has a lovely voice with character and depth that some of the more pop country singers lack.

2 out of 5 stars Love her to death, but this is not anywhere near what she can do........2006-06-27

the album - which was her follow up to the (someday will be thought of as a classic album) "Single White female." is not anywhere close as what she could be capable of. and i can prove it too. i reccomend "The Metroplitan Hotel" it is magnificant and on of my favorite albums of the year. i found this album not very good at all. and the songs i did like are on her "20th Century Masters" album.
i feel with this album she sold out. she made this album either to capture the same success she got with SWF or she catered to the country music industry by letting her try to cement herself as a rival to Shania Twain. (Which i always felt they were trying to do.) the album sounded too phony, the music itself was by most part mechanical and i did not feel she was trying to get me to believe in her.i got the feeling she was trying to just be sexy in her presentations both physically and metaphorically - and she dosen't need to do that. she already is without trying to force it on me. and that is the feeling i got - i feel this album was too commercial anyway like she and her label needed the quick buck.
if you want to get it to hear her try to compete with Shania Twain or you want to look at her pictures within the case, then this album is for you. but i don't think this is near her best effort. she said nothing new to me and everything she did say sound like Shania should be saying it. it sound phony and cartoonish and very commercial. like i said there are thing i do like about it. but i can get just thoes thing from her Masters album.
she a much better talent than this album makes her out to be.

      5 out of 5 stars Like It.......2006-06-19

I don't really know how to write this review, because all of Chely Wright album is very good. And as i wrote on other rewiews of Chely's albums she's an amazing songwriter especially her ballades which is very special, especially to me. I don't know why, but it sais something.
Anyway ths is another very good album by Chely Wright.

5 out of 5 stars Great follow-up to Single white female.......2005-05-12

Following the success of Single white female, it seemed that Chely had finally made the big time. This album could have confirmed her arrival but, for whatever reason, it didn't. The singles didn't do as well as expected so the record label lost interest in Chely. It's a pity because this is a fine album full of great songs, but at least it didn't mark the end of Chely's career - she eventually started recording again.

This is, essentially, an upbeat album, which includes a mix of happy songs with other songs that look on the bright side of various situations. The title track seems at first to be a happy song but closer study shows that it is about a woman who loves a man more than the man loves her - even so, the woman is sticking to her man The second song, Jezebel, has echoes of Loretta Lynn - it is about a woman trying to keep her man from a rival. Compared to Loretta's songs such as Fist city and You ain't woman enough, Chely's song may seem restrained but the determination is the same.

My favorite song here, One night in Las Vegas, is about a couple who have their difficulties but the good times make the struggles worthwhile. So the album continues with one great song after another, all of which Chely sings superbly. The music may be a little too contemporary for some but Chey's voice is always the most important element - the music never gets in the way of her wonderful voice.

This album may not be quite as good - or as successful - as Single white female, but that classic album was always going to be difficult to follow. This is a brilliant album in its own right. If you enjoy any of Chely's other albums, you will surely love this too.

4 out of 5 stars Some of the best minimalistic music ever written, not a great production though.......2006-01-29

Wim Mertens is my favourite minimalist along with Philip Glass. This soundtrack has it all. Great themes - probably the most memorable themes of any other soundtrack and intense atmospheric playing. The production of this CD though is very 'minimal', more so than any CD you'll ever buy for $20. I can not think of any other CD of that price range lacking all the essentials. A pitty.... 5+ * for the music, 1 - * for the package.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best piano compositions.......2001-11-16

I have not seen the Peter Greenways'film.. and maybe
I won't do that.. I am afraid to get dissapointed because
for me this CD reflects so much creativity and passion.
Three tracks are for me some of the best piano compositions ever:

      1.Struggle for plaeasure
      the piano, like Life,
      begins slowly, softly,
      marking the rhythm gently
      then it becomes
sharp needles spining and falling from the sky
      The wind instruments
are the vital fast breathing to survive Life

      2. 4 mains

      the piano marchs
      the piano spins
      the piano climbs
      the piano falls

      3. Close cover
If I have to choose the soundtrack for my life
      it would be this piece

      5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2001-09-18

If you like nice orchestral music, often stirring emotions of love and heartbreak, but still uplifting, go buy this album. It's that easy. I first heard a song from Wim on a Cafe Del Mar album and had to buy his entire album. It was obviously worth it and I think you'll agree when you listen to it. So go buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A superb introduction to the minimalism of Branca & Mertens.......2001-06-24

This soundtrack for the Peter Greenaway film of the same name almost steals the film with it's careening, cyclical piano pieces perfectly matching architect Stourley Cracklite's world slowly collapsing amidst the Roman ruins of contemporary Rome. The soundtrack to the film is one of the few by Peter Greenaway that does not feature his usual partner in crime Michael Nyman. The soundtrack was initially developed by New York based minimalist composer Glenn Branca, but was largely rejected by Greenaway. An earlier release of this soundtrack did feature a few dramatic Brancian orchestral swells, but unfortunately this release (given the track listing) seems to have left these pieces off, which is a shame.

This release features the brilliant work of Belgian minimalist piano composer Wim Mertens, and is utterly stunning in it's emotional intensity, power and beauty, with cyclical piano motifs spinning the listener around in an intense but gorgeous emotional journey. Some of the work covered on this soundtrack can be found on Mertens' career highlight release 'Close Cover' (sadly out of print at the time of this writing). Those interested in work by Glenn Branca should also look to explore his early 80's orchestrated guitar recordings (some of which are not for the fainthearted), as well as 1992's sublime 'The World Upside Down'.

This is one of the best soundtrack recordings I have ever heard, and still sends chills through me almost ten years after seeing the film. It also represents an excellent introduction to the works of two very under-rated yet important modern composers.

5 out of 5 stars Love the life.......2001-01-12

I'm sorry for my english, I'm spanish. I only want to say that Wim Vertens changed my life. Please , why this person is not a famous compositor? I am not an old person that hate pop music. I'm 22 and a electronic music composer in Spain, I talk about Wim Vertens discography not only this cd. His music go inside my mind and the time stop, When I finish I don't know where I am, who I am, I only know that my life has one way, be happy. Five stars for this person that love the life.
