A little underground treasure.......2004-03-26

Had Mr. Paglia lived in the Sixties or early 70s, been American and well 'connected' in the record industry, this record would have been a classic. There are fantastic funk grooves in it (check out the song "Arturo's Birthday Party"!) and amazing Hammond playing all over the album... This record definitely deserves his rank alongside my favorite Jimmy Smith, Lonnie Smith or James Taylor Quartet funk albums!
However, the album not only features funky Hammond grooves, but also bossa-nova, humorous italian 'lounge music' and McCartney-George Martin-style string arrangements, making it a very varied, even 'eclectic' LP. I am not particularly fond of the vocals in a few tracks of the album nor of some string parts, but it is only a minor drawback.
I strongly recommend this barely-known album, especially if you like the Funk or want to impress your guests with a stylish 60s party!

My best pick for ages.......2000-12-27

I bought this CD without knowing anything about the artist. Still, I fell in love with the music the first time I heard it. It's so joyful and happy that it makes you smile every time you play it. It's almost impossible to categorize the content, I think the best description is what I read on the sticker on the CD's cover: Cocktail music - good for your heart. Very true indeed.

Delightful and humorous music for lounge lizards.......2000-06-19

I picked up this album without knowing anything about it - what a treat it turned out to be. Sam Paglia is hard to catagorize, his music is a sort of acid-easy-listening-bossanova-jazz with kudos to Mancini, Jimmy Smith and numerous italian lounge entertainers. Ranging from upbeat samba and bossanova numbers to soulful ballads and grinding 70's organ tracks, "Night Club Tropez" is a soundtrack to any self-respecting martini lover's (night)life. Paglia's organ is played with energy and inventiveness, each track offers new sounds, rhythms and expressions. Also a decent cartoonist, Paglia's cover art is worth the money by itself! Highly recommended! :-)
