Best compilation album this year!.......2007-07-11
These dudes gonna be a problem. Every song on here bump. Ol' boy Foxx gon' be a star, mark my words. Webbie and Boosie stars in their own right but that young dude got a helluva mic presence too. And Mouse on the tracks... shyyyyt! Louisiana is back. They got that NL bounce on here. I luv it. Wipe Me Down is the biggest song in the country. It ain't a party unless the DJ drop that joint. I sure as hell ain't have a good time if I ain't get wiped down at least twice up in tha club! Lol! Trill Ent in 07!
Wipe Me Down is an appropriate name for the first single -.......2007-05-23
- because after a week, this album maybe best served as a coaster.
Trill Entertainment was a label started by UGK's Pimp C. As one-half of one of the greatest hip-hop groups of all time, one would think that the Pimp would have a better ear for talent; I guess one can't be blessed in every aspect of life, and talent scouting is not one of the Pimp's better aspects. Most of the emcees signed to the label are either mind-numbingly mediocre or the definition of wack.
3 Deep would be the most appropriate for the latter title, because both tracks this 'talent' appears on have no redeeming qualities. I believe 3 Deep is a group based on their name, but if they are, I can't distinguish one member from the next; there is absolutely no difference in cadence, flow, or tone if there really is more than one artist appearing on these tracks. In fact, Watch My Shoes is possibly the most asinine boast I've ever heard in hip-hop; the production, which sounds like hyphy meets snap, is equally grating. Do It Stick It is a bit better on the production tip, but nothing will stay in your head after listening to it, even the hook.
On the other end of the spectrum, while still painfully average, both Boosie and Webbie are slowly, but gradually improving. Boosie's voice is abit more tolerable on this release, most likely thanks to how little of it we have to hear compared to Bad Azz; Webbie is slowly becoming an enjoyable emcee. While Webbie gets no solo tracks on this album, he manages to outshine most of his Fam, although Boosie does tend to hold his own when it comes to this type of thing; Boosie's solo track, Thug Me Like That, is actually quite decent too.
Foxx maybe the best rapper in the entire Trill Fam; not a huge claim, but a claim, nonetheless. He's got an intoxicating flow, and decent enough lyrics; he sounds a bit more seasoned than the majority of his compadres, whether he really is or not. Wipe Me Down, one of the better tracks on the album, shows that the young emcee has talent. Big Head is also a rapper with a lot of potential; while he doesn't show it on a lot of the collaborations, his solo track, Politician Networkin', in another one of the hotter tracks on the album, and this time for more than just the beat; Head actually provides some nice bars.
Soulja Boy, Lil Phat, and Shell all appear on Materialistic *****, and that track just sucks. That's all there is to really say about it. Seeing as this is the only cut any of those three find themselves on in this album, it's dumbfounding how it made the final cut; it's probably the worst track on the album next to Watch My Shoes.
The majority of this album is dominated by the three biggest acts on the label, Webbie, Boosie, and the upcoming Foxx; Big Head also gets his fair share of appearances. None of these guys can be considered dope emcees, at least not at this point in their careers, but they're all competenent enough. The beats are pretty hot on most tracks, and simply stupid when they tend to fail. With that being said, I guess it's worth checking out as a presentation of what Trill has to offer; at the same time, don't expect much if it doesn't have Pimp or Bun's name on it, and I can't guarantee this will have any lasting value at all.

Perfect.......2005-02-15
I love classical music but I dont own very much of it, so I thought I would start my collection with Masters of the Bow. What a beautiful selection it was. I just love the sound of a Violin, Joshua Bell is my favorite,I would love to hear more from him. This collection really helps you get to know the masters. Lovely Lovely!
Outstanding.......2004-08-17
I love the violin and this collection is one of my favorites. A great choice for someone like me who doesn't know enough about music and never knows what to buy. It has introduced me to some artists and pieces that I knew nothing about and will help me know what to look for in violin music in the future. This is my favorite but I would also recommend The Cello and Voice CDs in the "Masters of" series. I can't wait for more in this series.

We've grown so accustomed to seeing violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter gracing album covers in her flowing formal gowns that this recording of Vivaldi's masterpiece may come as a shock to her fans, at least at first glance. Mutter, it appears, has been influenced by Gap culture, looking relaxed and appearing in jeans on the album cover. To coincide with this release, she even released a music video, featuring the Trondheim Soloists and herself performing the glorious work and looking like they're having a blast. Is this the shape of classical music to come? Let's hope so. Mutter's performance here, as usual, is top-notch. The opening movements of Spring sound delightful, the Summer storm sounds frenzied, and during Winter's second movement, you can practically hear the chill being warded off by a fire. Her impeccable tone is, as usual, gorgeous and the conductorless Trondheims provide a fine, if slightly obscured, accompaniment. Filling out this disc is Tartini's Sonata in G Minor (better known as The Devil's Trill), a wonderful piece of baroque violin virtuosity. There have never been so many recordings of Four Seasons available as right now; there really is no definitive version anymore. This one, however, is easy to recommend. --Jason Verlinde

Exciting Highlights Dampened by Weak Support.......2007-03-08
It's easy to get used to listening to near-perfect recordings and performances of The Four Seasons. With so many recordings available, you can have your pick of styles.
I remember confidently ordering tickets for a local group's performance of The Four Seasons in Salzburg one summer. How could I go wrong? The performance started off in fine fashion. The soloist was huge, confident, and energetic. The rest of the group was solid and enthusiastic. But after about 12 minutes, the soloist began to come apart at the seams. He couldn't complete the difficult sections in Summer. The group would restart and restart. I was fascinated.
I had almost forgotten that experience when I first listened to this recording. Such violin soloist flubs are unknown in the mature Anne-Sophie Mutter's recordings. But I was astonished to find that her supporting cast of Trondheim Soloists (led by Bjarne Fiskum and including soloists Byvind Gimse, and Knut Johannesen) was apparently playing a different piece, and not very well. Ms. Mutter is also credited as conductor. I suspect that she should have scheduled many more practices.
The recording also has moments when another take would have been in order.
But I learned something valuable from listening to Ms. Mutter soar about the muddled noise: It matters who else is playing with you for The Four Seasons.
If you are an Anne-Sophie Mutter fan (as I am), you'll undoubtedly want to listen to this CD. But I think you'll be more pleased if you limit yourself to the first allegro from Spring from The Four Seasons for 3 minutes and 36 seconds during which the Trondheim Soloists perform okay in the Simply Anne-Sophie CD. Good editing choice there.
I graded Anne-Sophie's playing as a five, the recording quality as a four, and the Trondheim Soloists as a 1.
Not For The Purist, But I Think This Is The Best Recording of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons".......2007-01-25
Only a die-in-the-wool traditionalist will dislike this fine Deutsche Grammophon recording of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons", which I regard as the best recording of it that I've heard, surpassing classic ones from the likes of I Musici. Indeed, the venerable Penguin Guide to Classical Music not only has given it its highest starred rating, but has noted succinctly that this recording is among the best available. And it's no wonder, considering the superb playing from the great German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Trondheim Soloists, especially from harpsichord player Knut Johannesen, whose own splendid musicianship ranks favorably with, for example, Trevor Pinnock. I was quite impressed that musically, this relatively unknown Norweigan chamber music ensemble could offer a performance as memorable as any from the English Consort and I Musici, but to their everlasting credit, they have done so in this rather fresh, quite vivid interpretation of Vivaldi's most popular works for harpsichord and strings. As for Mutter, she shows substantial dynamic range in her own virtuoso playing, offering, for example, in "L'Inverno" (Winter), a truly impassioned, yet icy, performance. Unlike the Penguin Guide, I was equally impressed with Mutter's playing and the Trondheim Soloists's interpretation of Tartinai's "Devil's Trill" Sonata in G minor. Without question, this fine recording remains among Mutter's best, and one which I look forward to hearing frequently for years to come.
The best 4 seasons out there........2006-12-23
The title says it all. This is the cd to compare to all other performances of this work. Very similar to Karajan's interpretation. So if you like his then you'll love this.
Mutter is at her best and pulls off the visual images in her playing better than any other I've heard. You can feel the summer storm and the chill of the winter concerto. the Trondheim Soloist keep pace and drive the performance in a grand way.
One of my favorites.
Nasaly and scraping tones, and a bored performer.......2006-06-17
Given the number of 5 star reviews here, it's clear that the majority of these people haven't heard the recording by Hugh Bean and Stokowski. Once you do, nothing else will do, unless you are a period performance fan. This cd has the most ridiculous packaging I've seen. All to promote the sexy, come hither looks of Mutter. One would hope for a remotely sexy performance, but it's not to be. I'm literally shocked at the poor intonation and the scraping noises of her violin (especially on Winter, track number 10), it makes my teeth grind. One wonders what the rest of the musicians were thinking when they recorded this. Did they think the scraping sounds were good? The Trondheim Soloists sounds like a second rate group, one that obviously needs more cohesiveness to make their group sound better. They sound under rehearsed and they struggle to keep up with Mutter's pace. Then there's Mutter the conductor. Sure her performance with Karajan was a mess, and he knows how to conduct. So here we have Mutter thinking she can do it better. This is a better performance, but it's still a terrible one. Avoid this and get the one by Stokowski and Hugh Bean.

Amazon.com essential recording
Anne-SophieMutter obviously had fun making this disc. In the quiet pieces (Massenet, Ysaÿe, Fauré) which serve as interludes, she plays with her usual exquisite taste. In the showpieces, though, she goes to town, sliding, scooping, exaggerating, and letting all the stops out. The gypsy inflection she uses in Ravel's Tzigane and Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen is delicious. Even a ridiculous orchestral arrangement of Tartini's Devil's Trill Sonata is more amusing than offensive. With James Levine and the Berlin Philharmonic providing uncommonly alert and powerful support, and Deutsche Grammophon's realistic sound, this disc is a real treat for violin lovers. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Best I've heard so far.......2005-05-03
Many musicians play with with brains, only few do with hearts - And even fewer pour their hearts out with consistency are legends. Mutter had seemingly rewritten the arrangement and absorbed it so solidly which led to a performance that blooms with such great passion and distinct personality aided by her transcendental techniques. I had felt an instant connection with her the very first time I heard it. It's also sonically pleasing even to the audiophiles. It's a recording for music fans who truely understand and appreciate music on a very sophisticated level...
Buy this, you'll love it!.......2005-03-31
If you have never heard Anne-Sophie this is the CD you should buy first. Its fun! Its exciting! Its dynamic! Anne-Sophie brings this music to life in the way only she can. I'm not a technical expert when it comes to music, I just know that I like this CD.
Note: The first time I played this CD in my office (I'm very noisy in my office) I had people run in to ask who was the violinist. They wanted to buy this CD. You should buy it too.
Heart's Delicacy.......2004-06-25
I got this CD a long time ago & i remember the first time I heard the 1st song i knew I was into something different. Mutter is very expressive & the sound is crystal clear U could hear every note retaining in its originality. The Show stopper for me is & will alwayz be compositions by Pablo De Sarasate.(I also like Fritz Kreisler) I like his compositions because they sound so fun his music was not as serious as that of Bruch but very similar. Pablo had a different style & teases the mind & heart to such an extent I thought my heart could not take any more of these simple magnifique delicacys of the soul. Sophie Anne Mutter knows exactly how to bring that style that captures the ear & mind. "carmen fantasy" will make u love violin guaranteed. This is a MUST HAVE in your collection.DO NOT BE ALAYED BY THE BAD REVIEWS IN THIS CD THEY ARE SIMPLE PEOPLE WHO DO NOT APPRECIATE CLASS.
.....not impressive.......2003-10-21
I love Ms. Mutter and how she plays, but I have to say this was one of her worst albums. I thought that the Tzigane was very good and different from all the other recordings of it and it kept me listening but the Sarasate......was not that impressive. The Zigeunenrweisen was very just there. It wasn't great or junk it was just....there...The Carmen Fantasy though was horrible, i think she shoulda redone the last movement where she coulda practiced her shifts...I think that Pearlman and Sarah Chang played the fantasy with the Zigeunenrweisen much better. SO i think u shoulda waste ur time on this album, buy Chang's Fire and Ice was much better than this album...
Mixed Reaction.......2001-07-15
I heard a lot about Ms. Mutter and heard her performances on radio a few times, but this was the first time I got one of her recordings and listened carefully into her performances. I must say that my reaction is mixed.
First, on negatives... I was amazed that at a few places, she was simply and glaringly out of pitch. For example, in 'Meditation', she played the high F# of the first section way sharp. The orchestra and the soloist were off-pace at times. On expressive slow phrases, the tone wasn't warm enough. Rather, it was coarse and felt artificially suppressed.
In contrast, she exhibited great clarity and brilliance on virtuouso phrases. It seemed she was much more comfortable with 'devilishly' difficult phrases than slow sentimental phrases. I also felt that her articulation on 'gypsy' phrases was excellent--full of energy and raw emotion.

a feast of violin virtuosity.......2006-03-02
What a tone! David Oistrakh was a virtuoso, of that there is no doubt. What makes his playing stand apart, though, is his rich, full, round tone. Oistrakh does not draw attention to his technical skill, he draws attention to the music.
These duets, with Vladimir Yampolsky on piano, were recorded at Abbey Road in London in early 1956, and first released by EMI in 1957. It's a fine set of "showpieces," beginning with Tartini's sonata in G minor, "The Devil's Trill." Slow lyrical numbers like Debussy's "Clair de lune" and Ysaye's "Extase" are interspersed with livelier numbers such as de Falla's "Siete canciones populares espanolas" and Koday's "Three Hungarian Folk-dances."
This is an easy recommendation for anyone who loves great violin music, another truly "Great Recording of the Century" from the EMI vaults.

Customer Reviews:
More than the sum of the parts........2001-02-04
I bought this as wallpaper music - and got a very pleasant surprise!
Several of the pieces stopped me in my tracks, made me sit down and forced me to listen.
Michala Petri demonstrates a masterly control of her instrument and a high level of musicianship in a wide ranging selection of material - from reconstituted Bach to specially composed 20th Century pieces.
Outstanding for me was the Sammartini Concerto: Ms Petri shows a lightness of touch combined with serious enthusiasm and an obvious delight that literally stopped me from working and made me listen. The support given by the Moscow Virtuosi also deserves mention.
Koppel's pieces are fun, as are the arrangements from Grieg and Satie.
Overall, although this could be taken as a glorified sampler... it is much more - there are complete works played intelligently and lighter, throw away pieces you'll want to chase after and listen to again.
A Great First CD.......2000-06-22
After falling in love with the recorder, I started searching for CDs and this was the first I bought. It quickly became a favorite CD. I like the fact that it ranges over a wide period--Baroque to Modern, and showcases the instrument in different settings. The liner notes are quite comprehensive as well. In a word--enchanting.
The sublime collection.......2000-06-18
I must confess up front to being a Michala Petri fanatic. I also play the recorder, although after listening to this album, I feel like throwing my instruments into the nearest dumpster.
Michala Petri is a national hero in Denmark, and a recognized name among classical music fans in Europe, Asia, and Canada. If you listen to this album, you will ask yourself how the music business in the USA can frantically promote "The Three Tenors" while mostly ignoring the genius of this amazing young woman.
This is not your kid's recorder. Ms Petri's complete technical and musical mastery of her instrument transforms the recorder into the equal of other familiar solo instruments, but with its own peculiar sound, penetrating but sweet, that sets it apart.
This album is made up mostly of tracks from her many earlier recordings. Some are transcriptions of well-loved piano miniatures (the Grieg numbers are perhaps more charming here than on the piano, if that is possible); of baroque works for flute, recorder, or strings; of modern recorder music written for Ms Petri by contemporary masters. Some are accompanied by small orchestra and others by Ms Petri's husband, the excellent guitarist and lutist Lars Hannibal. The combination of recorder and guitar is an intimate match made in heaven, and I recommend also this duo's complete album, 'Air'.
Ultimate Collection is Gross Understatement.......2000-03-28
This is by far the best "sampler" I have ever heard. The playing is so superb and the recorder so perfect a vehicle that I found myself listing to too often played pieces like Satie's Gymopedie No.1 as if for the first time. Same for the Grieg. It is very hard to believe these renderings aren't the original intention of the composers. This is a guaranteed winner.

Product Description
Boosie's first official street-fed mixtape album 'Bad Azz, vol. 1' helped launch his career outside of Louisiana. Already hot in Baton Rouge on the local tip, Boosie's first volume of 'Bad Azz' helped Boosie get ready to become a star in the South. Back with the second volume of his 'Bad Azz' official street series, Boosie hits you with more hardcore gangsta fire from that other side of Louisiana. With 19 new tracks and freestyles, this CD will definitely help keep the Boosie movement moving.

Amazon.com's Best of 1998
Violinist Andrew Manze did something truly breathtaking in 1998--he transformed the way we hear Giuseppe Tartini's The Devil's Sonata by playing it solo, without accompaniment. And we'll never hear it the same way again. It's a riveting performance, filled with as much improvisation as many jazz compositions, and yet it remains thoroughly faithful to Tartini's vision (Manze was inspired to play the work solo by the composer's own correspondence). Hands down, one of the best Baroque performances ever. --Jason Verlinde
Amazon.com essential recording
This is one of the craziest classical CDs you will ever hear, but the madness is inspired. Andrew Manze, following a suggestion in one of Tartini's letters, gets rid of the published accompaniment and plays these pieces on the solo violin. In the other three works he takes plenty of liberties, but in the famous Devil's Trill Sonata he embellishes, improvises, departs from the text and comes back again. The verbal description sounds like my idea of a nightmare, but the execution is so inspired that this is one of the most compelling Baroque performances ever. Whether it is "authentic" or not, I have no idea, and Manze probably doesn't either. But this is a recording you will remember. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Astounding recording, worthy of consideration!.......2006-02-02
I picked this disc up several years ago, and I frequently return to it whenever I crave a fine example of baroque violin. The naysayers will say what they will about Manze's departure from a literal interpretation of the music, while his advocates point out that this is very much in the style of baroque performers as historians now understand it.
In either case, Manze proves that this music is still as alive and relevant as it was in Tartini's day. The perfomance is technically above reproach. The only complaint I can think of, and I'm nitpicking here, is that there is just a bit too much reverb for my liking. I prefer a much more straightforward recording of solo violin work, such as in the Michael Rabin or Itzhak Perlman recordings of Paganini's 24 Caprices.
This disc was well worth the $20 I paid for it.
One of the Greatest Baroque Players Today.......2005-10-06
Andrew Manze utterly captures the essence of Baroque playing in this recording. At the heart of Baroque tradition is embellishment and intricate decoration, beautifully exmplified in this work. The quality of Manze's playing is heard in his masterful control of tone and dynamic. As a violinist, I am awed by his ability and the passion that he exudes. In particular his dynamic range and control of vibrato makes this work fascinating to listen to. If you wish to hear a recording that best exemplifies the music of the Baroque period as it was intended to be played, this recording is for you.
I think this is actually the devil playing!.......2005-03-19
Manze's interpretation of the Devil's Trill Sonata is absolutely breathtaking. Other than the pure amazing virtuosity, the most brilliant part of Manze's rendition is that despite the extreme amount of liberty he takes with the piece, it still remains true to the style and feel of the original.
Tartini said that he heard the Sonata played by the Devil in a dream, but was unable to fully capture the way it sounded when he woke and composed it. When I hear Manze's version, I can't imagine the piece could have been any better in Tartini's original dream than it is on this CD.
If you are a purist this rendition might not interest you from a historical perspective. However, as a music lover, I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't like this amazing CD. Enjoy!
Hauntingly Beautiful.......2004-11-13
Having listened to several performances of Tartini's the Devil's Sonata this is simply gorgeous. Andrew Manze is breathtaking and amazing, to think it is only played by one man yet it seems like a full orchestra. The technique of the Devil's Sonata is estounding and truelly unigue and masterful, but with Manze it was made Heavenly. I was taken away by this CD and I think anyone with a true appreciation for beauty will be. I like to think Tartini would be proud of this performance.
Angela.
The Devil's Sonata as it Should be Played!.......2004-11-06
If I wish to demonstrate to someone why the 'Baroque Violin' is special, this is the album I play to them. There is no 'modern' rendering that approaches it. The dynamic range, intimacy and passion inherent in this CD are incomparable. Though I am sure the adherents of Josh Bell, Sarah Chang and Vanessa Mae would hoot me down, I will assert that in musicianship and technical ability Manze is the finest violinist living. Period.
In over 20 years of pursuing the 'ideal' solo violin recording this would be my choice.

Angèle Dubeau is a remarkable violinist, and here, she and her all-woman, 12-strong (including herself) group, La Pieta, tackle some of the showiest---and most interesting---virtuoso pieces composed or transposed for solo violin and strings, in various combinations, and occasionally featuring a piano. The violin tone at the start of Saint-Saens' Danse Macabre has a warmth which stays with us throughout the disc, despite the fact that so many of the pieces are razzle-dazzle. Hearing the delicious can-can from the overture to Orpheus in the Underworld so thrillingly played, with as much emphasis on the piano as the violin, is a treat, and the "Fire dance" from El amor brujo positively throbs. There's great skill---even daring---in the Tartini "Devil's Trill" sonata and a Boccherini Sonata, but the string tone never turns strident. And as a complete surprise, Dubeau and her group offer an arrangement of The Rolling Stones' "Paint it Black" which teases and riffs before getting into the melody, then plays it in the lower reaches of the instrument, and is then joined by the piano, allowing it to reach upwards and jazzily improvise---and then she throws in a moment or two of "Sympathy for the Devil" (!) before it concludes with the original melody. There are other joys on this CD as well---this is not your everyday violin bon-bon recital. It's all highly recommended. --Robert Levine
Album Description
This mischievious recital celebrates works inspired by the Devil: from Tartini's Devil's Trill, written after the composer dreamt that he had sold his soul to the Devil, to the infernal whirlwinds of Saint-Saën's Danse Macabre and Dompierre's Les Beautés du diable, composed specifically for La Pietà. It also pays homage to Paganini, the famed violinist who once confided to a friend that the Devil led him by the hand. This program shows an impish sense of humor as well... it features a unique arrangement of The Rolling Stones' Paint it Black and Sympathy for the Devil! Angèle Dubeau is one of Canada's most prominent recording artists. belonging to the exclusive group of Canadian classical soloists who can boast of having attained "gold" sales status. She is also the founder and director La Pietá. This CD is packaged with a bonus DVD featuring video clips and live concert excerpts.

FABULOUS!.......2007-02-15
I ADORE this CD. I first heard it on the local classical music station and my ears picked right up. "What IS that?" It was so alive, so vibrant. The station only plays it about once a year, but each time it catches my attention. "Ah, that's Angele Dubeau." The selections are a mix of new and old. Two of the new pieces are by Francois Dompierre; his "Le Diable matou" is one of my favorites. I play this CD over and over and over...
I disagree with the reviewer who said you must love violin music to enjoy this. I do enjoy the violin, but I think the CD's power and reach go far beyond violin lovers.
The CD also includes a DVD of concert excerpts.
Give this CD a try. I'm so glad I did.

The sound is tight and fresh. But take heed--only a person who love`s violin works would enjoy this c-d.And i would be one of those persons.ESP.Hot Women with violins!!!
Unique and pleasant........2006-12-23
It is refreshing to hear something new. The tracks are old favorites but the sound is new. Different. And in a good way.
Not the same old interpretations sped up or slowed down. But a genuine new groove down a familiar road.
She is a great violinist and has a knack for interplay with the rest of the band. It's not a flashy highly technical performance like you may expect from Perlman or Mutter. But not on the emotional ragged edge like Sonnenberg. But something in between with a new twist.
Emotional, Powerful, Fizzy.......2005-05-19
Long a stodgy devotee of baroque music, with the first few notes of this strong stuff I became an addict. Over and over again I play this CD, never quite anticipating the power and emotional bang of the music as it plays - even though I know the notes by now. If you ever studied Walter Piston's "harmony" the structures and transitions are back-of-the-book stuff, but the push is all elemental, basic, built-in, the familiar 1-4-5 with musical sequins, trampolines, backflips, and gelginite. Wow. And then some.
I'm so besotted, I had a couple of 13-year old boys (my son and a friend) listen to it in the car one day. They were bug-eyed after a couple of cuts, and not with horror. Now they ask for it, and yell with glee when the musical tension breaks over their heads in crashing chords.
Can I add a few more stars?
Infernal Violins.......2004-04-12
This music is fantastic. Because the violin she uses is a Stradovarius, the music pours like liquid velvet out of it. The choices of compositions are fantastic also. I think her interpretation of them along with the violin and her back-up group are what make this album so outstanding.
