Robert Shaw is really making unique music here, somewhere in the hinterland between dub and electronica. Despite the dense layers of electronic texturing - bleeps, clicks and reverbs pile up all over the place - there's always a simple melodic line to catch and a real emotional undertow. It's a neat trick and wonderful contradiction - frantic and unpredictable, yet simple and endlessly engaging.
Sometimes the trick works better than others - the temptation to use comedy groans, clanks and farting noises can become a little intrusive, but in general there's more interesting noises and samples in one Mighty Math track than the entire last Prodigy album. What's so refreshing is the lack of a po-faced 'intelligent dance' asthetic, except perhaps in "Ambientsoho" (named after the legendary store of the same name), which is a dead ringer for Autechre. Which is no bad thing.
Highlights include "Commonelectric" which bounces along like a bouncy thing with a deep bass throb and abbreviated cheers and "Soulboy" with it's weird random shouts of "Albert!".
I've recommended this album to many people and had an almost universally positive response, so I can only hope that someone else takes a punt. I'm gagging to hear what happens next....
