A CD of radio-worthy songs.......2007-06-27
As a DJ on Radiostarone, an internet radio station, I am always on the lookout for music. P.S.: A Toad Retrospective provides song after song after song of broadcast worthy material.
P.S. -- This album is bloody brilliant........2007-06-13
Let me start this way: If I were marooned on the proverbial deserted island, and could only bring five albums with me, Toad's "P.S." would certainly make the list. Some albums are "instant classics", but this one is "instantly indispensible": once you've jammed to it a few times you can't imagine your music collection without it. And don't want to.
The outstanding features of TtWS, and what differentiates it from so many of its contemporaries, are the superb songwriting, emotionally honest vocals, and the wide emotional range of the songs. "Something's Always Wrong" is as sad-hearted and bleak a song as you can imagine; "Way Away" is beautifully written life-advice that comes off as profound rather than pretentious; "Walk on the Ocean" alternates between humor and melancholy while also offering pointed guidance about seizing the moment; "Jam" is stirring, powerful and replete with the brilliant, quirky lyrics that are this group's trademark ("Such a quiet din!"); and "Hold Her Down" is just all up your face and tough from first strum to last. Wow.
Since I keep mentioning the lyrics, it's only fair I give you a taste (from "Good Intentions"):
It's hard to rely on my good intentions
When my head's full of things that I can't mention
It seems I usually get things right but I can't understand what I did last night
And it's hard to rely on my own good senses
When I miss so much that requires attention
I have to laugh at myself at sometimes
And I can't see that I'm not blind
There's little relief
Give us reprieve
For all the things I've left behind
I'm positive that I'm not blind
I'm not afraid things won't get better
But it feels like this has gone on forever
You have to cry with your own blue tears
Have to laugh with your own good cheer
I can't be hard on you
'Cause you know I've been there too
Learned a lot of things from you
But life gives little relief
Give us reprieve
And when everyone is cold as ice
I clinch my fists and close my eyes
Imagining the world outside
But I can see that I'm not blind
"P.S." packs 16 songs, which include this band's better known hits ("Walk on the Ocean", "Fall Down", "Good Intentions" etc.) as well as some lesser-known gems and a couple of remixes. If you were going to introduce a newcomer to the group, you probably couldn't do better than to hand them "P.S.": they'll be surprised how many of the songs they already know.
Long and short: if you're a Toad fan, this album is a must-have, and if you're not, it will make you one in 56:30 flat.
Massive.......2007-02-19
This CD holds a treasure trove of massively nostalgic tracks. I think Toad were guilty for many of those great hits we heard on radio but never quite knew who sang them.
Of particular sepia-toned effect was the track 5 Good Intentions.
super critic.......2006-09-03
I bought this one for the remix of "all i want" and there are some other remixes to the original that sound better than the original and there are some of the other songs besides the remixes that i had not heard before that i like too!!!
This CD bring up good atmosphere........2006-09-01
I didn't know this band before, but than I heard "Fall down" at the radio, loved it and decided to give this band a try.
It was a pleasure to discover this band. Great songs, very melodic, cosy.
The fellow's at the local pub loved it as well.

Still Love Toad.......2006-05-10
I don't usually bother with writing reviews, but I feel I owe to the band, as well as to a great many potential listeners who may not be familiar with the group. This was my first Toad album (11 years or so ago), and I've been an avid listener ever since. I enjoy the emotion they can put into the simplest of stories. Makes me feel like I was right there with them. Every song on this album is a journey.
My personal favorite is the "Nightingale Song". Very short, very simple, VERY uplifting. On my worst day, this song always puts the world back into perspective for me. Makes me smile, and what more can one ask for than that?
Wow.......2006-03-16
Just bought this. The two main songs on it, as usual, still great. The rest, even better! Only CD I think I've heard where I've loved ALL songs...and they keep getting better.
after hair metal craze and before grunge.......2006-01-25
Beginning the 90s this group set a new hope in music, unfortunately after two succesful albums the group went into oblivion. This album was its first succesful album (Dulcinea was their second). It is a great buy if you like soft alternative rock, good melodies, and a warm and great voice. If the lost decade of music (the 90s) has any remarkable albums, this is one of them.
Grrrrrreat CD!!!.......2005-11-30
I saw these guys back in May of '92 and they were great! They were supporting this album and opening for Chris whitley at the Back Room in Austin,Texas. They played all the songs from this album. From the opening of Walk on the ocean you could tell these guys were great songwriters, under appreciated to this day though. If you buy this album you will not be disappointed!!
Good songs, but a downer of an album........2005-10-28
I love this band. I am currently enjoying their compilation album, "P.S.," which is excellent. This album on the other hand, has to go into the category of decent and enjoyable, but not quite good enough to buy. The problem with this album, basically, is the bitterness and negativity present in ALL of the songs on this album. Now I know that Toad isn't exactly the happiest band around, which is fine, but as a whole this album is a real downer. For me, at least, it's hard to listen to front-to-back for that reason. Basically, the whole is less than the sum of its parts. No songs are bad or annoying or feel like filler though, but it could use at least a few pick-me-ups.
My favorites on this album are "All I Want," "Hold Her Down" and especially now, "I Will Not Take These Things for Granted." That last one is so beautiful, it's repetitious but for some reason it doesn't feel like it goes on too long - it just sounds so heartfelt and the lyrics go with the music very well. I would like to see if any other of their original releases, which I haven't heard, are worthwhile though - fans seem to like Dulcinea the best. I'd like to find out if this band is more than just a "greatest hits" band - I hope so.

Another great CD by Toad.......2007-05-24
Dulcinea is probably my favorite of all the Toad discs. From the upbeat "Nanci" to the somewhat aggressive "Woodburning"... this is loaded with great songs.
One of the best albums I've ever heard........2007-05-07
There are fans on here who have described this album as good as I could have so there is no reason for me to be descriptive and analyze every song. I will tell you this, If you dont know Toad The Wet Sprocket, you should. This album is fantastic. It has great songs on it, period. You will not here songs even close to the caliber of these on MTV or the radio. If you are a person who is passionate about good music, then this record is for you.
not even their best.......2006-08-22
I was first introduced to Toad through some people at camp. I know a guy who played "windmills" on his guitar countless times around the campfire. Further, people always talked about/sang these great songs. I was pleasantly surprised that each one of these songs was by one group-Toad The Wet Sprocket.
Which led me to pickup the compilation-P.S., my first official Toad experiance. Though I was a bit disappointed by the absence of Windmills, I was stuck on it for at least half a year. It's still one I come back to when I can't decide on a Toad album to listen.
I needed more. It took a while, but I finally picked up this as my first non-compilation toad album, mostly because of the hype that this was their best, and after hearing "Nanci" and, of course, Windmills, as well as a couple of songs off P.S.
To make a long story short, I now own (and love) all their cds (including the Acoustic Dance Party EP). Toad is one band that never has made a cd less than stellar. Though not their best cd (that honour would go to either Coil or Fear), this is just one of the batch, and is addicting as all of them.
Highlights: Fly From Heaven, Woodburning, Something's Always Wrong, Crowing, Nanci, Windmills, Falldown
'To give me life...'.......2006-06-06
Not much to say about this album other than it's a classic. Easily one of the best alternative rock albums ever. Every song is memorable, and Glen has a great voice. I've had this album since it came out (since I was 9 years old) and it sounds just as good now as it did then. In fact, all their stuff is great, so get them all (especially "Pale", which is very underrated IMO).
Anyway, great band. Wish they were still around.
Perfect.......2006-05-06
How can you rate an album as perfect? Well, in my opinion, it only happens when you put the disc in and never skip a song. You are compelled to listen to every song sequentially because each song grabs you in the first 5 seconds. You never get the feeling that they needed a couple of "filler" songs and threw together some crap in the studio (and lets face it, this is exactly what most bands today are doing).
I first heard this album on my way home from our senior trip in high school (circa 94). I had the fantastic experience of listening to the whole disc through. I was amazed when it ended...and left wanting more. So, i started it over and listened to it again. Amazing stuff. I mean, how many times in life do you run across an album that you feel compelled to listen to all the way through TWICE?
Every song is valuable and an experience unto itself. If you like to think, reflect and maybe even mourn a little, this disc is perfect.

All I Feel I Hope.......2006-06-02
I truly enjoy this whole cd. I own all of Toad the Wet Sprocket official releases. I have never been disappointed by any of there releases. Still, I do have which one of their releases are my favorites. This cd is one of the favorites...if anything for the track "Hope." A beautifully haunting ethereal song which I enjoy playing on those cloudy rainy days.
Great lyrics, great musicianship, and great artistry. Great work from these guys....Well done!!!
Another great album from a great band.......2006-05-23
Underrated is the word for this band...and this album doesn't dissapoint! Great songwriting, and a great voice and musicianship! Makes me miss the early 90's as well!!
miss early 90's.......2005-10-31
I miss the early 90's. Toad summs up early 90's alternative music for me. This album is my second fav from them.
just too good to imagine.......2002-11-18
This album is......... superb! I can't get enough of it right now and forever. I orginally bought it in casette format for only one song, "Good Intentions" back in the day. Oh, btw Toad has returned to the stage(for a limited time only I guess) as an opening act for Counting Crows. I think it should it be the other way around. Alright back to the review. I constantly find myself mouthing the words of every single song on the album(to myself of course) when I'm not listening to it. Its just one addicting style of music that never ceases to amaze the ears and soul. Toad is a California dream that fell from the sky. Who ever said the trend moves East to West??? West to east is more like it. I love Glen Phillips. He is sooo talented. I just listened to "Albulum" on DVD-Audio. If you can get your hands on it--go for it. It is unreal. It has a live performance of Glen performing in California at his local favorite hotspots such as Largo in Santa Monica or Santa Barbara(I forget-oops)acoustic only. He is unreal to see live. The sound quality od DVD Audio for those Audiophiles will be soooo impressed. I had to keep turning the main volume down a hair so that my ear drums wouldn't explode. 5.1 channel--there is no substitute. I wish "In Light Syrup" was offered in DVD Audio format. My favorite songs include "Little Heaven", "All in All", "So Alive" and of course "G.I."
Alright stop reading this and go buy the cd(my cassette is wearing out!!)

The earlier Toad was darker and more consistent:.......2005-10-08
Toad's second release Pale is Glen Phillips in his finest lyrically. His voice has not reached its peak yet, but fits the purpose. Pale is the perfect rainy day album. Slow, somber, haunting and beautiful. Not for everyone, espically if you only care about the music. Corporal Brown is almost funny in the delivery of the lyrics. This song stated that the corporal killed his fat wife and buried her. Again great lyrics!
Other albums "Pale" in comparison........2005-07-05
I enjoy all that Toad The Wet Sprocket has done, but their early albums I'm most fond of. Maybe it's because of countless summer nights listening to this album or their debut while sitting in city parks daydreaming, but it's most likely the fact that the music is so good, so moving, and so real. "Pale" is short any actual hits, but that's also part of the appeal. The whole thing is very consistent in mood, and each track is a hit to me. "Torn" and "Come Back Down" are great songs to start, and maybe my personal favorites are "High On A Riverbed", "I Think About", and "Chile". Those are reasons why I still listen to Toad often. The second half/side of this album isn't quite as perfect as the first, but still holds its own. This album still gets frequent play in my house even after 15 years, and I pray that Glen Phillips plays something from "Pale" when I see him live this week.
colorless Pale?.......2004-05-30
Toad the Wet Sprocket was one of those bands I loved when I was younger that just seemed dull to me as I became aware of more and more music. Yet I still return to those albums sometimes for that quality of innocence in their spare guitar-driven progressive melodies, and so the band tends to be fairly innofensive and even dull at times, they have moments of real transcendence. That, at least, is what I found recently listening to Pale, which has its share of doggerel, but occasionally, there's a song like "Don't Go Away," which is ebullient and heartfelt, or "Liars Everywhere," which is as powerfully felt as any song of the REM-lite genre of prog-rock (if not any song by REM). This record doesn't always shine, but it's bare and moving where it counts.
ah yes, the long lost treasure.......2003-10-24
pale speaks purely with the lyrics and not so much w/ the musical aspects which is why i like it so much. although the guitars, drums, etc. still are lovely as w/ any toad album. the lyrics from pale truly stand out as the focal point.
as the second work from this band, i'd say they did an excellent job in showing improvement from the first "bread and cicus." pale starts off w/ a bang w/ the infectuous "torn." the song is rather depressing, but let's the listening sort of relate to this feeling.
"come back down" starts w/ the same tone as "torn" but shortly picks up later on. it's hard to explain the way this song makes me feel, but it's almost like the somber feeling after you get done crying, but yet at the same time over what you are crying about and ready to move on.
the mood shifts slightly w/ "don't go away." sort of a mere plea to tell someone to stay around. almost as if the song is begging to the listening and wants them to keep listening to the rest of the album.
probably the saddest song is "high on a riverbed." a man walking in the rain w/ his head down just thinking comes to my mind. as if something terrible just happened and they are trying to walk away from it. very moving song.
the next song, "i think about" is my favorite song on the album. the same sad, depressing sound continues in this song. but a ray of hope is noticed in the chorus. i like this song, b/c it gives promise and hopefulness to whoever can relate.
"corporal brown" is w/o a doubt the strangest song on the album. probably the most playful song, even though the lyrics are really hiddeous. a man gets drunk, hits his fat wife, and kills her then buries her. the man is then worried what will happen to them. although the tone of the song is ironic w/ the words, it's really a mystery what the true meaning of the song is.
the single "jam" which might be the only reason someone has heard of this album back in the day before toad really started to make it big, is really a nice song. it has the quality of a single, but unfortunately doesn't rank up w/ their later work. still good.
my next favorite song, "chile" is sort of a haunting song. it's sort of like a strike against society. morality vs. the law, and expressing free speech. toad does a good job in expressing their beliefs, and the song sounds beautiful as well.
"liars everywhere" sounds like it should be on 'fear." it's a short little song, not a lot of lyrics, but it certainly sets the stage for their next album and their next phase in their music.
"nothing is along" can be considered a song about faith. talks about how no matter what, you will never be alone, and someone is always watching you. very nicely done.
the final song, "she cried" is a relief from all the sad songs about how the guys are stood up by the girls. this song is about the girl who can't get the guy. it's reassuring that this occurance happens on both sides. once again, the awesome deep sound is here, making it another classic toad song.
"pale" may not rank up w/ the commerical success of "fear" or the brilliance of "dulcinea" but it is surely not to be ignored by any toad fan. i must say that the few people who own this record are grateful they can here all the wonderful songs which toad have to share. it is truly a work of art.
Epitomizes Toad music, but not for the newest of fans.......2003-06-19
As a "Toad primer" (if there is such a thing), this album would probably fail for its abandonment of typical teen angst clich?s (melodically and lyrically); for a new fan, Coil or Dulcinea (maybe Fear, but to a lesser degree) would probably be best suited as intro albums. That's probably why a good minority of reviewers (on other sites, especially) open their texts with witty puns e.g. "Pale pales in comparison to other Toad albums." I was introduced to Toad with Coil, their final studio album that spawned some radio and television play (Dawson's Creek, &c,). Honestly, at the time, I probably would have thought Pale the weaker of Toad's repertoire. But after listening to all albums (several repeated many times in my playlists), I must say I have begun to find Pale the strongest of the lot.
As an album, Pale epitomizes Toad's ability to weave intricate lyrics with melodious vocals and instrumentation, giving rise to a very cohesive musical package. From the sullen opening of "Torn" to the despairing verses of broken promises in "She Cried," the songwriting in Pale embraces the melancholy that has so often yielded great Toad music. Glen is at his best lyrically, although vocally he still has a ways to go (one can follow his maturation from Pale onward, through Fear and Dulcinea); however, in the context of this album, his ability as a literate lyricist and talented composer trumps his vocal shortcomings and gives way to some amazing plaintive songwriting.
I would recommend this to anybody with a shred of musical taste, especially if you're a Toad fan who's playlist has been restricted to the more popular Dulcinea and Coil. Give it a chance; it's one of the few albums that I think genuinely deserves 5 stars and should be considered one of the best albums of the 90s.

Toad on the Road.......2007-02-04
Toad The Wet Sprocket were riding at their peak when this concert took place. "Fear" became their biggest seller and the top forty welcomed "All I Want" and "Walk On The Ocean." This being a homecoming concert, both the band and their Santa Barbara fans were stoked, and the show comes off as a hero's welcome.
The band has always been underrated, and the compositions here (from the first three albums) show a lot of strength. Glen Phillips' gifts as a song-writer have never been truly recognized. While he (and the band, who co-wrote the majority of the material) did cultivate a folkish and, even at a certain level, mellow sound, there is a dark streak to many of their best songs. "One Little Girl" and "Hold Her Down" are unflinching takes on abuse, while "I Will Not Take These Things For Granted" may be the most beautiful song to never hit the top-40. They were also not shy from experimenting, as "Butterflies" shows. (Love the Beatles quote at the end!)
All in all, "Welcome Home: Live" shows Toad The Wet Sprocket in full gale as a band. A band that toughed it out through years on the road and a couple of poorly selling albums to develop the chemistry and the tenacity that they were still there when the lucky break occurred. Along with the "P.S." best of collection, this CD is a terrific representation of the band at their toadiest. Incidentally, Phillip's post-toad solo work is quite good. Check it out.
It's live Toad, what else do you need to know?.......2005-12-06
Oh man, what a gem for fans. This live disc from 1992 is nearly flawless. It does only draw from the first three albums, but that's exactly why I love it. It has numerous songs from both their debut and my favorite album "Pale", and roughly half the disc is from "Fear", which is their hit-heavy and most popular album. Plus this is 19 tracks and 74 minutes long. The songs stick to the originals for the most part, but being live gives them a nice fresh sound. Glen speaks at a few points, but keeps to jamming for the most part. I really have no complaints with the tracklist, but in a perfect world this would also include "Covered In Roses" and "High On A Riverbed". Still, it's an excellent live record, and a must for Toad-heads.
The definitive Toad album for their long-time fans........2005-04-08
I don't know how else to put it. This album is amazing. It captures Toad at their best, when it comes to live performances. It's a shame these guys didn't get more recognition.. they much more than deserved it.
Anyway, as I said, this is the boys at their best. Everything is spot on. Every song sounds just as good as their studio counterparts, and some are even better. The emotion and musicianship put into each song are unparalleled by almost any of today's top bands.
If you are a bigger fan of Toad's later works (Dulcinea and Coil sessions), you may not enjoy this as much, since this was a performance from 92. Naturally, it encompasses their first 3 albums. You might want give the samples a good listen or 2 before you decide on making this purchase.
But if you are a long time fan, and/or if you enjoy their early albums, you MUST BUY THIS NOW!! It is that good. I bought it about a month ago, and it is has never left my cd changer since...
This is the Toad album I have been waiting for.
Great live show from one of rocks's most overlooked bands.......2005-03-31
Finally, a live CD from Toad the Wet Sprocket. It's about time! And it surely doesn't disappoint. This band never got half the credit or recognition they deserved. But this CD is one treat for those of us who were fortunate enough to follow them throughout the years. My only complaint is that "Good Intentions" is not here. But that's all right. The outstanding quality of the album as a whole speaks for itself, and is reason enough to get this. If you're new to Toad the Wet Sprocket, I would recommend getting their studio albums first and then picking up this one. And for the long-time fan, get this NOW. Toad may be no more, but they sure left behind some great music.
Rare Gem-A MUST buy!!!.......2005-01-29
This album offers something for everyone, whether it be the seasoned fan or a newcomer to Toad's music. The versions of All I Want, Fall Down, and I Won't Take These Things for Granted are stellar, and some of the songs, like Know Me, are augmented with some new lyrics and intros. It's a perfect representation of what this band was capable of, and makes me wish they were still together. There are some neat little anecdotes from Glen (Is It for Me?, Brother), and the crowd is supportive, but not overbearing. This has to be one of the finest live recordings I've encountered recently. Even if you just remember Toad the Wet Sprocket from the early 90s, pick up this CD. You won't regret it. I can only hope there will be others.

A Very Poetic Dark Struggle.......2006-03-29
While this was Toad's last album it suggests that it could be the end of Glen Phillips' life: it was not. What it did end was a tremendous pop-rock/alternative-rock career. They will certainly be remembered.
The songs:
1. Starting at the top, the album led-off with the song "Whatever I Fear". The music to the song is very similar to the forth track "Dam Would Break". With regard to that, if you look at the album as a whole it becomes a necessary redundancy. That redundancy actually helps represent that head-spinning mind mess that is being represented on the album. Plus, when it is announced that he fears anything before him thus begins the dark struggle.
2. Yes, "Come Down" was a hit, but get past that. There is much more going on here than that. It sounds positive but the lyrics reflect desire and death is touched upon. There is some good guitar mini-solos and the vocals vary enough in emphasis to pull you right in.
3. "Rings" uses imagery that is hard to figure out and difficult to explain without reading. Basically, lines of the song mention rings of various ideas.
4. "Dam Would Break" sounds a lot like "Whatever I Fear". This time he talks about what could push him over the edge or break him rather than how he is afraid of the future. Some kind of nonword vocal addition like "ladalo" or something that was used adds to the mood and effects of the song.
5. The song "desire" seems like it would fit with the gloomy suicidal theme better than it does. It actually turns out that it is more a song about desire in general--although it is still described as a negative thing. The music gets more aggressive on this song.
6. The music alone in "Don't Fade" places the song right where it belongs--on this album. As for the lyrics, these lyrics suggest that somebody else is struggling. Although, "I need to know that someone still believes" can mean a lot of things. Is this song religous or personal?--You decide.
7. "Little Man Big Man" hardly fits the theme that most of this disc carries. The only strange or creepy lyric here is the "where is the beast..." lyric. This song is about personal worth and importance.
8. "Throw It All Away" seems to be about letting out frustration. Unless you want to take the song literally. Then, it is about destroying the personal possessions that consume your life and looking to fill the emotional voids in your life. This song is one of the quieter, mellower songs on the album even though it is slightly upbeat and optomistic.
9. "Amnesia" the name speaks volumes about the lyrical content of the song. The music is a bit more challenging to guess by the name. They went with an aggressive head-spinning type of song. This is by far the loudest song on the album and possibly the loudest song they have. It reflects amnesia as a dark gift.
10. "Little Buddha" would make sense without the chosen shorus lyrics. The "smile on, little buddha" stuff confuses what exactly is going on here and at the same time adds depth to the song as a whole and its meaning. This song is another rather mellow selection.
11. The song "Crazy Life" should probably switch spots with "Desire" on this disc. Did I mention that this is most certainly a concept album? This song exibits positive outlook while still mentioning the end. This song is a good reflection of how most of the ups and downs on this cd occur simultaneous. The guitar on this track is amazing, from the outstanding intro on throughout.
12. "All Things in Time" is slow and mellow. It is one of the more upbeat lyrical selections on the disc. The music still fits with the mood of the album and the specifics of what is going on here. It has an "all things will be alright" feeling to it but it hardly explains how and the other songs on the album make this feeling difficult to believe. It seems to work though because not knowing if things will be fine seems to be the point of the disc.
All in all it comes together into one piece. I find this album to be a must have, but listen to the clips if you think they will help.
My favorite Toad album.......2006-03-15
I borrowed this CD from a public library, having liked the track "Crazy Life" on the Empire Records Soundtrack, and I was immediately blown away by how consistently good Coil is the whole way through. It is their most mature album, full of gentle emotion and idealism, and puts the listener in a good mood. Glen Phillip's voice is unique, confident, and beautiful. I fell in love immediately with "Rings" and "Dam Would Break". The haunting and beautiful harmonies captivate. "Little Buddha" is so different but so good as well.
After I got Coil, I bought two of Toad's older albums: Fear and Dulcinea. Both are really good, but something keeps drawing me back to Coil. It is achingly beautiful, vibrant, thoughtful, and pleasurable. It is hearing Toad at their best.
It's like they wrote a greatest hits album in one shot.......2005-06-04
Usually on an album (even with a great band) there are those filler songs you skip because they aren't as good as the hits on the cd. That is not that case with this cd. This album awesome from start to finish, no need to skip songs on this one. I couldn't find it in any store, but I just bought it used for $2. That's insane!!!
Another great one.......2005-04-08
These guys have some of the catichiest songs ever. Great hooks, Great lyrics. My ex and I used to sing this cd alot. Just good!!!

More Than One Wind Blows.......2006-03-15
After reading the past reviews it seems that most have come to this debut album late in their Toad fan stages. This was my first album purchase of the band and it was because I heard "One Little Girl" on SF's "Live 105" radio station back in 1989. The album lived up to the promise of that single and beyond. It was raw, emotional and over the top with passion. It became my go-to album when I was moody, lonely or just wanted a walk by myself.
I'm glad I came to know them from this album. The later albums were more produced and polished and in some cases, as others have mentioned, produced some better songs, but this was their benchmark as far as pure raw talent is concerned in my opinion. I still play it and it never disappoints from start to finish and there isn't a throw-away or unnecessary song on it.
The earlier Toad was darker and more consistent:.......2005-10-08
Again with Bread and Circus the theory proves correct. How can an album with thin production have such a full sound. Easy, these guys graduated from the school of REM with an A+. Their music is original however. Bread and Circus may be their most consistent effort despite not having anything excellent on here. There are some great songs like Know Me, One wind blows, and One Little Girl being the best songs of their early days. There is not a bad song here, not even close. Later on their music would get less consistent but come up with better songs. So, which period, their consistent early period and eerie or the period where songs like Good intensions, Fall Down, I will not take these things for granted with a bad song here and here. You pick.
Great early "Toad"........2004-08-09
Even though I believe "Pale" is their best album, this debut is similar to it. "Toad The Wet Sprocket's" popularity came more with their later alt-pop sound, but this here is more alt-country really. "Way Away" was an early hit, and I also like "Unquiet", "Know Me", and "One Little Girl". However the closer "Covered In Roses" is the most moving song to me. I once made a tape which was just that song repeated. Anyway, anyone who likes the band, or similar ones should enjoy "Bread And Circus".
Solid Album.......2003-10-14
I will admit as w/ a few others here, Bread and Circus was my last addition to my Toad collection. It's hard to really compare this album to any other Toad ablum though. Simply b/c they were in the early stages of their music.
1989 wasn't really a year full of great music, it was a year full of experimenting music. You see alice in chains working on their debut, nirvana working on songs, but not yet clicking until a couple years later. R.E.M. doing their own little thing drastically altering their sound (see Out of Time) which they release in 91, a full 3 years after "green". U2, Soul Asylum, Soundgarden, Metallica, etc, etc. all these top bands are really actually starting to change their sound. So when Toad steps in, they fell right smack in the the middle of the crowd.
Bread and Circus, is a classic nonetheless, if you are a devoted fan. It seems like every song has this dark, eerie, kinda sleepy tone to it, maybe w/ the exception of "One Little Girl" and "Unquiet" which shows some signs of pep, but even then, the haunting guitars and vocals overlook that. I think that the music scene at the time, really set toad on a direct path of songwriting. They sorta wanted to make it big, but also have a quality of sound that was unique and could compete with the soon ever so popular genre of "mainstream."
The album, although really no singles i believe, provides some great songs. My favorites would be "Know Me" and "One Wind Blows". These may have found themselves easily on the "Pale" album, b/c they do bring the same quality of sound, but mainly b/c they are probably the most developed songs on the album. "Know Me", the longest song at 5:13, sorta starts off w/ some kind of storytelling which almost foreshadows the rest of the song which really actually picks up almost at the 45sec point. It's sort of a testiment of a young man trying to make a name for himself in the world, and wants everyone to really start to realize who he is.
"One Wind Blows" which picks up immediately, is a nice little "pale"ish sort of upbeat guitar rythym ditty. There's really nothing too special about the words, but it shows signs that the band will be something for years to come.
My other top picks include "Way Away", which in my opinion, sets the stage for the rest of the album. It's easy to listen from beginning to end, and is very free flowing. "When We Recover" is a short 3min depressing song in a sense that tells of hardships and unfortunate circumstances and hopes for a better life after the "recovery". It's a song of hope. "Always Changing" seems like a predesessor to other songs such as "Little Heaven", "Something's Always Wrong" and "Crazy Life". It's Bread and Circus' idea of the good slow song single.
The rest of the album is fantastic of course, for me being a huge toad the wet sprocket fan. However, opinions often may vary. Check it out, it's a great album, then and now. Even in that turmultous time in music. The dreaded year of 1989.
One Wind Blows.......2001-05-20
As a faithful Toad fan I had the luck to grab this cd one time I was in the States. Knowing this is the begining, one must have it. And what a begining. These guys recorded the album without much production or instrumentation. Yet they did a great cd, so emotional, letting us know what was about to come. Too bad you guys are gone as a band, I would have loved more songs like one of my all-time favorites: One Wind Blows. After a song like that, there's not much left.

This is a must for all Toad fans!.......1999-12-17
This is not a well known CD but one that should be in every true Toad fan's music library. Great acoustic performances in both studio and live settings. Also a must for anyone who has seen them live in concert. Too bad these guys broke up, they put on a great show. This CD is one way to experience that forever.
Great Acoustic Set.......1999-10-25
This is a GREAT CD. Of course, anything Toad is automatic greatness, and when you add acoustic and live to the equation you have a sure-fire win on your hands. It's well worth buying, especially if you like the songs "Something's Always Wrong" (Great studio acoustic version) and "Walk On The Ocean" (Randy Guss calls it one of two possible quintessential Toad songs--and just listen to that chorus live!!) I just wish there weren't those dang breaks in mid-conversation.....
Miss Them When They're Gone.......1999-07-24
Glen's clear voice and humanness PLUS the band's chemistry made for awesome live shows -- and a fine acoustic EP. On the anniversary of the breakup, missing them a good deal!
Best acoustic set I have ever heard.......1999-07-24
This is by far the best acoustic set out there, all five songs are just right on the money. If your a Toad fan then this is a must buy. The recording of "Somethings Always Wrong" is the best mix yet of that particular recording.
A fabulous set of great songs live........1998-08-24
This is a must have for toad fans. Hearing a band live brings you closer to the music, and the four live tracks on this cd are really great. It's also got an acoustic version of 'Somethings Always Wrong' which they recorded right after someone broke into their studio. Ironic? Altough it contains only five songs, it's well worth the buy.

This collaboration between former Toad the Wet Sprocket front man Glen Phillips and Nickel Creek's Sean and Sara Watkins and Chris Thile was rehearsed and recorded in six days in 2000 and is the result of a true mutual admiration between the parties. Some of the eight originals bear a connection with Phillips's erstwhile band, especially a song like "Somewhere Out There" with its lilting rhythms and dreamily atmospheric chordal structure. What's most telling is the breadth that this new context allows him as a songwriter. The rootsy Americana, subtle voicings, and front-porch settings seem hundreds of miles from the more urban character of Toad. It's nice to see Nilsson's "Think About Your Troubles," one of a handful of covers, emerging as a contemporary standard in new acoustic circles (having also been released this year in a version by the Asylum Street Spankers). MAS's version of Jon Brion's "Trouble" shows the ease with which these players blend pop sensibilities with the resilience of tradition. --David Greenberger

Why Don't I Like This More?.......2005-10-10
I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but 6 Days is not enough time to record an entire album, that's more than a track a day! Have you ever recorded music? Then you would know it takes days just to get one song sounding right. For all the love I have for Glen and Nickel Creek I was astonished that they put out an album like this, there's so much potential here, and you can feel it, but they just needed more time. If James Joyce could give 17 years of his life for "Finnegan's Wake," than I think these "mutual admirers" could've donated at least a week to an awesome idea like this, I hope they retry in the future and I'm sure the results will be just splendid, for now, stick to your Toad and Creek CDs and wait it out.
These other reviewers have gone mad.......2005-05-04
I have listened to this album several times on a portable discman with headphones, and also on my PC with it's cheap stock speakers, and neither time did I have any difficulty hearing the full range of sounds on each track. Since that appears to be the only complaint anyone else can muster, I can find no other faults. Glen sounds fabulous and the always stellar voices of Nickel Creek provide a perfect backdrop. I've had "Sake of the World" on loop for three days. It's light, smooth, a great listen when you need to relax.
A True Musical Pleasure.......2005-04-19
This is an album best listened to on a pair of good headphones. I could not truly begin to listen to it in the car. The music was there but not the real feel. Once I was able to sit down and enjoy it on the headphones it all came together. An absolutely beautiful collaboration of some truly great musicians. It is also one of those rare albums that only gets better each time I listen to it. If you are a fan of Glen Phillips work or Nickel Creeks it is a must for the collection.
amazing.......2005-03-26
I'm surprised by all these negative reviews. The album has so much quiet beauty. It gets better with every listen.
Can you hear me now?.......2005-02-24
Can you hear me now? Yes glen, we can hear you. I feel so bad saying this but this cd was mixed like crap. As I listened to the first track in my car I audibly said to myself, "what the crap is this?" Glen's voice was so loud and obnoxious. Not that his voice was obnoxious but the fact that I could hear nothing other than his voice. I listened to 3/4 of the song and could not take it anymore, so I skipped to the next song with the hope that the producer was going for a certain sound for that track, and that the rest would be fine. I was wrong. Virtually every song on this albums was mixed the same way. I was trying as hard as I could to listen to the music underneath but to no avail. I can tell that the music would be beautiful if it were audible. I love Nickel Creek. They are one of my favorite groups. I also love Toad, but for heavens sake, what is this? I am glad to see that I am not the only one that has noticed this.
