EVERY PERSON SHOULD HAVE THIS ALBUM.......2007-07-04
This is not gonna be a long review like others because it is simply put. Wonderful. In general, The Clash opens your mind and makes you wonder about things in this world of ours. I'm not just giving this a 5 because they are my favorate band. Another thing I would like to add, The Clash aren't just punk, they hit every single genre out there including reggae and jazz. If your a jazz fan, you will LOVE this album. EVERYONE WILL LOVE THIS ALBUM! LOOK HOW MANY 5 STARS THIS HAS!! ANYONE will love this album I guarentee It. Just to let you know I am 19 and being young, I bet even younger kids will like it. Or else they have no clue what music is.
The Clash's greatest album, and one of rock's most enduring masterpieces...........2007-07-02
Some critic said that this was the album where The Clash stopped being punks and learned how to play their instruments. Luckily for us, The Clash instantly matured as a band here to make arguably one of the greatest rock albums of all time, and maybe the greatest double album of all time. Out of the 19 tracks here, not one is a throwaway. The album is one of the best sequenced, most coherent albums ever made. There is not one song on here that I skip over. There are some that I like more than others, but there isn't one song that sucks. Most punk bands did one of two things. They either died/faded away, or they stopped being punks and learned how to make real music (I never liked punk, obviously). Luckily, The Clash followed the 2nd path, and made their masterpiece. I'll pick my favorite 10 songs here, but it isn't easy. The title track, Spanish Bombs, The Right Profile, Clampdown, The Guns of Brixton, Wrong 'em Boyo, Death or Glory, The Card Cheat, Revolution Rock, and Train in Vain are my favorites here. The Clash, along with The Sex Pistols who became Public Image Ltd., grew into a great band after giving up the punk thing (which really is very limiting, if you think about it). Their follow ups, Sandinista! and Combat Rock, are very good, but this is the best of their 5 studio albums (I don't count Cut the Crap). It's a shame they broke up (and Joe Strummer died), but we still have this great album...
Every Wannabe Rock & Roller Should Own This.......2007-06-05
London Calling is an unforgettable and classic CD that I personally think every wannabe rock and roller should have! Its jam packed with plenty songs, songs to get you riled up, songs to calmed down. This fantastic Album is filled with songs like, of course, "London Calling", "Lovers Rock", and "Spanish Bombs". All of these great tracks rolled into one terrific album. I have to say this is one of my faves, should be one of yours too.
Sattamassaganna for Jimmy Dred!.......2007-05-08
Great album if you like the Clash. In fact if you like the Clash you should already have this. I had it on vinyl and decided to replace it with CD now that I've done away with my turntable.
Five stars for anyone who likes the Clash. Otherwise it could range between zero and five stars, but isn't that how music always is? Amazon recommended "Never Mind The Bollocks" by the Sex Pistols to be purchased with this CD, and both are great but I much prefer "London Calling" in my old age of 45. I still crank up my car stereo when I play either one on the highway and suggest you do so as well, preferably with the windows down and a good breeze. It's just one of those albums that feels better that way!
Not sure if I spelled "sattamassaganna" correctly in my title for this review, but this is the only album I know with that word on it.
Definitely worth far more than the $8.99 price. I ordered this at the same time I ordered Rockpile's "Seconds of Pleasure", a completely different style of album from about the same time-- both are worthy of places in the collection of anyone who likes music from around the 1979-80 time frame. That was a time of many styles of music, many of which are now classics, including "London Calling".
The definitive 'must have' album.......2007-04-16
Hard to believe that this originally released in 1979 because I am still listening to it!! But then again this is what defines a classic -it's timelessness.
Plenty of reviews on this site cram as many facts about the band as they can muster in a few paragraphs to impress the other sicophants. It seems everyone is a frustrated rock critic. I'm not going to bore you with my rock knowledge of the Clash except to make this statement....This is one of the real 5 star albums out there..make no mistakes. The lyrics make a statement about the times and the music complements them perfectly.
A quick appraisal of the highlights....
London Calling needs no introduction as the killer track of the last few decades. It's powerful lyrics and chords thump it along until it reaches its haunting conclusion.."I never felt so much alike".....
Spanish Bombs...classic song with the spanish lyrics in the chorus...pure genius....
Lost in the supermarket....great storytelling type song about consumerism with Mick Jones pumping out the lyrics and supported by Strummer singing back up as only he can....
Death or Glory...when my 12 year old sang along to this in the car a few weeks ago I knew that this is the music that can transcend the generations. The line that starts "its been tested by research" still gives me a laugh
Train in Vain...Mick singing a melancholy ballad about being let down....
In short, everyone should have a copy of this album in their collections. The best part for any new fans is that there are so many great Clash songs on their other albums that you will not be disappointed and maybe like me you will be listening and still loving it 20 years later......

The Essential Clash demonstrates once again how superior the Clash were to any of their punk peers. It's striking that, while the effects of the movement continue to resonate decades later, most '70s punk has dated badly. Even the great singles of the Sex Pistols, perhaps because they encapsulated the time so perfectly, do little more than remind one of 1977. But this fine 40-track double-disc collection demonstrates that the Clash's sound maintains its vitality, whether in the apocalyptic foreboding of "London Calling" or the sulking "I'm So Bored with the USA." When frontman Joe Strummer died in December 2002 at age 50, much was made of the political conscience he'd brandished throughout his career; it must be noted that appearing to be a great thinker in comparison to other rock singers is no great accomplishment. I'm a die-hard Clash fan. This is a great collection of "The Only Band that Matters"! It has almost all of their classic material, then also documents their later years. It's worth reliving the glorious music of their prime, as well as some of their music from their later, admittedly lesser, years, isn't it?!? Long Live The Clash! Buy this CD; it's great!
The Best Clash Compilation, to date........2007-01-25
If you're looking for a complete, full anthology of The Clash, this is the one to get. It's got all the hits, plus some minor hits, it's simply the best collection of them that you will find, so far. The sound is excellent, too. If you love good 70s-80's punk and pop you'll love this! :)
A great collection... all you really need for The Clash.......2006-12-26
This is a great collection. All the 'hits' and important songs are here. Some of the second half of disc two is a little slow, especially the stuff from Cut the Crap, but great all the same. And for those who say this isn't punk, they may think that because it doesn't sound like 'punk' should (what should punk sound like?), because this is the most original punk. The Clash was a punk band whose sound evolved as their talents evolved.

It's clear than many of thoses song have been written for radio... The Clash are to Punk what Poison are to Metal !!! You woN,t find real punk music here, only early 80 pop songs... If you are looking for punk, try The Sex Pistols, The Ramones or The Stooges, but not the Clash...
The only CD set you'll ever need.......2006-02-26
I didn't know I was a Clash fan until I bought this CD set. I went to the store and saw it on the rack. There were four songs that I already knew and figured there'd be at least a few more I would like so I bought it. Out of the 40 songs, I can listen to atleast 22 over and over and over again and never get sick of them! I copied the my favorite songs onto another disk and put it in my car's CD player... I haven't put another disk in in over six months. For the amount of great music you'll get, there isn't a better value out there.

This 25-song soundtrack to Julian Temple's biopic of the late Joe Strummer is not as much a retrospective of the punk-rock kingpin as an 80-minute radio show with the ex-Clash leader spinning the dials on influential favorites, such as Tim Hardin's "Black Sheep Boy," Eddie Cochran's 1958 rocker "Nervous Breakdown," and Nina Simone's 1967 version of the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody." Snippets of interviews and Strummer testimonials break up dead air between tracks, which include previously unreleased demos of Clash nuggets like "White Riot" and "I'm So Bored with the USA," as well as Strummer's toned-down solo work with the Mescaleros. But the real treasures lie in the rarely-heard-before: The Clash performing Strummer's "(In The) Pouring Rain" live in 1984, which never made an album; 1988's "Trash City" recorded with Strummer's Los Angeles combo the Latino Rockabilly War; and the 1975 UK-only single "Keys to Your Heart" from his pre-Clash band the 101ers. The latter's ska-and-punk tendencies, obvious influences on English bands like the Pretenders and the Beat, indicate an early direction for the Clash and the sway its leader would hold over the future of music. --Scott Holter

I think this is a great album! It is, of course, a soundtrack strictly speaking but it sounds more like a mix CD from a very cool friend with broad musical tastes. Yet it does all tie together because of who it's about. There are few compillations that cover so much territory and yet flow so evenly. I can't wait to see the film!
Insightful and entertaining eollection.......2007-05-30
It's hard living off the scraps that may come our way now that the great man has gone and I'm sure there will be some pretty crass compilations in days to come! This however is skillfully put together and paints a picture of the man through the music he wrote and the music he loved. The opening studio take of just his voice singing White Riot sends a chill and as the full song commences memories flood back of sweaty Top Ranks and the band blasting away within touching distance of the audience.Following thisThere is a very unusual rendition of Rock the Casbah in Arabic however the most part is taken up by Joe playing songs from his radio show all of which are special. My particular favorite is the U Roy song. Many of you will have bought the 'Front Line' album back in 76 as it was sold at a promotional price of 69p the track that appears here is a version of the original and to my money superior, what a voice!!
I enjoy this album because it flows and it something to keep as an aid to remembering Joe Strummer, the songs are linked by passages of dialogue, a sprightly sounding Topper Headon is just great to hear at last, but most moving is Joe's passage about the ability and power of people to change things. His voice seems to crack with the emotion and intensity of what he is saying and I'm afraid to say I cried again!!

The final album by the Clash's original Strummer/Jones incarnation is also their most inconsistent. There were musical and ideological rifts developing within the band, and it shows: the experimentation is almost as wild as Sandanista!'s (and the biggest experiment is heading away from their punk shiftiness and into a commercial rock sound), but they seem to be enjoying it less. The band's stabs at funk and poetry aren't terribly successful, but it all came together for two massive hits: "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" has the biggest, stupidest, most perfect riff this side of "Louie Louie," and "Rock the Casbah" pulls the band's politics, fine-honed sarcasm, and saw-toothed guitar sound into the service of a dance-floor beat. --Douglas Wolk

Not their best but still pretty good.......2007-04-12
I first listened to this album in 1989 and I'm pleased they reissued it. Naturally, I can't tell the difference between the remastered edition and the original because I haven't heard the latter since 1992.
Elsehow, I think "Red Angel Dragnet" and "Car Jamming" are both good enough to be on every Clash best-of album. So where they hell are they?

A little bit unfocused.......2007-03-25
So, there are three Clash albums that I own, and of the three, I find that "Combat Rock" is the weakest of those. However, The Clash and London Calling are incredible albums. The former is a straight-up punk assault done brilliantly, and the latter is their experimentation pretty much all gone right. The band's fifth album was where the band members started being more conflicted, and this may not be too surprising when listening to this album.
There are of course some definite highlights. Everyone knows the classics "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" and the even better "Rock the Casbah." These tracks are some of the most catchy on the album and have riffs that will be stuck in your head for awhile. There are a couple of other songs worthy of listening to on the record. "Know Your Rights" couldn't have possibly have been a better opener. With the opening lyrics of "This is a public service announcement/with guitars," it sounds like a beginning track of an album, and is a moving listen. The track has the band's political views and with some sarcasm and wit. Then there's the awesome funk of "Overpowered by Funk." I think if someone enjoyed Mick Jones' future project, Big Audio Dynamite, this album might actually be a pretty good introduction.
The rest? It's a bit interesting, but not anything special. There is spoken poetry and attempts at being over the map musically once again, only this time they don't sound as into the experiments as they once were. That kind of makes it disappointing. That being said, "Combat Rock" isn't too bad of an album, and the weaker portion is actually kind of forgettable by comparison to the stronger.
The album is not bad, and it's quite cheap actually, so it wouldn't be bad to try looking out for this one, even if I don't recommend it as your first step into the Clash's backcatalogue. It may be easier to listen to in snippets than in full, actually.
A good album if you're not a Clash fan.......2007-02-01
Why was this the Clash's best selling album? Because it appealed to more than just the true-believers. If you read through the reviews of this album, many of the faithful are saying this is the Clash's worst album, not as good as London Calling, etc. I never liked the Clash much (other than a song here and there), but I did enjoy this album. I think it is more approachable for people who are into more mainstream music (i.e. not punk rockers). I owned London Calling and the Black Market Clash EP (a 10" record, called a NuDisc), and just never warmed to the music. But this album, although it did take a few listens to appreciate, really grew on me. Favorite song from the album? Ghetto Defendant...
Really 4 1/2.......2007-02-01
Such a good album. Many people will say this was the CD that lead to the downfall of The Clash, but I think not. Good lyrics, good music, and an edge not found in their previous work I feel. Know Your Rights is the best opening track ever. I love the variety of music, from the dance beats to the urgent messages to the rock-backed-with-Spanish-vocals. Be open minded. Buy it.

Recycling the 1980s sound has been in vogue lately, so it's no surprise that the producing team known as Nouvelle Vague would find yet another way to mine the nostalgia for the early `80s, post-punk era. They're doing it bossa nova style.
The disc opens with a rendition of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart." It's a charming start, and with a breathy chanteuse on vocals, it's exactly the kind of sound that has some music critics proclaiming (admittedly with a touch of sarcasm) that Nouvelle Vague is the ironic dinner music for the new millennium. Unfortunately, this CD is somewhat less winning as it wears on. "Guns of Brixton" is annoying when done in a loungey mood, and sitting through "Too Drunk to F**k" in the wrong company could certainly ruin the amuse bouche. Nevertheless, the entertaining tracks do outweigh tiresome ones on this release. If this concept sounds like an interesting idea to you, you're bound to get a smile from the execution. --Leah Weathersby

Or is it punk? Anyway I've got a weak spot for lounge music and this may best, edgiest lounge you'll ever hear. Frankly, I'm not all that familiar with most of the originals so I have no idea how much they've been maimed here. All I know is that the vocals are inspired and impossible to ignore.
In Love With This Album!.......2007-06-07
I absolutely LOVE this album! I listen to many different genres of music but I have to say that this album is one of my ultimate favorite cd's! I don't get tired of listening to it! I'm so glad I was introduced to Nouvelle Vague and I have shared this cd with many friend of mine...I then recently purchased their second album Bande A Part, but I was disappointed however, it's not nearly as good as their first...I love 80's music, Bossa Nova, AND Nu Wave, definetly recommend this cd!
Brilliantly different..........2007-04-15
First time through this distinctly "left field" album is likely to leave you a bit confused... laid back interpretations of classic 80's rock tracks served up as nonchalant, bossa-nova driven Anglo-French lounge music. Ridiculous? Well, fortunately not, because in here are some absolute gems - so good that once you've locked into what's going on you'll find them completely irresistible. Which ones depends on where you were at the time but, for me, "Teenage Kicks", "Love Will Tear Us Apart", "We're Only Making Plans for Nigel" & "Just Can't Get Enough" are so beautifully structured and darkly exciting that they're worth the price of the album on its own. But, as you'll see from the other reviews, there's a lot more on offer. Sure, some tracks miss it... but most don't and, insidious and clever, they add up to a brilliant, very different and probably unrepeatable "one off".
Relaxing AND Catchy!.......2007-04-10
Well .... this album combines two of the better qualities I like in a CD. Nouvelle Vague is relaxing -- and extremely catchy! 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' sets the tone from the very beginning ... the comfortable bossa nova rhythm leads to a chorus I found myself whistling along with ... while Nouvellle Vague's catchy take on 'Just Can't Get Enough' had me humming along. I mentioned in another review that I'm not too familiar with the 70s/80s originals ... and because of that I find that this album of covers is a stand-alone, especially for those that are fans of rhythmic bossa nova, samba, and jazz. For me, every song on this album is strong ... As a picky and eccentric listener, this is one of the few times I can play through an entire album and never have to skip a track. It doesn't mean that I don't have favorites on this album -- 'Marian' was the reason I decided to buy the CD. I bought this CD with Bande a Part, because there were several songs on that CD that I felt compliment this one ... but this CD, Nouvelle Vague, is the stronger of two excellent CDs.
Mixed bag gives bossa nova swing to olde inde faves.......2007-01-23
This outing from the cover band Novelle Vague satisfies immensely in many ways, and just plain misses in others. If you are an old timmer who grew up on the originals (like me) then you may find this newly vamped bossa nova approach to 80s post-punk staples a fun filled romp down nostalgia lane. It isn't for everyone, though, and a word of caution to those of you who are missing out by not having heard the originals (all brilliant in their own right) first. The often covered Joy Division classic, "Love Will Tear Us Apart," gives us a warmer rendition than the bleak original, but not better, just different. Of stellar mention is their fun, catchy cover of the DK's hc classic "Too Drunk to..." and the Clash's London-calling era ska-soaked "Guns of Brixton." I will also add that their cover of the insufferably boring "This is not a Love Song" (of disco-era post-Pistols Johnny Rotten PIL fame) gets a great face lift...upwards: Simply awesome!! On the other hand, Nouvelle Vague miss almost entirely on the gothic realm, as best evidenced by their butchering of Andrew Eldritch's "Marian" (off the Sisters of Mercy's first LP, "First and Last and Always") and with their mediocre quickening of The Cure's "A Forest" (which seems to be popular in covering, especially with the techno / rave crowd). Overall this is a good buy, but it does have a couple renditions that deserve a quick skip with a toggle of the fast forward button. A better NV effort is showcased in their "Bande A Part" LP, where they do a fantastic cover of the power-punk-pop classic "Ever Fallen in Love," a former Buzzcocks masterpiece. 4 stars for effort and originality.

What the hell is this? The Clash is one of those bands that are not quite part of reality anymore...they have become a legend not only of music but in the world as a whole. This album says a lot just by the name: sandinista! , its a name that tells the people that there are some serious issues represented on the album, but this is not a motive to be sad ...on the contrary: its a celebration to diferent rythems such as pure rock and roll, gospel, funk, rap, regaee and so much more. I enjoyed it from the first track to the last. Everybody can relate to the lyrics because it they just sing about life- and life is judged in a large amount by politics....but the rythms are so out of this world....it just makes you feel alive and at the same time so happy dispite the fact the the world is so dark and injust....
I love this album....and the clash is one of the best bands this world has ever seen.

Sandinista!-The Clash ****
Punk, Post-punk, Proto-punk,Rockabillie, Dub, Dance, Childrens, Reggea, Doo-Whop, Motown, New Wave, Waltz, it is all here if you name The Clash provides it here. Sandinista! is the album where Joe Strummer and Mick Jones have an identity crisis, and in my opinion it pays off. The Clash try everything here and for the most part they do it well, give or take a few missteps. Mick Jones is using every guitar effects-pedal imagenable to him at this point. Topper and Paul are so out of their minds on herion and everything else at the time that they are just going along with the flow while Strummer or should I say Stalin is taking this band in every direction other then where they started out to go which is fine. You know why The Clash are one of if not the greatest band of all time....it's becasue they dared, they dared to grow and do it. The Clash are what every other band wishes they could be because they knew no boundries and they did what they thought was cool, or good, or what ever other word you want to use. They did what they did because to them at the time it felt right.
This triple album has been turned into a double cd which is great because it saves the consumers money and you dont lose any of the songs. The Clash actually almost got thrown off their record company because they faught to have this sold at a cheaper price then a single album, gotta love that.
The first disc of the album is arguably the better side. The better selection of songs is on this disc and the amount of good songs is greater on this disc. 'The Magnificent Seven' which is magnificent opens the albums and does so superbly. One of the best songs on the album. 'Junco Partner' is a killer reggea track done masterfully by the only white boys that ever did the genre any justice. 'Ivan Meets G.I. Joe' is a dub dance club hit and a great song. It's about when Joe Strummer met a Russian named Ivan and they managed to make a hit song about it. 'Hitsville U.K.' is a great motown/doo-whop song that is about Hitsville U.S.A. only in the U.K. and superisingly it sounds really good, who know the Brits could do Motown? 'Somebody Got Murdered' is one of the best tracks ont he album and easily the best on the first disc. It is very nostolgic of the London Calling album. 'If Music Could Talk' is another great song with a great concept behind it that has to be heard to be appreciated. While clearly that is not all of the songs on the first disc those are the tracks that stand out the most. 'One More Dub' is one song that could have been left off of the album because it is the exact same song as the one before it 'One More Time' exept not as good.
While disc one is the better disc, the second one is still very good. Infact it contains the two best songs on the album and two of the bands all time best. The first is the cover song that opens the second disc, 'Police On My Back' this is one of the very best songs I have ever heard, and that is the original, but The Clash manage to make it even better, and into a true classic and into one of the bands all time best.The vocals are phenomonal, and the arrangement is out of this world. Later on the album offers 'Charlie Don't Surf' which is the second best song on the album. About Vietnam and is just so laid back and wonderful. Clearly one of the top five songs the band has ever made. 'The Equaliser' is a great song as is 'Midnight Log' the songs are quite simillar. 'The Call Up' is a nice song but could have been stronger. 'Washington Bullets' was a minor hit for the band and was a concert favorite and with one listen you will hear why.'Version City' is another one of those songs that are just so good you can't believe the band really came up with it. Now I must say the new alternate version of 'Career Opportunities' is awful. Truly a waste of space on the album. It is turned into a nursery ryhme which kills the whole entire meaning of hte original song.
Sandinista! is a melting pot for all sorts of different musical styles and songs. It is also one of the single greatest pieces of music in the history of rock n' roll. With this album The Clash proved that they were second to none and that they were capable of anything musicaly and taking over the world to become the biggest band in the world would be just around the corner if only they could keep their ego's under control.
Still Subversive, Topical, Brilliant .......2007-02-09
"Sandinista!" is undoubtedly the Clash's most underappreciated and misunderstood album. Issued as their fourth LP in the US, the disk was panned by many critics as undisciplined and unfocused, with many of the 36 tracks unpolished and a handful downright incoherent. Guilty as charged, at least partially. "Sandinista!" is still a brilliant album, with most of the excesses attributable to an explosion of creativity seldom seen.
Coming off the "London Calling" double album, the Clash work most favorably recalled today, Mick Jones, Joe Strummer, Paul Simonon and Topper Headon tumbled headlong into a variety of musical styles and tastes. Straight-ahead rock is leavened with ska, reggae and dub, Trinidadian steel drums, calypso, dance pop and nascent rap, `60s girl group vocals, old time Negro spiritual, soul and funk and whatever else caught their fancy. The group worked long hours in the studio, rehearsing, noodling, brain-storming - and recording - just about everything. Ultimately they ended up with more than enough material for two sides of a vinyl LP. Determined to give the fans "value for money" and in fact engaged in a wasteful battle of wills with CBS/Epic over what the Clash perceived as loathsome promotion efforts, the boys insisted on releasing a 3-disk record featuring everything-but-the-kitchen-sink.
The result is a "Sandinista!" that fans and critics initially (and understandably) found hard to digest, let alone embrace. Twenty-some years later, however, the album remains as subversive and topical and rewarding as any ever made. It is at once entertaining and thought provoking, disturbing and soothing, good natured and dour, confounding and brilliant.
In opening number The Magnificent Seven, Joe Strummer raps to a bass-and-drums dance beat, spitting out such classic lines as, "What do we have for entertainment? Cops kickin' gypsies on the pavement!" and "Wave bub-bub-bub-bye to the boss. It's our profit, it's his loss." As the rhythm section propels the tune, an irresistible call and response chorus goes, "You lot! What? Don't stop, give it all you got." Hitsville UK prefigures Bananarama, featuring Mick Jones' girlfriend at the time, Ellen Foley. An old street bum serves as the device to poignantly lament post-war England, the class system, and other social ills. Somebody Got Murdered is a straight-ahead rocker. As reported by Marcus Gray in his superb Clash biography "The Clash: Return of the Last Gang in Town", it was `commissioned' by the director of the Al Pacino movie "Cruising" - who never returned to claim his song! It is immediately followed by One More Time, a reggae lament influenced by Jamaican DJ-songwriter-producer Mikey Dread, the lyrics a sharp depiction of ghetto poverty and violence. (Mikey Dread would in fact heavily influence the album overall.) An up-tempo romp, Lightning Strikes (Not Once but Twice) lightens the mood with some dance-funk fun.
Mick Jones' joyful, rocking melody on Up in Heaven (Not Only Here) masks lyrics portraying the soul-crushing `towers of London', dreadfully bleak concrete high-rises thrown up by unimaginative city planners to house the post-war poor. Later, Jones' earnest vocals on a cover of the Equals' Police on My Back (written by Eddy Grant) propel the desperate protagonist against a wall of siren-wailing guitars. Effectively following on, the bounce ditty Midnight Log warns the listener, "Working for the devil, you'll have to pay his tax. That means going to see him down among the racks..." Later, on Kingston Advice a vocal chorus echoes a working class theme first established in The Magnificent Seven, the struggle for dignity and redemption amidst oppression, corporate and otherwise: "In these days nations are militant. We have slavery under government. In these days in the firmament, I look for signs that are permanent."
In the universal anti-war brood The Call Up, Joe pleads with his youthful listeners, "It's up to you not to heed the call up. I don't wanna die! It's up to you not to hear the call up. I don't wanna kill!" To Washington Bullets' steel drums and sunny island melody Joe laments America's (and England and Russia's) historic `interference' around the world. Charlie Don't Surf pushes the point further, with a decidedly "Apocalypse Now" anti-Vietnam backdrop. It is Strummer's closing shout of "Sandinista!" that produced the album's title and longest lasting cultural imprint.
Another collaboration stands out: Lyrics penned and sung by Joe's eccentric folk singing pal Tymon Dogg, to a fiddling reel arranged by Mick, Lose This Skin is uplifting, chilling, beautiful, an altogether exhilarating song.
Perhaps the best way to listen to this album is to edit it yourself, i.e. boil it down to a single coherent, more focused, digestible, and clearly themed album. For example, I would open with Magnificent Seven, followed by Hitsville UK, Something About England, Rebel Waltz, Somebody Got Murdered, One More Time, Lightning Strikes (Not Once But Twice), Up in Heaven (Not Only Here), Police on My Back, Midnight Log, The Call Up, Washington Bullets, Lose This Skin, Charlie Don't Surf, and Kingston Advice. I'd close with the rousing The Sound of the Sinners, in which Joe Strummer sings, "After all this time to believe in Jesus. After all those drugs I thought I was him. After all my lying and a-crying and my suffering, I ain't good enough, I ain't clean enough to be him." Powerful stuff and another good example why this is a great album.
Once digested, go back and listen to the rest of the stuff. But yes, Clash fans, I initially would skip Junco Partner, Joe's tongue in cheek anti-drug rap; Ivan Meets GI Joe, an effects laden disco ball groove; The Crooked Beat, Paul's follow-up to Guns of Brixton, which the others inexplicably turned into a reggae song - not at all what Paul intended; the Equaliser, a song type of which Joe did better many times over; the piano driven "Version City", and a half dozen others of lesser merit.
A masterpiece? No. Is this the Clash's "White Album" or "Exile on Main Street"? No. It IS too long, too undisciplined and too unfocused to be called that. If anything, "London Calling" may fit such a characterization. But "Sandinista!" is still a great album nonetheless, capable of stunning the listener with its creative highs. Soak it in and appreciate. You'll listen to "Sandinista!" long after you've mined everything from other albums, Beatles to the Clash.
Cool Confusion...?!.......2007-02-02
More than anything else, "Sandinista!" is the album that sets the Clash apart from the rest of punk, and probably also the rest of rock. There are a couple of clunkers, sure... I don't exactly think that listening to Mr. Gallagher's kid warbling through "The Guns Of Brixton" is exactly essential listening, for instance.
But.
The stuff that's good is among the best that the Clash, or anyone else, ever recorded. And I think that if you're going to attempt something this ambitious, you're going to fall short from time to time. When it works, and when the band--augmented by a few of the Blockheads, a future Mescalero, and a handful of other friends--is firing on all cylanders, it's nothing short of magic.
For every hit, like the irrepresably funky "Magnificent Seven" or "Somebody Got Murdered," there're two that should have been. "Lightning Strikes," "Broadway," "Charlie Don't Surf," and "The Call-Up" (among others) are worthy additions to the Clash canon, while some of the tracks also point the way to Joe Strummer's future work with Latino Rockabilly War and the Mescaleros (and some of the other songs serve as blueprints for other artists' sounds; if Brian Setzer never covered "Look Here," he should, already).
There's something else to the Clash that you didn't get from a lot of the rest of punk, that started to show itself on "London Calling" and is even more pronounced here: there's a warmth and compassion, especially to Strummer's material, that you wouldn't get from, say, the Pistols, the Buzzcocks, or the Ramones.
David Byrne remarked once that when you walk down the streets of most cities, you're assaulted by every kind of music imaginable; he complained that you hardly ever hear that in music. This is the exception to the rule; it sounds like someone took a walk down a thriving main street with their ears open, decided they loved every last bit of what they heard, and wanted to see what it'd sound like all stuck in the blender. So is it uneven? Sure. But if whether or not you're a Clash fan, you owe it to yourself to hear a great band push the envelope. It's a wonderful mess, and a good reminder of all that's possible in music.
A very talented band that maybe got a bit carried away.......2007-01-26
OK, I can relate with people that say the Clash included a lot of filler in this album. Yes, there are some songs that are, well, they aren't even Clash songs. I mean, you got kids singing, you got Jamaicans singing, women singing, etc. And if you get caught up in some of these "different" songs, you start to take a negative view of the album. HOWEVER, let's keep something in mind. When this album was released, it was on three albums. However, it was priced the same as your typical double album. So in effect, you were getting triple the music for not much more. So, when you keep that in mind, you se that you are not being ripped off at all. You are just experiencing an extremely talented band having fun. They play rap, reggae, punk, ska, funk, etc. And if you don't like a song, just forward it, there are plenty to choose from. There are plenty of Clash staples here, like "Something About England," "Somebody Got Murdered," "Lets Go Crazy," "Police on My Back," "Charlie Don't Surf," etc.. Yeah, "Lose this Skin" is a stretch, among others, but like I said, if you don't like it, forward it and keep in mind, for the price, you got a pretty nice deal just the same.

The Clash's label didn't believe this debut would sell in the United States. By the time CBS got around to releasing a stateside version of the U.K. album, the British original had become an import hit. While the U.S. release contains outstanding tracks such as "Complete Control" and "Clash City Rockers," it's still missing "Cheat," "Protex Blue," "48 Hours," and "Deny." No matter which version you prefer, The Clash is a fearsome listen. Joe Strummer reviles the system at every turn, while Mick Jones wields his guitar like a switchblade. Yet even on their debut there are hints of future musical adventures. Junior Murvin's "Police & Thieves" is solid reggae, while "White Man in Hammersmith Palais" expertly interpolates the reggae groove into their punk attack. --Rob O'Connor

God, i'm a music slut. i'll listen to everyone, anything. no matter how commercial or how obscure, hi-fi or lo-fi, hi-brow or lo-brow, it don't matter to me. my ears are always open for business. i feel dirty, but in a good way. listening to this album today was very exciting. it's so different from the gregorian chant cd i was in love with a few hours before. "janie jones," baby, who doesn't love her? and i don't like my boring job, no! and how about the power of that raucous reggae workout called "police and thieves." don't even try to resist it. it's too good. "garageland," is too good, too. "what's my name?" it's fluffy, the human being, baby. great song. and as for "remote control," i don't need parliment sitting making laws all day. do you? of course not. oh, nostalgia. 1977. this was my music then, and i still love it now. thanks for reading my rant.

In the 70's I gobbled up any information I could from magazines like Cream and Rock Scene. Living in middle America it was virtually impossible to hear bands like the Clash. Having read a couple of good things I knew I wanted The Clash. Needless to say it was impossible to find it where I lived and even a couple of record shops said they would not be able to get it. Luckily I found a music shop that was more about instruments but the owner was intrigued by my desire to get this disc and said he would see what he could do. After two months I got a phone call(yes, I was checking with them once a week to).
I don't think I stopped playing the album for two years. I had very high expectations for the album and it exceeded my expectations on every level. I was simply stunned how good The Clash was. But sadly after that they never really achieved the level that this disc did. While some of the follow ups had their moments they just were not as good and I had completely dismissed the Clash by the time Sandinista came out. I remember many friends thinking how great the Clash were when Combat Rock came out and I knew they were just a shadow of their former selves by that time.
Forget London Calling - THIS is the Clash's best.......2007-01-27
London Calling was varied, interesting, and most certainly good. But for my money, this the Clash's best album. But this is far better. Janie Jones, White Riot, London's Burning, Garageland, I'm So Bored with the U.S.A., Cheat, Hate & War, Deny and Career Opprotnities are all pure punk, the kind of punk songs generations of pop-punk bands have tried (and failed) to recapture. Meanwhile, the Reggae/dub cover Police & Thieves is also first-rate. It's too bad this wasn't combined with the U.S. version, though, since that features Clash City Rockers; I Fought the Law; Complete Control and Jail Guitar Doors. If you can find 'em both, pick 'em both up: however, I believe a deluxe edition that combines both albums is in order for a classic such as this, the best punk album ever made.

Oh, I see... issue the original UK version with 4 songs, but leave off the U.S. version 5 or so songs? And you have plenty of room to fit them all (because the U.S. version clocks in at under 44 minutes, so adding 4 more tracks would have been a piece of cake)? Just more scumbag tactics from record companies reissuing CD's. Strummer is rolling in his grave. Just say no, and STOP BUYING the MUSIC from these scam record companies. If you must BUY USED, so they won't get your dough!

Even those who prefer the punch of the Clash's classic London Calling to the sprawl of the subsequent Sandanista! will find plenty of revelation here. Spearheaded by rock journalist Jimmy Guterman, the project accentuates the original album's expansive range through a roster of artists that is transatlantic, transgenerational, and transgenre. Jason Ringenberg (of Jason and the Scorchers) and Kristi Rose transform "Ivan Meets G.I. Joe" into a hardcore country duet, while Katrina Leskanich (of Katrina and the Waves) puts plenty of bounce into "Hitsville U.K." The versions of "The Magnificent Seven" by Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers and "Police on My Back" by Willie Nile remain true to the the Clash's hard-rocking spirit, with the loopy atmospherics of Wreckless Eric's "The Crooked Beat" and the Lothars' multi-theremin arrangement for "The Call Up" exploring the outer fringes of the album's musical adventurousness. BOSTON, Mass. - Sandinista!, recorded by The Clash in 1980, was one of the most ambitious records in the history of rock 'n' roll. According to one of its biggest fans, author and journalist Jimmy Guterman, "It wasn't necessarily their best record, their best-selling record, or even their most enjoyable record, but it's an exciting, sprawling mess that I return to constantly." Guterman liked it so much, in fact, that he took it upon himself to amass a tribute as ambitious as the album itself - 36 tracks by nearly as many different artists.
On May 1, 00:02:59 Records - a label named after a lyric from the Sandinista! song "Hitsville U.K." - will release The Sandinista! Project as a two-CD set, with profits split between two charities - Amnesty International (heartily supported by The Clash) and the Joe Strummer Memorial Forest, which is a division of Future Forests, an organization fighting global warming.
In preparing the Herculean task of commissioning 36 songs to correlate with Sandinista!'s own 36, album producer Guterman called upon artists with whom he'd admired over his years as a journalist. Initial reactions were generally along the lines of "That's the craziest idea I've ever heard." The second reaction, following a brief pause, was "I want in."
Guterman received enthusiastic commitments from such artists as The Smithereens, Camper Van Beethoven, Jon Langford & Sally Timms, Amy Rigby, Katrina Leskanich (Waves), Sid Griffin & Coal Porters, Willie Nile, Matthew Ryan, Stew, Sex Clark Five and many more. Some recorded faithful tributes, other nearly dada-esque abstractions of the songs in question. And many boasted their own organic thread to the Clash, the song in question or both.
For instance, Katrina Leskanich of Katrina & the Waves, seemed a natural for "Hitsville, U.K." After all, her hit, "Walking on Sunshine," shared the same bass line as "Hitsville U.K." which was borrowed from Motown's "You Can't Hurry Love." Jon Langford & Sally Timms from the Mekons took "Junco Partner," originally a James Booker new Orleans R&B hit, and returned it Stateside as only two British punk expatriates can. Sid Griffin, a native of Kentucky who has since migrated to the U.K., tackled "Something About England," a powerful ballad about British deterioration, and turned it into a bluegrass stomp.
Singer/songwriter Matthew Ryan, who had already recorded "Somebody Got Murdered" on his 2001 album Concussion, donated the track intact. Labelmate Willie Nile's streetwise take on "Police on My Back" recorded for this project, also appeared on his own 00:02:59 album released in 2006. Steve Wynn, frontman for The Dream Syndicate and more recently the Miracle3, had been the subject of a double-disc charity record, and got into the spirit with a cover of "If Music Could Talk." And if you ever wanted to hear "The Call Up" performed on theremin, The Lothars provide you that opportunity.
There is even a track from a dedicated Clash cover band, London Calling of Chicago, whose "Lightning Strikes (Not Once But Twice)" displays what Guterman calls "a sharp, spirited cover by a sharp, spirited band."
And there are several more stories to be gleaned in The Sandinista! Project's 36 tracks - "Washington Bullets" by Phil Rockrohr & the Lifters, "Kingston Advice" by Camper Van Beethoven," "Silicone on Sapphire" by The Blizzard of 78 featuring original Sandinista! producer Mikey Dread - all chronicled by Guterman in the liner notes.
Guterman sums it up: "Joe Strummer once said that Sandinista! is 'a magnificent thing. I wouldn't change it if I could.' And now, join us on The Sandinista! Project, in which we change everything on that magnificent record."

RETURN TO SANDANISTA!.......2007-06-09
As difficult to digest as The Clash's original, SANDANISTA!, this tribute album, which covers all 36 songs from the 1980 three album set by The Clash, comes with all the warts and band-aids, ups and downs, of the original work. By far, the best track here, (and one of my favorites from the original album), is Wreckless Eric's, take on The Clash's stoned-out, ska-hazy, "The Crooked Beat", which takes an already bizarre but strangely calming song and turns it into ska from Mars, with obstructing clash-like sound effects cutting into it, like a fleet of flying saucers interfering with your car radio. Also completely satisfying is Willie Nile's point blank interpretation of The Clash's cover of The Equals' "Police On My Back". It's a fiery charged-up cover which knows enough not to twist that which is already perfect. Lou Carlozo's "Living In Fame" sounds like any '60's pop band forced to crash into the far future, with claustrophobic remnants of song that were once a simple melody, and Tim Krekel's "Version City", allows that song to come full circle with what it always wanted to be; an Americana folk junkie praise of railroads.
But too often, many of the songs are tiring novelty numbers that are more cutesy than interperative, and some of the lazy covers are simply bland. It's fun to hear the disco meets cold war, "When Ivan Meets G.I. Joe", as a corny country and western duet, but fun only once. And certainly something more novel could have been applied to "Mensforth Hill", which originally was a song from side one played backwords on side 5. If you're a Clash fanatic, hollowed ground is trampled upon when the climactic, war and peace mongering, "Corner Soul", is interpreted as if it were an Elton John number.
If you're that Clash fan (had all the albums, all the imports, shed a tear when Joe Strummer died), you'll stand behind SANDANISTA!, regardless how you feel about it, as you would behind an impossible, problematic brother. You'll defend it, hate it, love it, and stop just short of throwing the whole damn thing atop a book burning pile. So while this is a worthy project, (aren't all tribute albums?), it is, for me, unfriendly packaging. Designed like the original album, with a faux newspaper, (The Armagideon Times), I take exception to the smug light Seinfeld-like humor of the accompanying comic strip with representatives of two generations, (now and then), discussing SANDANISTA! in a Starbucks. And if you read the 2007 Armagideon Times Update, you may cock a pierced eyebrow and spit everytime the writer attests to generally hating tribute albums, (this is SO tribute album), and labelling side 6 from the original album as "evil", and unlistenable. It's always been my favorite side, and much more contemplative and listenable than the other 5 sides of the original vinyl.
But I digress, as SANDANISTA! is prone to make me do. This tribute album is certainly as worthwhile a listen as the original work which I once called, "London Calling's ugly sister". It opens the door again to the conflicted, chaotic follow-up to the brilliant "London Calling". It causes one to consider Joe Strummer's historic legacy, and his strange creative left turn mess of an album that is SANDANISTA! He's probably out there somewhere, still rebelling against heaven.
One of the best tributes ever!.......2007-06-01
This collection makes even the marginal songs on the original sprawling collection sparkle and reveals the strong songwriting underneath the sonic smog that tended all too often to engulf the originals. Especially amazing, but perhaps to be expected given that The Clash's version of this album followed London Calling, is the very American (blues, folk, rockabilly, jazz, rap, gospel, bluegrass, zydeco) elements underlying these songs, which these assorted and sometimes unknown interpreters bring out big time. Certainly some contributors push the edge (The Lothars's "The Call Up", substituting a wall of theramins (?!) for guitars on what was originallly a strong single, at least in the UK, comes to mind), but this album generally makes The Clash's most challenging effort much more accessible to the general public (i.e., no bong required but may still help) than the original. Joe Strummer would no doubt approve and Mick can weigh in at his leisure; Jimmy Guterman deserves major kudos for conceiving this project.

This box set contains 19 separate CD reproductions of the Clash's original U.K. singles, in paper sleeves with the original single artwork. This might seem a tad ridiculous at first--after all, CDs can hold 80 minutes of music, right? But every possible B-side has been included--songs from 12- and 7-inches, many of those rare tracks only released in other countries--and some of the CDs have as many as eight tracks. One of the earliest (and strongest) criticisms of CD reissues has been the way in which they tend to divorce the listener from the context of original releases; obviously that's not the case here. All of the group's major single statements are here, from their earliest buzz saw manifestos to the latter experiments in dub. If the Clash are indeed the Only Band That Matters for you, don't hesitate in ordering this one. --Mike McGonigal

I AM A HUGE CLASH FAN , HAVING DISCOVERED THEM IN 1982 NEAR THE END OF THEIR JOURNEY . I PURCHASED THIS COLLECTION MORE TO SATISFY MY CURIOSITY MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE . I ENJOYED IT OVERALL , AND EVEN FOUND ONE ADDITIONAL SANDINISTA TRACK [ RADIO ONE ]! I THOUGHT I HAD EVERYTHING .
THE ONLY REASON I DID NOT GIVE THIS 5 STARS IS THE PACKAGING . IN AN EFFORT TO BE ACCURATE , THEY RELEASED EACH SINGLE ON ONE DISC WITH THE ORIGINAL ARTWORK . THAT MAKES FOR 19 CDs . THE FIRST HAS ONLY TWO TRACKS , AND 3:40 MINUTES OF MUSIC . I WISH THEY HAD CONSOLIDATED ! ALSO , THE COMMENTS ARE RATHER INCOMPLETE , AS IN " ARGENTINIAN 7" ". WAS IT A DIFFERENT MIX ? Not to be confused with the one-disc, 18 track collection "The Singles," this is a box set that collects the Clash's UK singles on 19 individual discs that are designed to look like black vinyl. Since it includes not just the original B-sides of the vinyl singles, but also alternate B-sides from releases in different markets, the total length and track listing is quite considerable, 67 tracks total. Since the ordering follows the UK singles releases, not the US ones, there are a few oddities that may seem a bit humorous. For example, "Train in Vain," one of the biggest US hits, is included here only as an alternate B-side to the "Bankrobber" single.
I shouldn't need to tell serious Clash fans that this set has a lot of fine material. Still, I should say that for anyone who is just looking for a career-retrospective of the Clash, you might find the CLASH ON BROADWAY box set, or even THE ESSENTIAL CLASH more user-friendly than the 19 disc format here. The real audience for this set is the Clash completist, who really wants to have the total recorded works of the Clash on CD.
It is true of course that some of the tracks are available elsewhere, and certain tracks may appear on as many as five other discs. Collectors can expect some duplication. Still, it is not true, as an earlier posting implied, that all of this is available elsewhere. I have tried to compile a list of what is distinctive about this set.
(1) The "Capital Radio EP" was a free vinyl giveaway distributed by New Musical Express magazine. It included an interview conducted by Tony Parsons on a moving train. A few minutes of this was included on the STORY OF THE CLASH compilation, but not the two part, 12 minute version included here. The instrumental "Listen" plays through part of the interview, but to hear it without the talk, you have to get SUPER BLACK MARKET CLASH.
(2) The live version of "London's Burning" from the "Remote Control" single was once released on CD on a disc called 1977 REVISITED: CRUCIAL MUSIC, but that has been out of print for years, so it is only currently available here.
(3) This set includes a pair of "dub" remixes of "Armagideon Time, "Justice Tonight" (running time: 4:09) and "Kick it Over" (4:44), presented as two separate tracks from different single releases. That is a little different from the combined "Justice Tonight/Kick it Over" track on SUPER BLACK MARKET CLASH (8: 53) and even more different from the earlier 7:00 version of "Justice Tonight/Kick it Over" on BLACK MARKET CLASH.
(4) "Rockers Galore...UK Tour" is a reworking of "Bankrobber" with Mikey Dread singing new lyrics about touring with the Clash. This is not the same track as "Robber Dub" on SUPER BLACK MARKET CLASH, which lacks the Dread vocal and lyrics.
(5) "Radio One" from the "Hitsville UK" single is a fun Mikey Dread composition with Dread on vocals. The lyrics complain about the lack of reggae music on the BBC.
(6) This set has two single re-edits of "The Magnificent Seven" from the 7" single (3:39) and the 12" single (4:30). Both of these are shorter than the version on the SANDINISTA album (5:29). The longer 12" version is available on the single-disc THE SINGLES CD, but the 7" version is only available on CD here.
(7) There are also two versions of the instrumental "The Magnificent Dance" from the 7" (3:35) and 12" (5:36) singles. The longer version is on SUPER BLACK MARKET CLASH, but the shorter one is only available on CD here.
(8) "Outside Broadcast" is a jaw-dropping variation of "This is Radio Clash" with mostly different lyrics that reference everything from "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" to "Lord of the Dance." Truly unique and a highlight of this set.
(9) "Radio 5" is a dub remix of "This is Radio Clash" with lots of rap style record scratching. It is more conventional than "Outside Broadcast," but worth a listen.
(10) "Long Time Jerk" from the "Rock the Casbah" single runs 5:08, almost twice as long as the version on SUPER BLACK MARKET CLASH (2:57).
(11) "Inoculated City" from the "Should I Stay or Should I Go Single" incorporates a radio commercial about toilets into the middle of the song. Either this is the original radio commercial that the "Flushco" company sued to have removed from the US release, or it is a substitute commercial that was only on the UK single. Either way, it adds a more satiric tone to the song than is found on the version on the US release of COMBAT ROCK
(12) "Straight to Hell" appears here in its short single version, running only 3:51. That is shorter than the version that appears on COMBAT ROCK (5:33) and the still longer version on CLASH ON BROADWAY (6: 50). I am not sure longer is better. I rather like the shortest version.
(13) and (14) The 12" single of "This is England" included two tracks that are only available on CD here, "Do it Now" and "Sex Mad Roar." I think these are better than several of the tracks that did appear on the CUT THE CRAP album.
Obviously, some of the above are only slight variations of familiar tracks, but there are also interesting rarities like "Outside Broadcast" and "Sex Mad Roar." The set goes a long way toward making all the previously uncollected Clash tracks available, though there are still a few exceptions. Around the time of the STORY OF THE CLASH release, the Clash put out a CD-single called "Back to Brixton" that contained three remixes of "The Guns of Brixton" that are not included here. Also, the discography of CLASH ON BROADWAY lists a B-Side called "Radio 6." If that is not a misprint for "Radio 5," then it is missing here.

All of this material (in some form or another*) is available on Clash album releases. This set was released for one reason, and one reason only: so our good friends at Legacy could buy themselves a few brand new Cadillacs. It will sound cliche, but it has to be said that Strummer would *never* have approved this. It's not coincidence that they held off twenty years and then rushed this out in the years after his death. Please don't fall for it.
*for instance, "Armagideon Time" is merely a shorter version of "Justice Tonight/Kick It Over," which is on Super Black Market Clash.

I was disappointed that the 'Erasure Head' promo was omitted from the end of the 'Cost of Living' EP.
