One spin of FutureSex/LoveSounds and it's hard to believe that Justin Timberlake was ever a boy-band barnstormer--no modern-day male artist beats him when it comes to single-minded self assurance or suavity. "SexyBack," the inescapable summer sizzler of a first single off this short and thrillingly unwholesome disc, makes that clear on its own: If there was ever any question about whether sexy was in need of reviving--a doubtful proposition at best, given the sheer volume of JT's gyrating counterparts--he lays it to rest instantly over a small but insistent Timbaland-concocted beat. On that track, Timberlake's appeal is his sweet but newly thuggish-sounding voice--here's a good kid gone bad, and he's determined to convince us of it not only by tossing a few well-timed mother****ers our way but also with such lyrics as "I'll let you whip me if I misbehave." The rest of FutureSex will feel familiar to anyone who picked up 2002's brilliantly funk-flecked Justified: "Love Stoned/I Think She Knows Me," shifts from Michael Jackson-esque paranoid trilling to pulsating guitar rock; "Chop Me Up," a collaboration with Three 6 Mafia and Timbaland, gives up the grit rap-style but still manages to recall both Prince and Stevie Wonder; "My Love," with T.I., mines classic Timberlake territory with meltaway lyrics like "I can see us holding hands walking on the beach/Our clothes in the sand"; and the straight-up but groovy lament "Losing My Way" asks, searchingly, what may be the silliest question a squeal-inducing pop star has ever posed: "Can anybody out there feel me?" JUSTIN IS HOT AND HIS MUSIC HOTTER!!!.......2007-07-06

I must say that I was very surprised that the whole CD was unbelievable... not just tracks Sexy Back and What Goes Around that is now being played in most radio stations. Every song was amazing, with great lyrics and jammin' beats. It just underlines and reiterates the incredible artistic tales of this dude. I will say that this is my first CD from him as I have bought only single tracks in the past - and definitely will not be the last. Thanks Justin, for a totally kickin' and rockin' album. LOOOOOOOVE it. Definitely blasting this on the way to Vegas!

When I first got the CD as a gift, I only listened to the songs I had heard on the radio. One day I decided to sit down and listen to the entire thing. With the exception of maybe two songs, I love the CD. Second time was much better than the first. Good job!!

Perfect for Nickelodeon?.......2007-06-26

I am shocked that the author of this explicit album hosted the Nickelodeon Kids Awards. This is inexcusable, and a huge failing for the network. Kids listen to TV more than they ever did their parents, and what is this teaching them? I am 22 years old and I know that when I watched Nickelodeon ten years ago they never would have allowed such a person to host the awards.

Björk's main asset as a musician is her fearlessness. Since the end of The Sugarcubes and the pop-dance of Debut, she has released progressively more experimental records. But after well over a decade of going further and further out, Volta steps back. Make no mistake; this is Björk, and so it's still fabulously weird. Like 2004's mesmerizing Medúlla and the 2005 soundtrack for Drawing Restraint 9, the songs are blissfully peculiar, with narratives about love, offspring, aliens...you name it. Yet melodically and philosophically, Volta recycles more than it innovates; the driving pulse of "Declare Independence," for instance, reminds us of Homogenic's "Pluto," and the lead single "Earth Intruders" sounds like Post's "Army of Me" on steroids. And just as Medúlla oriented itself around a certain instrument--the human voice--this one concentrates on horns.

Still, the transition between her early work and the avant-garde bender she's been on since Vespertine is pretty harrowing, and it's satisfying to hear Björk revisit her more accessible self. Uber-producer Timbaland pitches in here and there, most successfully on "Innocence," which uses a fat, disjointed pulse to drive the euphoric vocals forward. Elsewhere, the hyperactive sitar sample on "I See Who You Are" provides texture for the song's theme of enjoying each other while there's still "flesh on our bones." And "Pneumonia" makes fantastic use of the horn section with a soft arrangement that compliments the song's lyrical melody.

So while it's a bit of a stall, Volta is a lovely pause. It reminds us how much we appreciate the laboratory of Björk's imagination, but also how much we missed her back when she was just goofing around. -Matthew Cooke

A Solid, If Disjointed, Release by Björk.......2007-07-13

From the gothy punk of KUKL to the arty rock of The Sugarcubes, from the electronic pop of Post to the dark spaciousness of Homogenic, it has always been difficult to predict Björk's musical direction. So her last project before this one, an experimental soundtrack for the film Drawing Restraint 9, gave little hint as to what we should expect from Volta.

Then, a few weeks before the Volta's release date, Earth Intruders drops as the album's first single. Marching, clean-edged beats bobble alongside the singer's quirky and distinct voice. The track thumps along with a poppy passion that Björk has not exhibited since the early 1990s. On Earth Intruders, Björk is joined by famed producer Timberland and his signature tread covers most of the song. His presence is unmistakable as heavy beats and waving keys clearly mark the producer's influence. If there is a radio hit on Volta, this is it.

Earth Intruders is the album's opener, but by the time the second tracks hits, it is clear that the preceding song does not accurately depict the sound of the album. This is because Volta is ever-changing. It is an album of different moods. It is an album of bouncing rhythms, an album of screaming manifestos, and an album of introspective awarenesses.

As poppy as Earth Intruders is, Volta is not an album that looking to get a nod of approval from the radio masses. The slow climb of the third track, entitled Dull Flame of Desire, affirms this. Once again, Björk is collaborating with another artist; vocalist Antony Hegarty. Antony's singing, hollow and androgynous, complements Björk's sweet cries perfectly and the shared cadence of the two singers is punctuated and underlined by steadily growing beats built by Lightning Bolt drummer Brian Chippendale.

Other guests on the album are just as noteworthy. Mark Bell, whose band LFO helped launched the famed Warp Records in 1990, makes an appearance on Volta. As does session drummer Chris Corsano. Icelandic poet Sjón lends his pen to the track Wanderlust. Min Xiao-Fen's pipa playing adds a beautiful delicacy to I See Who You Are. And Toumani Diabaté's kora plucks its way to the forefront of Hope.

While many of the songs on this album are solid in their own right, Volta is a disjointed affair overall. Perhaps due to the diversity of the guest artists, the songs on this album contrast each other to a high degree. The angelic harmonizing of the aforementioned Dull Flame of Desire, for example, is abruptly knocked off track when the follow-up track, Innocence, begins to romp. Later, the electro-pump of Declare Independence drops out in favor of the significantly softer My Juvenile. Björk has released past albums that were just as diverse. Debut and Post, for example, both moved through a number of different sonic explorations. But the songs on these albums were arranged in such a manner that the variety worked. There are thematic elements that run through Volta; the tribal rhythms, layered wind instruments, and Björk's vocal prowess. And all of these pieces reprise often enough to tie opposing tracks together, but the thread is thin when compared to similar achievements on past albums. Still, the strength of the individual songs outweigh any stress caused by the disruption of flow and Volta, while not Björk's best album, is certainly one to consider picking up.

Doesn't quite cut it.......2007-07-11

I already didn't have huge expectations for this album after disliking its predecessors Medulla and Vespertine, but I at least found that Volta had five tracks that were to my liking, which is more than I liked on the two CD's before it combined (thus I would consider it a step up). While the hit track "Earth Intruders" may suggest that Volta is a return to the styles of Post or Homogenic, few other songs on the album are similar to this piece, and instead are divided among all sorts of variety. Other reviewers have commented on the fact that there is a bit too much variety on Volta, and I would agree with this since basically all of the songs sound like they belong to entirely different genres (aside from the fact that many of them have in common the usage of a strange-sounding chorus of horns, and of course Bjork's voice). I was disappointed to not find more of the neat sound effects and beats like the ones used in the albums before Vespertine and Medulla, although she does get some good jamming beats going in the backgrounds of Wanderlust, Vertebrae by Vertebrae, and my personal favorite song on the album Declare Independence. This track is strangely noisy for Bjork, since she practically screams with distorted vocals overtop of a largely appealing array of a low-toned electronic noises that come together with a thumping beat to make Declare Independence a fun, rebellious tune that is commendable for its energy as well as its sound effects. Other stand-out tracks include the first four, although I find the otherwise wonderfully melodic The Dull Flame of Desire to be slightly brought down by the absurd vocals of a man which the booklet refers to as Antony. He may take some getting used to, although I eventually grew to tolerate his inclusion in the song. He also offers his voice for the last track My Juvenile, which I disliked. Earth Intruders is an instant classic with its strange lyrics and good percussion and synthesizers, and is considerably longer on the album than it is on the radio, including some noises at the end which are either foghorns or instrumental horns made to sound like foghorns. Wanderlust also has oddly catchy lyrics, and Innocence has a beat which apparently consists of a thump noise as well as the sound of a man's agonized grunt. Overall I'd give this album three stars, and although it wasn't quite good enough for me to buy, it has mildly restored my faith in Bjork and I will continue to listen to her future albums in hopes of finding another gem like past CD's Debut, Post, and Homogenic.

Concentrated goodness, expansive ok-ness.......2007-07-09

When you look at the Volta cover art, you see the overwhelming big blue feet/Technicolor hen/tongue/egg statue thing surrounded by a reddish hue that fills up the rest of the cover space. That's Volta right there, I think-- at points just too much wonderful ("wanderful", as Bjork brilliantly sings on "Wanderlust") Bjork to take, and at other points, mostly saturating the second half of the album, not enough to make a remarkable song.

To accuse Bjork of uneven distribution isn't a new thing-- a lot of her albums have intensely strong singles and sparser supports, but on Homogenic and Vespertine the barer, simpler songs tended to balance out the rhythm of the records and ended up being profound and memorable stand-alone songs: I'm thinking here especially of the longing "Unravel" on Homogenic that transitioned Joga into Bachelorette (quite a task to buffer Bjork's most operatic & dramatic songs, ever) and songs like "Frosti" (relaxing you after "Pagan Poetry") or "An Echo, a Stain" from Vespertine. Volta, conversely, is definitely frontloaded.

"Earth Intruders," like I mentioned above, is that colorful statue. It's so good, but so much! The drums are playful, Timbaland's steamrolling, buzzing contribution adds a sharp edge, the opera voice is original and haunting, and the lyrics are-- come on-- pretty awesome, alternating from sincere, agonized testimonies like "I have guided my bones through some voltage, and love them still" to a chorus only Bjork could provide, a dream of muddy revengers from nature wielding weapons, like "Army of Me" gone native, from Post-al to pagan. I was exhausted after this song.

"Wanderlust" is excellent too; light and skimming, it's the most conventional pop song on here, using the much-talked-about horns to exciting nautical set-sail effect. "Inhabitants" becomes "habitants" in Bjork-language, and check out the cool displacing effect of the two vocal streams when she sings "I receive its embrace aboard my floating house...house." You can't settle down when listening to this song, precisely her point.

"The Dull Flame of Desire" digs deeper on the horns, which intone somberly throughout the duet with Antony. Power ballad is what leaps to mind, weirdly. I like this song very much, but that's in spite of its length. A lot of people have mentioned how the terrific drums don't come to the forefront until the last few seconds, and I agree--it's like you just get to thinking how incredible and intense the drums are making the piece, and it's about time too, when-- BAM-- the song finishes.

That BAM is literal-- "Innocence" has a dominating principal beat that sounds like a rubber band snapping over a male grunt. There are also sonic squiggles and bells and whistles helping the best layered singing Bjork does on the record-- like "Who is It" from Medulla or "Alarm Call" from Homogenic, this one's African-chantlike, bombastic and exuberant. Can't wait for the video.

I've already greatly exceeded the length of the standard Amazon review, so I'll have to summarize quickly-- but again, after "Innocence," the album does fall off. "I See Who You Are" is pretty with lovely strings but eventually ponderous. She's recycled "Hunter Vessel" on the dark horn march "Vertebrae by Vertebrae," which dips into some serious feminist territory with vague gestures to women's spines and the moon. I kept on thinking how cheesy this song would be if her strong voice wasn't so up to the task; coming from her, power-howls at the moon give you genuine goosebumps. "Pneumonia" is touching but unfocused, and "Hope" has a neat "virlwind" of an opening but then loses itself in complex political narrative. "Declare Independence", I think, would be absolutely amazing live, kind of PJ Harvey "Kamikaze"-like, but (I can't believe I'm saying this, I feel old) overly intense just to listen to, say, on your computer iTunes.

3/5, but the 3 stars are well-earned. Thank you Bjork! I'm off to raise my flag-- higher, higher.

It Grows on You.......2007-07-08

I've been a Bjork fan for some time, and was disapointed when I first listened to Volta. It's definitely a departure from her more melodic early albums. However, I have to say it has grown on me. It must be difficult for a very creative person like Bjork to continually discover/invent unique forms of expression and avoid becoming an imitation of herself.

Boring.......2007-07-06

I too used to be a big Björk fan. From Debut to Vespertine, she only got better. Vespertine was a real masterpiece. Volta is OK, Earth Invaders is a good song, but most of the other songs are just boring and, having other albums to listen to, why would I bother with this one? It's sad, although after Medulla I didn't expect much from Björk. I totally agree with the reviewer who wrote that this album is as annoying as its cover art.

Some music is celebrated for its elegant subtlety; Pink's slams you over the head. Four albums in, she's not changing her formula. I'm Not Dead touches on bulimia ("Stupid Girls"), war-mongering politicians ("Dear Mr. President"), teen angst ("Conversations With My 13 Year Old Self," "Runaway"), overheated pickup artists ("U + Ur Hand"), and gross materialism ("I Got Money Now"). None of it, in other words, is for featherweight listeners. Then again, none of it suits eggheaded college tastemakers either. Where this translates, then, is with those willing to man up and embrace what makes Pink Pink: her spellbinding ability to render rebelliousness in all the many colors of the rainbow. Neil Young-inspired acoustic guitar is sketched into "The One That Got Away," but it's just as quickly scribbled over by Joan Jett-style ranting (on "Long Way to Happy") and Janis Joplin/Joss Stone-fueled howling (on "Who Knew"). Even R&B gets its turn ("I Got Money Now"). The album also includes appearances from the Indigo Girls, who duet on "Dear Mr. President," and Pink's father, who joins for the hidden track "I Have Seen The Rain." Pink pulls all of this off, and probably without even breathing hard. She's not dead. --Tammy La Gorce

Fantastic discovery!.......2007-06-28

I never was a fan of hip hop/dance/rap music, so I never really paid attention to Pink. I'll be the first to admit that was a big mistake. I heard "Who Knew" on the radio and was absolutely bowled over! I immediately went out and bought the album based on that one song. Turns out the album is full of fantastic musical gems. I didn't realize she changed her style to more of a rock/pop style. "Stupid Girls" is a great social statement (and totally made me think of Paris Hilton). "Who Knew" is one of my favorite songs of all times. "Long Way to Happy" is so catchy and awesome, it's my 2nd fave on the album. "Nobody Knows", "Dear Mr. President" and "I Got Money Now" are all great slowed down songs. I almost cried the first time I heard "Dear Mr. President". Extremely political and so very true, beautifully sung and deserves a lot of attention. "U + Ur Hand" and "Leave me Alone" are fun and full of attitude.

I'd like to add that not only is this album awesome, but I finally found out that Pink is an incredible vocalist and performer. Based on that, I ended up buying Misunduztood and there are several songs on that album I loved as well. I just wish I had noticed Pink long before this! Buy the album, you won't be disappointed!

"Stupid Girls" and "U + Ur Hand" got the attention but "Who Knew" and "Nobody Knows" really are great standouts as well. Pink has great vocals and she's versatile (her acoustic songs sound great as her pop/rock songs). Pink is really talented and I'm really late in finding this out. But I will be checking out her "artistic" debut "M!ssundaztood" (her proper debut was "Can't Take Me Home"). The best thing about this album is that it has personality. I know that sounds silly but what I mean it's fleshed out. It's probably the most entertaining album I've heard all year.

Don't be put off by the explicit rating, and don't buy it from Amazon despite the great price. You owe it to yourself to go to the store and buy this album right now. Pink finally deserves to be lauded as an artist.

There's nothing like a Gwen Stefani disc to rip you from your pop comfort zone and, in the pleasantest way possible, knock you around a bit. On The Sweet Escape, the blows arrive roughly every four minutes: a yodel ("Wind It Up") skitters off ceremoniously before the title track, featuring Akon, catches you off guard with its infectious yelps of "Woo-hoo, YEE-hoo!," and the pouty rap of "Orange County Girl" has barely petered out before we're vectored somewhere back toward the '80s with the indie rock-ish "Early Winter." That the sound of these songs doesn't follow a formula--that they pounce wherever they please, without regard for genres or decades--is no big whoop; this is Gwen Stefani, after all, and her up-for-anything, play-along fans probably wouldn't have it any other way. More surprising is the extent to which Stefani inserts what seems to be her genuine self into the music: "4 in the Morning," a Madonna-reminiscent midtempo groover, drops the wide-eyed Betty Boop pose and basks in a rarely plumbed depth of feeling ("I give you everything that I am / I'm handing over everything that I've got / 'cause I wanna have a really true love," she sings with something like sincerity). A single track later, she's owning up to motherhood in the sexiest, most unapologetic way possible: "I know you've been waiting," she pants, "but I've been off making babies / And like a chef making donuts and pastries / It's time to make you sweat." Lyrics don't get much cleverer than the ones to "Breakin' Up," a kiss-off disguised as a dropped cell phone call, and sounds don't get much swizzier than the ones on "Now That You Got It." Which is to say that Gwen's got game--as much as on Love.Angel.Music.Baby, if not more--and that anytime she's prepared to hollaback, the world will do well to listen. --Tammy La Gorce

I love this album. Every now and then, I find a top40 album worth buying. The singing is creative. The beats infectuous. 'Sweet Escape' is pure ear candy. Anyone buying the album expecting No Doubt will be disappointed, but it holds up on it's own.

Currently, it's in the CD changer and will remain there for awhile. If I were blind, I'd still love Gwen's music. Thank Heavens I can see. Gwen looks like someone who'd be fun to Kiss.

much better album than lamb, imo. More sythenic and current, more confident. She doesn't seem as nervous and unsure of herself on this one. Of course this isn't in the same league as her stuff with no doubt. Don't even bother if you want another return of saturn, but you should have learned that the first time around. This is supposed to be a fun, guilty pleasure.

Of course it does come across as a bit calculating and jerky. It has plenty of variety. It's just fun, dumb pop music. Excellently done dumb pop music. And it sure beats Fergie.

I don't think that this Album is better than L.A.M.B, but I still think that it is good. I am a little disipointed that the songs don't sound like the 80's and 90's like L.A.M.B did. I think that guy named ROCKET or wutever who rote about this Ablum is STUPID!!!! With a capital S. Wonderful life is not the only good song on the Album! There si Early Winter, 4 in the morning, Yummy, Flourescent, and more! And what does that guy mean that Gwen lost all of her fans 21 and up? That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard! My teacher (27) loves Gwen? so does my sister (25) my mom (43) and eaven our nabor (50)! I mean come on! All in All this is a great Album that you will love

I bought this CD for the song "The Sweet Escape" which I love. The rest of the songs are ok.

ESCAPE from "The Sweet Escape".......2007-07-01

I am a huge Gwen Stefani & No Doubt fan but, I must admit that I sat in shocked horror as I listened to this CD for the first time. I didn't care much for her last CD either, but it sounds like a masterpiece next to "The Sweet Escape". I have followed Gwen's career from the beginning and have always loved her bold and confident style, but she is starting to appear insecure and fearful of becoming irrelevant in the ever-changing musical landscape. "The Sweet Escape" seems like something she released just to keep her name "out there" while she focuses on her child & family. Furthermore, collaborations are great (like "Southside" with Moby) but, Gwen seems to have gone overboard with too many collaborations with the "hot" artists/producers of the moment. It would be nice if "The Sweet Escape" was a little more "Gwen" and a lot less outside input which creates a disjointed effect. I still love you Gwen but, I hope your future musical endeavors are filled with more of the substance and originality you are known for.

One can never accuse the Chemical Brothers of consistency. We Are the Night continues their eclectic electronica approach even though the big-beat groove of the title track remains their digital calling card. Spotted with a minimalist keyboard pattern, vocal non sequiturs, and sampled sound effects, the infectious groove of "We Are the Night" eventually evolves into the monotone-chanted dance chorus of "We are the night skies/We are the bright lies," recalling Brian Eno circa Here Come the Warm Jets. However, for every catchy electro-dance, there's a tune that leaves you scratching your head. What to make of the novelty song "The Salmon Dance" is anybody's guess, though you might find some illumination in a salmon recipe on their Web site. With fractured nursery-rhyme lyrics that are sung like an off-color Sesame Street rap, it will drive you up the wall--or at least toward the skip button. Then there's Midlake singing the trancey ballad "The Pills Won't Help You Now," making the Chemical Brothers sound like a sci-fi version of Coldplay. Retro-analog synthesizers dominate, with the electro-grooves of "Das Spiegel," "Burst Generator," and "Saturate," which builds on a Kraftwerk-forged metal framework coupled with storming sampled drums. The circuits of '70s techno-pop artist the Normal are re-soldered on "Do It Again." With Ali Love singing the title-track chorus, it's built to be a summertime anthem akin to Tag Team's "Whoomp! (There It Is)," albeit robotically chilled. --John Diliberto

With DJIN DJIN (pronounced "gin gin"), Angelique Kidjo returns to the soul of Benin - and, for the first time, shares it with a cast of all-star guests, in a marriage of cultures that has significance far beyond music alone. Inspired by the traditions and culture of Kidjo's native Benin in West Africa, the title of the album refers to the sound of the bell that greets the beginning of a new day for Africa.

The diversity represented by Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel, Josh Groban, Carlos Santana, Joss Stone, Branford Marsalis, producer Tony Visconti, and the others who contribute to DJIN DJIN speaks to the lesson of this project: For all the differences in the music of our time, the river of Africa flows through it all.

The key was to build DJIN DJIN on a Beninese foundation. The heartbeat, then, comes from percussionists Crespin Kpitiki and Benoit Avihoue, both members of Benin's GangbÃ© Brass Band. Details of their country's rhythmic heritage, specific in some cases to individual villages, feed the rhythms they lay down throughout the album.

To this mix Kidjo welcomes players whose backgrounds complement the idea of DJIN DJIN: drummer Poogie Bell, known for his work with Erykah Badu and Chaka Khan; funk keyboard wizard Amp Fiddler, whose credits include Prince and George Clinton; Larry Campbell, whose multi-instrumental work has adorned the music of Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, and Paul Simon; Senegalese bass giant Habib Faye, a fixture with Youssou N'Dour; guitarists Lionel Loueke, from jazz legend Herbie Hancock's band; Romero Lubambo, a Brazilian wonder whose credits include Diana Krall and Dianne Reeves; Joao Mota, from Guinea-Bissau and kora master Mamadou Diabate.

Angelique Kidjo's amazing whether she's covering Hendrix in "VooDoo Child" or singing West African tunes. Her roots are much wider than just her country of origin. It'd be hard for me to name a favorite among these gems. I love the people she's selected to work with. "Gimme Shelter" with Joss Stone may be the kind of duet that's going to propel her right up to the top of the charts where she belongs. Smart move, lady, for sure, but I also love the songs where Angelique sings her own music alone.

Soulful West African soul.......2007-06-22

Angelique Kidjo is one of those rare artists who has the Midas touch. No matter who she's performing with, no matter what she's performing, she makes beautiful music. While "Djin Djin" can be considered one of her more mainstream albums, she still proudly shows her African roots. In a sense,it's not surprising it's sold alongside coffee at Starbucks; "Djin Djin" is as potent as a cup of steaming java.

The opening "Ae Ae" is anthemic;it's a power ballad in which Kidjo calls on her fellow Africans to be self-sufficient. The title track is a jazzy collaboration with Alicia Keys and Branford Marsalis. It's Benin meets the Big Easy. Kidjo does an amazing cover of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" with Joss Stone. The '60s British Invasion gets an African makeover,transforming it into a tribal rave-up. Kidjo and smoky-voiced Peter Gabriel complement each other in "Salala." A thumb piano gives "Senamou" a deeply African flavor. "Sedjedo", a duet with reggae heir Ziggy Marley, doesn't quite work. Marley is relegated to the sidelines. However, Kidjo's rousing singing saves the piece. The same goes for "Pearls." Josh Groban's operatic voice is unsuited to the style of the song. It's Afropop meets Latin rock (since Carlos Santana plays the guitar),not the Three Tenors or Il Divo. Kidjo's amazing singing again saves the song from becoming a novelty song. In "Papa","Arouna","Awan N'La","Emma" and "Mama Golo Papa" Kidjo shows she doesn't need collaborators. She's still going strong since her debut in 1990. She covers difficult issues such as marital conflict and divorce soulfully. Finally, in "Lonlon" Kidjo transforms Ravel's annoying and overplayed "Bolero" into rousing,toe-tapping Afropop. Instead of being filler or a song worth skipping, "Lonlon" serves as a grand finale.

Angelique Kidjo is accomplished,as a person and as an artist. She is a UN Goodwill Ambassador;she has her own charity,Batonga. In Bono's guest-edited issue of "Vanity Fair" about Africa, Harry Belafonte praises her activism. Angelique Kidjo's music is truly angelic. "Djin Djin" is a great introduction to her music, and is a perfect mainstream introduction to African music. It's as rousing and flavorful as a good hot cup of coffee.

This is my first introduction to any of Angelique Kidjo's music. I bought this compact disc for myself as a birthday present based on the reviews it has received and listening to the short musical segments found on Amazon.Com.

After recently listening to "Djin, Djin" on a 4 hour road trip, I feel in love with the music & lyrics! The music is fantastic and varied from song to song.... Angelique Kidjo is phenomenal as an artist. I also enjoyed the musical guests performing on "Djin, Djin" too. This compact disc is perfect as background music while long distance driving, at home relaxing, during dinner parties, etc.

Not as good as Black Ivory Soul - but still enhoyable.......2007-06-11

This is a good release, with many guests on it, but not quite as accessable as the Black Ivory Soul CD. However, it will get you up and moving.

Excellent album! I almost didn't buy this CD it was in the used bin and I figured I like his last CD Aural & Hearty so it was worth giving it a shot. I hadn't even heard of this album or Mocean Worker releasing anything new. I was totally suprised to find an excellent buy. This is what new jazz should sound like! Not the usual crap like Norah Jones or all the typical pop friendly, adult comtemporary s**t that's flooding the airwaves. My God what the f**k? People burn all those albums and buy something from a real artist like Mocean Worker. This album is just amazing! It reminds me of music from a jazz era forgotten. It's got blues, doo-wop, loads of jazz and an electronic (trip-hop, downbeat) background with slight touches of samples like Nina Simone doing Blackbird all blended together to create an excellent CD. It's an amazing album and it's infectious as soon as you pop it in it makes you wanna get up and groove to the first beats of Chick a Boom Boom Boom. Definitely worth checking out.

I origonaly heard 'Chick a boom boom boom' on a local Jazz station & had to write down who it was so I could get it ASAP.
Jazzy/Funky-I do love the entire CD-which is a rare deal in a world of 1 or 2 good track's with a lot of filler.

I have a new favorite artist.......2005-03-16

The first time I heard "Right Now" on the radio,I stopped and thought, "What is this? This is cool." It seemed to be a blend of blues/jazz/techno. I'd never call myself a techno fan, but with the blues/jazz stylings, this just WORKED. I immediately went out to buy the CD, but no one had it. So, I ordered it and waited. The whole time I was waiting, I was thinking, "Man, I hope the rest of the CD is as cool as 'Right Now'." When I was finally able to pick it up, I immediately threw it in the CD player and smiled. It was. As with most albums, there are a some tracks I like better than others, but one thing I can say is that they're all different. This isn't bubblegum pop where every song sounds the same. Some tracks are fast, some are slow, but they're all interesting. I highly recommend this album, if you can find it.

Justice is the moniker of the Paris-based production duo Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay. Their approach to crazy-quilt dance-pop hybridism is infectious, if a tad off-putting here and there. The duo rose to fame due to an MP3 single and super smart video for the excellent, kiddy-chorused house-pop number "D.A.N.C.E." in 2007, and they soon thereafter signed to the suitably named label Banger. They manage to make really silly and fun music in a way that frequently comes off in a pretentious manner. It's ridiculous to name your album after a symbol, especially if it's †. This is not meant derogatorily. Really. Justice does appear to be that rare breed of dance artist equally capable of stimulating the body and the mind, though neither Richard James nor the Basement Jaxx need fear this act. After just one listen to "Waters of Nazareth," it's very difficult to avoid wondering "how the hell did they mix and match noise and pop so beautifully" while also dancing furiously. --Mike McGonigal

Let There Be Justice!.......2007-07-10

If the opening seconds of Justice's debut album, " ," don't tell you a thing about what you're in store for, you aren't listening. The mudded brass come marching in like they are coming to destroy, and in a way they are. Justice is a dance/electronica group, to be sure, but to label them as such is travesty in and of itself. Like that imperial death march, Justice is here to destroy. In this case, they have come to demolish your preconceived notions about what dance music is and what it can be. Now, until recently I have avidly campaigned against the genre which I feel is cluttered with mundane "artists" who rely on bad samples and horrendous loops to captivate a somewhat dimwitted audience. My opinion is slowly starting to change as I am introduced to artists who are challenging this perception. Justice is one of them.

From the opening track to the very last second of "," I found myself, not only captivated, but amazed, entertained, and energized. Justice comes off as a bull charging towards its victim, with so much momentum and energy that attempting to slow it down would be a fruitless endeavor. Their songs are constantly changing, never relying on a single loop or phrase for too long. And these songs are not lite, easy-listening electronica songs either. They're harsh and brash, with the mids turned up too high for comfort. It's not your average dance album, it is a revelation!

"Let There Be Light" begins with a near-unlistenable melody, but adds in drums, a thumping bassline, and so many cuts and glitches that you'll be in love with it before you know it. It concludes with an absolutely awesome composition that harmonizes synths with synths in a way that sounds like it'd be better suited for the closing credits of a Super Mario Bros. game than a dance record. "D.A.N.C.E." is one of the few songs on " " with actual vocals, and while I found them a bit childish and annoying at first, I was shocked to find the song stuck in my head hours after I first encountered. The song sounds like the Jackson 5 on methamphetamines, if only for the lyrics, "Do the D.A.N.C.E., stick to the B.E.A.T." The disco-esque strings and sing-along quality of the song make the song a sure-fire hit, which is probably why it is the album's first single.

Elsewhere on the album, there's the cut-filled "New Jack," the completely overpowering, yet satisfying "Phantom Pt. I" (and it's more audience friendly second part), and the 100% guilty pleasure "The Party." The latter features such terrible rap-lines as "Let's get drunk and freaky-fied," and if you actually find yourself liking it, then you may want to see if pigs grew wings. It's the one low point on an otherwise flawless album.

The best part about "" is the fact that it never gets boring, an attribute clearly made possible by the group's insistence on keeping the songs fresh around every corner and their refusal to use one loop or riff for any extended period of time. The quality of the songs is through the roof, and the genres touched upon in each song are too numerous to mention. While "D.A.N.C.E." is clearly your crowd-pleaser, songs like "Stress" (which envokes serious Requiem for a Dream soundtrack memories) and "Waters of Nazareth" are designed for the sole purpose of making you nod your head in approval while simultaneously scratching it, thinking "What the heck am I listening to?" " " is an achievement in electronic music that should be listened to by fans and naysayers of the genre alike. Finding a true definition for the music contained on this album is impossible, so I'll just call it this: amazing!

Recommended for fans of electronic music and anyone who wants to experience shock and awe firsthand.

AMAZING DEBUT! (4.6 stars).......2007-07-10

I'll say it. The electronic/dance record of 2007 has arrived. The long-awaited, super amazing full length from French duo, Justice, breathes life once again into your neighborhood dance floor and come June 11, 2007, also in your favorite record shop. Justice is made up of Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Auge, two men that have become famous for mixing a bit of religion with their incredible and righteous beats. It seems wherever they turn up, they make any club/festival into their own private house of worship, and the faithful have been eating it up. Barely visible during their live sets, the two stand behind their giant glowing cross that adorns the decks. Its an ironic twist on the idea of a religious experience. After hearing this album in full, you might be a follower of what they've laid down as well.

Mixing some Daft Punk with early Chemical Brothers gets you about halfway there. Cross's strength is a flawless mix of dance and electronic styles, delivered with amazing production and energy to spare. It follows on the heels of a few well received singles, like 2006's Waters of Nazareth (which is smartly included here). Also catching buzz has been their fun graphically inspired video for the lead single, D.A.N.C.E. The song is great, with or without said video, it's a weird hybrid of Daft and Michael Jackson, with some children's vocals thrown in. It will be one of your favorites this summer, if isn't already.

The really amazing thing about this record is that it holds up through the entire tracklisting. I might have to go back to Underworld's Beaucoup Fish for the last time that happened (ok, maybe Milo's Destroy Rock n Roll, or MSTRKRFT's The Looks). It opens super strong with (appropriately titled) Genesis. As the perfect opener, it's a pulsing surge of fuzzy beats mixed with some over the top drama and a setup found usually in hollywood blockbuster movies, not dance records. never loses steam after Genesis fades into Let There Be Light, in fact it might even get stronger as the record chugs along. I found stuff like Phantom, The Party and New Jack, being as enjoyable as the singles. Stress, a song which backs the final third of the record, is unbelievably grand and just as in-your-face awesome. Vocals and vocal samples on Cross are kept to a minimum, appearing on just a few tracks, The Party (featuring foul-mouthed bass gal, Uffie), D.A.N.C.E., and DNVO. Its a perfect amount of vocals, in fact, everything on this record is pretty much spot on, even the T-Rex-esque album art is terrific.

If you like house/electro/club/Miami bass/trance/breakbeat/dance...whatever, it really doesn't matter. Justice aims to please, and happens to do much more than that. A must have.

In the most dignified way possible, "Dignity"--the title track to this fizz-bomb of a dance-pop disc--sends a disgusted eye-roll and a flagrant puh-lease to underwear-eschewing celebutantes everywhere: "You'd show up to the opening of an envelope," sings Duff, who hangs onto her signature sweetness despite having entered full-on diss mode. "It's not news when you've got a new bag/It's not news when you're looking your best/Come on, give it a rest." Well said. And sung. Not that calling out the phony and the full of it is what Duff, or Dignity, is all about. Mostly, the disc is a beat-studded chronicling of an incredibly healthy 19-year-old psyche: On "Happy," she's happy despite an ex's attempts to make her miserable; on "With Love"--maybe her catchiest, most grown-up song to date--she's willing to accept rejection as long as kindness plays a role in its delivery. Musically, with the help of groove-conscious producers like Tim & Bob and Will.i.am, Duff edges ever closer to adult sensibilities; her goofball Lizzie McGuire days seem far behind. Great CD, Uplifting message.......2007-07-11

I read somewhere that this was her fourth disc, I had never listened to an entire cd by her before, but the title got my attention, and it is the theme for the whole album, there are no out of place tracks here, she helps you to think, and makes the tracks electronic, which I can work out to on the treadmill, but I must say the standout song on this cd is No Work All Play, she sounds wise beyond her years, expressing that life is about more than just having a good time, having balance and getting to know yourself is more important. She encourages the listener to keep trying, even when it is difficult at times, the journey will help a person gain wisdom and grow stronger. Thank you Ms. Duff, it was an encouraging ride

i love all of hilary's cds, but this one is my favorite! my favorite songs are "dignity", "with love", "gypsy woman", and "happy". all the songs are great, but those are the best. "dignity" automaticly made me think of paris hilton (who i think is a spoiled brat) and "happy" is the song i would assoiate with a break up to say that you are so over the guy. it's words are like she's talking to someone (most likely Joel) "i'm happy and i know that makes you mad/after all the things you put me through/i'm finally gettin' over you. it's an over all great album and i would highly recomend it for hilary fans and first time listeners of all ages!

Duff and stuff........2007-06-28

I've been very happy with Hilary's CD I feel shes grown up the most out of the kids who have come off of disnay around the time she had and started singing. I feel she can still get better though. Alot of dance feeling to the music. I like the dvd on the special edition, atleast for the music videos. I can't wait to see Hilary grow up more and make better albums.

Duff perks up.......2007-06-20

This album is much more of a dance, kinda techno at times album than Hilary's former albums, which were light pop stuff. Hilary wrote or at least co-wrote most all the songs on here, so this album is very much hers. Hilary does display a maturing and pulls off her new style pretty well. She's not the strongest singer, which is likely gonna keep her from ever getting 5 stars, but this is a very listenable, enjoyable album. But this is a strong 4 stars, especially after the listener lets it grow on him/her a bit. I found myself hardly ever impatient to hit the skip button while listening from start to finish. The album has energy and the songs have a good beat. There are fun lyrics too. The songs:

Stranger - the singer doesn't really know her man, he hides things

Dignity - a knock on celebrities who live by the motto of "there's no such thing as bad publicity."

With Love - catchy dance number

Danger - singer is involved with older man, wonders if he'll be good forher in long run

Gypsy Woman - a warning to a man about another woman, she could get him in trouble

Never Stop - very quick, catchy dance tune, hit the repeat button

No Work, All Play - kind of a lighthearted, playful tune

Between You and Me

Dreamer - directed toward the overly obsessed fan, amusing lyrics: "I go to bed and I wake up, isn't that exciting?" Rightly points out these people need to get lives.

Happy - directed at lover who jilted singer. If it were up to him, she'd just be miserable all day, but she's not going to do that.

This album has all the big hits and best stuff from Madonna from 84 thru 90. Great compilation of the stuff from the first phase of Madonna's career. Gotta have this if you're a fan of the 80s.

Good, but not without flaws.......2007-05-27

While I'm reluctant to speak at all negatively about an otherwise fabulous compilation, I do have to concede to being a bit dismayed by the extent to which certain songs on it have been changed - the opening track of Holiday in particular (for which, sadly in my opinion, the Immaculate version seems to have pretty much become the default version - i.e. the one most likely to be heard when Holiday is played somewhere). If the original versions of this and Lucky Star were felt to be too long for such a collection, why couldn't their 7" Edits have been used instead?

Having said that, I certainly think its remix of Material Girl is an improvement and I like its slightly more tropical-sounding (to me) version of La Isla Bonita at least as much as the original as well; but in addition to my criticisms of Holiday and Lucky Star (and I'm not as keen on the Papa Don't Preach present on here either), I should perhaps also mention that Like a Prayer has likewise undergone a little too much remixing for my liking, since it has given the song what I'd describe as a less haunting feel. Not that this means I consider it to be a poor remix though - on the contrary, I think it's rather good as far as radical remixes go. But I do still question whether it's appropriate for a hits album in view of how different it is from the version of Like a Prayer that was actually released as a single and which made this song so famous.

It would've been nice too if a few of Madonna's other pre-1991 hits (e.g. True Blue and Who's That Girl?) had been included, but I can understand why they weren't given the time constraint likely in place. Nevertheless, if at some point (maybe at the end of her official singing career) an even bigger collection of her hits is produced (a two- or three-part one no doubt), I do hope that the needless shortcomings of this one will not be replicated and that the 7" versions of Holiday and Lucky Star (or at least versions very similar to them) will be the ones it contains (though I do as I said prefer the Immaculate version of Material Girl and would be quite happy therefore if that one were to appear again).

The Immaculate Collection spans Madonna's '80s and early '90s tracks. Conceived as a greatest hits collection, this album also contained two new tracks, the ever-so-naughty, Justify My Love and the vocally powerful, Rescue Me. Some of my favorite songs include: Vogue, Cherish, Lucky Star, Material Girl, La Isla Bonita, and Live to Tell. Every song is a classic, no duds here. Madonna just keeps on getting better and better, one of the most important, influential, and provactive woman entertainers of our generation. I also recommend her best album to date, Ray of Light as well. Enjoy this non-stop party from our girl, Madge.

Absolutely Awesome and a must have album for Madonna fans and casual fans.......2007-03-08

This is a five star album and the only Madonna album or collection of hits you need. The album is all that and a bag of chips. In fact the 17 hits on this album show why Madonna is the queen of pop music and why she has been such a big star since the 80's. I do not think Madonna can top or produce better dance/pop music than she did in the 80's and early 90's, so she will always be remembered for these hits in my opinion. This album never gets old and stands its time. The music on this album is completely ageless and feel good music.

Sensational cd.
The only down side is that several of her hits are missing, including 2 of my favorites, True Blue and Who's that girl.
A great trip back in time, and really well done.
A fantastic buy for anyone.
