In the early 1970s Alan Vega cofounded Suicide, chanting and testifying fearfully over Martin Rev's pulsing, undead electronics. Time has upped the ante for what synths have to do to be scary, but Vega's new partners, Mika Vainio and Ilpo Vaisanen of the Finnish group Pan Sonic (formerly Panasonic), have the cold winds of death trapped in their little black boxes. Vega's voice, treated with savage slap-back echo, intones dark, fragmentary phrases about war, desire, banality, and meaninglessness--the effect is a little like Elvis singing Samuel Beckett--while his partners' electronics gurgle, buzz, and cough up silicon blood, sidling away from recognizable notes and reliable beats. Endless's hour of unremitting bleakness can get numbing, but in small doses it's a bracing chill. --Douglas Wolk
New Musical Express
Brilliantly, then, Endless sounds exactly as you might expect. The flying Vs provide the clinical, adventurous and resolutely annoying CD-sticking noises, while Vega (still paranoid about nothing in particular after all these years) claims "it's war" and America is "sick", before making a whimpering noise and heading straight to the bank with his £1.26.

Florida's brilliant singer-songwriter Sam Beam expands Iron & Wine from solo project to a gaggle of friends and family on slide guitar, percussion, and backing vocals on his second album. Fans need not worry--the hushed immediacy and rich melodies remain the focus--but new flavors abound. For instance, the strange "Cinder And Smoke" sounds like a collaboration (with banjos of course) between America, Robert Wyatt and Low. Meanwhile, "On Your Wings," "Free Until They Cut Me Down," and "Teeth in the Grass" showcase a brooding, earthy, Southern-rock-on-laudanum side that the band had previously only demonstrated in concert. It's rare when an artist who's become known for bedroom recordings makes the transition to the studio to produce work that's better--Daniel Johnston, Lou Barlow, and Liz Phair all made their defining moments crouched above a cassette recorder at home. But Beam is the exception to the rule, as he has easily bested himself on the second Iron & Wine album. --Mike McGonigal
Album Description
Listening to Our Endless Numbered Days makes plain Sam's deft touch with words and melody; one that allows him to turn out stories about love, loss, faith, or the lack of it that are at once personal and universal, set to music that is sweetly haunting and timeless.

What "country" music should be........2007-06-02
Most would probably not label Iron & Wine as country music, yet to me their music fits that title better than most artists that are labeled as such. Not only the lyrics, but the atmosphere of the music overall just perfectly illustrates walking barefoot down a country road, or sitting on the porch at sunset with a glass of lemonade. This really just sounds like the country, and even though I live in the big city/suburbs, this album just really takes me there, in a way that stuff like Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw definitely do not.
The sole mastermind of Iron & Wine is Samuel Beam, an unassuming fellow with an extremely simple, yet extremely beautiful approach to music. Armed with only an acoustic guitar, his wispy vocals, and the occasional banjo, Beam comes off very much like what Nick Drake might have sounded like, had he grown up in the rural south. The feel overall is somewhat similar to Drake, but with a warmer, more down-home kind of vibe. There's also a great deal of Simon and Garfunkel influence there as well, most evident on songs like "Love and Some Verses" and "Each Coming Night". However, despite all these comparisons, there's really nothing quite like this.
Musically, this is just the perfect album to relax to. It's extremely mellow and laid-back throughout, and the closest it comes to "rocking" is on "Free Until They Cut Me Down", which is still pretty laid-back. The melodies are catchy and memorable, and the musicianship, while simple, is top-notch. Perhaps my favorite song here is the mesmerizing "Cinder and Smoke", which actually took a few listens to really grow on me. It's not as readily ear-catching as most of the rest, but it's really beautiful, with its female backing vocals, and odd hypnotic chanting outro. You might know "Sunset Soon Forgotten" and "Naked As We Came" from the Dennis Quaid movie "In Good Company", which are both excellent as well (the latter being the most Nick Drake-sounding song here). Really though, every song here is great, and distinctive unto itself. The only bad thing about this album is that it's over much too soon.
So, whether you're from the country, or you're surrounded by concrete and steel, Iron & Wine will take you to a rural paradise from which you'll never want to leave.
Mediation in the fields.......2007-05-22
Sam Beam makes intimately personal music that is oddly impersonal. While these bittersweet songs often ring from universal themes, I sometimes feel like they were straight out of my mind. That is a really neat trick, considering that this genre of folk has a tendency for navel gazing. To that extent, the second CD from Beam's Iron and Wine ranks with the likes of Elliot Smith and the late Nick Drake. These are songs that get inside of your head and stay there.
While that won't certainly be to everyone's taste (a few of my friends rate this kind of music as barely above the level of Dentist Office Muzak), the ambiance of Beam's Southern stoicism is like a contemplative walk through a field of high grass. There are songs of love and death ("Sodom South Georgia" and "Free Until They Cut Me Down") simple life and love ("Sunset Soon Forgotten" and "Passing Afternoon") set to guitar, banjo and Dobro, all sung in Beam's hushed and melodious voice. Like Ray LaMontagne has in the past couple of years (or even Leonard Cohen before them), Beam is writing deeply poetic songs that are just begging to be covered or placed in a movie soundtrack to offer context.
Recommended for fans of Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen, Ray LaMontagne, Will Oldham and Bonnie Prince Billie.
Defining "the sublime".......2007-03-30
If you've ever wondered what the definition of "the sublime" is, listen to "Passing Afternoon," the last track on this perfect album.
I can't write a definition of "the sublime."
But I know that it's achieved in the last 30 seconds of that song.
Alternative Folk.......2007-01-23
Great cd for those of you folk fans who like a twist. Quiet, moody and slightly eclectic. I was pleasantly surprised. Interesting lyrics, good songwriting, and vocals that are pleasing to the ear. A great cd for any collection.

Endless Road.......2007-06-18
This album first captivated me for Tommy's sheer technical wizardry. After watching his early 2007 concert in Atlanta, and thereafter reading up more on whom I consider a music phenomenon, I began to understand why I could listen to this album in its entirety on a regular basis (it's become a permanent resident of my car's CD changer). Tommy seems to be able to tell a story with each song, with notes or measures emoted like words. Amazing. I'll venture to say, as a guitarist myself who strives to do so, that Tommy has gone beyond virtuosity to using guitar music as a language.
Some favorites are "Bella Soave" where Tommy slips in contrasty chord transitions, "Angelina" - whose universal likability is confirmed by several guitarists doing it on YouTube, and "Struttin," which creates a 20s imagery.
A musical treasure, in my opinion.
Tommy Emmanuel.......2007-01-24
Tommy's a fantastic guitarist. You have to see him life to appreciate his guitar talent. This is another CD that doesn't do him justice.
Dear Future Tommy Emmanuel Fan.......2007-01-17
If you love acoustic guitar, this album is definitely for you. Tommy Emmanuel can play with the best of them. Just turn up the volume and let the acoustic sound wash over you.
This is almost a totally solo album, with the exception of backup vocals on "I Still Can't Say Goodbye". Several of the songs follow the fingerstyle of Chet Atkins, and others follow the style of Merle Travis. Highlights include: "(The Man With The) Green Thumb", "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" (this arrangement alone is worth the price of the album), as well as the title track "Endless Road".
If you're a long time Tommy Emmanuel fan and you don't yet have this album, don't hesitate to get it. It continues Tommy's very high standard for acoustic guitar music. If you're not a Tommy Emmanuel fan yet, but you've loved the guitar music of Chet Atkins and Merle Travis, then this album is definitely for you. If you're new to acoustic guitar music altogether, then this is still a good place to start. I recommend this album as well as Tommy's new album "The Mystery". Buy both of them, and if you're not hooked, then, to coin a phrase, check your pulse.
Perfect Road Trip Music.......2007-01-12
The album "Endless Road" is a very satisfying blend of contemporary, jazz and "controlled jamming" music. It is one of the few albums I can listen to in its entirety and repeatedly. The first time I heard Emmanuel's "Over the Rainbow", I had to pull off the road and wait for the radio to identify the artist. It is shear acoustic artistry! The balance of the album is not remakes of earlier or familiar tunes, and each cut is sufficiently unique and satisfying to play during long commutes/drives or when needing time to think things over or when your spirits need a gentle uplift!
Perfection.......2007-01-11
According to Chet Atkins and myself Tommy Emmanuel is the greatest living guitar player. This disk is no exception. Tommy sits there and plays and you think there are many guitars playing at once. Everyone should have a chance to hear him.

Nearly a quarter-century (and bassist John Entwistle) passed between what had been considered the Who's career-capping album, It's Hard, and this 19-song epic, which at its best has the band of two pining for the days of Who's Next. Built from the triumph of the mini-opera Wire & Glass EP (included here in its entirety), Endless Wire mixes metaphors of music, war, and religion, while showcasing Roger Daltrey's ageless vocal cords and Pete Townshend at his windmilling best. Launching with a "Baba O'Riley"-like synth break in "Fragments," Daltrey asks "Are we breathing out or breathing in?" and Townshend answers with a thrashing, crashing Gibson. When the volume is turned up, there are echoes of three decades ago. "It's Not Enough" and "Mike Post Theme" conjure images of Entwistle and Keith Moon--the latter song, with its quiet verse and thunderous chorus, recalls "Going Mobile" and longs for Moon to whack it into shape. But the linchpin remains Townshend's songwriting, whether he's questioning faith ("Man in a Purple Dress"), showing gratitude for support ("You Stand By Me"), or dreaming of entertaining immortals into eternity ("Out on an Endless Wire"). By the time it wraps up, Endless Wire tells two things. No, it does not rank with the band's best work. But yes, as long as Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey walk the earth in tandem, the Who live on. --Scott Holter

Disappointed.......2007-07-10
I can understand people looking beyond the music and appreciating the staying power of talented musicians such as Pete and Roger. I am a long time Who fan and have appreciated everything I have heard from them including solo projects, rock operas, mixed anthologies, lost classics, etc.
I can say with complete conviction, after anticipating a new Who studio album amid rumors for the last two decades, that I am no longer a Who fan. I simply did not like this.
Just because we age along with our favorite artists, doesn't mean we have to settle for something that is totally devoid of any 'punch'. This album lacked anything to keep me awake. Maybe that is why I have heard nothing from this album on the radio!
I may be middle aged, but I still need some music I can air guitar to. I can't picture Pete smashing his guitar on stage to anything from this CD.
OK but not great.......2007-07-08
I'm a huge Who fan. I've seen them live, and with Moon on drums too. This CD is just OK. My advice would be look for classic Who, if you don't own any CDs, and buy it. "Live at Leeds", "The Who By Numbers", "Tommy", "Quadrophenia" and of course "Who's Next". I guess when you get old you run of things to say. That's what seems to have happened to Pete Thownsend.
It's good to know the boys still have it! .......2007-06-29
After an extremely long break, the boys (minus Moonie and The Ox unfortunately) are back with new songs and new members (Pino and Zak) and they sound just as vibrant and solid as they did in the 60s and 70s! This is a great come back album with the good ol' Who styles ..... guitars, mandolin, keyboards, lots of drums, etc and Pete and Roger still hold the group together well! The songs are great and full of new life from a band that has stood the test of time and have still arisen as winners! Another bloody good album from the rockers we grew up with! All Who fans must buy this!
50/50.......2007-06-03
This reminds me of a half Who and half Townshend solo. First 9 tracks are The Who. Fragments w/ an intro salute to Baba O'Reily, Dylansque lyrics on A Man In The Purple Dress. Mike Post Theme is classic Who one of the best tracks on this CD. In the Ether Daltrey sounds like Tom Waits which is the only song that doesn't fit in this section. Black Widow's Eyes could of came from Who Are You album. Two Thousand Years and It's Not Enough has that sound from It's Hard album.
Mini-Opera tracks 10 to 21, Wire & Glass to me sounds like it's part of Townshends solo recordings. Only a few tracks I consider Who material like Sound Round, We Got A Hit, and Mirror Door.
Daltrey's vocals are good on the studio songs but when it came to the DVD Live At Lyon tracks his vocals on the classics cuts I take goes w/ age. He does a decent live version of Mike Post Theme that is catered more to his present day vocals.
Townshend's guitar and pen are still working!!!.......2007-05-31
Who fans have waited 25 years for new material(1 song was written and a cover song performed by The Who on Townshend's 1989 "Iron Man") to be written and here it is in all it's full Townshend and Daltrey glory. Sadly with the passing of Entwistle in 2002,this new album was recorded without him(along with 2 very fine songs, 1 in tribute to him on "Then and Now") It's all here for you, ballad type songs such as "Mike Post Theme",true rockers as in "It's not enough" Your thoughtful and even controversal "Man in a purple Dress",and of course your mini opera "Wire and Glass" which features the extended version of "Endless Wire" with Daltrey's added vocals, happens to be my personal fovorite in that set. I can't find any real weak or rushed masterial on this album, and can crank up my stereo at any time for these songs. My only complaint is Entwistle's absense,as I am sure he too, would have contributed his share of music. This is The Who in the 21st century. Suspend your vintage memories of the late 60's and 70's and enjoy this album for all that it is. If not, grab your vintage LPs along with a Quad receiver.

The Band's highway actually ended in 1978 at The Last Waltz, with the departure of founding member, guitarist, and principal songwriter Robbie Robertson. Considered by many to be ground zero of the roots-and-Americana movement despite being four-fifths Canadian, their decade-long Robertson-led run produced a handful of undeniable classics and volumes of timeless and influential music. So it's somewhat surprising that no one has released a tribute album to this legendary group until now. But after listening to these 17 tracks, it's clear why. Even with the best of intentions, many of these versions fail to capture the emotion and intensity of the original performances. All but the UK's Gomez are American-based, yet with a few notable exceptions, the acts either mimic the Band's already archetypal arrangements or add nothing unique. Bruce Hornsby sings the lyrics of the touching "King Harvest" like he's reading them off cue cards, Guster zip through a chilly "This Wheel's on Fire" with little emotional attachment, and Jack Johnson's folksy "I Shall Be Released" squanders the song's gospel tendencies. The women fare far better, with Lee Ann Womack nailing the subtleties of "The Weight" in a lovely, nuanced country interpretation, the Roches' unplugged sisterly harmonies bringing a gorgeous and appropriate back-porch feel to "Acadian Driftwood," and Rosanne Cash turning in a tender and touching "The Unfaithful Servant." Jakob Dylan and Lizz Wright do justice to the sensitive "Whispering Pines" and rockers Widespread Panic, the Allman Brothers Band, and My Morning Jacket add appropriate Southern grit to their selections. Ultimately, though, these covers make you appreciate how flawlessly the Band realized their own music and provided consummate arrangements that cannot be improved on. --Hal Horowitz

You'll never get tired of listening to these renditions of the music of the Band
Great effort, but I'd still prefer the original Band CDs.......2007-07-09
Some of my favorites, "Cripple Creek" by Gomez, "Unfaithful Servant" by Roseanne Cash, "Whispering Pines" with Jakob Dylan and Lizz Wright, and "Weight" with Lee Ann Womack. These are all different enough from the original music that they're interesting. Still, nobody does the Band like the Band no matter how under-appreciated this group is. So, buy the Band if you don't have them and get this CD if you're interested in hearing covers of their music afterward.
Worth the purchase but not all is gold.......2007-05-30
I do like this album a good deal but let me start with the low points.
The Lows:
The Allmans: A band I love but Greg, learn the words brother. He clearly forgets a bunch of vocals on "The Night They Drove Ole Dixe Down". I can't believe they even put this version on the album.
Gomez: Don't know much about this group but their version of "Up On Cripple Creek" is crapola.
Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers: A solid attempt by Bruce but the band is missing the low end groove that really makes "King Harvest" the great song that it is. Listenable but doesn't do justice to an incredible song.
The Highs:
The Roches: Beautiful harmonies on Acadian Driftwood. My favorite cover on this album.
Death Cab for Cutie: I've heard a lot about these guys and I think it's time for me to check them out. Excellent rendition of Rockin' Chair.
Jack Johnson: I read someone say that his vocals are weak on "I Shall Be Released" but I disagree. I think this song is a case of the right singer for the right song.
Outside of that the rest of the album is pretty solid. I don't regret shelling out 10 clams for it.
"A Few Good Songs".......2007-05-18
My Morning Jacket's take on "It Makes No Difference" may well be worth the cost of the album, and the body of work captured in the disc validates the powerful and influential song writing of The Band. Unfortunately, the disc is a collection of artists whose interpretations may find you fumbling quickly for the skip button as the performances range from pleasant, to dull, and then irritating. Now you'll have an incentive to sit down and learn how to create a play list for your player.
Endless Highway.......2007-05-13
The Band is my all-time favorite rock group and believe them to be one of the best ever so for other artists to attempt to reinterpret the Band's music is an act of courage -- or insanity. Overall the songs were well recreated but none rise to the quality of the original. The Band's unique and brilliant talents couldn't possibly be matched. Having said this, I'm glad that I bought the CD and enjoy it.

Amazon.com essential recording
Brian Wilson's brilliance manifested itself in the euphoric, cheerfully square, sun-and-fun stuff heard here early on, before it got darker and more complicated. Endless Summer runs from the beginning of the Boys' pinstriped career to 1965, right before the melancholy of Pet Sounds, but also includes the inescapable "Good Vibrations." You can hear a few hints of adolescent sadness and fear--"Help Me, Rhonda" is essentially a kids' sing-along about a wrenching emotional rebound, and the shadow of death is hiding somewhere in "Don't Worry, Baby"--but Wilson is mostly concerned with the cars, waves, and girls that made up the Boys' public image, and his ingenious arrangements (coupled with the group's inimitable harmonies) make everything go down as smoothly as lemonade. --Douglas Wolk

Beach BoysEndless Summer.......2006-08-18
I am an original fan of the Beach Boys and the Beatles. The first two albums I ever bought at age 13 were Meet The Beatles and Surfer Girl. After all these years, when I want to listen to the Beach Boys, I always grab Endless Summer. There have been many compilations of Beach Boys Hits over the years, but none come close to this, even the new Sounds of Summer. Endless Summer stayed within that early three year period and the programming of the album is perfect(even though they used the inferior LP version of Help Me Ronda). It is still the best Beach Boys album of old material.

"Endless Summer" is an essential compilation, supposedly the new 'remastered' "Sounds Of Summer" is so-called 'definitive,' but I don't think so. "Endless Summer" is more than a compilation; it turned the Beach Boys around since they were rapidly declining at the time.
The LP/CD release is notorious for having stereo versions of the singles, and also incorrect versions of "Be True To Your School" and "Help Me, Rhonda." The gold DCC release fixes this by substituting the actual single versions, but it still has stereo versions of some of the singles (which is not bad at all.)
If you can snag the gold CD, especially if it is a bargain, go ahead and get it, otherwise don't even bother with this disc. Get the double disc "Greastest Hits" from Razor and Tie instead.
Sidetracked.......2006-06-22
I've owned several of the Beach Boys compilations and few have been disappointing. This one is. I can't believe that a major record company would put out a product like this and not realize the mistakes involved. "Help Me, Rhonda" has an entire track missing, and it's blatantly obvious to anyone who has ears. "Be True to Your School" is an inferior cut. Why this one is included I fail to understand. It too is missing an entire track. There are other excellent compilations of Beach Boys material out there worth your hard earned money. Let this one slide!
oh yeah............2006-05-22
I'm only 19 years old and The Beach Boys are my all time favorite group of that era. I used to have this album on tape but lost it somewhere. I'm from California so me and my best friend cruise around town listenin to The Beach Boys. I haven't been able to find this album in stores. I listen to them so much I know all thier songs from this album.
Well, they sure DID get around............2006-05-10
Let's go surfin' now
Everybody's learning how
Come on and safari with me
(Come on and safari with...)
Early in the morning we'll be startin out
Some honeys will be comin' along
We're loadin' up my woody
with the boards inside
and heading out singing our song
Come on (surf route) baby wait and see (surfin' safari)
Yes I'm gonna (surf route) take you surfin' (surfin' safari) with me
Come along (surf route) baby wait and see (surfin' safari)
Yes I'm gonna (surf route) take you surfin' (surfin' safari) with me
Let's go surfin' now
Everybody's learning how
Come on and safari with me
Now, at the risk of sounding so schmaltzy that I get 10,000 negative votes for just this one review, I have to admit that this CD brings back a LOT of fond memories for me. Although I was too young to listen to The Beach Boys in the early 1960's, I still grew up listening to the album throughout the 1970's. All of us kids at school would ache for the next dance night when we'd all show up and dance to these great songs. We never wanted to stop dancing when we heard these awesome songs; and when one of the teachers chaperoning the dance would look at us he would smile when he saw us having fun, too. They were beautifully written songs then; and they're equally beautiful songs now.
The set of tracks on this album displays the remarkable versatility of The Beach Boys. They could sing about the excitement of a youthful summer romance ("All Summer Long,") the allure of the opposite sex ("California Girls,") the machismo pride of being a big man on campus ("Be True To Your School,") and even the risk factors in love and the possible end of a love affair with the song "Don't Worry Baby."
Ever since The Beach Boys wrote "Good Vibrations" and performed it for the first time, people have gone wild over it! It's an awesome song that even by itself highlights the talents and versatility of the group. Listen to the song. You will hear it consistently alternating between the sounds of a somewhat more traditional type of ballad with the racier, quasi-psychedelic sounds that were just beginning to permeate music in the mid 1960's. Love it!
The quality of the sound is excellent and the cover art is great. The pictures of the men within nature symbolize for me both the emotional freedom to experience love and the natural sex drive men have for their women. The liner notes have the song credits but the lyrics are not here. I wished there were an essay about The Beach Boys, especially for new fans of the group. Unfortunately, you won't find one in the liner notes; I guess this is a minor disappointment, though.
Overall, this is SOME GREAT CD to pick for your first "Beach Boys" CD! It really highlights some of their very best work. I agree with other reviewers that it is not comprehensive by itself and if you want to get more Beach Boy CDs I would try Pet Sounds for your next CD.
I highly recommend this CD for fans of The Beach Boys (obviously), people who want to try out a Beach Boys CD, fans of pop as well as the bands from the 1960's in general. A keeper! SMILE

I LOVE REAL HIP-HOP!, This cd was alright but not that good..
i seen the reviews and thought that i was geting some dope $hit.
But what i got was four cd's with a combined total of four songs that i listen to. rhymes are not that good, there a 3 out of like 5 and a half.
I will stick to my stuff, word up krumb snatcha, O.C. Words-worth, AZ,
Can-i-Bus, Mighty Mithy MOS DEF, GANG-STAR. ECT........

i'm not going to write a massive long explanation of this cd, cuz if your checking this cd, you've already heard of, and heard celph titled on more than one occasion....
all i have to say is this... your stUPID if you don't get it...

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.......2007-05-07
I think this Hip Hop collection slams and jams at the same time, great beats, awesome lyrical content, alot of great metaphors and gun talk-also funny. Any hip hop fan should own this 4(yes you heard right 4) CD collection. Celph, Apathy, the Demigodz all show out on this collabo-Sorry Nas-HIP HOP is on the respirator.
Didnt bring as much CHAOS as i expected or hoped!!.......2007-03-21
Celph Titled is an amazing lyricist that absolutely enhances every track he spits on. He becomes the spotlight even when he's guest appearing on tracks for other artists. However after 75 tracks of the same battle rap, gun laced metaphors I found it very repetitive. So many tracks were like listening to the same joints over and over again. Also so many of the other artists on the tracks with him are so inferior that they ruin alotta the tracks completly. Also the production was very similar on too many joints. I would've preferred alot more Celph solo tracks (out of 75 I dont think thats too much to ask for) and for abit of diversity in the subject matter. However after all that being said, there's so much here that EVERYBODY is bound to like alot of the tracks they hear. Ive actually put together my own Celph Titled 14 track album from this onto my ipod and its 1 of the best albums in my entire collection. His metaphors and flows are some of the tightest+laugh out loud inducing on the planet. I'd say his official solo long player will be off the meter.
75 Tracks of Rhyming Couplets About Gats.......2007-02-22
I've always appreciated Celph Titled when I've heard him featured on Jedi Mind Tricks and Outerspace tracks, so I was curious when he dropped an epic 4 disc set. To his credit, Celph is consistent throughout the album: his usual musing, almost incredulous delivery, and stacks of multi-syllabic rhyming couplets. If that's your thing, then cop the album and you won't be disappointed. Personally, though, I found that much virtually identical material mind-numbingly boring: 12 tracks would have sufficed; 75 comes across as self-righteous.
The lowdown: For what it is (hours upon hours of Celph Titled doing his thing with the usual cast of co-stars), the collection is surprisingly consistent - for my money, anything that consistent for that long, though, is straight up boring. Celph's rhyme scheme is clever, but his content leaves a whole lot to be desired.

Album Description
The legendary THROBBING GRISTLE have completed their first new studio album in 25 years, entitled PART TWO. THE ENDLESS NOT. Almost 30 years on since their inception from the ashes of performance art troupe/media guerrilla cell Coum Transmissions, THROBBING GRISTLE'S challenging, expressive, self-empowering manifestos and music are as relevant today as they were back in the bleak mid-70s. As historically important during their active period of 1975 - 1981 as contemporaries Can, The Sex Pistols, and Kraftwerk, THROBBING GRISTLE'S influence on today's music (from experimental production techniques and confrontational live shows to independent promotion via their own Industrial Records label) runs far deeper than they are often credited.

A synthesis of their respective histories.......2007-06-20
I am glad to say that TG's comeback album, The Endless Not, is absolutely awesome. There is little new ground covered here, but the overall quality and consistency of the album makes that overlookable. Really, the album moves between moments reminiscient of the Coil discography and the old TG discography. This means that finally, the full effect of some the fundamental TG concepts can be felt... they sound better than ever here, fully realized with modern technology.
Rather than create an album of incredible diversity and experimentation like "D.O.A", TG focused on one of the types of songs that they did best... rhythmic, dense walls of sound. However, there's a noticably increased focused on melodies and musicality, which weave in and out of the 'found sound' arrangements. Genesis' vocals are often melodic. I'll address some of the individual tracks:
Opener "Vow of Silence" is the traditional, subtle, pulse-like rhythm with spliced, mulilated samples and vocals overlayed. "Greasy Spoon" and "Lyre Lyre" follow this sort of template as well.
The slow jazz of "Rabbit Snare" leans clearly in the Coil direction, and even includes Genesis singing some very John Balance-esque lyrics ("Why are you scared?") to a very John Balance-esque melody. This track also has the only appearance of Cosey's familiar deranged cornet playing.
"The Worm Waits Its Turn" sounds more like a Pigface track than TG in the latter half. It is dominated by a straightforward beat and Genesis' expressive spoken word.
"Separated" and "Above the Below" are the freshest feeling tracks, and are Chris Carter's and Cosey's solo tracks respectively (each member has a solo track, like they did on "D.O.A"). They likely only feel new to me because I haven't heard any of their work (much of which was together) since the break up of TG. The style of synth and guitar work the two used to contribute to TG is noticably missing from The Endless Not, and it would seem they have both moved into other more electronic areas. Both tracks are quite subdued and atmospheric.
While the song structures may not vary much, the overall range of sounds present on The Endless Not is huge. And much like Coil, the mixing and production is absolutely incredible. It sounds great on speakers, and even better on headphones.
In conclusion, TG has returned and delivered possibly the most consistent and enjoyable album of their career, but not even close to the most adventurous.
Not entirely disturbing........2007-05-05
While not as abrasive or shocking or sonically perverse as the TG of the seventies and eighties, The Endless Not is still a great album. I was a little dissapointed at first to not find anything on this album with quite the punch of classic TG tracks like 'Discipline', 'Adrenaline', or 'Still Walking' but the tracks on The Endless Not are just as engrossing and strange as anything Tg has ever done. It may be a little more mainstream but it's no worse for it, 'Rabbit Snare', which is probably one of the most normal songs TG has ever recorded is a beautiful is a somewhat twisted jazz track, and the closing 'song' 'After The Fall' is one of TG's most beautiful songs ever.
Will grow on you.......2007-04-08
I won't go into all the details.. but pretty much all the reviewers are dead on about this record. It plays more like a Coil disc. I was honestly hoping for more of the original, more dense sound that got me into them. This is very polished at times, and jazzy. I wasn't too impressed with the TG Now, and I was hoping they would lure away from that type of processed sound. The first track is misleading (best track on the record).. I was hoping after I heard it for the rest of the album to follow suit. It turned out to get pretty mellow.. sort of a let down. Like someone else said.. Genesis seems to be at a loss for lyrics on a couple.. more so on 4. I don't enjoy his vocals as much this time around.. for its more singing. I was hoping for some more effects here and there.
Its going to grow on me, no doubt. I've been waiting for this release for a long time.. the limited edition was a let down. I got the wood version.. and it was just a stick in the cd tray. WOW, how exciting.
Nothing Here Now But The Recordings.......2007-04-05
When I was first contacted about a new T.G. album, my first impulse was to ignore it, so as to not sully the (THEE?!) memories of a truly great and influential group. Would they go "Old School", or try to be "modern" - for "the kids"? Would these artists of "advanced age" (I am among that number, so I can say that!) embarrass themselves by trying to regain the aggression of their youth? My curiosity got the best of me, and within a couple of hours I couldn't resist the urge to download it.
It's 2007 and T.G. have released a great album, holding it's own amongst the first four. In fact they never missed a beat. They move forward, using modern technology, not attempting to ape 1980, and yet still sounding like Throbbing Gristle. They all bring to the table their differing personalities and talents. Gen is still a writer capable of transcending and has a command of his voice, messing with your ear hole at will. Chris Carter has composed layers of subtle and amazing sounds and rhythm that reveal themselves more upon each listen. The washes and stabs of noise and effects that (I'm assuming) Cosey and Peter add are stunning, and take the music to that next level. There is no pose here, no signs of cashing in, and no compromise evident. This Gristle is Throbbing without need of Viagra.
I'll tell you that when I've attempted to listen to the old T.G. music over the years, dragging out the vinyl, buying the CD re-issues, etc., I have been disappointed. The world has changed, I had changed and those albums just didn't move me anymore. So much of their philosophy and modus operandi has been co-opted, used and diluted through the years, but as it turns out, these four people can still get together and make a racket that stops me dead in my tracks.
I just ordered the Part Two: The Endless Not (Special Limited Edition), and I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm having a hard time trying to talk myself out tracking down the other three totems! I'm a 46 year-old "soccer dad" and goofy for T.G. again. ...The old man smiled...
TG Reborn.......2007-04-05
Fresh and familiar all at the same time, Part Two -the Endless Not is TG firing on all cylinders. Its diversity reminds me of Twenty Jazz Funk Greats. The clattering, machine-like noise you'd expect ( the opening Vow of Silence) sits along side droning, atonal dirges with P. Orridge's trademark vocals (Lyre Liar ). Almost a Kiss is *almost* a love song, done TG-style, with some of the most passionate vocals Orridge has ever laid on tape - its brutal honesty is quite moving. There are quieter, ambient, almost symphonic moments ( After the Fall ). And yes, there is a song here ( Rabbit Snare ) that features gently brushed snares, jazz-like stabs of dissonant piano and (gasp!) touches of solo organ. The Worm Waits its Turn is the most modern sounding tune here - strip away the spoken word vocals, and its funkiness actually approaches conventionality. Make no mistake, though. Despite a very few moments that flirt with the mainstream, this ranks with some of the most savage and most confrontational work this band has ever recorded. A fine return for Throbbing Gristle. Very highly recommended.

Great 70s Disco Music!.......2005-12-25
Donna Summer is the ultimate queen of Disco. No doubt about it.
Summer of Love. Donna is a disco primadonna(some times).......2005-09-21
Sure this is Donna Summer`s greatest hits. Some tracks blow you away, some dont. The new track on this album Melody of Love is not to much to shout hurray to. But when it comes to the classics that`s another cup of tea. And i dont mean the oldest one, but at the end of the 70 ths she troughly shine. It start`s with Track 9. Hot stuff and Track 10 Bad Girls. That`s what i called Disco with a sting in it. It brings sweet memories back to when the disco was cool and has a certain creativity over it. You can skip trough much of the other stuff. Track 10 Bad Girls is the ultimate Summer Hit, no over, no besides. That`s a fact Track 15 She works hard for the Money has enough tempo upbeat to make your dance. Also when she uses the same producers as early Sam Fox used back in the 80 ths(stock/aitken/waterman) Summer shines, especially on Track 17 and Track 18
This time i know its for real and I dont wanna get hurt.
Still Summer is good to listen to when the weather is bad. She still sparks sometimes
Endless Summer.......2005-09-07
I must admit that I never really found Donna Summer that interesting (yes I'm a big disco fan) but somehow she just seemed like an obvious choice, so I stayed away. I woke up one day and decided to give it a try, so I bought "Endless Summer" which has all of her most well known songs compiled in their edited versions. All the hits are here: "Hot Stuff", "MacArthur Park", "Last Dance" and "Love to Love You Baby". I'm so glad that Donna didn't turn into one of those "has been" disco singers like Gloria Gaynor (I feel so sorry for her, aimlessly lost, she recorded some truly awful albums in the 80's with shameless covers of such songs as "I Will Always Love You", "Careless Whisper" and endless re-recordings of her only true worldwide hit "I Will Survive"). That being said, I do enjoy listening to both Gaynor and Summer, but I must say that I prefer Grace Jones and Loleatta Holloway any day over them. :)

A Worthy Reissue.......2007-05-31
"Endless Summer" has already been venerated in the minds of many avant-garde music fans as a masterpiece. In fact, it has set the bar for ambient, electronic music in the 21st century thus far. Worthy of countless replays, for so many reasons, "Endless Summer" means so many things to so many different people. It's glitchy electronica ultimately reveals underlying harmonies, its more organic "melodies" really offer pop music in mechanical form, and its often-dreamy ambiance reflects an aesthetic perfectly fitting give the title. If you are new to the avant-garde area, there is nothing I can tell you about this album, because it approaches music different than pop music. I will say this; if you are a fan of love, a fan of summer, a fan of dreams - you should probably listen to Endless Summer.

Those who may have feared that Renée Fleming might approach Handel with a too-Romantic vocal attitude need not have; whether it's the leadership of the sympathetic, historically informed Harry Bicket, the sound of the spare but warm Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, plain good sense and musicianship, or any combination of these, here she offers sixteen arias in almost-impeccable Baroque fashion. I doubt whether sopranos of Handel's age had voices as plush as Ms Fleming's but she manages to keep her tone as light and as airy as possible in these selections, never leaning or swooping into an accompanying note in an "un-Baroque" manner, and the result is simply ravishing. The voice, of course, is almost unbelievably beautiful and agile, the technique impeccable, complete with a trill unmatchable in any soprano singing today. From the long-breathed lines of "O sleep why dost thou leave me" from Semele to the fireworks in Cleopatra's "Da tempeste
," with stops along the way at the famous "Ombra mai fu" and a complete rarity from the composer's Lotario, this CD is just breathtaking. Brava Fleming--and bravo Harry Bicket! Oh, yes--bravo Handel! --Robert Levine

clear as a bell.......2007-02-16
Renee Fleming is one of the most talented female vocalists around. She has such a beautiful, crystal clear voice, and she sings every song on this album well. As a singer myself, I definitely look up to her and very much admire the tone, quality, power, and range of her voice. I would definitely reccommend this album to anyone who enjoys classical music or is looking for someone to aspire to.
Renee Fleming...somewhat out of her depth.......2006-10-20
While it's not the most thrilling Renee Fleming album in the catalogue, her interpretations of Handel pieces is quite an accomplished feat, but when compared to her earlier efforts, rings hollow with it's lack of emotion. As other reviewers have noted, Ms Fleming does not sound like she is in complete grasp of the material, and her performance lacks any real depth or dramatic weight.
Perhaps the pieces of Handel aren't completely flattering to her style, or the mood in the recording studio might not have been exactly right...a million things might have happened to dull this album's power. I have listened to this album a couple of times now, and I'll keep it in my collection, but this one is for the die-hard Renee Fleming fans.

Handel sung with gusto and wit.......2005-12-07
I am utterly in love with Renee Fleming's voice and I am very glad that she returned to her roots in this luminous Handel Recital. While her fioritura is not as excellent as Sutherland's she surpasses the Australian with her sincerity and sense for drama. Not one word is sung without attention, her silken voice sound absolutely radiant here. I also noticed that she is singing more precisely and elegantly here, giving Handel a dignified elegance, yet passion that it hasn't had since Ferrier (Who was an alto but she still reigns supreme). It is definitely a step in the right direction. Brava Miss Fleming!
Very disappointing Handel recital.......2005-10-30
This recital is mostly very bland and boring, with Fleming's Baroque vocal technique lacking in many ways.
The slow, languid arias like the opening "Oh Sleep" are too drawn out, without any character. The fast acrobatic arias show lack of agility, and poorly executed and overdone ornamentation. Fleming's heavy, laboured coloratura seems ill fitted for these selections. "Scoglio d'immota" in particular is very bad. Her leaps "from stone to stone" in this aria are proceeded by something of a bellow before each note. Fleming's rthythmic waywardness is also very evident in many tracks, and her diction is very indistinct. In English tracks she prounounces vowels in such bizarre ways, her singing of "endless laav" made me laugh and her Italian in "Quando spieghi" is just awful.
Fleming's "Ombra Mai Fu" lacks any character, tenderness, not to mention the missing recitativo. Lorraine Hunt's infinitely superior version should not be even compared to this one. And "Lascia ch'io pianga" is just so over the top, it sounds like a crossover track without the beat. Even Angela Gheorghiu's soppy but honest singing of this piece beats Fleming's interpretation.
"Let the Bright Serephim" has very serious tempo and scooping issues; Kiri Te Kanawa's unremarkable but pleasant enough version is better. "V'adoro pupille" is another drawn out, overtly sentimental aria. And in "Da Tempeste" Fleming sings the runs as it was jazz (?) music, it's strange, and the da capo part is so over the top. This aria is a total mess.
I have to admit I have problems listening to this album as a whole, midway through I just could not tolerate it any more. When I finally listened to the rest of this album, I liked it even less. The last track, Peaceful Shore is again so bland and pointless. I was just glad to be at the end of this recital.
As many people pointed out, even the accoustics of this recording are not good. The Orchestra of Enlightment plays just fine, but it makes little difference. With so many wonderful recent Handel recitals to choose from (Hunt, Bayrakdarian, Conolly, classics like Kirkby, Battle's Baroque Duets...) I think this is the one to skip.
Brava Renee!!!.......2005-09-28
This album is truly amazing. Renee has such a way with music from the Baroque era. She didn't over Romanticize the music. She lightened her voice perfectly for Handel's arias. The Giulio Cesare arias are incredible, and Endless Pleasure from Semele is astounding. Once again Brava!!
