Editorial Reviews
From URB Magazine
If deep house ever had a flag bearer, Kevin Yost would probably be just that man. His releases over the years (which culminated in 1999's brilliant One Starry Night album) have seduced thousands with their deep beats and jazz-flecked trimmings. For those tired of boshing Euro house or bland East Coast garage, Yost's middle road was one worth traveling. Forward-thinking, groovy, hypnotic and obtuse in equal parts, Yost's blueprint has been imitated by many but rarely bettered.

Which brings us to Road Less Traveled. Essentially, it's more of the same but with added twists and turns, no doubt influenced by Yost's remix work for the likes of Josh Wink, Everything But the Girl and Kings of Tomorrow. The opening "Move Your Mind" actually throws you off a bit, its house-verging-on-prog sensibilities screaming out to be dropped by Sasha or Tenaglia at the end of some marathon 12-hour set. But after that it's straight into the house mood; tracks like "Love Not Love" and new single "7th Heaven" are classic Yost creations with their jazz-tinged piano and soulful vibes. Wisely, Yost doesn't keep it locked all night to the four/four beat - he meanders with the dope robot blues of "In Walked Mr. Cool," the Hammond-fuelled jazz workout "Intentions" and Jazzanova-styled rhythms of "5 Alive." But it's Yost's love of house music that he returns to, with cuts like the rumbling "When In Doubt" and the Latin-esque "One Day Without Her," that round out this impressive package.

4 out of 5 stars Very, very good...........2004-07-06

...but, he's done better. If you're new to Kevin Yost, this one might be a difficult cd to judge because you'd have no point of reference. This is still an amazing cd, but you'd have to hear some of his other work (take Small Town Underground and Straight Out... for instance) to realize that this one, while incredible, just does not have the same vibe.

If you don't know what to expect with this, it can pretty much be compared to stuff you'd find on the labels such as Naked Music, Dolce Vita, Hed Kandi, etc. In fact, it's a safe bet that you can grab any compilation by these labels and find at least one Kevin Yost song on them. It's a very deep, smooth, laid-back style of "house," very jazzy and sensual, althought I'm not sure that word is entirely accurate. In short, it's dam* good listening and perfect for an array of settings, be it sunning poolside/oceanside, or over dinner and cocktails.

Again, a solid four-star release, but I would start elsewhere if this is you're first venture into Kevin Yost's work.

3 out of 5 stars Not his best work so far, still OK.......2001-12-28

This is an OK album, but if you expect the same level of innovation found in One Starry Night, then I would advise you to listen to the track samples before buying. A couple of tracks are very good (This Night is my favorite), but overall you'll find a lot of repetitive loops across several tracks, and that old piano sound which I found a bit passe' for deep house.

4 out of 5 stars solid deep house.......2001-06-01

As the URB magazine review states, this is a good album. If you're familiar with Yost you should know what to expect; if you're not, this is a fine place to begin the friendship. True, the first track can throw you (in fact it put me off so much I had to play the whole album through to amend my initial opinion), but it's mostly very good quality house. Perfect lounge music, dinner party, etc.
