Product Description
9 Lazy 9 joined Ninja Tune when Ninja Tune was just one grey metal cupboard in a run down London loft. Operating out of Italy in 1992 they soon gained respect for their ground cracking first album Paradise Blown. Their sound, distinctively more sun than North Sea, is a smoky Mediterranean mix of vines & good times. Keir Fraserello & Giacomo Braddellini have been making music for many years in different guises before combining forces in Rome in the early nineties. They have been working with some of Italy's finest musicians on their latest album, Sweet Jones, recorded in the Umbrian Hills near Orvietto. Gianluca Petrella plays trombone, Mishael Levron guitar, Manu Bandettini plays flute with Adriano Tirelli on bassoon. The combined force brings you one of the freshest records to come out of Italy for some time. 9 Lazy 9 features James Bradell aka Funki Porcini. Ninja Tune. 12 tracks. 2003.

DUPED!!!!!.......2007-03-04
I was soooo disappointed. I love Norah's song, "Sleepless Nights". But why would I pay $18.99 for 2 songs!!! This comes from Japan. I don't feel this product was fully and honestly portrayed when I orderd it. I would never buy a cd listing 2 songs for that price! I will continue my dispute with AMAZON.
Sleepless Nights/Those Sweet Words~Norah Jones.......2007-01-21
This CD had only two songs and one of them from Norah Jones original album. Very poor value based on the cost of the CD over $ 18.00.

SWEET SWEET SWEET POTATO Q'S.......2006-03-19
This is the most uplifting music I've ever heard. If you're having one of those burdensome days, fire this up and see how fast you begin to laugh. Finally we (ladies) have one on the men. I've ordered for all my closest sisters/daughters/friends. If you take life seriously, don't buy it. Otherwise, order it and enjoy. I'd really rate it 5+.
I want to see this on Broadway!!.......2005-12-31
This CD had me laughing and dancing and singing along the very first time I listened to it. Now I want to see it on Broadway -- Sweet Potato Queens' Big-As Broadway Review! It did seem like two tracks (I Don't Want Someone Like You and Give Me a Chance) were out of place here. They are good torch songs but don't match the rollicking, happy-in-my-own-skin attitude of the other tracks. I know I'll be buying other CDs from this performer.
As Much Fun As You Can Legally Have.......2003-11-27
Kacey Jones, whether "live" or on CD is about as much fun as you can have without getting arrested ! I bought this CD on a whim and enjoyed it immediately. By a strange twist of fate, the Nashville-based singer / songwriter / humorist / producer / arranger was appearing in my area within days of purchasing the CD. Her live show was a blast ! Kacey has a great sense of humor, although she can turn out a great "serious" tune equally well. Her arrangements cover many different styles of music, so there's a little something to please many different tastes. I've since acquired all of her CDs and recommend anything she puts out. If Kacey records it, I'll buy it ! Check out her website at: www.KaceyJones.com for more info on this very, very funny and talented performer.

Music for the masses.......2005-09-25
This disc is a bit different from many of the Cambridge Singers' discs in that it is exclusively secular songs. They have retained one of their favourite recording spaces, the Lady Chapel at Ely Cathedral, a structure well atuned to a capella singing (it has a natural nine second delay in the cathedral). This recording was John Rutter's first album on American Gramaphone Records.
--Music--
Madrigals are songs that have various purposes. They can be for private or public entertainment; they can be together with dramatic performances or played on their own. Petrarch is the inspiration of many madrigal texts, and folk songs also feature significantly. The English Madrigal School took full bloom during the golden age of Elizabeth; by the middle of the seventeenth century, the era of composition of the madrigal was essentially over. However, they have remained a popular pieces for performance, and many modern composers have arranged them, including on this disc Holst, Vaughan Williams and the Cambridge Singers director, Rutter.
Madrigals are often upbeat, happy, sometimes poignant, and lively. Some madrigals incorporate humour and jokes. There are exceptions to all of these, to be sure, including among the songs on this disc. Perhaps the best known madrigal in modern times, Greensleeves, is presented as the last piece on this disc, here in an arrangement by Vaughan Williams. There are lively emotions and sombre tones here, all sung with grace and consistent quality.
--Liner Notes--
Unlike many of the Cambridge Singers' CDs' liner notes, this one has a biographical sketch of John Rutter, a description of the setting at Ely Cathedral, a listing of the singers, and an essay about madigrals. Also unlike other CDs of theirs, this one does not include the words to the songs, a missing piece that would be helpful for many of the songs.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.
This is a fun and fabulous recording.
Beautiful but perhaps overly solemn for some selections.......2002-10-19
The splendor of these arrangements and the setting confer on all of these traditional madrigals (and some newer arrangements: Side B is dominated by twentieth century arrangements) a certain solemnity and a certain stately pace (so the lyrics are not lost in the echo of the cathedral).
This leaves a strange effect on some selections, such as "Now Is The Month of Maying," which is about, um, springtime urges and here sounds oddly like a mass.
A tasteful and beautiful collection.......2001-08-21
This disc furthers my belief that madrigals are the best forum for a capella voice. Each song is unique and beautiful, and the sequencing allows a very smooth flow. Better-known works such as "Month of Maying" or "April is in my Mistress' Face" are perhaps most representative of the style, but included here are many lesser-known gems that you're sure to enjoy. The Cambridge Singers use their obviously well-honed skills to great results, from the more frivolous tracks to the darker, more solemn ones. Very highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Noel Coward at His Best.......2007-04-19
I was first introduced to Noel Coward's works "Sail Away" and "The Girl Who Came to Supper." They weren't the best of Broadway but did have some flair and great panache. Years later I purchased a recording of a British review of Coward's work called "Cowardy Custard" and began to appreciate his singularly British charm.
Now even years later and I just received "Bitter Sweet" in the mail and am in awe of Coward's breadth and scope. The score itself is on a par with "Show Boat." Now don't get me wrong, the frothy love affair of "Bitter Sweet" cannot compare to the dramatic turns in "Show Boat", but trust me--listen to the music and the orchestrations.
This is great work.
Wonderful.......2007-04-10
I caught this production on tour in 1988. twice as I enjoyed it so much.
The recording is just as good, not least for the new orchestrations by Michael Reed which give some numbers, such as 'Tell Me What is Love?' and 'Tokay' a showstopping feel.
Valerie Masterson is superb in the large role of Sarah, who is required to play ages from 18 to 70+ during the course of the show. 'Zigeuner' is beautfully poised, the Finales are deeply felt, 'What is Love?' a tour-de-force but my favourite must be 'The Call of Life', aided by the orchestrations which cut to piano near the end before the full orchestra join for the thrilling climax.
Martin Smith was a very sincere and appealing English Carl Linden in the theatre, and the decision not to attempt a Viennese accent did not detract from his performance. His is a much lighter, music theatre rather than operatic voice, and Masterson blends well with him in their duets, with 'I'll See You Again' being the obvious highlight.
Rosemary Ashe as the crowd-pleasing Manon doesn't disappoint, reinventing 'If Love Were All' from the now rather quaint-sounding delivery of Ivy St Helier in the original. Her cabaret act, a saucy French number followed by a more restrained 'Kiss Me' are delivered with great style.
Donald Maxwell (who didn't appear in the stage production) sings well in his one number, 'Tokay' complete with ringing top Ab which was added by the orchestrator.
This recording is also greatly helped by the ensemble players, such as the six girls who are Sarah's bridesmaids and later have a rather middle-aged comment on marriage, 'Alas! The Time is Past' which was cut from the stage show, perhaps to cut the length down. The 'Green Carnation' boys have also done excellent work earlier as the quartet of footmen after the party (a typical Coward lyric). The choral singing is thrilling in such numbers as 'What is Love?', 'We Wish to Order Wine' and 'Tokay'.
One of my all-time favourite nights at the theatre, this recording is one I never tire of hearing. It shows how an older show can be given new life and vitality given the right treatment.
GLORIOUS "COMPLETE" RECORDING OF A TRUE CLASSIC . . . . .......2006-07-21
NBC Radio. February 23, 1953. Marvin Miller, announcer:
"Ladies and gentlemen, The Railroad Hour. (train whistles) And here comes the star-studded show train. (Theme music: orchestra & chorus) Tonight the American Association of Railroads presents Noel Coward`s operetta, BITTER SWEET, starring Gordon MacRae and his guest, Dorothy Warenskjold. Our choir is under the direction of Norman Luboff and the music is arranged and conducted by Carmen Dragon. Yes, tonight another big musical hit is brought to you transcribed by the American Railroads, the same railroads that bring you most of the food you eat, the clothes you wear, the fuel you burn, and all the other things you use in your daily life. And now, here is our star, Gordon MacRae!"
BTV (before TV), my sisters and I would gather around the radio practically every Monday night for The Railroad Hour. It was never an "hour" show, debuting on ABC radio on October 4, 1948 with guests Dinah Shore and Jane Powell. The show was GOOD NEWS, condensed to 45 minutes. On May 2, 1949 the program switched to a 30-minute format -- SHOWBOAT with guest Lucille Norman. On October 20 of the same year it moved to NBC Radio, where it stayed through its final show on June 21, 1954 -- THE NEW MOON, also with Ms. Norman. I don't know how many of the 299 episodes I heard (a lot), but BITTER SWEET - "Coward's shameless attempt to revive sentimental operetta" - remains a particular favorite of mine.
Maybe it's because BITTER SWEET is, if anything, a nostalgic show. The heroine, Sarah Millick - now the Marchioness of Shayne - recounts her life story at a party. Forty-five years earlier, ". . .she fell so desperately in love with her handsome young singing master that she threw it all away in order to be with him. In Vienna, five poverty-stricken years later, her adored Carl is killed in a duel. But his music lives on as the self-reliant Sarah earns fame throughout Europe with her singing. Finally returning to England, she marries the elderly Marquis of Shayne who has waited so patiently for her." -- The Guide to Musical Theatre
Sure, the plot is corny, but the music is magnificent. "I'll See You Again," the theme song of the operetta, is probably Noel Coward's best known song, and a true classic. There's also the rousing "Tokay," magnificently sung by Donald Maxwell; "Dear Little Café," the Act Two duet for Sarah & Carl; the quartet "Ladies of the Town;" and "We All Wear a Green Carnation," sung by four overdressed, 1890s dandies; "Zigeuner," Sarah's big song in the final act; and my personal favorite, "If Love Were All," which includes the poignant phrase "I believe that since my life began/The most I've had is just a talent to amuse."
Noel Coward's BITTER SWEET does more than merely amuse. Its soaring melodies and sophisticated lyrics actually have the power to lift the listener to a higher, better place. The production by the New Sadler's Wells Opera is absolutely first rate, with outstanding vocal work by Valerie Masterson as Sarah, Rosemary Ashe as Manon, & the previously mentioned Donald Maxwell. I tried to like Martin Smith (Carl Linden) but would have preferred a bigger, more operatic voice - Frank Porretta would have been ideal. But it's a minor quibble. The large supporting cast of singers is also outstanding.
Very highly recommended. It's so good to hear melodies like these sung so gloriously. How unfortunate that its no longer feasible to mount shows like this (or THE GREAT WALTZ or KISMET, etc.) anymore.
Bittersweet perfection.......2003-10-13
I originally acquired this recording on vinyl in the summer of '89 during my first trip to London, & was stunned at the haunting richness of the score & the beauty of the perfomances, particularly Valerie Masterton's as Sarah. It remains one of my very favorite albums--I am listening to it again as I write this. Run, don't walk, to buy this, & discover one of the truly great gems of 20th century operetta that deserves to be staged more often.
A WONDERFUL RECORDING OF THIS CLASSIC OPERETTA........1999-08-04
Noel Coward's evocative score with it's nostalgic tribute to Viennese operetta is beautifully recorded here. A rare gem.

Mellow take on the Lips........2007-03-24
This album is very interesting. I had been a skeptic of the string tributes for a long time. I'm a huge Flaming Lips fan, so when I found this for real cheap I picked it up. It is really quite soothing. Plus all the melodies are already familiar. Definately not an essential album but a nice one anyway.

Better packaging elsewhere........2001-08-11
This is the incomparable Etta Jones (not James), but the label producing these recordings (32 Jazz) continues to re-package and re-edit them in subsequent editions. For a better all-around representation of the singer's work in the 80s and 90s (not to mention an unbeatable value), check out her album "Doin' What She Does Best." It contains most of these tracks in addition to added treasures.
she sure is!.......2000-09-20
the grand lady of jazz is back with a new cd of standards that impress even the most unschooled of jazz affeciandoes. her tremulous voice scores big time on such songs as "my man", "stardust", and "crazy he calls me". miss jones has been fronting the best musicians in the jazz world for over fifty years, but astonishingly remains one of the lesser known jazz artists. she is like a beautiful and unspoiled getaway destination that tourists have yet to discover. her impeccable choice of material only adds to her allure, choosing such composers as hoagy carmichael "georgia on my mind" gershwin and arlen "the man that got away" or brooks bowman's "east of the sun". this cd, and the entire catalogue of etta's music deserves a listen, and the praise of all who fall prey to her talent and charm.

A Wonderful Portrait.......2004-08-07
This compilation album of recitals and operatic performances featuring "her royal" Grace is long overdue. Grace Bumbry's fiery interpretations have garnered praise the world over, and this compilation features several of her calling card roles, in addition to roles many thought would put a stop to her career.
This intimate portrait of sorts allows one to hear first hand how roles such as Santuzza, Tosca, Salome, and both Aida and Amneris should be sung. Ms. Bumbry's dramatic interpretations of roles often sung by lyric sopranos give these "dramatic" heroines new life.
Of the 2 CD set, the second CD is the most valuable, for it includes several in depth interviews with "her Grace" and allows the listener to witness first hand a proud (not arrogant) diva whose self assured attitude found its way into her concert and operatic performances and sustained this singer who I feel is the greatest living mezzo/soprano of our day!
A Well Deserved Portrait.......2002-07-15
These CDs show a wonderful artist. Grace has an amazing voice and tackles several roles well. Also great is her interpretation of one of Dvorak's song cycle. The treasures in the set are the interviews which I think allow us to hear how Grace interprets her rolls and it shows a bit of sass on her part. Wonderful set for a wonderful artist.

What then is taste?.......2000-04-10
The very reason I purchased this CD was the fact that it used reconstructed Elizabethan accents; attempts at accuracy are always preferable to bowing to popular misconceptions (like in Shakespeare in Love--ack). I found this recording both aesthetically pleasing and intellectually stimulating--one can clearly see through this recording the branch-off point between the modern British and American accents, something which had always mystified me before.
Musically, this recording is full of little-known gems of the English Renaissance. This is a sample of what's on it, for Kenneth Melia: Sing a song of joy; Eliza is the fairest Queen; What then is love but mourning; Shall I sue; Heigh-ho holiday; I care not for these ladies; Mother, I will have a husband; Rest, sweet nymphs (a beautiful rendition with soaring harmonies on the chorus); and Sing we and chant it. Kenneth, if you still want a more complete list, just e-mail me (mitsuo@uclink4.berkeley.edu). But I insist that if you buy it now, without knowing all the songs, you will not be disappointed. They are subdued and genteel, with that hint of playfulness which one could say characterized the court under Elizabeth I. The vocalists are excellent, never succumbing to the operatic vocal style so popular with renditions of this repertoire, and, I think, the least authentic. Once again, Anne Azema charms with her supple, almost serpentine stylizations, and you also get a wealth of other talented vocalists who speak the Elizabethan tongue with convincing fluency. The instrumentalists play with passion and a feline subtlety that will catch you and never let go.
Why no listing of the songs?.......1999-12-04
I'll admit, right away, that I haven't heard the music on this CD. What I want to comment about is the fact that it is impossible to FIND OUT WHAT MUSIC IS ACTUALLY ON IT! I thought Amazon would have the list of songs, because I couldn't find out what they were at the local music shop. I already have a good number of Boston Camerata CD's and I wanted to find out what was on this one before I purchased it. The local store even has a software program which normally allows customers to find out what's contained on a CD if it isn't on the cover. The only listing for this CD was "songs." This isn't the first time that a Boston Camerata CD has not had the musical selections listed on the outside. Why not ALWAYS have a listing of the music on the cover? Even if it's in small font it would still be worth it. So, as of yet I haven't purchased it. How does one find out what's on it? K.Melia
Lacks that extra drop of refinement.......1999-05-23
This is a hard one to call. Brought up as I was on the ultra-modulated renditions of this and like material on Vanguard LPs by Alfred Deller and his consort, I find this Erato effort lacks that extra drop of refinement that is needed for the courtly music of the Elizabethan period. (The street and theater music might be another story, but beside the point here.) I know it is Anglophilic bias working here, but I found (for example) tenor William Hite's East Coast accent distracting. The women have accents that, while not all that appropriate, at least do not jar. It is of course true that Elizabethan English was closer to what Ringo Starr sounded like than Laurence Oliver. Play the track that contains "I care not for these ladies," which is indeed sung with a regional accent and you will see what I mean. However, in general "an Elizabetan Songbook" should sound at least what we accept today as British-sounding, if you follow. This said, I cannot fault the vocalizing or the playing. But I will still return to my Vanguard sets before playing this again. Still--who can dispute taste?
