HIStory's 2 CDs (one hits, the other new) were Jackson's attempt to connect his glorious past to a dodgy present and--given it's commercial and artistic performance--cast a shadow on his future. Conceived as his formal coronation as the "King of Pop," HIStory's second disc instead presents Jackson as an epauletted, single-gloved Richard III. By turns paranoid, angry, bitter, sentimental, and, in one instance, possibly anti-Semitic, HIStory was less a collection of songs than a case history. A few tracks--mostly those produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis--are sleek, modern pop/soul, but too much of HIStory has the overblown vacuousness of a musician who knows his time is past, but is unsure as to how to react to the situation. --Steven Mirkin

MJ the old school is stall the best. Disc 2 is on the scale of 1 so i could not give it a five star rateing. Swordsman II Sony PSOne Console

5 out of 5 stars Michael Jackson Lovers.......2007-06-27

If you're into M.K's latest and greates tunes, you will love this CD!! I listen to it a lot more then most of my cd that are collecting dust.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad but...........2007-02-20

How many times people have to pay for Michael Jackson greatest hits album? Come on this should have been a single disc album. I already bought all of his old albums! Anyway I review the new songs there.
I liked They Don't Care About Us, Stranger In Moscow, Earth Song, You Are Not Alone, Come Together, and Little Susie. They are all excellent tracks and I enjoyed them greatly. Scream, This Time Around, History, 2 Bad, and Smile are all average songs acceptable as filler
D.S., Money, Childhood , and Tabloid Junkie are very much junk.
Please Michael we all know you need privacy and tabloids are not treating you right and you had a "bad" childhood. I am sick and tired of hearing these type of songs over and over which are similar to old ones. So please stop nagging and make unique music

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Makes History.......2007-01-16

The title of the album is very appropriate. With the first CD giving us a blast from the past of amazing songs, and the second disk pulling us into the future. Many people have complained about the second disk, but I find that the songs on it are quite brilliant. The first song, Scream, is one of the most original songs of the nineties. It has a sound you won't find anywhere else, and the brother/sister duo mix their vocals extremely well. The second track, They Dont Really Care About Us, is so passionate and stimulating. You almost can't help turning up the volume. Stranger in Moscow is one of the most beautiful songs MJ's written, and its production is top notch. Earth Song is THE most beautiful song he's done, and it has a feel that gives you goosebumps. Overall, the album is one of the best I've heard. Some people critisize it for being too angry, but the anger gives the songs a passion and a depth that other artists lack. Its definitely worth the money for this deep and interesting work of art.

5 out of 5 stars HIStory Is Great.......2006-12-27

The media has attacked this album since day one! Why? Well, the reason is that this album is viciously attacking the media! After they tried to destroy Mr. Jackson with the FAL$E 1993 Allegations. This is Michael's most heart-felt album & definitely one of my favorites. The album still sold 18 Million Copies (36 Million Disks) worldwide.

This album mixes anger for injustice, racial equality, saving the planet and love. It is a truly wonderful album & Mike expands his musical abilities by producing the whole album and playing most of the instruments on the album.

Since rededicating himself in 1997 to bluegrass, the music into which he was born, Kentucky native son Ricky Skaggs has re-established himself as one of the most talented and inspired figures in the music's immensely crowded front ranks. History of the Future is not as thematically ambitious as previous releases, such as the 2000 tribute Big Mon: The Songs of Bill Monroe. Instead, it's an energetic hodgepodge of bluegrass oldies such as "Shady Grove" and "Mother's Only Sleeping" and a handful of fine new songs, including the Paul Overstreet-penned "Halfway Home Café," "One Way Track" (an early Skaggs original dusted off from his long-gone days in the band Boone Creek), and "Too Far Down to Fall," in which Skaggs and his band catch a remarkable groove. As overly familiar as some of these bluegrass classics are, they nonetheless demonstrate what a powerhouse supergroup Skaggs has assembled in Kentucky Thunder. The band even manages to supercharge moldy oldies such as "Rollin' in My Sweet Baby's Arms" and "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke, and Loud Music"--subtly redefining them for the 21st century. --Bob Allen

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly bluegrass.......2003-06-13

Put the chitlins on, Pa. Butter up the cornbread, I'm coming home for supper. Tell that boy Ricky to dust off his mandolin. Mercy, it's pure stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Geez...this guy is INCREDIBLE!.......2002-10-07

The hallmark of Ricky Skaggs music is flawless top shelf bluegrass taken to the absolute limits of perfection and this CD is no exception. The guy sings and plays the mandolin with effortless perfection. The old school bluegrass standards on this CD take on a fresh flavor and if you're a mandolin lover, you'll probably wear the 50,000 mile warrenty off this CD the first week.

5 out of 5 stars Skaggs Offers Another Impeccable Bluegrass Album.......2002-04-27

Skagg's latest release has a little of everything: Something old (terrific arrangment of the chestnut "Shady Grove"), something new (the instrumental tribute to his Celtic roots "The Road to Spencer"), something borrowed (a remake of his "One Way Track" from his Boone Creek days) and something blue (the tragic lost love of "Too Far Down to Fall"--complete with a bass line borrowed from "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'").

Skaggs is still one of the brightest stars in bluegrass music today and this album is a welcome addition to any fan's collection who appreciates solid picking and singing. Some critics have argued how many more renditions do we need of "Sawin' on the Strings" or "Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms." My answer is at least one more if Ricky Skaggs is involved with the project. If I had to single out one word to describe Skaggs' music, it would be "integrity." HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2002-04-22

What an excellent CD! His best ever. I was captivated from the very beginning with the opening bars of "Shady Grove". Ricky and his band absolutely smoke on this cut and it sets the tone of great musicianship for the entire album. The band switches gears from smoking on "Shady Grove" to an Irish feel on the fabulous "Road to Spencer". And the thought provoking lyrics to "Half Way Home Cafe" really cut like a knife.

This CD will be one that you play over and over and is proof that even though Ricky "went country" for a number of years he did not forget how to do it. Helping his cause is the fact, that unlike many bluegrass artists, he has the money and commands the fees that allow him to hire some of the best young pickers in the business as well as being able to afford ample studio time. This can't hurt, but the final product is what counts. And this album has that great artistry and feeling that can't be bought.

5 out of 5 stars Histoy of the Future.......2002-02-22

Ricky and his band are top notch musicians and have magawatts of energy! This is a great toe-tapping music!

The Promised Land posse has connections with folks like LTJ Bukem and Goldie. That means this double-disc compilation of drum 'n' bass notables is top quality and well worth investigating. Disc one is mixed by Mo' Wax recording artist Peshay, while the second has cuts by Roni Size, DJ Crystl, Code Blue, and even our man Bukem. Once again, Promised Land has released some of the most progressive electronic dance music around. Peshay's work is loaded with interesting string and horn arrangements as well as atypical beats and soulful vocals mixed over jazzified keyboard riffs. This collection sails clean and direct to the heart of the dance floor, and the time spent on Metalheadz and Mo' Wax has had a positive impact on Peshay's swinging sound. --Mitch Myers

This is an excellent CD. The first one is somewhat different from
the first two CDs in the series. However, this is the best CD in
the series. The mix moves from jazzy tunes to more groovy tunes
back and forth. Therefore, you are not faced with monotone sound,
and you always feel the change. The tunes carry you through an
amazing seventy minutes. Definite buy!

5 out of 5 stars Dope-Ass Drum N Bass.......1999-02-11

This CD is dope. Disc 2 is the best because it is classic Jungle. The drum n bass has a jazzy tempo, but disc 2 is slammin. This is definitely a CD to pick up.

5 out of 5 stars Just as good as the rest.......1998-11-25

If you liked the other volumes you will like this one for sure. The second disc is a departure from the normal promised land groove, but they are very cool. Worth buying, for sure.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch Techno, not to be missed!.......2005-07-13

Jooris Voorn is a seriously talented Techno producer. This is an incredibly consistent album, not a dud track on it. Track of the moment, 'Incident' is a good indicator to the style of this album. No doubt some of the best Detroit techno I've heard in while. If you are a Jeff Mills or Detroit Techno fan in general, do not miss this album. This album is also a great intro to this style of techno. If you are a fan of electronica or dare I say a Trance fan, widen your horizons and give this CD a listen!

5 out of 5 stars The future of Techno starts here.......2005-02-21

This CD gives you that feeling back of your first rave party. Remember Carl Cox in the old days? Or how about Steve Rachmad with Tons of Tones? A little Detroit techno mixed with warm tonal soundscapes. There is really not one song on this CD I don't like. This one doesn't come cheap but I'm sure it will stay in your cd-player for a long time.

      3 out of 5 stars Reading "History".......2004-12-28

Bill Doss of Olivia Tremor Control sets out on a new music journey: The Sunshine Fix. The debut EP "Future History of a Sunshine Fix" isn't experimental, and only a little psychedelic, but Doss should stick to the pop tunes and avoid the alt-country.

A retro flavor runs through the fast-paced "Sound's Around You (Oh No It Isn't Cried the Little Lord Funkleroy)," followed by the bizarrely beautiful "Many Keys To a Reunion." Then Doss's apparent liking for alt-country kicks in: "Last Night I Had a Dream (Said I Had a Dream Last Night)" is a jarring experience after the indie-rock that starts off the EP.

The well-named "Future History and the Irrelevance of Time" inches back into psychedelic indie-rock turf, with ripply keyboard and distorted vocals. "Beaconary Words..." ends the album on a rather lackluster note, pairing Doss's vocals with a slow-moving melody that turns country somewhere along the way.

Do. Not. Expect. The. Olivia Tremor Control. After the excellent Elephant 6 experimental psychedelica group broke up, turning into Circulatory System (Will Cullen Hart) and the Sunshine Fix (Doss). And it's pretty obvious that Doss is more into the slow melodies and pop than the psychedelica, as well as a surprising liking for... alt country. Somehow I wish he had stuck to the druggy drones and fast-paced Motown-y stuff.

Since Doss was the drummer, his solos tend to be one of the most memorable things -- he doesn't push them front-and-center, except in "Many Keys to Reunion," where he stretches one solo almost to the breaking point. The banjo and acoustic guitar aren't nearly as imaginative, but the hazy, drawling synth in the penultimate track is very atmospheric.

"The Future History of a Sunshine Fix" is a mix of alt-country and semi-psychedelic pop, but only one of them really succeeds. Worth checking out, since Doss's solo venture has promise.

      1 out of 5 stars HUGE Disappointment.......2001-11-23

It is now painfully obvious how vital Bill Doss and Will Hart were to each other, and how the whole of the now apparently defunct Olivia Tremor Control was greater than the sum of its parts.

Bill Doss's new effort is a total dud. If this EP is the best he can do these days, then I feel sorry for him, because it is a gigantic step down from OTC's masterful output. Despite the band name "Sunshine Fix" (taken from an early OTC song of the same name) and the obviously psychedelic-looking album cover (TOO obvious and cheesy in my view), this EP has none of the elements that made OTC great.

Am I expecting this new band to be OTC version II? No. But I did expect at least some of Doss's former talents to shine through. The great melodies. The studio wizardry. The imagination. The unpredictability.

All of that has been replaced with mainly simple three-chord jams, two of which are country-style. Ugh. I don't mind country if it has some class and/or bite, but this stuff is just so pedestrian it is painful. And on top of that, Doss sounds out of key! What happened to the guy's voice??

"The Many Keys To Reunion" is a long, boring exercise in percussion that says "filler" written all over it. Filler on a five-song EP? Yes. Filler. And this from the guy whose former band put out 27-track epics, with at least 15-16 proper songs (none of them filler) in between interesting sound collages and experiments.

What happened, Bill? After loving your previous works, your new efforts really let me down.

4 out of 5 stars This half of The Olivia Tremor Control packs twice the punch.......2001-04-10

"The" Bill Doss, who crafted some excellent tunes along with Will Cullen Hart as The Olivia Tremor Control, flexes his songwriting muscles here. The first track, "The Sound's Around You," harks back to 1970s Motown music with its high-pitched vocals and urgent-sounding beat. "The Many Keys to a Reunion" is the EP's only disappointment, basically a drum solo that sounds like Doss is stretching too far to craft different-sounding tunes. The next three tunes, though, make the listener grateful for Doss' stretch for songwriting diversity. "Last Night I Had a Dream" is a tongue-in-cheek, bluegrass-sounding number, and "Future History and the Irrelevance of Time," the EP's best track, is classic mid-tempo psychedelic music, with drugged-out-sounding synthesizers and the same high-pitched vocal as the EP's first song. "Beaconary Words" is alt.country, and gets a bit tedious after a few bars. Nevertheless, if this EP is a sign of things to come from A Sunshine Fix, "The" Bill Doss easily will surpass the impressive achievements of his former band. Keep your eye on this band.

4 out of 5 stars Bill Doss of OTC records a great album..........2000-09-20

Great album. TOns of diversity (versus OTC). Quite a talent.
