Great modern dub compilation.......2006-03-24

This is hands-down one of the best compilation CD's I have ever purchased. I like the way it takes a very broad definition of "dub" (tending mostly toward the modern, electronic side of the genre), and consistently surprises the listener with the many different approaches to dub music that are out there. There's spacey ambient dub, beat-heavy dance dub, more traditional reggae-inflected dub, dub featuring various other ethnic musical influences, lyrics on some tracks & pure instrumentals on others, and even an old Bob Marley tune revamped for the new century. Every track has something interesting to offer.

Special mention must be made of the first track, "Cocaine in My Brain." To me, this track alone was worth the price of the compilation, as it was lodged in my head for weeks after buying this disc. A damn fine tune, and the rest of the CD lives up to the standard of qualilty it sets from the getgo. If you like modern dub, this CD has many gems waiting to be discovered.

this cd is a very uneven mix. various artists compilations can certainly tend that way, and this one goes to the extreme. there are 4 cuts i like on this one, and a lot that's pretty weak, in my opinion. the strengths:
smith & mighty; black star liner; g. corp remix of bob marley; seeed. but i think it's worth it for the strength of those 4, at least for myself as a dj. i would probably have bought it just for the marley remix alone, to be honest. & "million deadtongues" by seeed is very fine. one needs a relatively broad definition of "dub" to get into this comp--it's definitely more new school, as much as one can generalize about such an uneven collection of songs.
