From URB Magazine
Remember the days, long ago, when you'd be walking down the sunny sidewalk and the daisies would smile at you? When warm oak trees waved their huge green hands and blew leaves like coy kisses across your path? When even the blades of grass seemed to sway in perfect time with every step you took? Like an electronic pied piper, Global Goon gathers all these feelings together and floats them back at you as downtempo electro grooves and some of the most original, captivating melodies in electronic music today.
Vatican Nitez, the third album by Goon-ie Jonny Hawk, effervesces with the pure sonic happiness that characterized his previous effort, 1998's excellent Cradle of History, but with a tinge of darkness: Call it the weighted complexity of leaving behind those sunny days and embracing the harder realities of today's home-listening electronic music, where wholesale sampling and break pilfering constitute the bulk of what's available. Fuck that; the lead-off "Business Man" saunters out with delicate timpani-like percussion and a muted loop before volleying Goon's warbly electro hand-saw melody, and it's a dreamy one at that. Likewise, check "I'm on the 73," a synth-y four-count pop groove that repeatedly breaks down into digital drum madness before composing itself under said groove. "Kreem Ballet" and "!" sound most like Cradle, a bit simpler and predictable in their melodic progressions - and thus enjoyable for that reason. The only complaint: it's not nearly long enough; the Goon has again left us waiting for more memories of those wonderful sunny days long since gone.

Pop-like Ambient.......2002-05-31
This CD has me hooked! It took several listens to really appreciate the quality and enjoy all that it offers. Even the weaker tracks flow nicely with the rest of the album. The stand-out track for me is "Scott Cronce is the CEO" -- to die for!
well done to the hawk.......2002-04-23
what is there to say? quite the most beautiful chill out album to come out of england since aphex twins SAW I. The beats dripping with luscious heavy reverb, amazing, soaring, heavenly melodies weaving in and out of organic sounds. An album for coming down from acid highs, deep, thoughtful, beautiful, strange. Probably rephlex's finest release. get it!
Excellent stuff.......2002-04-08
Not really well-known, but definately well-made. This stuff has all of the qualities of an Aphex Twin Album plus some of that melodious catchy stuff that's sometimes lacking with Aphex Twin and never lacking with Global Goon. This CD is definately downtempo, but creates a simple but excellent mood throughout the album. Highly suggested for any downtempo/Aphex Twin fans. Even if you don't like that stuff, you still might like this.
ooh lovely.......2002-03-09
so, you like aphex, you bought geogaddi by the boards of canada, what else is there, try vatican nitez by global goon- its incredible braindance, massively beautiful and weirdly strange. not 1 filler track on this beautiful release.
decent release from rephlex records.......2002-02-19
global goon describes himself as downtempo leftfiel electronic braindance. whatever that means, it's good. the global goon creates another bizarre cartoon world with his tracks, with heavy use on the synth notes. perhaps too heavy. for those a fan of synthy idm, this album is a treat, though it's welcome wears thin at times. of course, this is when he introduces great tracks to catch your attention once again. 'business man' is a track that works hip-hop and fun beat-slaying over the course of the track. the next few tracks are hardly noticeable until 'stan's slaves' hits the track, creating a more uptempo boards of canada type of track, with wonderful hooks and crooks to steal your ears away for the duration. it ends, sadly, on a track called 'globy dubes, champeen of all americky'. this album leaves you expecting more of the tracks, which makes the end of the album a disappointment except for a few highlights. it's almost as if it is all build and no deliver at times. the tracks are well produced, however, and songs in themselves good, but not breathtaking by any means.
