A brief glance at the packaging for this recording might make you think New Age, and indeed this label normally offers recordings in that vein. The disc's cover tells nothing about the music inside--all we see are the ruins of an ancient abbey, the moon in the sky on the front, the sun on the back. But wait. If you get far enough to listen to the recording, you'll find one of the most beautiful and beautifully programmed choral recordings in the catalog. The compositions, organized into the categories "Music of the Morning Rite" and "Music of the Evening Rite," are mostly from 16th- century composers--Byrd, Taverner, Sheppard, White--with a few Gregorian chants and a gorgeous rendition of the 20th-century motet by Duruflé, "Ubi caritas." Conductor/choral music legend John Rutter has assembled a program that's both uplifting and restful; the performance is faultless. One could only complain about the short (39 and a half minutes) playing time. --David Vernier

Choral work at it's finest........2007-06-03
I really enjoyed this work. I was first introduced to this title through American Gramophone's website and was also my first introduction in the works of John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers. You do not have be religious to enjoy this work. I find the music uplifting and very sublime. I have listened to it many times, and I find that my favorite period to play it is in the morning hours. .
I have since purchased many other Rutter titles including "Images of Christ", and more recently "Lighten our Darkness"
Love it.......2007-05-02
13 years ago, I had the tape of brother sun, sister moon and as a teenager and I would play it every night as I slept, I loved it. I dont know what happened to it and I have ever sence been looking for it, and I just baught the CD and am so excited.
Light and shadows.......2003-07-29
Recorded in the Great Hall of University College School, London, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a true masterpiece in 'Brother Sun, Sister Moon' in 1988. The title derives from a famous prayer by St. Francis of Assisi, and is inspired by liturgical music from (or derivative of) the Middle Ages and Renaissance polyphony and Gregorian chant. The music is meditative, uplifting, and elegant in simplicity and stunning vocal quality.
--Brother Sun--
The first half of the disc is largely composed of pieces from the liturgical Morning Prayer cycle, concentrating on texts from Easter, the most important of Christian days. From the Alleluia to the Acclamations and Surrexit Christus Hodie (Christ is risen today), the flow from Gregorian Chant to compositions by Byrd, Taverner and Palestrina (giants of this type of music) in increasing energy and glory, as befits both a Morning service (time to wake up!) as well as a celebration of the resurrection of Christ. Perhaps of particular note here is the cantoring of bass Gerald Finley in the Easter Acclamations.
--Sister Moon--
The second half of the disc concentrates on music of the evening; in particular, the Compline service, a service of unwinding and sombre meditation with which monastic communities conclude their days of work and worship. Many churches have reincorporated Compline into a regular cycle of services; some have even done so as a result of exposure to this recording. The music here is softer and less energetic than that of Morning prayer. This includes music from Whyte and Sheppard (also masters of the Medieval-to-Renaissance liturgical polyphony) as well as a brilliant motet by twentieth century composer Duruflé for the Ubi Caritas.
--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words, in both Latin and English, for each of the pieces recorded here. It has an excerpt from a prayer by St. Francis, and a basic introduction to the music relating it historically and liturgically. One thing conspicuously missing is any biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the basic listing of singers.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. For this particular recording, the choir consisted of eleven sopranos, six altos, six tenors, and six basses.
Cambridge Singers = Quality.......2002-05-23
I do love this cd, but tend to play certain tracks as my first love is chant. I play the Victimae Paschali Laudes in the car and sing along - it is so very beautiful that this rendition of this Easter Chant is worth purchasing this cd alone. I love that one track so much, my only criticism of the cd is that I wish they'd centered the entire cd on chant - and I hope they will do one like that in the future because the quality of the voices is stunning.
American Gramaphone, please reissue this title........2000-03-30
I originally obtained this CD through Minnesota Public Radio. The first time I listened to the Ubi Caritus, I was moved to tears. The CD became my favorite to play at Christmas and other times. I gave the CD to a friend who has moved to Oregon, deeply regret that it is no longer in production.
John Rutter trains his singers to sing without vibrato, and blends their voices with such balance that they come together as a single instrument. The selection on this CD is perfect to demonstrate the clarity and richness of this ensemble. If American Gramaphone does reissue this title, I will be first in line to purchase it.

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12
This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!
The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

Album Description
94 Baker St, (RPM 270) , the Pop Psych Sounds from the Apple Era has been one of the RPM catalogue's strongest sellers in recent years. Thus with the assistance of, the author of the History of the Beatles Apple Organization book, we have constructed a second volume. The Apple Music publishing company was first into battle for the new organisation, making its initial signings in mid 1967, in fact before the company even got to 94 Baker St. Over the next two years they demo'd many writers and placed recordings where possible. Inevitably given the amount recorded much remained unissued and we are happy to be able to give many of those songs a well deserved airing. Highlights includes four more previously unissued Iveys tracks, the first recordings of Gallagher & Lyle, and the cult Bachdenkel who provide the title track. The sleeve notes are a lovingly documented essay by Stefan Granados including many rare pics and memorabilia.
Customer Reviews:
(No)-Hit-and-Miss Collection.......2007-06-27
Two things you need to know before ordering this disc:
- Most tracks were taken from acetates and the sound quality is very dicey;
- There is a reason you've never heard any of these songs.
That having been said, there are a few amusing tracks but most are lackluster 1968 "product". This is for devoted fans of soft Brit psych-pop. Wait for a used copy under $12 to pop up and you'll probably feel that you've gotten your money's worth.
Fine Second Volume of Obscure Apple Recordings!.......2006-05-07
This is the second volume of recordings of songs by writers signed to the Beatles Apple Music Publishing company. Though most of the artists contributing to the CD are pretty obscure with a very limited recorded material behind them, there are a few exceptions.
The Iveys, who later changed their name to Badfinger, are represented with four mod-inspired recordings quite unlike the material they originally released the group. Though all very much time-pieces quite interesting material, with Pete Ham's "Black and White Rainbows" as the strongest track.
George Alexander of Grapefruit wrote two songs for the CD; none of them recordings by Grapefruit, but both among the strongest recordings on the CD.
Songwriting team Gallagher and Lyle wrote four songs; three of them their own demos. Quite obvious that they were already at that time great songwriters. The Hollies sounding tracks "Technicolour Dream" and "Ivy Unrehearsed" are my favourites.
The obscure band "The U No Who" who later turned into "Bachdenkel", deliver some of the very best recordings to the CD. Quite amazing that Apple did not offer the band a contract. Their title-track "An Apple a Day" is a very catchy song; their music both melodic and complex. Their other two at least as strong.
All in all a fine collection of music from the 1968-69 psychedelic years in British pop-music.

This is one of the most original and musically satisfying Christmas programs on disc. And it features some of the most characterful and proficient ensemble singing you'll find anywhere. It's not that the music is obscure--in fact, most of the texts and/or tunes are familiar. From early American settings of "While shepherds watched" and "The Apple Tree" to traditional Austrian and English carols such as "Still, still, still," and "Greensleeves" (sung to different-than-usual words), we're treated to outstanding arrangements (by Paul Hillier) and often surprising variations of tunes we thought we knew. In several cases--"While shepherds watched" and "Hark! The herald angels sing," for example--the familiar texts are sung to completely different melodies. Highlights include original carols by Charles Ives and Jean Sibelius, and a starkly beautiful setting of "There is no rose" by Hillier. --David Vernier

Give it 6 stars.......2005-10-27
This is a wonderful collection of Carols from around the world, beautifully performed by the Theater of Voices. I don't know what CD the first reviewer heard, because this one doesn't contain strident voices - the choir is very well blended, and the soloists are outstanding. I highly recommend it.
It is hard to choose best tracks, as they are so varied and well done, but my personal favorites are Gaudete, Personent Hodie and the four german tracks. The women's choir does especially well on Still, O Himmel, authentically capturing the sound of an Austrian choir.
Excellent.......2003-12-10
This is beautifully directed and performed. Some people truly have the gift of music, TOV is on the top of the list.
Dazzling Sound.......2003-10-25
A thrilling collection of carols, mostly new to me, and beautifully sung. Listen to the first sample, Read's "Shepherds," to see what I mean. This has my favorite rendition of "Personent Hodie" (from Piae Cantiones). I now watch for more recordings by Paul Hillier and his ensembles.
Not your generic Christmas album.......2002-12-01
This has become one of my favorite Christmas discs. An unusual selection of carols, lovely arrangements (Shepherd's Star is stunning!), and the human voice the only featured instrument. Well worth the purchase
Bad performances, OK repertoire.......2002-10-21
Most of the reviews of this CD focus on the diverse repertoire performed on this recording. The diversity of repertoire on this CD, unfortunately, does not make up for the absolutely HORRIBLE singing given by the choir.
The choir's sound is often very strident, vowels are sometimes strikingly spread, the sopranos sing the correct pitches sometimes, etc. The first thing I was struck with when I listened to the first CD track was how nasal sounding the choir's tone was and how they were not in tune with each other. The choir's lack of attention to tuning and balance is mostly illustrated in the faster, rhythmic pieces, when the choir barrels through each selection with about as much attention to musicality as a dog might at dinner time. Even the slower pieces, though, are significantly unbalanced, and sung with a shrill timbre.
This is one of the worst choral CDs in my collection...soon to be OUT of my collection.

Best Christmas CD available.......2003-12-29
This enthralling CD is the best one out there. The arrangements and performances are top-notch. I only wonder why Naxos has chosen to make all the performances anonymous with its lack of liner notes. Only by going to the Naxos website can you find who is performing what. Among the choirs you will hear on this beautiful CD are the Worcester Cathedral Choir (4 numbers), the Elora Festival Singers (10 numbers) and the Tewkesbury Abbey Choir (6 numbers). If you only have one Christmas CD, this is the one to have.
best christmas music-on one cd!.......2003-07-27
I am a christmas music fanatic. On this cd there are all, plus more, of the songs that I love. It starts with "once in royal david's city",thats sung by a choir and a treble. All the solos on this cd are absolutely amazing. Whether it is by a treble or a man chorister. All the emotions for the songs are right on. Most are sung by the cathedral or abbey choirs. Thats the only thing that bothers me, they don't give you any information on the performers. But I recognize a lot of them. I think Trinity is also on it. but really-its just beautifull. I have no words for it. The price isn't much, if you love christmas music buy it!
Beautiful angel voices.......2002-12-11
I played this at work and EVERY person that passed my desk wanted to know what, who and where. By far one of the most moving collections of Christmas music I have ever heard and I have a collection of over a hundred Christmas Albums and CDs.

Customer Reviews:
I could go either way on this.......2006-03-09
This cd I really could say it's good and not so good. Half of the tracks like The Otherside and Buffalo Billy Can, are just great, and others like Doctor Rock i could really live without. It has liek 2 totally diffrent feels to it. but the songs that are good are definatly worth the buying the cd.
Solid English psych-pop.......2002-10-10
I'm not sure what the previous reviewer expected when ordering this CD and then calling it "ABSOUTELY (sic) AWFUL", but this is prime UK 60's psych-pop. Not exactly THE greatest album of all time, but still very good and highly entertaining. It would be interesting to know exactly WHAT the reviewer found so awful about this album...
The album is a blend of heavy R&B (á la The Yardbirds, which they do two covers of, by the way) and slightly whimsy UK psychedelia. The stand out track - The Otherside - is one of the greatest singles of British psychedelia, issued as the B-side of Doctor Rock in 1968.
The single versions aren't very interesting and doesn't differ much from the album versions, except they're in mono. It's a pity that their last single Thank You Very Much / Your Heart Is Free Just Like The Wind wasn't tacked on as bonus tracks though.
ABSOUTELY AWFUL.......2002-01-12
This album is so bad I can't even express it in words. One thing I can tell you is unless you are some casualty from the sixties DO NOT BUY THIS CD!! I made the mistake of following the preivous review and it was a waste of money. This is the worst example of "psychedelic" music I've ever heard. I was trying to expand my horizons and take a chance on something I never heard and boy am I sorry. I'll never do that again. As far as the last review goes that person must have been in this horrible band and is looking for the royalties. I can't explain any other way.
Exquisite British psychedelic rock.......2000-07-03
Formed in London in 1968, Apple led by lead guitarist Rob Ingram and vocalist Denis Regan recorded only one album during their short tenure, but what an album it is. Repertoire Records has compiled all 12 tracks from the original lp along with both sides of the two singles the band released on Larry Page's Page One Records, a total of 16 tracks and 52 minutes playing time of pure, unadulterated classic British psychedelic rock. Nealy every track is a highlight in and of itself, but particular standouts are the single b-side "The Otherside," a Yardbirds cover "Psycho Daisies" and a Lovin' Spoonful Cover "Sporting Life." All three of these tracks contain exceptional guitar work from Ingram. Another standout is the b-side "Buffalo Billycan" again due to Ingram's work. The album was released with very little label support and failed to chart as did the singles and thus Apple lasted only a short time, as has been the fate of so many other talented bands. Thankfully "An Apple A Day" remains as proof positive of the band's tremendous talent. Fans of psychedelic rock and rock in general should do themselves a favor and snatch this one up, it is a prime example of how exciting guitar-driven psychedelic rock can be.
Incredible.......2000-03-27
This is a lost treasure of psychedelia. Currently, the original vinyl is very, very rare and, of course, very expensive. But buy the CD edition and you won't regret! Incredible psych blues pieces (the two Yardbird's covers, "Psycho Daisies" and "Rock Me Baby"), and excellent and unpredictable 100% psychedelic songs ("The Otherside", "Buffalo Byllican", "Doctor Rock", "Mr. Jones"), make this album a masterpiece.

Uneven, though heavenly sound.......2005-12-22
I am enjoying this CD, however I must continually adjust the sound level. Some selections are recorded quite low and some are quite loud. I am constantly reaching for the volume.
An Outstanding Holiday Recording.......2005-11-19
In 1994 I worked at a music store where I was considered "the classical music expert." How did I earn this distinguished honor you may ask? Well, I had music lessons as a child, had a somewhat good knowledge of classical music as a hobbyist (I am a die hard opera buff and love the symphonic repertoire too), and I was the oldest sales person in the store. I was in my early thirties but most of the other employees were either in or recent graduates of high school. Since I could answer a few basic questions, I was the expert. I was also the jazz expert, movie sound track expert, easy listening expert, and vocals expert. If my life depended on my expertise of these areas, I wouldn't be writing this review right now, but that's another story.
The manager asked me to select some Christmas CD's for the store and in the catalogue, I saw that there would be a new release by The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under Sir Neville Marriner's direction. I had not heard the disc and we did not have a sample, but I had a hunch it would be well received and since the store catered to customers who loved good music, I figured that the recording would be well received. I remember when it arrived and we put it on the store stereo. From the church bells at the beginning to the first simple tunes of the disc, I knew this would be a great collection of holiday music. Customers agreed. It received airtime on the local classical station and we could not keep it in stock.
Since that time CHRISTMAS WITH THE ACADEMY has been a staple in my Christmas collection. It has three major strengths. First, the wonderful orchestra and beautiful chorus of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under the direction of founder Sir Neville Marriner. Second, there is a variety of carols and traditional holiday music. We hear tracks we would expect from an English ensemble, but we also hear those wonderful melodies that when performed well add so much to this season. Third would be the overall excellence of this recording. This great ensemble has produced excellent music over the years and this collection is simply another example of its quality.
I loved the recording when it was new, but now it has become a classic. For anyone who loves good holiday music that is performed well and has the spiritual quality that is so much a part of the season, this is a disc you will love.
I love it.......2004-12-15
This is excellent Christmas music. Of the choir Christmas music I have heard, I think this is great because there seems to be such a great balance between the male and female singers. Its exactly how I'd want Christmas carolers to sound. If you like how the music previews sound then you will like this cd.
Magnificent.......2003-11-29
If I could only have one Christmas CD, this would be my choice. The harmonies are exquisite. The instrumentals are beautiful. There are several a cappella sections, which I love. This Christmas concert is a masterpiece. It is one of the few CD's with enough presence to evoke the feeling of "being there". I feel as though I'm sitting in a church, listening to the most wondrous choir.
This 60 minute CD was recorded digitally [DDD], so I had no concern about the quality of remastering. I found the CD audio quality to be very acceptable. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves choral Christmas music.
few compare.......2001-11-23
Few Christmas music CD's can compare to this entry by Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. As the previous reviewer notes, there is nothing startlingly new or insightful about this program--but its sheer excellence sets it apart.
From the opening bells to the shattering conclusion of "Hark! the Herald Angel Sing," the listener encounters the kind of great music Marriner is known for. This stuff is precise though not dry, clean though not clinical. It is like seeing a beautiful painting in perfect clarity after having had it shrouded in a fog for years.
The soul of these songs are clarified by the interpretations they receive here. The joy they proclaim to the world can be palpably felt by the listener. My personal favorites here are: "Hark! the Herald Angels Sing," "Il Est né, le divin enfant," and "Away in a Manger."
You need look no further if you want some great music to listen to and contemplate during this or any other holiday season. This is a great disc.
I merrily recommend "Christmas with the Academy."

Originally recorded between 1964 and 1985, this generous 2-CD compilation ranges from carols dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries to timeless, mostly traditional popular favorites. The arrangers include such eminent composers as Vaughan Williams, Gustav and Imogene Holst, Arthur Sullivan, Peter Cornelius, and Felix Mendelssohn, as well as the Choir's own Directors, David Wilcocks and Philip Ledger. The 50 carols are carefully chosen for maximum contrast of tempo, mood and character; the settings, too, endeavor to create variety of texture and dynamics between the often numerous verses by alternately using solos and choruses, male, female and combined voices, creating cumulative build-ups, and adding a descant to the final strophe. However, even all these techniques and devices tend to become predictable, so it may be advisable to enjoy the program in judicious doses. Among these riches, listeners will find their own favorites, but it may be worth noting that "Silent Night" appears twice, once in English and once in German, and that two of the most famous carols--"O come, all ye faithful" and "Hark! The herald angels sing"--are accompanied by a very loud brass band playing fanfares with incongruous, "up-dated" harmonies--the only false note in the program. By contrast, the organ, employed in several introductions, as well as to provide powerful chordal support and all kinds of tinkling, bell-like effects never seems out of style or character. The singing is splendid. Basically "white," without vibrato, the sound has a wonderfully pure, truly celestial quality, but can rise to full, rich, ringing sonorities in the climaxes. Intonation, balance and ensemble are impeccable, the soloists are excellent. The reverberant acoustics of the Chapel of King's College, where the recordings were made, cushion the voices without obscuring the clarity of the lines. --Edith Eisler

CD 1 Wrong Music.......2004-12-21
I put the CD in and was met by club music, I thought maybe it was some strange take on "Morning in the City of David" nope, the CD had been burned with the wrong image. I sent it back and received a new copy, it had the same issue. I listened to the second CD and loved ever moment of it, but until EMI/Amazon can rectify this issue, I cannot fairly rate it.

Customer Reviews:
Best Christmas album ever.......2006-12-27
I found this album quite by accident in a college bookstore in a small town outside of Toronto. We played it (June!) on our way to Northern Ontario, gasped at its beauty, read the liner notes, and discovered that we were actually passing by Elora! On our return trip, we stopped in at Elora and learned more about the singers and the festival. This album is so remarkable in its clarity, sensitivity, and variety, that it ranks as my all-time favorite Christmas album. The family members and friends to whom I have since given this CD share my enthusiasm for this magical Christmas tour.
LOVELY!!!!.......2006-02-25
Maybe I'm a LITTLE bit prejudiced in favor of this fine album because it contains some of my favorite Christmas songs, or because it also has some of the beautiful songs my choral group sang last Christmas -- whatever -- The Elora Festival Singers, with Noel Edison and Michael Bloss and everyone else involved in creating this CD, do a wonderful job of transmitting the holy, joyful, festive AND secular air of that special season.
I especially loved "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day" and will probably wear out that track long before I wear out the rest of this fine CD.
It is almost March, and I'm still playing this CD. I may end up getting a second copy.
A very lovely Christmas disc.......2000-08-29
According to the notes, the Elora Festival Singers is a professional chamber choir founded in 1980 by their director, Noel Edison. The name comes from a musical festival given every summer in Elora, Ontario. They have performed on the Canadian Broadcasting System, and given concerts in Eastern Canada and the United States. They are now the professional core group of the famous Toronto Mendelssohn Choir.
They are a very competent choir, singing everything on this disc with ease and beauty. Most of the carols are pretty well known, and include some from Canada, England, France, Holland and Poland. There are the 'Huron Carol,' 'O Come All Ye Faithful,' 'Harold Darke's 'In the Bleak Mid Winter," "Ding Dong Merrily on High,' 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing,' and some less common ones. The less usual items include Honegger's 'Laudate Dominum' and Poulenc's 'Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël,' which are performed very simply and effectively.
The Elora Festival Singers is not apparently a very large group, but the reverberant recording makes them sound larger. Their excellent diction is not obscured, and the sound is very smooth.
The organ accompaniment by Michael Bloss are very effective, and include some room filling bass, although it is not super low.
The music ranges from the more peaceful and meditative to the more dramatic, and the choir conveys the varying moods of the music. The recording is quite lovely.
