Here's another to join the parade of page-to-stage musicals inspired by 19th-century fiction. This ambitious adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's haunting classic Jane Eyre for the musical theater seems to be part of a trend represented most famously by Les Misérables. It also reflects the increasing pressure to schedule an original cast recording release as close as possible to a new show's Broadway opening: in this case, in fact, the CD was both recorded and released prior to the show's opening in December 2000 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. But what's most significant for the artistic character of Jane Eyre: The Musical is found in yet another pattern: like a number of his colleagues, composer-lyricist Paul Gordon comes to the project from a pop music industry background (best known for his hit "Friends and Lovers"). And quite a few of the show's numbers benefit from Gordon's catchy craftwork, weaving melodies that are clearly destined to be whistled long past curtain. Yet the effect is sometimes too facile, not diving as deep as we would like into the emotional predicaments of Brontë's characters. You begin to crave a more deftly defined and imagined variety of sound worlds (especially for the darker aspects of Thornfield Hall) than what is hinted at. Gordon doesn't forge any new paths, but his melodic fluency does have its moments of payoff--especially in the moving final duet "Brave Enough for Love," which is also strong enough to stand on its own.
Gordon's predilections as a would-be son of Sondheim are nevertheless clear, and he's telescoped the story into mostly effective lyrics, with some thoughtful juxtapositions of material. Most importantly, he understands that this is more than a Gothic romance, foregrounding the central message of forgiveness that Jane learns as a girl. He attempts to explore the injured sense of self shared by both Jane and Rochester and sets them on a painful, mutual voyage of discovery.
The creative team also includes the veteran duo John Caird (book and direction) and John Napier (scenic design), who have collaborated on such epics as Les Mis and Nicholas Nickleby (not to mention the Las Vegas Siegfried and Roy extravaganza). And the show's creators seem to share a vision geared toward the more operatic end of the spectrum (it was opera composers, after all, who early on claimed 19th-century Gothic fiction for the stage, as in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor), with an actual parody of coloratura in one showstopper ("The Finer Things") given to Blanche Ingram. Fortunately, the two principals have large, richly expressive voices to encompass the large, complicated emotions of these characters. Marla Schaffel singswith unusual beauty and brings dimension to her Jane, while James Barbour (whose resumé includes Beauty and the Beast) is never really threatening as Rochester, but rather a tortured soul who is sweet-voiced even at his most cynical. Mary Stout is a stitch as the blustery Mrs. Fairfax. While the show has already undergone a lengthy evolution from its very first workshops, the viability of its final, fully staged realization has yet to be determined. But this cast recording conveys an authentic sense of the musical's atmosphere and emotional scope. --Thomas May
Customer Reviews:
Great Buy!.......2007-06-08
Not only was this CD super cheap, it also arrived at my house 3 days later!
Perfect Match.......2007-03-16
The music in this album really gave me the feeling of reading the book. I think the songs were well chosen and well written, except of course for the songs sung by Mrs. Fairfax... I could have done without those. Jane and Mr. Rochester's songs carry the story well and they sound lovely. For any musical lover, or romance fan I definitely recommend this album.
Probably the most beautiful musical of all time.......2007-02-16
This is a hidden gem and if you buy it and listen to it, I don't see how you can not love it. I have bought many, many Broadway cast albums but I still am a popster at heart. With all that said, this is a cast album that soars above the crowd.
I bought this several years ago and have listened to it repeatedly since I got it. Why do I love it so much? First of all, the lyrics are full of heart and emotion and tell the story ably. But it is the music and the performances that are truly remarkable here. The melodies are memorable and absolutely exquisite. The orchestration is lush but not sappy. The performances by the two leads are nothing less than stunning.
I never get bored with this wonderful cast album and it is very, very highly recommended.
Beautiful!.......2007-01-28
I listen to this soundtrack all the time and I never get tired of the songs. If Charlotte Bronte story was written as a musical, then this would definitely be it.
A good musical.......2006-07-20
if you like old-fashioned romantic stuff, this one's for you. Some songs are very inspired, the music is,for the most part, quite beautiful, and the story line keeps the essence of the Bronte novel. I heard this right after "Wuthering Heights: the musical", which is quite good, yet this is superior. Give it a try and you might be nicely surprised. I would highly recommend it to the ones who know the novel and to English Literature students: it offers a different and interesting approach to the novel.

With so many hipster artists cranking out kids' music, finding a disc of unflashy tunes for a little one to nap by can be like shopping for Keds at a custom sneaker boutique. That's not to suggest that this sweetly sung collection of French and English lullabies is plain vanilla, only that it's a likably retro exercise in dispensing the kind of music that has effectively carted kids off to the sandman for centuries. Connie Kaldor and Carmen Campagne, the performers of these 13 mostly original but classic-sounding tracks, carry their tunes in maternal voices that could smooth the most rumpled of nerves, be they in a colicky infant or a cranky grandparent. And the landscapes they describe in service of their task seem plucked from a holistic practitioner's remedy book: "Close your eyes and dream/There are clouds to cuddle/Moonbeams to climb/Stardust to catch you," goes the gentle first verse to "Dream Baby L'enfant des Reves." Kaldor and Campagne's Canadian background accounts for the bilingual twist, but it's not distracting; the French, in fact, compounds the prairie night's poufy pastel sweetness. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description
One of America's most prolific and successful composers, Mrs H. H. A. ("Amy") Beach was one of the first women composers whose works were as highly regarded as those produced by men. Best known during her lifetime for her well-crafted songs and short piano pieces, she was also the first American woman to compose in the larger forms. Beach's 117 art songs span the whole of her compositional career. By incorporating musical ideas from many cultures and musical traditions within a late-Romantic framework, Beach's songs show her skillful craftsmanship and profound understanding of text.

Customer Reviews:
A good overview of Zorn's soundtrack compositions........2005-10-24
Over the past twenty years or so, John Zorn has built up an enormous library of composition for film, released on sixteen CDs (cleverly titled "Filmworks I", "Filmworks II", and so on...) on his Tzadik record label. For a neophyte, this can be a bit much to tackle, as such, this album, "Filmworks Anthology: 20 Years of Soundtrack Music" has been released to provide an overview of Zorn's soundtrack composition.
As an overview of Zorn's work, this succeeds well. It also appears that another goal was to represent every volume, as at least one piece is drawn from each (volumes VI and VIII get two cuts, I and XII get three, and III and VII get four). Just about everything in Zorn's diverse catalog of film soundtracks is covered-- movies, documentaries, pornography, cartoons and commercials (certainly none I've seen!) are all represented with a suitably diverse array of pieces, from gamelan to string trios to surf rock, Zorn pretty much covers a wide array of sounds and moods-- if nothing else, the diversity of these 28 tracks is a testament to his vast skills to compose in virtually any environment. I could make a few arguments about what cuts I would have picked, but by-and-large, the compilation is a rather good and thorough overview, and the cast of performers is immense, with virtually all key players in the downtown scene involved to some extent or another.
Another notable point about this release is the artwork-- packed in a digipack with a pair of photos of Zorn (one from '86, one from '05) and stills from the various pieces littered throughout the liner notes, it certainly looks great. And speaking of the liner notes, Zorn offers a superb essay on film soundtrack composition and appreciations by musicians Marc Ribot, Anthony Coleman, Jamie Saft and Cyro Baptista (all of whom appear to some extent or another on the music) are included.
I've got currently about half of the filmworks series and I found value in this overview. Several of the individual pieces hold together far better than this recording does, but it certainly does a great job providing an impression of Zorn's diverse film scoring career.
Curious about Zorn?.......2005-10-23
Considering myself a casual fan of John Zorn I have been at times either annoyingly put off or enthusiastically engaged with the diversity of his music. Admittedly, It can be daunting for a Zorn novice to find a suitable entry point in which to begin navigating through the extremities of his musical output. This new collection, which pulls material from the sixteen releases (thus far) of his FILMWORKS series, is everything the curious could want in a well-rounded introduction.
The selections chosen for this disc make for an exhilarating listening experience from start to finish as the focus jumps from one musical genre to the next, from cartoon scores to punk rock to jazz and surf music. Most selections early on clock in at under 4 minutes, with many others zipping by under just one. All these various styles meld together so effortlessly that it's impressive it all comes from a single creative mind.
The packaging is also deserving of mention, as the CD is housed in a fold-out digipack case with two booklets attached inside. In one of these booklets Zorn describes his methods and self-imposed rules in creating music for film (as well as for dealing with snoopy film directors). The other booklet features short essays by a few of Zorn's collaborators on what the creative sessions were like. There are also many photos from the films the music accompanies. (So far the only films I've seen with Zorn's scores are "Trembling Before G-D" and "Protocols of Zion".)
Favorite tracks: "Surfing Samba", "Arsenal Dance Mix", "Shanghai", "Main Title (Invitation to a Suicide)"
Final Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

So creative and unique -- parents and children will love it!.......2007-01-13
I initially borrowed this book and CD set from the library on a whim because the cover looked interesting. Two renews later, I am purchasing one for the house. I have a 2 and 3 year old who listen to this CD non-stop. My 3 year old knows all the words, and I must confess I DO TO. The songs are so creative and catchy -- you will find yourself humming along with the alligators. This is certainly a smart collection of songs that will introduce your little one to various styles of music. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!
Smart and fun, a real winner!.......2006-04-06
A friend gave my daughter this CD for her first birthday, and we've been listening to it almost nonstop ever since. The lyrics are clever and fun, and the music is beautifully scored and performed. I sing along with all the songs myself, and my daughter sways and dances. Highly recommended!!!
Top of our Grand-daughter's list!.......2005-01-16
We heard your "Duck in New York City" in a CBC radio program in Dec. about kids' music and the value of it to their musical growth. We loved that song and we went to Chapters the same day and purchased 2 copies of the CD. The songs are excellent and it is a great "learn and sing-along" disk. Our only problem(??)is that the 5 year old insists that there are butter-bugs in the slug song and her older sister disagrees! Great fun!! They both listen so carefully, and love to sing and dance to all the songs. We will be on the lookout for your other releases. Thank You...keep them coming!!

TOO MUCH BARBARA COOK!!!!.......2005-12-24
I liked the OBC of this show and found it much more enjoyable! Barbara is too old to play Martha and she has about 4 solos and 2 duets, WHY? Mary the main character in the show dosn't have a solo! WHY? If you want somthing enjoyable get the OBC or the London.
Dead weed..........2003-12-02
The flat, unoriginal music in this boring musical does nothing compared to its flowering rival, Simon's "The Secret Garden" (Broadway). Buy the Original Broadway Cast Recording of Lucy Simon's musical, the original is a dead weed.
Excellent alternative to the Broadway/London Casts.......2003-10-05
I bought this because I love the story and had also thoroughly enjoyed the OBC of the Lucy Simon version.
I'm happy to say I was pleasantly surprised by this version. Many of the songs (notably Before You Know It's Summer, One Patch of Blue, Wings) are better than the version produced on Broadway and in London. However, my only criticism is that Barbara Cook is far too old to play Martha, and even though she sings her songs beautifully I couldn't help wishing it was someone younger! Since obtaining the London Cast of the Lucy Simon version (much better than the OBC!!) I would say I love both versions equally!
Buy it before it's deleted!!!
Beautiful Musical.......2003-10-01
As an alternative to the popular success of Simon-Norman's adaptation of "The Secret Garden" that played Broadway in the early 1990s, this studio album is perfect. It features some of the greatest of the Broadway stage. Tony winners John Cullum, Judy Kaye, George Rose and the immortal Barbara Cook lead the cast of this Sharon Burgett musical.
It's a vastly different approach to the material, more from a traditional musical standpoint (Rodgers and Hammerstein-esque). It's material is beautiful with a knock-out overture. It may remind some of Alan Menken's compositions for "Beauty and the Beast", however this was made 5 years before that hit film.
The standout is "My Mother", the duet between Martha and Mary. There are many excellent musical sequences and it would be nice to see this musical have some more exposure in the form of an actual stage production.
The Secert Garden.......2000-06-24
I really liked this CD. The songs were beautiful, but it took a while for me to get to like them. the song"MY Mother" is very touching and sad, while "Just like me" is really cute. I would really recommend this CD, especilly if you need music for a talent show act, some of the songs would make great dancing music!
