Live-in-studio performances are a radio staple in big cities coast-to-coast, but no one does it with the clout of Los Angeles station KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic program and its influential host Nic Harcourt. The most recent compilation of diverse recordings--without dubs or production tricks--will appeal to fans of any of the 13 artists and to those looking to inflate their music perspectives. The curtain opens with the Polyphonic Spree's crescendo-building pop symphony spiritual "It's the Sun," which quiets, then meshes into the Flaming Lips' bare-bones reading of "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1." Damien Rice, Paul Weller and Radiohead all pull the plug on restrained, yet uniquely commanding performances before "eclectic" earns its title on My Morning Jacket's blistering full-band rocker "One Big Holiday." After Interpol and Franz Ferdinand make stalwart contributions, Sarah McLachlan, accompanied only by a piano, recites in hushed tones why she is the "Answer," before a solo Steve Earle takes the listener on a journey to "Jerusalem." The poignant presentation by the rabble-rousing troubadour serves as an optimistic closer to another successful anthology. --Scott Holter

4 out of 5 stars sounds almoust eclectic.......2005-09-06

Yes...almoust eclectic. You've may heard the radio show hosted by Nick Harcourt, it es an eclectic one, you can catch from the most experimental to the mainstream, or the quiet to the louder, but this record isnt at all.

There's this sort of line to follow, despite the bands are real eclectic, within each other, the live presentations have similitudes, so maybe theres a louder or heavy act left.

The good thing here is the selection of groups and the production by the host of the show. Nice quality sound, good masterization, and a better selection of songs, untitled from Interpol, one big holiday from my morning jacket and the BD from Demian Rice are the best
As a conclusion the price is real worth the record and the effort of the public radio internatinal broadcast, and it is better if is purchased by amazon, speccially if you are over seas

5 out of 5 stars An Eclectic Mix of Live Performances.......2005-05-05

This collection of live recordings is taken from LA-based radio station K-CRW's "Sounds Eclectic" series of broadcasts. Each performance was recorded live in their studios with the choicest tracks being released on this great CD. The tracks cover a wide variety of music genres: from Kinky's Spanish-language track "Mirando De Lado" and the bombastic and joyful "It's the Sun" from The Polyphonic Spree to more mellow tracks such as "Answer" from Sarah McLachlan and the quielty beautiful "The Blower's Daughter" from Damien Rice. There's a little bit of everything, and that's what makes this a great recording - it introduces you to artists to which you may not normally lend an ear. Favorite tracks: "Amongst Butterflies" by Paul Weller and "Flying High" by Jem.

4 out of 5 stars NOT for people who like their music mass-marketed.......2005-04-13

Sounds Eclectic 3 is the third in a series of live recordings made at KCRW (NPR 89.9 FM, Santa Monica CA).

This album features a variety of different musicians (hence the name eclectic), from The Flaming Lips to Franz Ferdinand.

Morning Becomes Eclectic, the radio show from which the live recordings were taken, has a fresh feel that contrasts with the canned, advertisement driven attitude of most other "popular" radio stations. This CD captures that feeling well, and makes transitions from one music genre to another without alienating the listener.

Why four stars, you ask? Eclectic-based music usually has at least one song that you won't like....

Interested in buying this but not sure if it's your style? Listen to Morning Becomes Eclectic (and other programs) at http://www.kcrw.com first.

5 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Talent, Realized But Unrecognized.......2006-04-14

Kill me now. I'm not sure I want to live in a musical world in which music this good is lost. So if it's that good, why haven't you heard of Gabrielle Gewirtz? I'm glad you asked.

We live in a world of musical sysiphus, ny friend, and artists whose music does not have acceptable backing or grass roots momentum are pretty much lost to the public. But of course, you know this. Better more Springsteen or Stones than the unknown. And so talent lies unnoticed but by a lucky few. In this case, I consider myself lucky.

Gabrielle combines the best of what she has in "Wide", not the least of which is considerable talent. She is just branching out from her folk and gospel roots to light jazz and the combination is captivating. To pull it off, she invited some of her favorite musicians to participate, including percussionist/electronics whiz Clancy who produced and bassist-extraordinaire Nicholas d'Amato. The result is a beautifully recorded but extremely personal Gabrielle album... the best of both worlds, shall we say.

She plays acoustic guitar, as do most 'folkies', and she sings very well, but the key here is songwriting. She has a way of fitting her voice to various moods of the pieces which can at times be quite disarming. Take, for instance, "She Smiles", an uplifting rocker with very slight jazz tinge in which voices fill the chorus so that her vocals become controlled, but free. Or "No Sign No Sound", which is at one and the same time introspective ballad and choogling rocker. Or "Melina" and "Whose Life" where her voice floats over simple but extremely apt and well done arrangements, and which are superb three in the morning when you're crashing songs. There is a bit of Kate Bush there, and maybe Joni Mitchell, and possibly Sandy Denny and a thousand other fine singer/songwriters, but the music is all Gabrielle Gewirtz (except for the excellent pop jazz of "I Know You Know" and the plagiarized but extremely well done arrangement of Cindy Lauper's "Time After Time") and it won't take more than a few listens to strike home. Gabrielle has the talent. All she needs is the audience.

Taking a chance is tough, I know, as expensive as music is these days, but Gabrielle is worth taking a chance on. "Wide" could easily be the next decade's lost great album, though it is worth much more. It is worth being a hit, if I might be so bold. In my head, it already is.

5 out of 5 stars I cannot say enough about this CD!.......2007-05-01

I love it for its intricate harmonies (I love to sing along in harmony) and its brilliant, original, and hysterical lyrics. Pity Party is my absolute favorite. These ladies have a scathing sense of humor. My two year old, autistic daughter is completely enchanted by this CD, as well. I expect we'll be playing a whole lot of it in the Mommy-mobile for many years to come.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Lyrics~!.......2007-02-04

I love the lyrics! There's such humor in some of the tracks - really wonderful rhythmic well made music - unlike anything really - so refreshingly NOT new agey. More, please!

5 out of 5 stars Rite the first time is very RITE!!.......2006-08-18

I bought this CD based on the name of the group, and the name of the CD, just having heard the little bitty preview on Amazon and I'm glad I did. It is intelligent humor; entertaining musically as all three women are talented both in voice and instrument. Sometimes, in the Craft, we take ourselves a little bit too seriously. This is an excellent reminder that there's another side to it all.

    5 out of 5 stars Just wonderful.......2005-12-09

I love this cd. The eclectic mix of music that sing about the mundane and make it so fun. I enjoy just singing along with these women. They have done a great job and made a wonderful cd. This album is quirky and light-hearted and well worth the money spent on it. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Sisters in Witchcraft.......2005-09-23

Anything by the 'sisters is great. C'mon, how many voices wax poetic about Iowa? This CD is solid and well thought out, with vocals that penetrate the mind; and enrich the believers nights. And it's too bad so few people will ever hear of them. This celebration is NOT just for us; it's for everyone. Blessed be.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Freaking great.......2006-02-19

This is an amazing collection of live studio music. The variety of songs and artists is wonderful, it will be hard to wear this out with such different styles of music on this cd. This station and KGSR out of Austin, Tx, do some of the best (if not the best) live compilation cd's that I know of. The bare bones version of Coldplay's Yellow is just amazingly soulful....the Dido contribution is a real surprise too, these are just two of the highlights, but the whole thing is so very good...buy, listen, and enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars Pass on this one.......2002-12-10

Radio station in-house recordings can be hit or miss. The Mountain and others have some really great productions. I wish I had passed on this one. The selections are poor with no production quality.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous live (unplugged) performances from the best artists.......2002-10-14

This album (the second in the "Sounds Eclectic" series) compiles some of the best works from one of the most eclectic radio shows there is: Morning Becomes Eclectic, which airs from Santa Monica's station KCRW (also catch the streamed version of their programs at KCRW.org). It's hard to pick one of the tracks above others: all in all, the album provides an excellent sample of some of today's best acts. However, I do have some personal favorites:
    -The version of "Yellow" performed on piano, by Coldplay's Chris Martin;
-REM's beautiful rendition of their hit from their latest album, "I've Been High;"
-A plunge into the work of one of Mexico's (and Latin America's) best rock acts, Julieta Venegas, performing "Casa Abandonada;"
    -"Fever," a track that brings to mind Stillwater's "Fever Dog," an awesome road track;
-"Jesus on a Greyhound," one of my favorite discoveries from this album, performed by Shelby Lynne; and
-Norah Jones' "Feeling the Same Way," wrapping up the selection made by the show's DJ, Nic Harcourt.

Get a copy of this album and you will be able to sample the best of today's musical works.

KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic program has always managed to capture some of music's most talented voices, some of them just young bands with a cult following, others who are seasoned vets returning to the beloved California radio station that gave them their first live broadcast. The latest series is yet another winsome venture, encompassing folk and pop performances so delicate and fresh, it's hard to believe no retouching was performed (KCRW's disclaimer swears it wasn't). Beck tips his hat with a baritone cover of the country classic "Lonesome Whistle," which segues nicely into David Gray's tender performance of his Triple-A hit, "Babylon." Travis's "Driftwood" single benefits greatly from its production-free moment, allowing singer Fran Healy's charming brogue to shine; likewise, Badly Drawn Boy (a.k.a. Damon Gough) steps up to the mic with "Magic in the Air," a pre-summer ballad that serves as a great pitch for the Brit performer's offbeat charm. Bebel Gilberto's lustrous "August Day Song" and Yo-Yo Ma's Bach prelude widen the album's scope, proving KCRW's "eclectic" banner is not a gimmick, but a philosophy that has made Nic Harcourt's program a necessary refuge for experimental listeners. --Kristy Martin

    3 out of 5 stars Shivaree who?.......2003-05-03

Most people had never heard of Shivaree until this CD came out and I've been listening to her for years. The Song Goodnight Moon is just so cool and different from anything else I've ever heard. Love it love it love it!

4 out of 5 stars Fresh and tasty.......2003-02-22

This is a pleasure to listen to: players with serious chops playing an appealing variety of styles. The unprocessed in-studio recordings are extremely clean. This will get serious rotation, both for parties and in my headphones at work. I'll also be checking out more titles in this series - hats off to KCRW for giving listeners something way better than the usual mugs and tote bags.

5 out of 5 stars Best compilation since the Pulp Fiction soundtrack.......2002-12-27

This is one of those rare, skillful compilations that contains not a single clunker. The production is great, and the track list includes several brilliant songs by more obscure artists such as Supreme Beings of Leisure and Bebel Gilberto. My only issue is putting Yo Yo Ma in the first track; while it is a great classical recording I think it may falsely lead newcomers to think the rest of the compilation follows in the same vein.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds Eclectic sounds great!.......2002-04-03

Ill have to say this has been one of the best buys ive made lately. You get exclusive recordings from great artists, performing great songs beautifully. Its a shame there isnt a second volume or that this isnt a double cd. Its starts out with a beautifully and impressive performance by YO-YO Ma on cello doing bach. Which could be considered one of the greatest and weirdest opening songs on a compilation cd. Then you get Beck doing a wonderful song: lonesome whistle... his voice sounds so pure and true, i didnt know he could sing that way... The supreme beings of leisure play an awsome track and Neil Finn plays Throw your arms around me... this is one of the best covers of the song that ive heard... his voice fits almost perfectly... patti smith, dandy warhols, willie nelson... man... this is one of the best compilations i own and it has given me a reason to believe that compilations can be awsome again!!

    4 out of 5 stars GOOD.......2001-09-18

Solid. Tasteful. Nice. It's everything you'd expect from a KCRW compilation - a nice break from all the low brow intelligence of Eminem or Destiny's Child and N'Sync.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Libana CD..........2002-07-09

I've been into Libana for over 10 years, and this is by far my favorite, even surpassing "A Circle is Cast." The songs are easy to chant/sing along to and are life/earth affirming, rhythmic and soothing. I particularly am fond of Treeplanter's Round, Con el Viento, Lullaby, Ode to Contentment, Now I Walk in Beauty, and most especially, Be Like a Bird. Even my husband has begun to appreciate Libana through this CD, which is a real breakthrough.

3 out of 5 stars A Little Better Than A Circle Is Cast.......2002-06-05

Just like their other album, it includes songs about the Judeo-Christian Deity. If I wanted that I'd buy one of the countless albums about Jesus! And like A Circle Is Cast the songs are too short and somewhat hard to understand.

To be honest, Libana kind of reminds me of Enya who I'm also not crazy about.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting, singable music.......2002-03-12

I bought the cassette maybe ten years ago and fell in love. There is a guided meditation, some great circle chants and even a girl scout campfire song! Feminine without being offensively feminist, and somehow delivering the feeling of being very personal. I wish I understood the Spanish: Con El Viento is lovely. Music translates well into other philosophies (some come from other philosophies). Buy it, you'll like it!

I Came to this site just to find this. The Chants in this CD are addictive. I was given this as a gift years ago. My daughter needs music to get up in the morning and has mood disorders: I am getting this CD after knowing its postive effects on my son ten years ago. We also played it alot in the car, it seems to keep the chilren calm and they learn its lyrics which are life/soul focused. This is alot healthier stuff than turning on your local radio station for a child.

5 out of 5 stars An experimental, keyboard-led prog trio.......2006-07-30

Released in 1970, this debut album by British band Egg is extremely complex progressive rock that is dominated by some incredible Hammond organ work. I guess that it is worth noting that although this keyboard-led trio is considered part of the "Canterbury' scene, the music sounds nothing like Caravan or Hatfield and the North (although the Canterbury sense of humor is present). Rather, the music of Egg combines a significant proportion of avant-garde tendencies with classical and some dissonant passages. In general though, over-the-top technical excess is the order of the day and I absolutely love it.

The musicians on this album include keyboardist extraordinaire Dave Stewart (Hammond organ, acoustic piano, mellotron, and tone generator - it's a crude synthesizer); Mont Campbell (vocals, bass guitar); and Clive Brooks (drums). All of these guys are simply phenomenal musicians and the individual and ensemble playing is simply out of this world. With respect to the bass player, Mont Campbell does not simply follow the left hand piano part but is thoroughly contrapuntal, which makes an Egg composition very interesting. Although Mont's vocal abilities are not great and sound a tiny bit dated at times, the vocals are not a big part of the Egg sound and do not detract from anything at all.

The tracks on the album range in length from the 0'09" experimental track Bulb to the excellent 25+ minute multi-movement Symphony No. 2. In general, the music on the album mixes experimental passages with some very nice adaptations of classical pieces (J.S. Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D-minor along with Grieg's Hall of the Mountain King), incredible jamming, and quirky proggy tracks with vocals (While Growing my Hair, I will be Absorbed, and The Song of McGillicudie the Pusillanimous). In large part though, the tracks are mostly instrumental and are dominated by Dave's incredible Hammond organ playing. Although this album is simply amazing and very enjoyable, there are moments when the avant-garde tendencies can get mildly irritating, but do little to affect the overall listening experience. This becomes apparent on "They laughed when I sat down at the Piano", which features a very nice classical piano piece that is countered with some abrasive noises on the tone generator - it's actually kind of funny really. There is also the tone generator "freak-out" on Symphony No. 2 during the Blane movement that gets a little nerve-wracking. Odd time signatures abound and meters such as 5/8, 7/4, 9/4, 9/8, and 13/8 are used along with frequent meter shifts. Chord structures are also pretty exotic and there are some very unusual root movements.

This remastered version by Eclectic discs is very good and features a ton of liner notes along with restored cover art and pictures of the band. Sound quality is also excellent. One of the features of this version of the album that is pretty cool is the addition of a previously unreleased fourth movement of Symphony No. 2. The additional tracks include Seven is a Jolly Good Time, which celebrates the jolly delights (or horrors, depending on your perspective) of playing in 7/4, along with "You are all Princes" (which ends abruptly). Both tracks were released as singles in 1969 and are pretty good. There are tiny bits of psychedelic influences on the two tracks.

All in all, this is excellent stuff that is highly recommended along with the superb follow up album Polite Force (1971).

4 out of 5 stars That Other keyboard-led British prog trio.......2005-10-01

Aside from my obsession with Soft Machine, I'm usually more of a symph-prog fan than a Canterbury fan. Egg came out of the Canterbury scene and had the typical jazz overtones and humorous, self-referential lyrics. But this band had plenty of symph-prog about them as well. Egg had the same line-up as ELP, led by Hammond master Dave Stewart who was at least the equal of, if not better than Keith Emerson. And while Mont Campbell had a deeper voice than Greg Lake's, he too had that choirboy quality that made a line like "why don't you all go to hell" sound like he was inviting you to tea.

This band had the prog-rock pretention down in spades too, having the cheek to title a sidelong epic "Symphony #2" on this their FIRST album!

This CD features some absolutely phenomenal playing, and hardcore prog fans should give it a try. Keyboards fanatics should absolutely pick it up. Vocals are sparse and the long, inventive instrumental sections really suck you in and get you caught up in the classic prog jamming. For such "deep" prog, Egg manages to come up with tons of catchy riffs that are as addictive as pop music. Stewart was really a master of coming up with riffs that were both artistically pleasing and catchy and entertaining. The truly amazing thing about this 1970 debut is that the band members were all only about 20 years old at the time and had this amount of talent!

This CD features a segment of the "Symphony" that did not appear on the old vinyl album due to copyright issues with the estate of Stravinsky, who's music is quoted in the third movement. This CD also includes both the A and B sides of the band's one and only single, and for once I'm happy to report bonus tracks that are actually bonuses! "7 Is A Jolly Good Time" in particular is a classic, with cleverly constructed lyrics about the joys of playing music in offbeat time signatures that makes it a song that any prog fan with a sense of humor should hear at least once.

Recommended for hard core prog fans, keyboard maniacs, Soft Machine and Canterbury fans.

        4 out of 5 stars egg - 4 stars.......2005-09-07

"The music on this LP(cd) is not dancing music, but basically music for listening to. It is harmonically and rhythmically complex, designed to be as original as possible within the confines of the instrumental line-up; so it's pretty demanding on the listener's attention" begins the liner notes to this superb example of canterbury progressive album. Egg were a keyboard, bass, and drum outfit who were all excellant musicians especially keyboardist Dave Stewart who understood the concept of melody and improvisation inside the wonderful tone of his various keyboards. This is their intelligent and critically regarded debut which some have described as a cross between canterbury and rio which may be interpreted to mean melodically sophisticated to abstract progressive rock performed with great wit and artistic dedication. This is a great cd. also check out their even better follow up 'The Polite Force'
