Editorial Reviews
Product Description
New York house music (undoubtedly a more rapacious and aggressive animal than its Chicago godfather) has longtime producers, Mateo & Matos to thank for keeping it alive. Raised on the city's late 70's disco shows, Eddie "E-Z" Matos and John "Roc" Mateo hooked up in the mid 80's via John's own pirate radio mixes that he broadcasted from his own home. After being mentored by a pre-Masters-At-Work, Louie Vega and spending much of the late 80's actively playing NYC's house circuit, Mateo & Matos embarked on a recording career that saw them drop deep singles for classic labels such as Nervous, Spiritual Life, and Henry Street as well as several original and mix albums for Scotland's Glasgow Underground.
Essential Elements, their U.S. album debut, enforces they're role once again in keeping deep-house a credible art-form. Here they infuse African, Latin, and the good ol' four-on-the-floor beats in a complex combination of true New York flavor. The album tracks have been mixed together to give it a beefy blend that would be perfect for the floor of many poorly lit dance dwellings.

Funkdified Sounds.......2005-05-11
Icey really went kinda crazy when he made this cd.Im sure he was tweaking or something, because of these crazy ass sounds and funkdified beats he came up with!I dont think it could possibly get more funkier than this =-)Not everyone will enjoy this,in fact only if you are a true dance music lover, you should get this
My Favorite recent Icey mix.......2005-03-21
Wow, i don't understand the other reviews on here bout this mix so i had to come to its defense. This very well might be the best Icey mix on disc i'm telling you. First of all it contains the excellent Plump DJs' mix of Orbital's Funny Break, a track that gives you goose bumps and commands you to feel euphoria. Secondly, that track being #4, tracks 1-6 are flawless breaks funk, pretty much starting with Icey's own Frequent Yet Vague - track 2. Track 11 - City Wide Allstar's The Gallon is stonkin'. There is some filler, but none more than usual and there plenty more gems including Meat Katie's two contributions - Rotten Dot Com & Bring Yourself Off. This is a great breaks mix for real.
Rocks.......2003-03-19
This album represents a lot of differing genres. I liked it.

DJ Icey returns to the scene mixing his second compilation in the Essential Series. Other DJ's releasing Essential Mixes have ranged from UK's Radio 1 Pete Tong to former Culture Club front man Boy George. MTV's DJ Skribble has even gotten in on the act. Icey, arguably the U.S.'s best known breakbeat DJ, lays down 20 tracks in just over 75 minutes. This provides the listener with a wide range of music, which on the surface would appear to be a delight, but unfortunately, ends up to be the demise of the album. The mix overall had some great cuts that got my head shaking (Orbital's Funny Break, and Meat Katie's Rotten Dot Com were my favorites), but the mix seemed too hurried. Icey's first mix in the Essential series released last year was in my opinion, his finest work, but could have also led to my high expectations for this mix. Having seen Icey live many times, this album does the man and his legend no justice. Don't worry Icey, we all have our days.

alright this is my first review, but by no means my first house/breakbeat cd. all i can say is when i paw throught the reviews posted on amazon, i am always a bit sceptical. sometimes people will say: it's "hard," and it, "kicks ass," when really it's weak and it [not good]; however, with this cd, it is very different...it'll kick your [rear body part] six ways from sunday, with skillful mixing, most excellent breaks and hard, hard beats...it's downright beautiful, man. buy it. you will not regret it!

OF A TRIBAL NATURE!!!.......2005-11-05
"Essential Elements" is a healthy blend of Afro-rhythms with thumpin' basslines and dancefloor friendly beats sure to impress everyone at your next "house" party. If folks don't dig the insatiable, seamless grooves delivered by producers Mateo and Matos, and are just standin' on the wall, I'd kick 'em out the party.
A Spiritual Tribal Journey.......2004-08-28
I have been on Amazon for quite a while and this is the first CD that has motivated me to write a review. Take 5 parts house, 3 parts tribal and then mix in 2 parts of that uncanny understanding of the spiritual elements - then you get these guys have done here. The track roll seamlessly into each other creating that mood that could equally make want to dance close to the ground or turn out the lights, light some cadles and get busy with that someone next to you. Approach with extreme caution!
