5 out of 5 stars Yet another "Book of Angels" gem..........2007-07-07

I've collected volumes 1 through 6 with great enthusiasm and all have brought equal reward. John Zorn continues to amaze me with his prolific output, and overabundant talent and love for all things audible. With Book 7, Marc Ribot shines on all tracks, showing why he is the guitarist of choice for Mr. Zorn. Trevor Dunn also provides very solid basswork, and his interaction with Ribot is very tight, most likely coming from their past work in Electric Masada together. I am new to G. Calvin Weston's work, but from this effort alone, I will definitely be looking out for more. Tracks #2 and 4 are instant favorites, but none of the tracks are any less than stellar. Anyone obsessed with the involved parties probably have already picked this up, but anyone looking for a solid guitar/bass/drum trio effort, here it is.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic........2005-07-30

In September of 2003, John Zorn celebrated his fiftieth birthday through a series of performances at Tonic in Manhattan. During this series, two days worth of performances (four sets) were done by the Bar Kokhba Sextet-- the Masada String Trio (Mark Feldman- violin, Erik Friedlander- cello, Greg Cohen- bass) augmented by guitarist Marc Ribot, drummer Joey Baron and percussionist Cyro Baptista. This set devotes one of each of its three CDs to a set (for anyone curious, the second set is the one thats omitted).

The first set, running about an hour, finds the group in an excited mood, in particular drummer Joey Baron. I've often found that Baron's strength is in his subtlety, but this performance would never let you know that-- he's ferocious and relentless, his playing far more explosive than usual-- solos on "Karet" and "Teli" are significantly up front and his playing on "Khebar" (as well as that of Baptista) is nothing short of astounding.

But Baron is still a master of taste-- his playing on "Lilin" demonstrates this, as he interweaves with Baptista underneath a fantastic, building arrangement before the piece eventually moves into the head and solos (of which Friedlander's is nothing short of astonishing). As the set progresses, it becomes clear that the arrangements by John Zorn are brilliant-- check "Ner Tamid" with Ribot's theme statement countered by Friedlander and Feldman or the alternating theme statement by the violinist and cellist on "Yatzar".

The third set, running about 65 minutes, is quite a bit more varied than the first, with subtlety being far more key to the performance. Like the best performances by the Masada quartet, this set is filled with stunning accompaniment behind brilliant soloing-- take Ribot's accompaniment of Joey Baron's boiling solo on "Jachin"-- his guitar swells and pulses and seems to egg on the drummer who builds to higher and higher heights. The drummer returns the favor on Ribot's absolutely brilliant solo on "Hazor"-- a nice midtempo piece with a great theme statement on guitar with response on pizzicato cello, the guitarist and cellist both solo brilliantly, with Baron and Baptista encouraging them so brilliantly that both end up putting together power and driven solos. And just in case this sympathetic playing wasn't enough to make your jaw drop, the entire ensemble gets behind Feldman's violin solo, in particular Cohen is brilliant and Feldman's solo sits on the edge of coming unhinged but stays totally under control and ends up trumping both Ribot and Friedlander (oh and by the way, the best solo on the piece is Cohen's bass solo). But "Hazor" is just one example, the set moves through a number of moods, from cartoony ("Lachish") to patient ("Kisofim") to downright melancholy ("Avelut"). Really the whole performance is nothing short of astounding and I could discuss any of the pieces in this light.

The last set is a bit different-- clocking in at 77 minutes with an extra piece (nine instead of eight), the band sounds to be quite a bit looser-- the themes are still exectued with the precision and detail as always, and certainly the playing is at a much higher level, but the solos feel to be reaching out further-- look no further than bluesy "Hadasha" to hear this-- Ribot's playing is totally absorbed and wrapped up in the theme and Baron and Baptista sound like they're having a blast. This pervades the entire show, with personal favorites including the explosive "Karet" and a positively joyous closer in "Bith Aneth".

Like the rest of the 50th Birthday Celebration series, this disc is wrapped in a digipack with pretty minimalist artwork, track listings and band lineups on the back of the package. A lot of folks don't like this artwork, though I find it somewhat charming, but then again, I do love a matching set [like the birthday CDs].

Certainly for the relatively low cost (for three CDs) and the extraordinary quality of these performances, this is a worthwhile investment for any fan of the Masada songbook. My only complaint is that Zorn didn't make this four CDs and put the second set on here as well. Highly recommended.

Album Description

Sousa 4 is the fourth in a series of Altissimo! releases from The US Marine Band featuring the music of John Philip Sousa. The selections on this album, with the exception of "National Fencibles", were recorded live in 1999 and 2000 while the band was on tour. The historic "National Fencibles" recording was completed in 1890 using the acoustic cylinders invented by Thomas Edison.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-03-31

I originally purchased this CD for the track "White Rose March" because I absolutely love that song, but couldn't find it anywhere else. However, when I received the CD and began listening to it, I discovered a bunch of new Sousa songs that are awesome! I recommend this for any Sousa fan, but not if you're just getting into his music, because it doesn't have this most famous tunes (or greatest hits, if you will)--it contains more of the underplayed ones (like White Rose!) But definitely a good buy!

5 out of 5 stars Best Sousa recording out there.......2005-09-10

This CD is not mid-range quality but the best buy out there. The performances are excellent and the recording quality very good; the band playing to a very appreciative audience.

I've many CDs of Sousa, including the other 3 Sousa Originals and some top-class performances by the Eastman Wind Ensemble (directed by Frederick Fennell)on Mercury and the Royal Marines Band (conducted by GAC Hoskins)on the EMI label but Sousa 4 is my favorite. If looking to start a collection again I wouldn't buy the Sousa Original box set, preferring to get Sousa 4, the Fennell and Hoskins recordings for a comprehensive range of interpretations(the other 3 Originals are very good by any standard but I think the Fennell and Hoskins better).

There's so many Sousa albums out there, many of them poor, that you can be picky, and Sousa 4 is the one to pick first.

4 out of 5 stars Mid-Line Sousa Quality.......2004-03-04

One of the slightly better Altissimo! titles on Sousa. Here we have a series of live recordings taken from Marine band tours. The sound quality is a bit off at times, but overall they sound good. For a change Altissimo! has provided a few liner notes, something they were too cheap to do before. The length of the CD is close to an hour, a bit better than the 45 min. quickies these guys usually put out. Still over-priced for what you git, but probably the best in the Sousa series from Altissimo! I think I would still go with the Naxos series on Sousa.

2 out of 5 stars not your average genius.......2007-06-15

Any old genius can write music that startles, challenges the mind or moves the heart. Perhaps only a genius like John Zorn can write something that sounds like middle eastern restaurant muzak and still have his fans barking like trained seals at his cleverness. This is unremarkable world music hash warmed over.

5 out of 5 stars Simply put- superb........2005-12-19

"Azazel" is the second in the series of releases for John Zorn's Masada Book Two. In the early '90s, Zorn wrote about two hundred pieces for his Masada project-- a songbook of melodies that could serve as springboards for improvisation all written using the "Jewish scales"-- this lent a slight klezmer bent to the music. In the second half of 2004, Zorn took it upon himself to compose a new book of Masada pieces-- all told he composed some three hundred melodies, naming each after an angel and titling the songbook "The Book of Angels". "Azazel" is performed by the Masada String Trio-- violinist Mark Feldman, cellist Eric Friedlander and bassist Greg Cohen.

One thing immediately notable about the pieces is the diversity of moods on them-- it seems as a composer Zorn seemed to also challenge himself to repeat little ground and avoid sounding, for lack of better term, Jewish. The pieces cover such diverse styles as frantic cartoon music ("Mibi", "Gurid"), lush and romantic ("Mastema", "Garzanal"), patient yet foreceful ("Tabaet"), moody ("Symnay"), dramatic ("Bethor") and just plain exciting and fantastic ("Uriel", "Aheil"). Of course, this is all helped by having just purely virtuoso performances-- these guys have been playing together (and playing Zorn's compositions) for nearly a decade and it shows-- they approach the material with an unusual sensitivity and vigor-- really digging deep inside the pieces. At times, each receives a spotlight and performs admirably, but its really the collective play that pans out, whether it be cartoon explosions and frantic improvs ("Mibi") or one outdoing the other as they trade solos ("Symnay", "Azazel", "Garzanal"), it seems that every time you think they've reached a peak, someone brings it just a bit higher.

When I first listened to this, I thought to myself that it really isn't quite as good as the live performances,b ut as I listen to this more critically for this review, truthfully I can't find anything bad to say about it-- this album is just utterly fantastic-- its not so simple as to say it's "chamber music" or "jazz on strings" or any other label, its just fantastic music performed admirably. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Book Two : Book of Angels keeps amazing us..........2005-12-04

You hear people sometimes say that JZ has stopped to surprise us with his various Masada recordings and that there are "too many" Masada records ...
I could'n disagree more. JZ wrote a new batch of around 300 Masada tunes in a few months time : "The Book of Angels". These tunes will not be played by the acoustic Jazz Quartet "Masada", but by various groups. This CD, the second volume, has the Masada String Trio playing 13 new Masada tunes. They do not cease to amaze me in their quality of composition, arrangements, playing, improvising...
The character of the Masada tunes of Book II is a bit different from the first book : they are as versatile and brilliant as those of book one, but also very refined and sometimes a bit less agressive. (more mature ?)
Some pieces have the theme in pizzicato, like "Uriel" and "Tabaet", which reminds us a bit of the famous "Abidan"-theme, but very pleasing indeed. And then there are the lyrical ones, like "Mastema" and "Garzanal", which has some Klezmer violin-playing influence.
On the CD are some jump/cut cartoon-like pieces that are played brillantly. The improvisation is brilliant and very convincing. You feel and hear that these guys have worked a lot together and are at the top of their playing.

If you have not yet tasted the Masada String Trio, this is a must-have. If you know the MST, buy it and you'll be fascinated by the new roads they take with the Book of Angels.

4 out of 5 stars The future looks bright ..........2005-11-28

Now in a holding pattern, John Zorn has long since left behind the post-modern jump cutting aesthetics of his initial game pieces and Naked City hard cross-over band to focus solely on his two greatest loves, composing and his Masada project. What once started out as an acoustic jazz quartet modeled on Ornette Coleman's infamous piano-less quartet, albeit fuelled by Yiddish scales and melodies, has now grown into Zorn's primary passion. With over three thousand individual compositions to his credit, Zorn has debuted his second book of compositions, "The Book Of Angels: Masada, Volume Two." This string trio recording is the studio debut of a number of new, never before recorded Masada compositions.

Fitting in seamlessly with the rest of Zorn's discography, these tunes conjure the same sort of timeless magic that the Masada songbook has always enjoyed. Modal in nature, with a primal and naturalistic drive, Masada tunes have proven to be Zorn's most popular project, even despite their sometimes intense and discordant delivery. Veering from haunting balladry to frenzied interplay, the trio accepts all of the composer's compositional challenges with glee. Featuring Mark Feldman on violin, Erik Friedlander on cello and Greg Cohen from the original Masada quartet on bass, the trio is never at a loss for virtuosic creativity. Strings are bowed, plucked and scraped in a passionate commingling of ancient Yiddish harmonics and post-modern compositional aesthetics.

"Azazel" is a stunningly beautiful example of the power and persistence of Zorn's vision and a welcome reminder of the composers abilities. "Azazel" is the first of many potential recordings featuring the second book of Masada tunes, as such it is a wonderful introduction to this familiar old world.

      Album Description

Kieran you probably know from his more popular moniker of Four Tet or perhaps from his time from the seminal post-rock instrumentalists Fridge. Steve Reid you've definitely heard before and you probably don't even know it. He played drums on Martha & The Vandellas' "Dancing In The Streets", and on countless other Motown sessions. On this release, the two come together to form a duet of electricity and percussion. A free jazz odyssey sure to melt minds as much as knock down barriers.

      5 out of 5 stars jazzman.......2006-11-09

Yea, baby this is the real stuff. Bless you Soul Brother
Records for re-issuing these long lost masterpieces on cd.
Dr. Eddie Henderson (he's a psychiatrist) is a BAAAAAAD
      horn player. [...]. Most of
the Mwandishi band is here (minus Julian Priester on trom-
bone) along with Pat Gleeson twirling his electronic
knobs. It all meshes so well. So timeless and so forever,
it could have been recorded yesterday. Brilliant music
for open minds and ears. Pure perfection. You go Doc.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece On CD At Last!.......2005-10-11

Realization is one of the most important works from the fusion era, grand in scope and vision, and flawlessly executed. More melodic and ethereal than Miles Davis at his best, Eddie Henderson's Realization has a spiritual center that the Prince of Darkness never achieved (though he came close in Bitches Brew and In a Silent Way). The backup band, essentially the Herbie Hancock band at the time, goes off the charts, and Henderson is ahead of them all the way. Arguably the most beautiful jazz album recorded. Also worth buying is Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi: The Complete Warner Bros. Recordings. Same band. Same sound. Same quality.

5 out of 5 stars Fusion-era electric jazz doesn't get any better than this!.......2005-03-13

Because the two albums that are reissued here -- combined in their entirety onto one CD -- have been out-of-print for so long, REALIZATION and INSIDE OUT are relative unknowns in comparison to the most acclaimed fusion-jazz era CDs by the likes Of Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, and others. Yet after several listens to this collection I'm seriously pondering if trumpeter Eddie Henderson may have done the best job of them all in highlighting the strengths and creativity of the fusion era while avoiding its weaknesses and excesses. At the very least the albums collected here should be counted alongside the best 1970s efforts by those other artists I mentioned. It's great to have this music finally available in CD format.

Much of Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band -- including HH himself on keyboards -- are in on these sessions. Yet given that Henderson wrote most of the tunes and has his own distinct ideas on how to focus the diverse textures that comprise this electric-meets-acoustic jazz approach, it would be unfair to look at these cuts as Hancock sessions issued under Henderson's name (as sometimes might be the case due for contractual or other reasons). As for the music, you get consistently brilliant playing by Henderson, equally strong statements by reedman Bennie Maupin, Hancock, and others, timeless instrumental textures (where you might find a combination of acoustic bass, fender rhodes, and synth washes blending seamlessly together), and a bold mix of funk and straight-up jazz rhythms. Despite all that is going on, there is a uncluttered sense of wide-open space on these tracks. Also, while the musicians are in a progressive frame of mind, the results should be easy-to-grasp for anyone who doesn't have an anti-electric jazz bias.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic.......2003-03-21

This is a brilliant CD. You'll think you have died and gone to heaven. If you love electric era Miles or Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band you'll love this. (Actually this is the Mwandishi band!)

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 star album from the "Eastsidaz".......2006-11-21

Their 3rd group album, if you want to call it that, comes 4 years after thier 2nd and best album. Most of these seem like they are from 2000 - 2001 time frame and just were never used. With 17 songs, you get some more of the Eastsidaz, Goldie Loc is on all 17 songs, Tray Deee is on 15 and Snoop is only on 7. Other guests drop in on about half teh songs as well. Of the 17 songs, 1 is almost a classic, 1 I skip, 7 are ok and the other 8 are good, nothing great though. Production credits aren't given but I know Battlecat does a few songs and Jelly Roll does at least 1. For their fans I'd cop this but they have much better work. As usual Tray Deee far outshines Goldie Loc with his nice raspy gangsta voice and tight flow, Goldie is average at best once again.

      4 out of 5 stars Hot!...But..........2005-11-13

This is a weird CD. Not musically weird, because it may be one of the best recordings to come out of the west coast hip-hop scene in the last year or two (along with The Game's "The Documentary & Warren G's "In The Midnight Hour"). But weird in the fact that it seemingly came out of nowhere & the CD itself gives no clue as to it's origin. There are no liner notes, production credits or any information as to when or where it was recorded. The sound quality is excellent which is what matters most, but otherwise, this is very cheaply put together, for some reason. Even the cover photo of the group is out of focus. By all accounts, this is all new, or at least relatively new Eastsidaz material. Most of the usual suspects pop up for some good collabos. Nate Dogg, MC Ren(!), Kokane, Suga Free & even Redman guest on various tracks. Even familiar themes & skits, like the "WBallz" radio spots are included. However, the CD suffers to a degree, because there is about a 8 second silence between tracks which makes the flow of the album non-existent. Also, the sequencing is a little off as well. Max "The Mack" Julien has a great skit in the middle of the disc, but it would have been even better if it had been the CD's intro. There's also two bonus tracks, that go uncredited entirely. Some featured artist on certain tracks are uncredited also. Never mind all the minuses, though. True DPGC fans will be feeling this. With the exception of "Vegetarian" which is kind of a wack track that champions eating pork(?), it's tight all the way through. If it could find major label distrubution, and fix it's minor issues, this could be considered near classic material.

You've heard Ken Nordine before, his immediate baritone resonating like the voice of God in countless radio and TV commercials, hawking everything from Taster's Choice to Murine. In the late 1950s, though, Nordine created "word jazz"--a combination of storytelling, sound painting, and pre-beat improvisation--as a less commercial, more personal outlet for his natural speaking talents. Best gathers the brightest of his four initial albums--material that found him somewhere between the prosody of Jack Kerouac and the arch satire of Nichols & May. As the title suggests, there's a light jazz backing behind Nordine's incantations--ranging from the lighthearted "Hunger Is From" to the disturbing, absurd scenario "Flibberty Jib" to the harrowing memoir "Confessions of 349-18-5171." Good, curious stuff. --Michael Ruby

      5 out of 5 stars Flibberty Jib & Jazzmatazz.......2006-07-03

Haunting me since I was a preschooler in the late `50's, from the sound of Ken Nordine's booming, string bass voice to his funny and frightening stories, right down to its paper collage cover, the original LP WORD JAZZ has lodged permanently in my psyche. I was delighted when the recording resurfaced in 1990, even if only in parts, on this compilation CD. At first I only revisited my old favorites, "Hunger Is From," a description of a sleepless, midnight raid on the refrigerator, complete with munching sound effects, "The Vidiot," a forecast, unfortunately, of the television addict I would become, "The Sound Museum," a dreamlike, wonderfully evocative "tour" of a series of aural exhibits and the artists who have created them, "Flibberty Jib," an immensely creepy portrait of religious zeal that reminds me of every facilitator of mass hysteria from Adolf Hitler to Jim Jones, and "Looks Like It's Going to Rain," in which the narrator invites the listener in to visit the noisy chambers of his brain. All of this is accompanied by the strains of cool jazz, with a tinkling piano here, noodling woodwinds there, and in several key places, some experimental electronic sounds and tape loops. Then I began to explore the other tracks on this CD, most of them new to my ears. My favorite of these previously unknown gems is "Faces In The Jazzmatazz," which I have listened to dozens of times now. Somehow it is so nostalgic that I have developed a false memory of having heard it before, somewhere in my distant past -- maybe I did, but I don't think so. Although the material on THE BEST OF WORD JAZZ, VOL. 1 is spoken, there is something so musical about Nordine's voice that, for me at least, I hear these pieces as songs, and can revisit them from time to time just as I can other favored music. The pleasure I derive from this album is so personal, and so connected to my childhood, that I don't know if I can recommend it to the uninitiated. One thing that anyone over the age of say, 30, might latch on to is Nordine's mellifluous baritone: it has been heard on more than just novelty recordings, as he has had a long career in voiceovers and narration on radio and television. So Ken Nordine will sound familiar even to those who have never heard his name.

I hope there's a Vol. 2 (may not happen, given the time that has elapsed since this CD was first released), and that it will include "Roger," a funny little nightmare scenario about a piano teacher that still gives me shivers when I hear it on my scratched up vinyl copy of WORD JAZZ.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the valley of Cool..........2005-12-05

Late at night, toss this into your cd player, press pause.

      Turn off the lights.

Turn on the TV. Turn off the sound. Flip to channel 3...

      Static...

      Hit play attention...

Ken Nordine is the comforting yet oddly disturbing voice in your head that you try to ignore, but can't; he's the Twilight Zone for your ears.

5 out of 5 stars Andre Breton Vs. Miles Davies.......2002-07-13

Well not really. But Ken Nordine has opened a portal to a whole new and different musical space. This is Jazz-Rap. There are some great reviews on this page for this extraordinary album and I'm just another voice to endorse this work. Whatever you might expect - DON'T. There is humour here, pathos, and total dis-orientation. This album is way out in left-field, like the little schitzophrenic voice that torments all our souls from time to time. Give in to it! Take time-out from whatever you are into to get a whole new perspective of what music is capable of. This is Jazz not because of the sax stabs but because there is an improvisational logic to Nordines crazy stories. It is surrealism for the same reason. There is a stream-of-consciousnees feel to these tales. The net effect is slightly unnerving but great fun nevertheless. Highly recommended!

      5 out of 5 stars I'm hooked.......2002-01-08

I found this online doing some random searches, going outside my usual music genres. I had never heard of Ken Nordine, but the voice was very familiar. I listened to a few samples and thought maybe it wasn't for me, but I might buy it just for kicks...so I did. By the fourth track I had this big grin on my face...this man has such an amazing voice that anything he says holds my attention. He talks about eating food from his fridge and I just can't bring myself to turn it off. Instead I'm laughing and listening more intently than I have ever listened to anyone before. It's funny, it's thoughtful, and its just beautiful to listen to. It is also very inspiring and really brings out creativity, at least for me. If you don't think you'll like this type of spoken word recording, you probably will so buy it anyway. You can at least play it for parties and watch everyone's attention drift towards the stereo until everyone has a smiling, glazed over look on their faces.

3 out of 5 stars freaky stuff, man.......2001-08-30

I'd never heard of Ken Nordine until just recently. Someone online suggested I give him a listen, so I bought this CD. It's a bunch of spoken word pieces recited by Ken Nordine, some with sound effects and music. Some of it's funny, and some just stupid. The language is interesting, though, since much of it is from the beat subculture of the 60s. You don't hear people talk like that anymore except in TV reruns. Or on Ken Nordine's CD.
