5 out of 5 stars Giorgio Moroder is the reason Donna Summer is so popular.......2007-03-29

I am so pleased that I was able to acquire From Here to Eternity as it was one of my most favorite tunes.

5 out of 5 stars What can I say.......2007-01-04

Moroder's a hero! A true visionary man that created (among so many others...) Donna Summer's "Bad Girls", one of my all time fave albums.

This one is as essential for a disco fan, as some Velvet Underground record is to a rock fan. Do I need to say more???

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Nice LP Clean Up.........2006-12-06

5 star album, 4 star CD. Why? Cause like the E=MC CD issue, this as well is a vinyl LP clean up...though this one is done quite nicely. My only complaint is that at times the EQ and compressing is a tad over modulated and there's a few tiny but noticeable clicks and pops from the record they didnt catch durring the suite (side a of the original LP).

Since the original CD that actualy was from the master tapes has been long out of print since the late 80s and is impossible to find..if you dont have this album in your collection in any form, def pick this CD up. It's a disco classic way ahead of its time that must be in any true disco or music lover's collection! It's def a piece of history and can withold on a dancefloor still to this day and trick the young that its brand new! (I know, ive done it to em before slipping tunes from the suite in the mix with today's crap)

5 out of 5 stars Seeds of greatness!.......2005-11-15

This album is absolutely incredible! It not only paves the way for Moroder's fame as a composer of anthems, it's also more trance-like than most of the stuff that passes for trance these days! You gotta get this!

Amazon.com's Best of 1999

The Clash were the only first-generation punk band capable of (or perhaps interested in) tailoring their up-from-the-gutter firepower to suit arena-size audiences. Here, at last--a decade and a half after their demise--is proof of their substantial stage skills. --Steven Stolder

Amazon.com

Touted for many years as the greatest live band in the world, the only surprise about this live album is that it's taken so long to appear. Recorded between '78 and '82, it captures the London punk torchbearers in all their fury--Strummer spitting out vocals like every breath is his last, the guitars of Jones and Simenon taut and abrasive. Even after all this time, songs like their debut album's scathing "Complete Control" and the dub-fired "Armagideon Time" blister out of the speakers, sending streams of scouring guitars and tight, chunky reggae rhythms into the atmosphere. Two complaints: no "White Riot," and no songs from Give 'Em Enough Rope, the underrated second album. Instead we have material from the sprawling Sandinista and disappointing Combat Rock. These are minor flaws though. Buy Live: From Here to Eternity for the first 12 tracks alone. From the angry, articulate dub of "London Calling" to the full-on force of "I Fought the Law," this is punk at its pinnacle. --Everett True

4 out of 5 stars Live.......2007-05-12

Always cool to hear songs you like live. Especially if you've never seen the band live. Lots of energy, more so than studio stuff. This has Magnificent Seven, Guns of Brixton, London Calling.

5 out of 5 stars the best.......2006-12-30

if you are a clash fan this is one of the greatest albums you could own. so do your self a favor and buy it. start to finish, outstanding!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Live Album........2006-12-26

For those of us who are too young to experience The Clash in concert, this is a must have. "From Here To Eternity" is a brilliant representation of how great they truly were, both live and in general. Every performance on this cd is bursting with an insane amount of energy, from "Complete Control" to "I Fought The Law" to "Should I Stay Or Should I Go", not to mention a scorching "The Magnificent Seven". The sound quality and liner notes are excellent, and overall this cd is most definitely a must have for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-05-21

This is an awesome album! Best songs: London Calling, I Fought The Law, Career Opportunities, Train In Vain, and Rudy Won't Fail. Still, only bad part is the lead singer's voice cracks a couple times and sometimes you can't hear the guitars very good. Still awesome.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Most Important Albums Ever Produced.......2006-04-26

This disc will always serve as proof when people like myself that grew up during the 1980s make the statement that the Clash was the greatest rock band ever. This disc has several of their many great songs recorded live and larger than life. The versions of "Capital Radio" and "Whiteman in Hammersmith Palais" are not to be believed. However, what is so incredible about this album is that all of the songs are so incredible. The sound quality is excellent and the playlist is first rate. I say the Clash is the greatest band ever, if you disagree, listen to this album and get back to me.

3 out of 5 stars Ahead of their Time.......2006-12-17

As a Dolls fan, I bought this item as soon as I saw it. The song selection
is excellent, and is an amazing career overview. The only down side(although
not for me) is the sound quality. If that would deter one from buying this,
your not as big a Dolls fan as you may have thought you were. A must have for any serious fan of The New York Dolls.

3 out of 5 stars Clearing The Vaults.......2006-06-26

According to the placemat on my table at Lim's last night, 2006 is the Year of the Dog. Well, at least they got the first two letters right because even though we're only about halfway in, it appears Year of the DOLL may be closer to the truth. Based on all of the Stooges swag dusted off and cleaned up for consumption by the great unwashed masses last year though, the Chinese nailed it when they christened 2005 the Year of the Cock.

Early track listings for this swanky mini box trumpeted the inclusion of studio demos allegedly superior to those versions ultimately released on the two much-maligned albums which make up the Dolls official discography but like Jimmy Hoffa back in 1975, they've gone missing somewhere between concept and reality. Has anyone checked the Meadowlands?

What we get instead are three discs worth of shows which, with the possible exception of Vancouver (1974), have all been available on various boots and dodgy, semi-official releases over the past 30 years, packaged a hundred different ways under wrappers like "Panic In Detroit," "Paris Le Trash," "Dolls Live: Dallas '74," "Live At My Father's Place," "Hootchie Cootchie Dolls," "Seven Day Weekend," and "Red Patent Leather." For what it's worth - perhaps an afterthought - Castle even throws in three songs from a 1984 Heartbreakers gig in Sweden with Sylvain Sylvain masquerading as Walter Lure, previously available on Receiver Records' "Sad Vacation."

Extra credit to whoever untangled the snarl of licensing rights as well as to whoever has to figure out the distribution of royalties.

True believers in the healing powers of digital technology will be dismayed to learn that it has proved worthless in cleaning up the sound of those dusty old vinyl sides they may have laying around the basement. It's all as boomy, flat, and muffled as ever, even the Detroit show, culled from a WABX-FM simulcast, but it will do in a pinch. Hand-held cassette recorders held high above a sea of tottering, jean-jacketed chunderheads fortified on Quaaludes and cheap wine were never meant to take the place of a soundboard.

But the performances shine BRIGHTLY nonetheless, like the best night of your life crammed into 60-minute blocks of the sound of five guys, with not inconsiderable chemical assistance, not so much reinventing the wheel as fitting it with shiny chrome mags and raised white lettering. Set lists will read like the back of the hand to the faithful aside from the occasional non-LP track and cover like "Lone Star Queen," "Great Big Kiss," "Don't Mess With Cupid," and "Daddy Rolling Stone." Nice to have all of this in one spot, thereby freeing up the vinyl versions for sale on ebay.

Frankly - and I never thought I'd say this - I'm tapped out of adjectives for the New York Dolls, much as I was in 2005 with The Stooges. Reviewing albums by either band without using words like "raw," "fuzz," "proto," "primal," "punk," "drugs," "crash," or "burn" - ad nauseum - is no longer within my wheelhouse.

"From Here To Eternity" clears the Dolls' plate just in time to welcome the dawning of a new epoch. Bring on the new album! I'll meet you there, alright?

2 out of 5 stars Where are the demos?.......2006-06-14

First of all, the track listing is wrong from what appears on the Amazon site as of 6-14-2006. It's not even close. Second, there are no demos on this. Am I missing something?? I preordered this to get the demos and all we have are live recordings. The sound on this is awful, very similar to the Stooges live recordings. If your familar with those, you know what I mean. I would have given it one star, but it is still a interesting listen, as I love The New York Dolls. I'm shocked they would release this the way it sounds. It appears to be a attempt to make money without putting a dime in cleaning up the sound on this. The Vancouver show is the only decent recording on this release.

2 out of 5 stars Same Old, Same Old.......2006-06-14

Nice packaging and liner notes but this is mostly the same old stuff that has been floating around on boots or semi-legitimate releases for years.

Unfortunately there was no magic remastering applied so the crummy sounding stuff still sounds crummy.

One bright spot: I had never heard the Vancouver material before and it is pretty darn good, very listenable.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars One of the Finest "Neo-Classical" Guitar Efforts.......2001-10-29

The title of this review refers primarily to Uli's "Prologue to Symphonic Legends", one of the three CDs in this collection. The set also includes Uli's first two Electric Sun Albums from '79 and '80. The Electric Sun recordings definitely have bright spots - Uli's awesome and crafty guitar solos which are brilliant compositions in themselves, his Hendrixisms, and his beautiful Strat tone. Unfortunately, they also have rough spots - the production, the vocals (Uli is a great player but an awful singer who makes music sometimes sound like karaoke - a great band backing up an ameteur vocalist, but Uli can be forgiven since his playing is so stellar, his vocals don't matter), and in my opinion, inconsistent songwriting. In spite of weaknesses, they are great to listen to for electric guitar fans and offer an education on where certain developments in rock guitar sprang from during the eighties.

The best part of this collection is the Prologue, which unlike most other "neo-classical" efforts, is mainly orchestral music with Uli interjecting beautiful, violin-like guitar solos on his six octave guitar. The opening piece is a familiar Puccini piece which Uli rewrote the lyrics for. His solo is breathtaking. His tone and use of the wah are about is perfect as it gets for this genre. The other pieces are Uli's own compositions and reveal him to be among the foremost composers whose primary instrument is electric guitar. The cadenza in "Pegasus" is the most perfect distorted electric guitar solo I have ever heard and it alone is worth the price of this entire 3 CD collection. Uli not only plays the right notes for classical pieces, but has the right feel - the right rubato. That is something lacking amongst most electric players who attempt classical pieces. The drawback to "Prologue" is that the orchestration is synthesized, but the timbre isn't too thin in spite of this. There is also a nice bonus after the "Prologue" of Uli's incredible piano compositions. And best of all...Uli doesn't sing!

Any fans of virtuoso electric guitar music who have not yet heard Uli or who only know him from his early Scorpion days, must check him out. In my opinion, he makes Yngwie sound like a kindergartner - and I speak as an Yngwie fan!

4 out of 5 stars Great Bargain!.......2000-06-18

Okay, Uli Roth started out copying Jimi Hendrix. This compilation shows what he was trying to do when he left the Scorpions (and both parties went very separate directions). Yes, Uli's voice (like Jimi's) is nothing extraordinary (the last disc has classically-trained singers, not Uli). But his guitar melodies are straight from Heaven. Uli took himself from a Hendrix follower, to an innovator himself, and his work has taken the guitar to places that I know even Jimi would be amazed, and pleased. The last disc and the new direction is very much symphonic rock opera, but the backbone of all Uli's work is beautiful solos. Not wanking like Yngwie, but rather ethereal music. Uli has a sound like no one else, and his custom 7 string guitar is more like a violin (here you see the classsical direction). This collection is a must for guitar fans. Beyond that, I am not sure I'd recommend it. But if you are prone to buying Steve Vai, Yngwie, Satriani, Eric Johnson, Santana, or any of these guys...They know and admire Uli. Buy this and see why.

3 out of 5 stars From Rock to Classical.......2000-02-29

The first two discs were exactly what I expected of Uli, very Scorpionslike. If you like songs like Fly To The Rainbow,Evening Wind and Polar Nights then, you will like these two discs. The vocals are a little week especially on the Fire Wind disc. Disc three is different. If you like classical music you should enjoy this disc, if not you won't. It's that simple. The last song "AQUILA SUITE" is a piano composition, I think it is a very good change of pace. Not that I don't enjoy blisstering guitar work because I do, it's just that in my advacing years I am becoming a more rounded music fan (I will not ever become a top 40 fan). For the money this is a very wise purchase, three for the price of one. Buy this set, reminisce about days gone past and enjoy some good classical music with your favorite beverage or herb.

      Product Description

Giorgio Moroder wasnt single-handedly responsible for the advent of disco, but he was a huge force behind it. Not only was he a studio owner and producer, he was a songwriter and performer as well. When he and then-partner Pete Bellotte collaborated with Donna Summer on the epic, 17-plus-minute Love To Love You Baby, it was clear they were onto something. His subsequent film work on Midnight Express and Cat People gave his compositional skills a wider audience, and his work with Blondie on the track Call Me gave him entry into the elite of the New Wave. From Here To Eternity, Moroders 1977 concept album, sort of flipped the bird at the band Boston, which had haughtily proclaimed their debut album contained no electronic keyboards. Moroder responded by announcing only electronic keyboards were used on this recording. In addition to being a huge influence on the dance scene, Moroders work reveals the stirrings of electroclash decades before its emergence as a recognized pop form. Much like Kraftwerk, Moroder has gone largely unheralded by the American public for his pioneering role in electronic music. But its almost impossible to listen to this album, itself over a quarter of a century old, without hearing the seeds of genius preparing to sprout. Remastered in 2004 by Gavin Lurssen of The Mastering Lab.
