Things don't get much schmaltzier than a Dobro played Hawaiian style, which is why it's fitting that Cowboy Jack Clement offers one up on "The Blue Side of Lonesome," Leon Payne's dated but charming classic--only one such excursion into blue-haired reminiscing on an album of over-the-top sentimentality. It was the legendary Clement who paired smart-ass folkie Prine and bluegrass totem Wiseman, but the singers themselves chose the repertoire, which reads like songs people of a certain age might pick on a dry drunk. The tunes range, believe it or not, from religious hymns to covers of Patti Page's 1957 hit "Old Cape Cod," Kris Kristofferson's underrated "Just the Other Side of Nowhere," and Tom T. Hall's "Old Dogs, Children, and Watermelon Wine," with a little Elvis and Ernest Tubb thrown in for good measure. It's fitting that Prine and Wiseman revisit the Hall standard, since oddly, both singers vocally favor the Nashville storyteller from time to time. But one has to question their use of the Grand Ole Opry's Carol Lee Singers, who show up on several cuts and seem, well, just bizarre on a John Prine record, even as they evoke the lushly famous Nashville Sound of the 1960s. Suffice it to say, this is a quirky project, and if Prine's scratchy baritone and Wiseman's melodic tenor sometimes overlap to where you can't tell who's singing what, it doesn't much matter. You're listening to two new pals having what seems to be the time of their life. --Alanna Nash

Prine and twang.............2007-07-03

I first caught the wind of the country & western direction in John Prine when I heard his earlier CD "In Spite of Ourselves." The Nashville influence has laid a noticable twang on his voice to the extent that the vocals are sometimes hardly recognizable as Mr. Prine. As mentioned in some of the other reviews, on my first listening, I also thought immediately of Tom T. Hall. For long time followers more accustomed to John's rebellious angles (and the wry title, at least, is pure Prine) this CD might be quite a shock. But I accept it as simply the mark of a mature artist stretching himself artistically, not "selling out" for the sake of sales to a mellower audience. My apologies for not commenting more about Mac, I am less familiar with his work but I assume that stylistically this is more in his comfort zone. His vocals bond nicely with John's and this is definitely equality in a duet. A nice relaxing work, accept it for what it is, not what you expect of John Prine.

I heard John Prine and Mac Wiseman on NPR one afternoon
and fell in love. Their song choices are wonderful.

A Disappointment ...and so sorry to say it.......2007-06-26

This was such a disappointment. I had looked forward to this for months, having admired Mac Wiseman for over fifty years, and Prine for thirty or so. But this just doesn't work.

The songs are such classics that each singer could do them well while singing by himslef. But there are just no strong emotional tugs from these "collaborations." Mac has done some great work singing with other bluegrass singers, and Prine has been terrific in his work with women singers ... but these two great men never seem to feed off one another. The feel suggests that these guys were not even singing together. I'll lay this away and go back to the many songs that I have by each that are so terrific.

John Prine Love.......2007-06-14

I don't think there is anything John Prine could do to diminish the love we feel for his music in our family. We think he might be America's poet, or one of them anyway. This CD is sweet and lovely and seems like two great guys sitting down playing and singing some nice tunes together and we all get to listen or sing along. "Standard songs for average people..." - the title says it all. Just a sweet ole time with John Prine and, in this case, with Mr. Wiseman, too. I gave this to my husband for our anniversary, along with the recently released John Prine DVD, and we are always just so grateful for great artists and John Prine is surely one.

Sorry, love nearly all of JP's output but this is the worst I've ever heard, schmaltzy, corny, cringe-inducing, hurts me to say but it's the way I would see it. Bought it blind on the strength of all John's other stuff and regretted it immediately. If everyone else thinks it's great, maybe I can get my money back on ebay...

It's hard to pinpoint the exact moment Modest Mouse started sounding like a real band. For the longest time, singer-songwriter Isaac Brock seemed to exist solely to defy the established rules, forging forward on sheer momentum and ingenuity. Even Pavement looked relatively ordinary in comparison to the band's early releases like 1996's This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About and 1997's The Lonesome Crowded West. But on Good News for People Who Love Bad News, the frontman sounds like he's finally touching the earth, and the band--minus founding member and drummer Jeremiah Green--follows suit. A relaxed mood prevails, not so much in volume but in attitude. On the follow-up to the group's 2000 major label debut, The Moon & Antarctica, big sloppy melodies battle it out with brass on punky epics like "Float On" and "The Ocean Breathes Salty." The lyrics are simpler, the arrangements tamer, but the vitality remains. The prevailing mood is that Modest Mouse has pulled off something extraordinary here: a well-rounded, lovable record that doesn't sound anything like David Gray. --Aidin Vaziri

Yes, "Float On" was a smash hit. Yes, it's pretty poppy. But what about "3rd Planet" and "Gravity Rides Everything" from "The Moon and Antarctica"? To a (possibly much) lesser extent, what about "Heart Cooks Brain" from "TLCW" or "Dramamine" from "This is a Long Drive"? You see, MM have generally had more "mainstream-palatable" songs on their album, and just because this one was a hit, does not mean they sold out.
OK, you've heard that rant before, but not in such an *ahem* eloquent fashion. Now onto the review.
As usual, the hit is by no means the best song on the album. Other songs like "The World At Large", "Ocean Breathes Salty", "Bury Me With It", "Bukowski", "The View", and (ESPECIALLY) "The Good Times are Killing Me" (which, by the way, if you did not know, was remixed and tampered with by one of the best bands of all time, the Flaming Lips) not only give "Float On" a run for its money, they take the money and use it to buy cigars.
I mean, the fact that supposedly hardcore fans are nitpicking this great album because it has freakin' "Float On" on it more points out their own stupidity and narrow-mindedness than it does the band being sell outs.
So, in conclusion, if you want to keep your rather dubious "indie cred", do not buy this album. If you enjoy Modest Mouse as much as anyone should, however, than do.

I am becoming more and more of a fan of this kind of off-beat, different music. I guess I can't help myself. I liked the single "Float On" when I heard it a few years ago, but again, I didn't pursue the album until later. Good News is interesting because of its contrasting moods. The plucky guitars and catchy harmonies conflict with the cynical lyrics that attack religion and certain kinds of people. The vocals range from pleasant sounds in the background to aggressive, near shouting tirades. The singer isn't all that great at singing, but he's great at using his voice to convey any mood he wants.

"The World At Large" starts off the album about as happy as it gets, with flutes and meaningless vocals in the background. "Bury Me With It" is about as angry as the band gets musically, though not lyrically. That would be "Bukowski", which is completely pleasant musically. "The View" sounds like kind of like dance music. "Satin In a Coffin" uses prominent drums and older sounding instruments to create a very interesting sound. "The Good Times Are Killing Me" finishes off the album while perfectly illustrating the conflict of sound and message, and it's produced by The Flaming Lips, which is cool. Modest Mouse is a unique band, and a good one at that.

I can't believe I heard this on the radio........2007-03-27

The first time "Float On" came across the radio I almost $#!? my pants. I fell in love with Modest Mouse after I heard "Dramamine". Not immediately, but after listening to the "Long Drive" record repeatedly, the band grew on me. And grew. And grew. Now 8 or 9 CD's later they're still growing on me. I'm glad they've found radio success and hope they are able to keep producing new music.

My highlights for this record include Bukowski, Black Cadillacs, and Satin In A Coffin. If you truly love the band and aren't just in it for the image, you'll love this record. The whole album is great. Yes, even Float On.

Even if you're an old school MM fan, listen to it with an open mind.......2007-03-12

This album is the worst Modest Mouse album, in my opinion, but it's still really great. That's the beauty of Modest Mouse.

What I love about Isaac Brock is that his music reveals a lot about who he is and what life has taught him. Good News for People Who Love Bad News is no exception.

The only track I don't like on this album is "Satin in a Coffin". After hearing a live recording, which I love, I can't stand to listen to the one on gnfpwlbn. It lacks passion and intensity.

These guys have released so many great albums that the expectations are always incredibly high for their next one. And every time they release one, I listen to it, and I'm a bit disappointed, and I say to myself, "it's good, but it's not as great as the last ones."

Then I listen to it more, and it begins to grow on me, and soon I can't stop listening to it and I'm raving, "This is their greatest album!".

That's what happened to me with this one. Didn't blow me away at first. Now? I am like an addict. As soon as a song ends I need to hear it again immediately. And I can't stop listening to the album, and I don't want to listen to anything else....

I give it huge props, even though they diss my beloved Charles Bukowski.

My daughter is 7 years old and has listened to this CD every night since

she was 1. Our first CD finally wore out and we had to buy our second

copy. We love Tina Malia and her beautiful songs.

The Best Lullaby CD .......2007-06-17

I first bought this CD along with several others shortly after my daughter was born and it quickly became the favorite. My daughter is turning 5 in a couple of weeks and this is still the CD she and I want to listen to at bedtime. We still love all the songs after listing to nearly every night for 5 years!. The music is all acoustic with lovely soothing melodies, quite rhythms, and beautifully sung lyrics. I strongly recommend buying this CD if you are looking for high quality relaxing and gentle music to help your child drift off to sleep. I've lost count of how many times I bought this CD and am always glad to purchase more.

I bought this CD for a friend who had just had a baby. I thought it would be to help the baby sleep...and maybe it does, but it helps my friend sleep better. She wouldn't be without it.

The lullabyes on this CD are performed in an extraordinary fashion, ranging from soothing melodies to stimulating interpretations with traces of jazz. I really like it! The singer has such a beautiful voice & the music is excellent! I knew some of the lullabies on the CD, but when I heard them this time -from Tina Malia -they all sounded ... magical! (especially Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)

Continuing to specialize in the art of curve-throwing, R.E.M. followed up its 1991 smash, Out of Time, with this fragile album of soft melodies and string arrangements. The sympathetic ballad "Everybody Hurts" must have prevented countless suicide attempts, while the Andy Kaufman tribute "Man on the Moon" (with Michael Stipe affecting an Elvis Presley imitation) and the rock-into-oblivion "Drive" are among the quartet's strongest hits. (The opening line, "Hey, kids, rock and roll," isn't so much a rallying cry as an expression of anxiety.) It takes a few listens for its charms to unfold, but Automatic is the gem between bigger hits Out of Time and Monster. --Steve Knopper

The last worthwhile R.E.M. album.......2007-07-05

For all the angst and harrowing depression that seemed to be the vogue of the time, few tried making it as soft and beautiful as the arrangements found on Automatic For the People. Several of these tracks are quite affecting even after multiple listens and even the overplayed hit, "Everybody Hurts," is good in small doses. "Man on the Moon" is one of their all-time best tunes, "Drive" a fabulous opener, and "Nightswimming" one of their most underappreciated singles.

One must wonder how much credit is due to John Paul Jones, who does the strings on several songs, but consider this something of a comeback for R.E.M. after their last two limp efforts--sadly, the comeback would NOT last. A bit overrated (some call it the band's best album), but still a very solid effort all around, and the last R.E.M. album worth picking up for anyone except hardcore fans.

OUTSTANDING...Enduring...everlasting...a musical giant!.......2007-06-29

It was the summer of my lost youth, and my cousin and friends were diving on the cliffs in Newport, Rhode Island, and we knew we shouldn't have been there, and I was bringing a boom box with us everywhere. They wanted LL Cool J and the like, and I pumped out "Out of Time" and they all gave me dirty looks, but moved their heads and got into it just the same.

When 'Automatic for the People' came out, it was if I had found my place in the world. I was an older, (much older) teenager, but I seemed to find my niche in this busy sector of life, and Michael Stipe seemed to portray in no uncertain terms, what it was like to be alive.

I was alive. 'Everybody Hurts' is an anthem for a lost culture, not just a generation. How splendid the video was, how utterly bewildering the song was, still echoing somewhere in my minds eye today, stood sinister and barren on the wooded knoll of my future; and I thought, with so much energy, that things couldn't be that bad. That with some thought and drive, anyone could really get through anything that this cruel world throws at them. That is what this album meant to me friends.

'Automatic for the People' is pure, refined Stipe at his finest. Those days where REM was splitting ears all over the globe, and the baby boomer generation asking 'wow, who is this.'

I miss those days of wonderment and fine music. I miss those days of knowing and anticipating your favorite bands next album, and not wondering, not hoping, but KNOWING, that it would be magical, tangible, and that it would speak to you. That every song would be your favorite and you would know each one word for word, just like 'Green'.

Songs like, 'Find the River' and 'Try not To Breath' told me that things are what they are, and REM proved beyond all recognition and understanding, that they, all four of them at that time??? were the band to be reckoned with......

.....Michael Stipe has given us poetry in motion and I thank him for his prose and talent, and for that, for that small, simple part of this gigantic metaphor we find ourselves in, is worth living...just to hear this poetic album of solitude and understanding....

As others have stated before me, "Automatic for the
People" is one of the most enduring musical achievements of the 1990's.

In fact, I would put it in the leagues of the finest albums of all time, on the run with RadioHead's 'Ok Computer'.

One of the greatest albums ever released!.......2007-06-08

Automatic For The People is REM's 1993 album released as follow up to the successful Out Of Time. The album is unique in REM's discography in that it relies heavily on string arrangements, which gives the album a nice, cozy, and sentimental feel.

The albums kicks off with the outstanding Drive before driving us through 11 tracks of pure excellence that includes the brilliant Try Not To Breathe and The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite, the heartbreaking hit single Everybody Hurts (a song once dedicated to the late Nirvana frontman, and Michael Stipe's friend Kurt Cobain), the politically charged Ignoreland, the elusive Sweetness Follows and Star Me Kitten, the Andy Kaufman ode and hit single Man On The Moon (the song that would eventually become the foundation for a movie of the same title in 1999 starring Jim Carrey as Kaufman), the ethereal Nightswimming, and the folksy album closer Find The River.

REM went on to release other powerful albums in the years that followed Automatic, most notably Monster, but Automatic stands out as an album that really pulled me in, and made me appreciate REM to this day.

I'm not getting it..........2007-05-12

This was a massive success, completely dwarfing even Out of Time - not to mention each of the group's previous albums - in terms of units moved. And I can see why. It's a very accessible collection, much easier to listen to than the murky early records. And Stipe's clearly enunciating his words, rather than mumble his way through. Which is where the controversy sets in. Depending on who you ask, Automatic is either a brilliant masterwork of an album, among the best R.E.M. ever put out, or it's an abomination. At first I put it in category 2 - initially, only Man on the Moon and Everybody Hurts grabbed me. Now I think it occupies the vast territory between the two, much like Green.
The beginning and end of this record are as strong as any - the orchestrated Drive sets the tone nicely, and the ballad Try Not to Breathe continues to. I assume you've heard The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite (AKA callmewhenyoutrietowakeher), and it's a brilliantly stupid song. And if you've turned on the radio for the past decade you know Everybody Hurts, which is brilliant but NOT stupid - a surprisingly emotional power-ballad. Great, great, GREAT song.
You might as well skip straight ahead to track ten, though, because there's nothing of value coming for a long stretch. New Orleans Instrumental #1, Sweetness Follows, Monty Got a Raw Deal, Ignoreland, Star Me Kitten... No, no, no. What are they doing here? Get rid of 'em all. In fact, let's forget they ever existed.
Okay, now we can get back to the good stuff. Man on the Moon was overplayed as hell back in the '90s, but circa 2007 it's much easier to appreciate the mature lyrics, deeply layered harmonies, and the song's atmosphere. I think this is my favorite off the album, maybe even the group's best of the '90s. Love it. Same with the lush, nostalgiac Nightswimming, the fourth ubergiganto radio hit. Another favorite of mine. And Find the River brings the whole thing to a lovely close.
So, not a bad album, and thankfully there's nothing as bad as Shiny Happy People or Stand. But this is unbelievably far from R.E.M.'s greatest achievement - even if it kicks the crap out of Out of Time.

An Instant Love Affair!.......2007-04-26

R.E.M. had had a difficult job following up the success of Out Of Time but they had finally managed to produce an album equally as good and commercially more successful. Its commercial success had laid in the fact that the album had more songs which appealled as singles and the success of 'Man On The Moon', 'The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite' and of course 'Everybody Hurts'.

The album starts off with two songs which lead the listener into the album nicely; Drive and Try Not To Breathe. Just as the middle tracks are sometimes overlooked by the brilliance of the three major songs and Nightswimming, the first two tracks can sometimes be forgotten, but both are excellent and well placed as lead ups to The Sidewinder.... and Everybody Hurts. The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite is one of REM's happy songs and is in beautiful contrast with the sombre Everybody Hurts. Although the lyrics for the latter suggest it is about overcoming problems it is only occasionally that the music matches this and it is impossible to describe Everybody Hurts as anything other than, in contrast to The Sidewinder, a sad REM song. This may be the sort of description a child would use but the songs themselves are plain and simple - one fun and happy the other sad and sombre.

Althought the middle of the album lacks the greatness that sparks the rest of Automatic For The People, the tracks are still of a high quality and in particular Monty Got A Raw Deal and Sweetness Follows. Ignoreland has good lyrics and is the groups political song on the album but the music lets it down somewhat - however it still adds an extra dimension to the album.

It is the last three tracks that really confirm the albums place in greatness however. Man On The Moon is simply Stipe at his best as an entertainer and the song just pips The Sidewinder as the most upbeat song on the album. Again, as they had earlier on the album, REM follow up a happy song with a tragic one and for me, personally, one of their best ever. Nightswimming is the song sums up the album personally and also has the advantage of not being played countless times in the media. Without doubt the highpoint for anyone buying this album who is familiar only with REM's major commercial successes. The album closes as quietely as it began with Find The River, and it is these three songs which end the album that show REM at their very best.
In its time, Automatic For The People had been voted 6th by the public for a book by Virgin acclaiming the top 100 albums ever in England. Although there are often these polls a closer look shows why this demonstrates how good this album is. The Beatles' Revolver had claimed top spot and the group had had two other albums in the top five. In second Radiohead had had The Bends and in fourth they had Ok Computer. When coming only behind the most acclaimed group of all time and the most acclaimed group of nineties Britain, it is clear that this album does appeal over a wide circumference of people. Along with Out Of Time this is REM at their original best and a must for even the very slightest of fans.

CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08

They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.

I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.

We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.

Seek better versions.......2006-12-09

If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.

It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27

It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.

Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.

It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.

To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

What could possibly be cooler than hipping kids to some of the best pop music ever made? Music for Little People makes this project simple by producing a batch of the Beatles' sunniest songs performed by a prime adult band and your children's peers and slightly reworked in kid-friendly keys. The result is largely devoid of over-the-top cutesy-poo histrionics--these kids can really sing and the harmonies are quite commendable. Young listeners will be thrilled to sing along on the bouncy chorus of "Life Goes On," to count and do the alphabet on "All Together Now," and to distinguish the amusing sounds of a penny whistle, mandolin, and zither. The songs of the Beatles are timeless. I loved most of the renditions on this CD, but there were a couple that I would have liked to have been done differently. This is strictly a matter of personal taste, and I'd still recommend it. I have no complaints about the seller, either.

Most songs Pretty Good for young kids.......2007-02-19

My children are boys ages 5 and 6. They love the "Birthday" song on this CD, actually. They also love "Yellow Submarine" and "All Together Now." A few others are OK, such as "Ob-La-Di" and "Octopus's Garden" and "When I'm 64." No, it's not the Beetles singing it, and I personally usually hate cover albums; it's disconcerting at first to hear a different version or different voice singing a familiar classic song. (We usually listen to kids music as well as "real" party songs-type music and other "real" music including even Johnny Cash.) And, yes, it's a little irritating to have some of the intro's by kids, such as a child complaining that it's been raining all winter before the kids sing "Here Comes the Sun." However, my kids (and their friends) do enjoy hearing other kids singing the songs. And I enjoy many of the songs myself. My biggest complaint is that many of the songs are too mellow and deemed to be not very fun by my bunch. Perhaps more suited to younger kids or girls or calmer kids? I would recommend it overall.

Fun version for kids.......2006-09-11

Who can sing Beatles songs better than the Beatles? No one, of course! But it sure beats Barney! Or, at least it's a nice change from many kids'albums. I play regular Beatles' music for my kids too. But they also like this album a whole lot. Another reviewer said that children like to hear children singing and this is definitely true in our case. I think it's well done and I base much of my choices in childrens' music on what I can stand to hear repeatedly in the car. So this one definitey qualifies for that standard. I'd highly recommend it.

The kids love it...and I like it too........2006-03-16

My two kids love it --- my daughter since she was 1 and my son since he was 3 - and we've had it for about 6 months now. Ok not all the songs are so great and yes the Beatles sing it better then a bunch of kids do (but kids like hearing kids singing) and every once and a while I try to skip something but my son usually stops me and says "No, I want to hear the ...whatever... song. " They especially love ObLaDi, Octopus's Garden, Yellow Submarine, Birthday and All Together Now.

A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02

This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.

Great CD.......2005-11-01

This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.

Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27

This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.

I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.

Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.

Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08

This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of

the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have

done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some

of which still show some of their age, but come across quite

well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this

disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to

get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any

more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to

try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's

early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.

If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!

The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07

I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.

I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.

I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

This is like the music to one of those theme park Celebrate America type shows. The musical arrangements have that hokey, somewhat dated, overly sweet and enthusiatic feel I hate. I thought I was getting the standard versions of these songs but what I got was the cruise ship extravaganza, yuck!

to think that "this land is your land" is a patriotic song is laughable at best, however is a common misconception of the song. you'd think that the creators of this cd would research the songs they put on the cd a little more, and find that "this land is your land" is actually a protest song (original lyrics contained lyrics such as "on that sign there it said private property/but on the other side it didn't say nothing/that side was made for you and me", an obvious attack on capitalism".

Great Place to Start a Patriotic Music Collection.......2002-09-12

This choral collection features a majority of the best known and loved patriotic songs from our country's history. I'll admit I was a little leery of the choral part when I first picked it up, but I've found that, for the most part, it works really well.

It especially stands out on the acappella version of "My Country 'Tis of Thee." It's absolutely stunning. Other fun songs are "This Land is Your Land," which I really wasn't familiar with before I bought this, and a personal recent favorite song "God Bless the USA." I love having the "Armed Forces Medley" on here so I can learn these songs. And the instrumental arrangement on "Stars and Stripes Forever Medley" at the end has me taping my toes every time I hear it.

There are a couple missteps, however. I've heard better versions of "The Star Spangled Banner." I think one reason I'm disappointed with it is that they only include one verse. I love the other verses of our national anthem, and wished they'd included at least one more since they included multiple verses of all the other songs. Also, "If My People" and "God Save America," while find songs, just don't seem to fit here.

Decent interpretation marred by terrible intonation.......2007-04-06

I had great difficulty restraining myself from turning this off when listening to it for the first time, because London does such a terrible job of being anywhere near in tune for much of it. Combined with many missed notes in the brass, messy passagework in the strings, and woodwind playing that seems intent on doing anything BUT creating any sort of phrase, it's doubtful this is worth even the small price Amazon has it listed for.

For a budget recording of this that's actually decent, I'd be much more inclined to buy Naxos' release of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine's version under Andrew Mogrelia.

excellent choice for Romeo & Juliet.......2006-04-14

I am writing mainly in response to Sarman (Sweden). I own the fforte edition and have played this many years on several systems. On Onkyo DR-UN7 dvd receiver driving Epos 22's, the sound is excellent, as it was using Panasonic dvd player, NAD amplifier, and Epos 11's. Previn is one of best interpreters of Prokofiev--after all, he is a Russian born in Berlin. I don't know who could call either the playing or the re-mastering "dull". The natural alternative is Gergiev, re-issued on Philips great 50 recordings at medium price. That is also quite good. I would avoid the others.

Superior interpretation, same remastering.......2006-04-01

This interpretation is dramatic and organic, for example the "Death of Tybalt" is real spooky, whereas in "the people continue to make merry" the orchestra sounds like a local band in a parade, and so on. It sounds Prokofiev ingenious to me. This is clearly my favourite out of R&J recordings. The Ancerl/CPO heartbreaking recording of some 10 scenes might be the most delicious of them all, but again it does not diminish the Previn recording.

Someone called this Previn recording "lackluster". It could have to do with the recording technique, the sound is slightly dull at times. This is the same remastering as previously released on EMI double forte. However at times I think it sounds fine. It might have to do with my HiFi system or small speakers, I might try another pair. I'd appreciate comments from other reviewers on this.
