This release has received too much hype. Read before buying........2004-03-28
THE NOT SO GOOD: The disappointment comes not only from the hype but that for the most part the songs are either too loungy or, with some notable exceptions, combines it with sappy blaxploitation clichés that are stripped of Stevie's unique energy. I am all for reinterpretation of songs and listening to new things, but this is mediocre at best. The same reviews that praised this release go on to say that one of its positive attributes is that it shows one how influential and inspirational Stevie was to so many singers around him. Duh!!! No need to spend cash on an import release to learn this. Ray Barretto butchers Stevie's "Pastime Paradise" although it has a great piano riff that won't quit. The Supreme's version of "Bead Weather" starts a little too close for comfort to an Al Green song, and then degenerates into a bad sounding young Michael Jackson. No harmonies or anything that resembles the Supremes. Cedar Walton's "Another Star" sounds like the ultimate filler. The CD ends with Ramsey Lewis' jazzy but totally flaccid take on "Spring High."
THE ALMOST GOOD: I don't want to give the impression that this collection sucks in its entirety as Jose Feliciano does a GOOD job with "Golden Lady" and Sergio Mendes and Brasil '77 bring a soft touch to "Superstition" that totally changes the song into something aurally interesting. I also liked the instrumentals on Charles Earland's "I Was Made To Love Her" but without vocals the song loses its punch. Hugo Montenegro's "You Got It Bad Girl" is yet another instrumental but has some cool production work that somehow captures Stevie's essence and almost overcomes the lack of lyrics. Carl Anderson's "Buttercup" barely overcomes its quiet storm feel with some nice vocals but it still feels phoned in.
THE GOOD/GREAT: My favorite cut on the CD is Main Ingredient's "Don't You Worry About A Thing" as it takes the song at face value and although it's not Stevie, it does sound great. Gene Harris' version of "As" is quite good and almost sounds like Stevie (as does Norman Brown's "Too High"), but sounds a little derivative and not anywhere as good as the most recent cover by Mary J. Blige and George Michael, who really do it justice by bringing something new. First Choice's "Love Having You Around" at least brings some LIFE to the song and deserves to be congratulated for that versus others in this collection. I am a HUGE Minnie Riperton fan and I really wanted to like her take on "Stick Together," and it's actually surprisingly good as she makes it her own and she sounds so alive. The piano on this cut is awesome.
Any potential buyer should know that this package comes with two "versions" with the first cd mixing all the songs into a non-stop mix, while the second cd segregates the songs. I actually found mixed version marginally more appealing as it makes for good background music. It's very hard to give this release a rating as Stevie usually earns 5+ stars from me but this "celebration" gets a generous 2 from me.
