A legend in the making..........2005-08-20
My infatuation with French house musician Ernest Saint Laurent started back in 2001 when I first heard "Clumsy Lobster" on the Groovejet compilation, "Groovejet: The Compilation." I was completely blown away by it, and his name stayed with me ever since. I only recently discovered the existence of this album, his first full-length studio album. Obviously, I snatched it up immediately, and upon receiving it, I wasn't disappointed in the least.
Available on the album is numerous classic songs of his, including the full original version of "Clumsy Lobster," "In The Sky," and "Body Flowers," all of which are house tracks of epic proportions. "Concrete Jungle," the song that opens the album up, is some grainy electrobreak fair, which is a different style for St. Laurent, but one which he still pulls off quite well. "Perfect Love" is the closest thing to a ballad you'll find on the album, with blippy, syncopated drum work and smooth vocals. "Waitin 4 U" is a crossover of R&B, Disco, and Electro, resulting in a laid-back, yet extremely slick and funky house track.
Track 4, on the other hand, is easily the highlight of the entire album. "Geometric Light," one of the tracks that's exclusive to the album (ie: not available on any of his vinyl releases), exists somewhere between house and pop, but the way in which both genres are melded creates the most energetic and sexiest song on the album. With vocals by Superscamp, it sounds like what would happen if you got Daft Punk and N*SYNC together in a studio, except the vocals and lyrics are a lot less boyish and a lot more sultry.
The album also includes a number of curious or ambient interludes, such as "Parliament's Interlude," which is strongly reminescent of Daft Punk's more retro-enriched entries like "Verdis Quo" or "Short Circuit."
Lastly, "Eighteen" finishes the album off with some extremely fast-paced videogame-like electro, consisting of sweeping pads; quirky, echoing leads; and crunchy analog drum programming. Thankfully, it doesn't end just yet. Exactly a minute after "Eighteen" dies out and leaves behind silence, a hidden track kicks in. And this hidden track is just as hip as the rest, with saxophone work by Benjamin Petit and vocals by Hafdis Hud. It skips about with housey e-piano chords and a stuttering drumbeat that would allow it to fit very easily into just about any Deep House set.
All in all, this album is a fantastically cohesive blend of retro house and electro from start to finish. If you like Daft Punk, but were strongly let down by the repetitive nature of their latest album, make sure you pick this up. You won't be disappointed. Personally, I can't WAIT for Ernest Saint Laurent's next full-length album.
