The band that Charles Mingus, the doyen of jazz's mercurial polymaths, pulled together for his early-1964 European tour was phenomenaland here they are playing 130 minutes worth of live music no one's ever heard. Pianist Jaki Byard, alto saxophonist/flutist/bass clarinetist Eric Dolphy, tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, trumpeter Johnny Coles, and longtime drummer Dannie Richmond came together for the Mingus tour knowing that Dolphy would be staying in Europe after their gigshe died tragically just 12 weeks after this gig. And Coles would come perilously close to death himself with a stomach ulcer within a month of the band's Cornell date, forcing him off the tour. So the music here is particularly special and musically resplendent. There is considerable overlap with the The Great Concert of Charles Mingus, but that 2-CD set is sans the ailing Coles, who fattens the sound here: playing beautifully as "Johnny O'Coles" on the unlikely "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling." But Eric Dolphy, his every breath is poetry: from his palpitating bass clarinet on the pugnacious "Fables of Faubus" to the tipsy, whirling flute he plays on "Jitterbug Waltz," a tune he loved playing. The sound here is less crisp than The Great Concert, thick in the middle and ill-defined when it comes to Richmond's drums, leaving the group's interplay like an ear-magnet. "Take the 'A' Train" pays soulful, blossoming homage to Billy Strayhorn even as you can hear the band tightening their grip collectively, learning to fly as a unit. Unheard music of this caliber demands a listen, and here the rewards are bountiful. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:
Best of the best.......2004-03-14
There's something for every Tchaikovsky lover on this disc. From Swan Lake to Onegin, many of Tchaikovsky's most-known melodies are on this disc. I'd have preferred more than an excerpt of the first movement of Piano Concerto No. 1, but this disc is a great introduction to Tchaikovsky's works.

Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Florida-born alto saxophonist Julian Cannonball Adderley distinguished himself as a member of Miles Davis's groups (he's the sultry alto on Kind of Blue) and with the hard-bop ensembles he co-led with his cornet-playing brother Nat. This recording, produced by Orrin Keepnews in 1963 for the Riverside label, features Adderley performing bossa nova-based compositions. Anchored by Brazilian composer and pianist Sergio Mendes's band (with alto saxophonist Paulo Moura), Adderley's singing sax lines float over the sunny Rio rhythms, owing more to Benny Carter than Charlie Parker. The renditions of Antonio Carlos Jobim's standards "Corcovado" and "Once I Loved" and Joao Donato's "Minha Saudades" are comparable to Stan Getz's Legendary records from the same period, showing anew that jazz and South American music have learned much from each other. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Album Description
This 1962 project marked the American recording debut of Brazilian masters Sergio Mendes and Dom Um Romao in a program of great jazz-inflected sambas by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Donato and others. Includes two alternate takes.

Necessary addition to any Jazz collection.......2007-05-01
Marcelo Maciel has summed up all the details below, and this album really fits in very well with any general music collection. I actually like this Brazilian album more than any other of Cannonball Adderley's I've heard, and thankfully it ages like good wine and just gets better with time. Be sure not to get the 2006 Limited Edition for $23.99 though, the extra 14 dollars only ensures that you don't get the 2 bonus tracks (the alternate take of Corcovado and the single version of clouds). I can't see many copies of that one being sold.
Bossa Nova lovers... or for that matter... anyone interested in Jazz... Get This Album!!!!!.......2006-03-03
This is quintessential Bossa Nova... and the best thing is that I'm learning so much just reading the other reviews here.... I love Bossa Nova... it's my favorite Latin music and my favorite Jazz music....
A nice surprise.......2003-05-03
I've always been a fan of Cannonball's standard jazz work (esp. with Miles Davis), so I was delighted to hear about this CD. I'm also a fan of Sergio Mendes who plays piano on this CD. The first cut is very carefree and makes me feel as if I'm walking along the sandy beaches of Brazil. A wonderful intro to Sergio Mendes. It's a good buy.
Cannonball's Bossa Nova -corrected.......2001-12-28
The Jazz-Samba genre, very expressive in the 60's, was inauurated, in Brazil, by Meirelles and the Copa 5 group, in the famous record with Luiz Carlos Vinhas and Pedro Paulo (piano and trumpet). In United States, the genre came in 1962 with Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd with the excellent "Jazz Samba", in which some brazilian music's pearls are explored with the sophistication of the guitar-tenor saxophone combination. The Getz's soft tone sound and the Byrd's complex and melodic improvisations contributed to this. It is irrefutable that the peak of this brazilian music fashion in USA came in 1963, with "Getz/Gilberto", in which the samba's broken rithmys, that was a non-solved problem in Jazz Samba, are well managed by Milton Banana.
Following this line, "Cannonball's Bossa Nova" record brings a experienced drummer, Dom Um Romão, who also is present in the Sinatra/ Tom Jobim record. This secure rhytmic support is noticed too in the Durval Ferreira's accompaniment, simple and, so, beatiful. With Sergio Mendes, about his short solos, we have a paralell in the minimalistic improvisation of Jobim. This cool touch it's well perceived in Jobim's solos in the music "O Grande Amor" (Getz/Gilberto) and in the record "The Composer of Desafinado Plays" (1963), in which, almost always, only the right hand is used. Cannonball, a high quality saxophonist, complete the group. His perfect technique allows the full exploration of his musical ideas. His extrem softness and potent sonority (remembers Getz sometimes) and his bebop/bluesy musical speech, Charlie Parker's heritage, are perfect not to a bossa nova record, but for a jazz/bossa approach.
The entire record gets a fine taste, but "Amor em Paz (Once I Loved)", lovely Jobim's melody, shows the great artist who is Cannonball Adderley. Not in his "soul music" incursions, but in his great and pungent lyrical sense that he gives to the ballads ("Stars Fell in Alabama", in the "C.A Quintet in Chicago", 1959, is my preferred). It is almost irresistible to compare Corcovado (Quiet Nights) in this record with Getz/Gilberto record, but both are great, each one with his qualities. For the jazz lovers and for the brazilian music lovers this record is, farther indispensable, a great joy, a great example of good music, a... so, listen it!!! ASAP!!!

Simply put, an excellent bargain!.......2006-07-16
Philippe Entremont may be better known as a world-class pianist than a conductor. As a pianist, he collaborated with prominent figures including Leonard Bernstein and Eugene Ormandy, but he himself turns out to be a very good conductor.
This album, with Maestro Entremont leading the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, features Tchaikovsky's two best-known and most beautiful chamber works: Serenade for Strings and Souvenir de Florence. Although not as painstakingly emotional as Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic, nor as sensual and passionate as Ormandy as his "Philadelphia Sound", Entremont and his ensemble offers an highly respectable performance, with great control without any flamboyance, and above all the lush, moving strings comprised of members representing the music capital of the world.
Naxos is known for offering recordings done by less-than-prolific artists at a budget price, but this is an absolute winner. A stunning performance with only little money out of one's wallet. Simply put, an excellent bargain!
Totally Excellent.......2003-08-13
I was listening to a biography of Tchaikovsky on cassette and
the instructor mentioned the 2 pieces on this CD as relatively
unknown masterpieces of chamber music. I was very happy to see that
I could get both of them on one CD. I am not qualified to give any sort of analysis
of the performances (by the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, 1990) because I
just listen to music, but the 5-star rating I give the CD says enough,
and the instructor who praised these pieces so highly was absolutely
correct! The liner notes are sparse yet complete.
Among the best Serenades available.......2001-02-17
The previous reviewer talked about Souvenir de Florence on the CD, which is indeed very good. However, I am less familiar with Souvenir than the Serenade, so I'll comment on that instead. At the risk of sounding trite, the performance here is among the best available. Vienna Chamber Orchestra does a wonderful job trying to maintain the clarity of the work, allowing the listener to hear the individual parts of the work. For example, I've never really noticed some of the beautiful countermelodies in the Waltz until I listened to this recording. The interpretation is also first-rate. Entremont brings out the warmth of the music well, plus the tempo never drags. The result is a finely performed work that will captures the listener's attention throughout the piece. Oh, did I mention that the recorded sound is VERY good?
At this price, this is a deal not to miss. If you are looking for one recording of the Serenade, this is it. Even if you already own the Serenade, chances are that you don't yet have a recording of the rarely recorded Souvenir. Definitely give this CD a try.
Superb performance of the Souvenir de Florence.......1999-04-15
Performances of the orchestral arrangement of Souvenir de Florence are rare, as it seems are recordings. The work however is quite lovely and evocative and suits a string orchestra capable of playing as both an entity and a collection of fine soloists. Look no further therefore than this recording for an excellent interpretation.
The more familiar serenade is also a fine example of the work of one of Europe's leading Chamber Orchestras.
I play this disc frequently, most especially the Souvenir and have only a minor quibble and that is with a rather fast take up of the opening of the work. Otherwise this has to be one of the best quality recordings I have heard from Naxos but then they used an interesting recording venue, Casino Baumgartner in Vienna, and presumeably Austrian engineers.
Take it to your desert island!

Very Good, but beware technical problems.......2007-05-26
Overall, I really enjoy these pieces. The playing is good, and the sound is quite live, which I enjoy. My favorite piece is the Quintet in G Major Op.111, though the sextet in Bb is a close second. I am a perfectionist, and my familiarity with these pieces led me to be a little dissapointed, which is why there is only 4 stars. My dissapointment stems from two facts:
1. In the first movement of the Brahms G Major Op.111, the string quintet elects not to take the repeat in m.56, so you will never hear the first ending on this recording and thus only get one shot at the awesome cello opening. I haven't listened closely enough to the other pieces on this set to discern if they avoided other repeats or not, but for the most part, they appear to be there.
2. There are technical printing problems. Though the recording is so live that you can hear the breath of the musicians and their fingers fall on the strings, there are some actual technical pops in the recording. Perhaps it was a transfer problem from analog to digital, as the recordings are old. Most of these pops are minor, but they are dissapointing for an audiophile such as myself. My CDs are pristine (no scratches at all), and even the first time playing them these pops were there. So, here's the list of what I've found thus far:
CD 3:
Track 6: Pops & clicks at 1:19 & 1:22.
CD 5:
Track 1: Pops at 6:01.
Track 2: Pops & clicks at 0:13, 3:56, & 6:16.
Track 5: Pop at 12:07.
Track 7: Pop & clicks at 6:11, 7:45, 7:51-7:52 (these are quite noticable), 7:59, 8:03, 8:11.
Track 8: Pop at 7:34.
It is a well-played set; hopefully they will get the printing correct on the next batch.
This is how all Brahms should be played!.......2007-02-14
There isn't much to say about this set, but I'll say what there is to say: These players play the Brahms chamber music here with such emotion, musical understanding, and overall perfection that this set should be made into a must for all Brahms chamber music lovers. The Amadeus quartet, along with all of the other performers, including Eschenbach on the piano and Leister on the clarinet, really know what they're doing and play it so beautifully that the listener will want to hear the pieces again and again until the CD player is practically worn out. These Brahms works are some of the most sublime works of the later 19th century. For such quality music and great sound, especially for having been recorded in the 1960's, the price is also great. I recommend this set very highly, and hope you decide to get and enjoy it as much as I do.
Mastery and joy.......2006-12-12
Because they lasted such a long time and toward the end didn't play at their best, I found reasons to overlook the Madeus Qt. But in this 9-CD set of the complete chamber music of Brahms, there are some sublime performances--I would especially point to both String Sextets, for example. In every instance the style of the Amadeus is full of vibrancy and joy, and their ensemble isn't baased on technical perfection but rather a kinship of musical taste and feeling (this puts them poles apart from the Emerson Qt., for me at least). I also love the Brahms chamber performances on Sony with Yo-Yo Ma, Isaac Stern, emanuel Ax, and friends, but this DG set is altogether sweeter and more lyrical.
Since Amazon neglects to list the additional players who join the Amadeus for the works that aren't soely for a string quartet, here's the run-down from Tower:
