At the time of his death in 2004, the indomitable Rick James was in the process of unleashing yet another wave of freakiness on the general populace. He had penned 10 songs, half of what he hoped would become a double-disc set, and holed himself up in his L.A. home studio to record them. Though the project never came to fruition as he envisioned it, Deeper Still culls the tracks he had in the can plus a single cover, and it opens wide a window on the freak-master's mindset in his final days. The gentle title song swerves away from empty come-ons and excessive suavity to celebrate romance and (of all things) commitment, and a later track, "Sapphire," again dispenses with signature slinkiness in favor of affirmation--here, strong black women see some love. Evidence of James's fabled "sex, drugs, and funk & soul" lifestyle peek through on the steamy "Do You Want to Play" and the autobiographical cuts "Taste" and "Stroke," but mostly Deeper Still represents a mellowing. "Guinnevere," the cover, is a great example: James, who was still in fine vocal form, gets comfortable with a meandering David Crosby meditation on a green-eyed lady who longs, above all, to be set free. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Rick James' new CD, "Deeper Still".......2007-06-29

I would give 5 stars to Rick Jame's latest CD for how much I have played it and loved it since I purchased it last week! In honor of Rick - I appreciate the fact that the record producer pushed to have this CD released! My fave song is "Stop It.." I hear it in my head constantly. I also enjoyed "Deeper Still" and "Taste". "Do you Wanna Play?" with Howard Hewitt was quite simply a classic Rick ballad. He had (and always will) have a unique voice; you always knew it was Rick. I have been a fan of Rick's since he and the Stone City Band first toured in Oakland - even checked out Prince as the "opening act for Rick". He was "the Man" back in the day and will be missed always...

Rick James was a musical genious and definitely the "King of Funk"!!If you are a true Rick James fan (and loved his vocals and ballads), pick up this CD! If you miss the old Rick with the upbeat, fast-paced songs, this CD isn't for you. It is for the true Rick James fans that saw "Deeper Still" into who Rick was, a soulful balladeer....

Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Good; not great Rick James.......2007-06-23

It was a welcome posthumous gift from the King of Punk Funk. The album boasts some interesting twists such as Howard Hewitt on vocals even (though the song is dreadful) and the inclusion of a remarkable cover of the CSN classic, Guineverre (a stroke of genius and a throwback to Rick's early pre motown days that made me want to go get out my Great White Cane album). But the nasty, new wave edge that Rick James funk has always had is in short supply (after Stroke and Not Alone, that is pretty much it). You can hear some invisible R&B producers and writers attempting to get him back on urban radio and BET. The cheesy liners notes and packaging give the set a very low budget, independent look - there arent even any player credits even though there is an insert to hype the forthcoming book. Stone City Records could have taken a cue from Prince's NPG Records on art direction. The fuzzy cover photo looks as though it was taken the morning after an all night coke binge.

I went to Rick's last album, Urban Rhapsody, and it is alot beter than this one. That album is vintage Rick without being dated or "over-modernized" - it was a shame that it didnt get more commercial recognition because it was his best since Throwin' Down. Deeper Still should have been in the same vein. It actually is to some extint as half of it sounds like outtakes that didnt make the cut for Rhapsody - maybe they are since Rick was long gone by the time this album surfaced. Don't get me wrong. It is not bad - in fact it is good overall with a few cuts saving it from being slightly less than mediocre. You have to be a hardcore Rick James fan to appreciate it fully - I think. I have been one myself since Mary Jane -- but I know will be bored with this album in a month.

5 out of 5 stars Grown Folk Funk n Roll.......2007-06-08

I know some of you will beg to differ but I am the BIGGEST RICK JAMES fan ever! I never missed a concert and bought every album that he released. I waited for 2 1/2 long years for this album to be released and when it finally was I was no where near disapointed. A lot of folk want to harp on his legal troubles and the deamons in his life but push that crap aside and listen to the genius that was Rick James. From "COME GET IT" to "URBAN RAPSODY", the funk was alive and kickin. His voice was one of the best in music. We have all heard the classics (YOU AND I, MARY JANE, BUSTIN OUT, FIRE IT UP, GIVE IT TO ME BABY, SUPERFREAK etc), but take the time to listen to Rick's ballads and I'm not just talking about "FIRE & DESIRE" and "EBONY EYES". One listen to "JEFFERSON BALL" from the Bustin Out album or "MY LOVE" from the "THROWIN DOWN" album and you too should be convinced that his voice was superior to most. This new album "DEEPER STILL" will go down as a classic. After all the drama in his life, "DEEPER STILL" represents RICK JAMES THE ADULT. The title track is tearing adult radio down and shows that the funk in him still lives...it never died. His remake of "GUINNEVERE" is simply beautiful. The groovy "STOP IT" is straight riding music and could possibly be the next single from this album. "DO YOU WANNA PLAY" with JOHNNY GILL and HOWARD HEWITT is a stone cold blue lights in the basement joint and Rick more than holds his own with two of R&B's greatest voices ever. "SAPPHIRE" is his ode to the black woman (i.e. EBONY EYES). It's a beautiful song (BLOW DANNY)! This album will not disappoint. From the funk of "NOT ALONE" and "STROKE" (about his trying times) to the smoothness of "Maybe" Rick was headed back to the top of the charts with this one. PICK IT UP...you will totally love it. Too bad he's not here to enjoy the success that could have been (or will be). Imagine a video for "DEEPER STILL"...
RIP JAMES AMBROSE JOHNSON JR, (aka SLICK RICK JAMES). I miss you brother !

5 out of 5 stars This one's a keeper!.......2007-06-02

Rick James was the type of musician that left you never knowing what to expect when purchasing his music, aside from knowing that in the end a good time was to have been had by all. This album is just the same and the outcome no different! My official review can be found on soultracks.com but I have to say that this is one of the best albums I've have had the pleasure of reviewing recently. Diversity through earch song, with nothing sounding vaguely similar to any song previously played. A blend of uptempo, ballad, mellow, funky grooves makes "Deeper Still" one for your personal collection!

4 out of 5 stars Album of the year.......2007-05-30

Rick James Dominated the funk in the 80's and he pretty much single handly kept the Funk Alive back in the day. he has never gotten his due because others stole his Concepts and Ideas. well on this Album Rick played a whole different hand and it works. Rick already did Funk, R&B,Blues, Jazz, Pop,Rap and everything else in between. He is a Underrated Smooth Singer. Rick has some of the tightest slow Jams Ever. the Man was a Musical Genius. He understood style. the title track along with 'Taste" are on point."Sapphire" is a Great tribute Song to Black Women. Rick was a strong Poet and never afraid to show his emotions. you ain't gonna catch Rick James having to Perform behind a Sheet on National Tv or something. he was striaght to the Point and direct. He should Win more Grammys and be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was One of a Kind and he left a lasting impact. he was Soulful. He was a Strong Soul Brother who understood changing the game up. His game got stolen, but Rick this time went into a whole different direction and it works. RIP to Brother Rick James. the Genius Lives on.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing.......2007-07-12

I used various tracks from this CD for a Cub Scout ceremony and it really set the mood..I searched on Amazon for 3 hours trying to find the right drum music and this is certainly it !

4 out of 5 stars Very good new age-native fusion.......2005-06-10

Discount the self-important blather from "professional" drummers and First Nation/Capitolized Ethnic Group people you see here and buy this CD if you enjoy better quality new age music in a native vein. This CD and its highly successful predecessor was NEVER meant to be a hard-core exploration of genuine Native American drumming, flute or chanting, though it masterfully incorporates such music alongside other simple nativist percussion. Yes, persons looking outside the world music (or new age) genres for actual Native chanting and drumming may be disappointed, but it never hurts to open your ears to new things. But if that's too hard and you crave the "real thing," may I suggest Tokeya Inajin, Dik Darnell or Carlos Nakai.

4 out of 5 stars EARTH CENTERED MUSIC.......2005-04-28

I HEARD THIS CD IN A SPIRITUAL SERVICE. I ENJOYED IT! I SEARCH IN THE WEB AND I BOUGHT IT! I LISTEN IT IN THE CAR OR WHEN I WANT TO FEEL MY SELF "EARTH CENTERED". REALLY IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR "DRUMS" LIKE IN LATIN MUSIC, MODERN MUSIC, IT ISNT.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A SOFT/ACTIVE RELAXING MUSIC, SO THAT YOU CAN FEEL ONE WITH THE EARTH, AND YOU GET FLASH BACK OF OTHER PRIMITIVES TIMES, THIS IS FOR YOU. THAT'S MY EXPERIENCE.

1 out of 5 stars Indian Welk.......2004-10-18

Although this may sound pleasant to some people I would imagine it's an insult to others. Just another example of the exploitation of the true Americans. It's like there was a Lawrance Welk of native American music only worse. An equivelant might be buying a Metallica cd and hearing Madonna music coming from the speakers. You expected something with some real spirit but you got watered down syrupy bubblegum music instead. It's not the real thing. Besides that I'm a professional drummer, and I'm definitly not impressed with the drumming. But having said that, if you just want some pop music to listen to and delude yourself that your listening to real native American music then this is for you.

It would probably be better to rename it and put a different picture on the cover that would be less insulting to the people it's making a mockery of and more suitable to the disco minded crowd it's apparently trying to foster.

1 out of 5 stars Sacred Spirit Drums.......2004-04-28

My husband is First Nation and has played on traditional Pow Wow drums. The music on this CD seems very contrived. I think it is better to get real First Nation drum music rather than to turn it into this unrecognizable, synthesized and distorted electronic sound. It is being "passed off" as Native. To me it it is not Native. It sounded, well, sorry, but, it sounded tacky. I don't know if Mr. Gordon is First Nation. Some of it even seems to be somewhat African, which would be appropriate if it where meant to be African in nature. But, all in all, it's far to "Hollywood" for me. And we all know how "Hollywood" has mis-informed the world about our First Nation's history. But, I guess the bottom line for the producers of this type of CD is - this stuff sells.
The drum is the heartbeat of Mother Earth. Her heart is not heard with this rendition.

4 out of 5 stars Like No One Else..........2005-01-31

...or almost no one else, Stew walks the line between kitsch and art, or between the sexy and the spiritual, or between dewy-eyed romance and cutting sarcasm. His work is entirely his own, even as the spit-and-polish arrangements of the group make their nods to late 60s/early 70s pop time and time again. The musician he reminds me most of in this regard is Marshall Crenshaw. Though their styles are not alike, both men have a genius for crafting songs that can have rough or delicate vibes without ever falling into either laughable mawkishness or boring machismo. Both make you feel you've heard their songs before, but they bring an undefineable "something" to the mix that is entirely unique and new. "The Constellation Jeeves" is one of those songs that smudges joy and sorrow together with seeming effortlessness. "lazy emergency" (one of the "hidden tracks," is almost British in its dry humor. These two tracks by themselves would make the disc worth owning for anyone who likes their pop music brainy, but not pretentious.

5 out of 5 stars Solid progression from last album.......2004-03-10

Stew continues on the path that started once "Naked Dutch Painter" made it's mark. One noticable difference is that Heidi's background vocals seem to fit in much smoother this time out. Maybe it's because she co-produced this album, or just because I'm getting used to hearing her more prominently in the tracks, either way, I feel this album is her vocal breakthrough. There is an absence, in my opinion, of a track which is a rabble-rouser like "Naked Dutch Painter." Certainly the "Statue Song" is a great 'tribute song' to a piece of art and the song whose title escapes me, which is about modern love and the varying expectations of the two sexes involved. The hidden track is also very good, but I feel that it disappoints on one level, when the song starts with that funky groove bass, I think that it's going to end the album with a punch, but it ends up being more of a shove than anything else, which isn't a complaint, it just doesn't go where I thought it would go. "Le Arteest Cafe" is a great number that I will constantly go back to and marvel at. Alas, I must go so that you can listen to to tracks and not have to read my review any longer. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars instantly begins growing.......2003-11-16

This is my first introduction to the music of Stew and I can honestly say I am hooked. This album, from first listen instantly begins to grow on you. I find myself listening to certain tracks over and over and gaining more insight after each listen. Personal favorites include the brilliant Statue Song, the melodic sadness of Way of Life and the masterpiece Kingdom of Drink. If amazing production, beautiful vocal arrangements and clever lyrics are your cup of tea then pick this album up - you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Clever.......2003-10-23

This album is my first introduction to the world of Stew, and I am definitely hooked. My taste in music varies widely, but I tend to go for faster, more electric sounds over all. "Something Deeper Than These Changes" is extremely mellow and accoustic, and I absolutely love it. The lyrics are incredibly clever, such as "Statue Song", and often endearingly sweet, as in "The Sun I Always Wanted". Back up vocalist and co-producer, Heidi, gives a wonderfully light contrast to Stew's rich, deep voice. This album's sound is somewhat simliar to John Cale and Leonard Cohen; however, I really hate to pin him to a particular sound or era. It's the kind of album that goes well with a long car drive in the rain.

Album Description

Doyle Lawson stands as one of the prime architects of modern bluegrass, with his career now spanning four decades. In addition to his achievements as an arranger, mandolin player, vocalist, and bandleader, Lawson is best known for infinitely widening the bluegrass gospel repertoire while ingeniously applying the rigorous precision of gospel harmony to secular songs. In the process, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver have been recognized with four consecutive Vocal Group of the Year awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association. For his Rounder Records debut, Lawson has assembled a stellar collection that highlights the continuing evolution of his unique vision. Joined by Jamie Dailey (guitar, vocals), Barry Scott (bass, vocals), Jesse Stockman (fiddle), and Terry Baucom (banjo, vocals), Lawson expertly weaves together elements of bluegrass, country, and gospel into a sound only definable as that of Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver.

If you have any affection for bluegrass you'll love this.

2 out of 5 stars Sorry ... Not One of DL&Q's best.......2005-08-09

I really enjoy Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, especially their gospel music. This is their first release for Rounder Records. I suspect the content and flow of this album represents a strong influence by the record company and not the usual freedom which Doyle Lawson has had in the past to pick the song lineup. Perhaps they were just trying to "break the mold" so to speak and stay away from heavy gospel content. I'm not sure where that came from, but to me it causes this release to come across as forced and mechanical rather than natural and flowing.

Don't get me wrong, the musicianship and especially the vocals are top notch, but for me this does not make up for the material selected for this release. Go back and listen to some of the soulful and sincere music from their previous releases and then compare it to this album.

I will be going back to listen to Rock My Soul and the older DL&Q material and You Gotta Dig a Little Deeper will probably be a very infrequent visitor in my CD player. If this is how DL&Q is going to be with Rounder, then in my opinion we would all have been better off without that relationship.

4 out of 5 stars Tight, upbeat bluegrass.......2005-05-29

Bluegrass legend surrounded by up-and-coming talents - check. Tight, multipart harmonies - check. Hot acoustic picking - check. To those who don't actively follow bluegrass, it's difficult to discern the differences between one top-notch band and another. What truly distinguishes Lawson's combo is the use of gospel quartet singing within the bluegrass framework. Though he and his accompanists can sing high-lonesome two-parts, it's the sustained chordal notes, such as the acapella tag to "Four Walls" that will send shivers down your spine.

Lawson's fine mandolin and guitar playing are displayed throughout, and having passed the banjo to rejoining bandmate Terry Baucom, the band strikes a balance that keeps the extraordinary vocals front and center. Highlights include the train-whistle lost-love harmonies of "Heartbreak Number Nine," the title-cut's whimsical, folksy style, and the album's sole instrumental, "Rosine" (which is sure to have them dancing at summer festivals!). It's all put together so smoothly, that casual listeners might not catch the incredible heart and craft laid into this recording.

5 out of 5 stars "Lawson weaves all the elements of bluegrass into his sound".......2005-04-27

Rounder Records presents their debut album with this label "You Gotta Dig a Little Deeper", featuring Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver...with Doyle Lawson on guitar/mandolin/vocals, Terry Baucom on banjo/vocals, Barry Scott on bass/vocals, Glen Duncan on fiddle, Jamie Dailey on guitar/rhythm guitar/vocals...a mixture of freshman and seniors (veterans) in the world of bluegrass...remincient of a barn dance with blends of tugging at your heartstrings...Lawson and his Quicksilver comrades deliver every note with a gospel edge to each tune they tackle.

Entire album is pure bluegrass from start to end...with the following tunes alphabetically and composer to boot:

BLUES FOR MY DARLING (Thomas Glenn Fletcher)
FOUR WALLS (Marvin Moore/George Campbell)
GIRL FROM WEST VIRGINIA (Clyde Denny/Marie Denny/Wade Hill)
GIRL IN THE VALLEY (Jamie Dailey)
HEARTBREAK NUMBER NINE (Barry Scott/Jamie Dailey)
LOVE ME AS YOU'D LOVE THE RAIN (Pete Goble/Leroy Drumm)
OAK VALLEY GIRL (Robert Gateley/Petr Vacek)
ROSINE (Doyle Lawson)
SAVING GRACE (Jerry Salley/Aaron Wilborn)
WHAT AIN'T TO BE, JUST MIGHT HAPPEN (Porter Wagoner)
WHEN I'M KNEE DEEP IN BLUEGRASS (Pete Goble)
YOU GOTTA DIG A LITTLE DEEPER (Carl H. Caldwell)

Pure vocalizing with high tenor harmony ringing in your ears...Lawson's mandolin solos are simply one of a kind, he is the best...one can only hope this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship between Rounder Records, Lawson and Quicksilver...Doyle Lawson played on Gibson "Lawson Signature Model" Mandolin, Terry Baucom played on Gibson "Terry Baucom Model" Banjo...they use D'Addarlo Strings exclusively...now this is the way bluegrass should sound...and O Brother this is just the way we like 'em!

4 out of 5 stars He's got his Dad's vocal style and his Mom's rhythm.......2006-10-24

When I put this CD on, the last name on the cover didn't jump out at me right away. Not sure why. Then the first words of young Taylor came out of my speakers and I knew his dad had to be James. Heck, even his uncle Livingston sounds like James. But Ben has a personality all his own, getting lots of the rhythm structure from his mom, Carly Simon.

Taylor wrote two of the five songs on this "EP". Only "Lady Magic" has the James Taylor feel while the other "Digest" has just enough "hip hop" rhythm to let you know it's the 21st Century, yet the stripped down acoustic arrangement gives it a relaxed feeling. I thought I'd had enough of Macy Gray's "I Try", Taylor gives it new life. (On the final track, "Glory Box". Taylor shares vocals with Meredith Sheldon, who actually sounds not unlike Gray).

The one song that I think fails is the standard "You Belong To Me". Though written in the 1930s that song belongs to The Duprees. It really seems out of place.

But, heck, this is a sampler, more or less, and has a list price of less than six bucks. It's a good introduction to the next generation of Taylors.

Album Description

Billboard Magazine kicked off 2004 with a cover story on re-emergence of the soul music movement, noting that new artists are makeing their presence felt.

Enter Pete Belasco with Deeper

Lush and seductive, Deeper plumbs the retro-feel of classic, sexy R&B grooves while staying contemporary.

Fans of Belasco are slavishly devoted to Get It Together, his 1997 debut album. Get It Together was described by Jazziz as "brilliant R&B, blues and jazz fusion" and by Hits as containing "slow R&B grooves (that) promise to seduce you into a bed not made since Marvin Gaye's 'Let's Get It On'."

Deeper has already sparked interest in the UK, where the album reach the #1 position on Jazz FM.

Pete Belasco's Deeper is poised to make its mark: sensual, silky music that just begs to lead the Soul Music movement.

4 out of 5 stars didn't reach potential of first CD.......2006-03-27

I was introduced to Belasco's music because I wrote music profiles for a marketing company for about a year, before I would write the review I would find their music on the internet and listen to a portion. I was very impressed by this man and still am with this one. I bought the first one which was hard to find in Texas, had to order online. this one didn't reach the potential of the first but was still great..hope he keeps up the great work

5 out of 5 stars good mix of jazz and slow jams.......2006-01-22

4 out of 5 stars A well-kept secret surprise & a very good cd!.......2005-10-23

I bought Belasco's "Deeper" on a whim, having never heard his music and based solely on a friend's recommendation. I like it a lot. Upon hearing the first track, I immediately thought of Curtis Mayfield, and then later read Belasco's liner notes where he credits Mayfield and the Isley Brothers; and their influences definitely come through in Belasco's music. He's effective as a vocal and instrumental soloist.

What I really liked about this cd is it's ability to "play well with others". When I want to shuffle 4-5 cds together, Belasco's "Deeper" mixes well with newer artists such as Joss Stone and Kem; or another mix with some old-school Ramsey Lewis and Roberta Flack. Also, Belasco's instrumental tracks nicely complemented other cds like Joyce Cooling and Walter Beasley.

Belasco's "Deeper" is like a fresh sound that you know you've heard before. And it's like hearing it again-- for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars I Am Not Alone.......2007-01-07

I bought this CD out of the "on sale" bin at the Christian book store, and so glad I did. Wow - I love it! So worth every dime and more! I love music that reminds me of the Lord's faithfulness... the music, but especially the lyrics, are so good. Natalie is extremely blessed with a beautiful God-given voice. She is full of passion when she sings. My husband and I both love this CD. Especially, "I Am Not Alone" and "I Desire". Actually, overall, I like all the songs. I've since bought two more of her CD's.

5 out of 5 stars Was looking for Christian music to inspire me.......2006-05-27

I found it! This cd is very inspiring, the lyrics are beautiful and the sound is wonderful. My biggest apprehension about Christian music was that the artists might not sound like the popular, secular music that I was used to. She sounds like Celine Dion, except Celine only sings about mushy love and Natalie's songs are deep and inspiring. I thank God for her talent and willingness to share it with the rest of us.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome Father/Daughter dance song.......2005-09-07

On this album, the song, "Always be your baby", is an incredible song for fathers/daughters. It is especially appropos to those of us getting married at a later age (or a second marriage). Prepare yourself for a good tear jerker, though, if you have a close relationship with your Dad. This one song makes the whole album worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars Natalie Grant- Deeper Life.......2005-05-18

Anyone who is spiritual or just likes to listen to a great vocalist will love the Natalie Grant CD. She's an amazing singer with great faith insight and depth. I'm a big Christian Music fan and she is my favorite artist. Not your typical gospel music but a great pick-up to my day. Youth and adults alike will enjoy this CD. My personal favorite is Days like this (track 2). The lyrics send a powerful message that is positive and a great relief from the negativity of the world. Besides, the way she switches her style to accommodate all types of listners is magnificent.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album! .......2004-09-06

If there were 10 stars, this album would be one of them! Great songs! A few are more energetic and a couple are more mellow. I would definately give this album 2 THUMBS UP!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Deeper Blue .......2006-09-16

One of my very favorite memories is a trip I took to Hawaii several years ago. With the very first note of DEEPER BLUE I was instantly transported back to the white sands and gently breaking waves, sipping fresh pineapple juice; without a care in the world. With this exquisite CD, Kohala (pronounced Ko-hall-ah) is able to transport listeners to an auditory world that is pure and natural in its beauty. Influences of folk, jazz and life in Hawaii continue to serve as the foundation and musical inspiration on this seventh release by the guitar trio whose members include Charles Michael Brotman, (who, in 2005, won the first Grammy Award given for Hawaiian music - Best Hawaiian Music Album) handling the melody on nylon string classical guitar; Charlie Recaido; and newest addition, Rupert Tripp, on steel strings. The title track is sublime - a gorgeous melody and dazzling guitar work make this one of the album's standout cuts. "Samba del Sol" follows and once again we are treated to impressive finger work in a delightful piece of music. With some lively percussion added to the mix, "Lime Twist" is another favorite. It's breezy and lighthearted and guaranteed to make you feel good all over. "The Wish" showcases the beauty of simplicity, highlighting the radiance of "less is more." Like the pristine beaches of the Hawaiian Pacific itself, DEEPER BLUE sparkles, charms and casts an unwavering spell that you'll never want to break free of. ~ BETH LEWIS

The title song of Paul Kelly's brilliant Deeper Water begins with a childhood memory of being carried in his father's strong arms above the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean. A folkish, nostalgic arpeggio is played on an electric guitar as the verse gives way to the hymn-like chorus, "Deeper water, deeper water, calling him on." To this point, the song has the well-crafted, country-folk feel of a John Hiatt family number, but then it falls apart. The pretty folk arrangement is overtaken by a disorienting, Lou Reed-ish guitar riff as if the singer had dropped into a bottomless sea, and Kelly describes the analogous experience of falling in love with a woman only to watch her waste away from disease. He sings the fetching melody of the chorus in the same deadpan tone, but now it has a very different connotation. It would seem nearly impossible to capture the tuneful domesticity of Hiatt's work and the droning nightmares of Reed's on the same album--much less the same song--but Australia's Paul Kelly is an extraordinary songwriter and singer. Kelly has had a few hits and exerts lots of influence at home in the antipodes, but he's little more than a rumor in North America, despite releasing six of his 11 albums here, of which this is among the best. He foregoes the obvious gestures of pop music for insinuating rhythms and unassuming melodies which sneak up on the listener and slowly but surely seep in. This understated approach fits his lyrics, which are too aware of the paradoxes and gray areas of adult relationships to deliver simple answers to familiar questions. The album, recorded in Melbourne with Kelly's current Australian band, is full of hints at anger, lust, giddiness and sadness lurking behind the low-key craft of Kelly's rootsy bar-band music. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Thanks to a friend.......2005-01-21

While working in Los Angles a fellow employee asked if anyone wanted to go to a concert with him. The performer was someone I never heard of, but I thought it would be interesting. Is was much more than interesting, it was entertaining. I think you could mention Paul Kelly in a music store and get no reaction, he is really undiscovered in North America. I am online now having listened to this album (and his Words and Music, Deeper Water is the better of the two) nearly to death, too buy a couple more of Kelly's cd's. If you haven't listened to Paul Kelly, it's all in the songwriting, his tells stories, it is varied, and as mentioned before, entertaining

5 out of 5 stars An Adult Rocker .......2004-10-10

Deeper Water is another fine album from one of Australia's best exports, Paul Kelly. What I like about Kelly is the way in every CD he rocks, and is never reluctant to show both adult anger and tenderness. Deeper Water is no exception, from the aural seduction of Blush, to the (auto?)biography of wonder, love, and tragedy in the title song, to a love song to his little girl (Madeleine's Song). The Amazon reviewer is right to invoke John Hiatt and Lou Reed; you could also throw Dave Alvin into the mix of people whose good company Kelly keeps. Anastasia Changes Her Mind is a classic -- she leaves, lipstick traces on the bathroom mirror, the only goodbye and suddenly -- kissing that legacy for luck -- he can do no wrong at the racetrack. She comes back, wipes off the old farewell, and the gambling luck is gone. Yes, "it's hard, it's hard, when Anastasia changes her mind." Either way.

Lots of variety and not a bad track in the bunch. Go for it.

5 out of 5 stars A voice from Venus................2004-05-02

His voice is soulful with a spritz of laughter..... His lyrics are movies of the week....His crying and whining are true and sad....His humor rocks the halls of Heaven....His stories are the under current of real life......He's a cowboy with a drama queen sulking in the distance.....The melodies and the music flow with rivers full and fresh.....His talent and understanding of the human situation are intense and tender.....There is no mistaking the beat in this man's heart.....His libido is healthy, his heart on his sleeve.....Men listen to him; Women drool......Angels walk before him just to pave the way..... Forget Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.....Paul's cds will cure all of that, and more.....Buy this CD.....Give yourself something worth having......Thanks again, Paul...what would we do without you?

4 out of 5 stars Bigger than a Cadillac.......2003-03-29

"Deeper Water" recently surfaced for me. There are three exceptional tracks. The opener "Blush" has a great expansive vocal on the addictive chorus, sounding like an Australian Eagles track with a driving beat, "All I want, I confess, I just want to see her blush, all across her chest, take off her cotton dress." The title track also rocks with a vengence and has a great life cycle theme from young boy, to young man, to aging man, "Well the years hurry by & the woman loves the man, then one night in the dark she grabs hold of his hand, says, "There, can you feel it kicking inside!" "Give In To My Love," is a great pop confection with drving lead guitar & some obvious double entendre, "I want to show you my love; it's bigger than a Cadillac, but you keep up your resistance & you drive me back; I want to show you all my love; it's bigger than a Cadillac." Other tracks on the CD are consistently good. Notably, the bounce of "Extra Mile," the sense of surprise & betrayal on "I'll Forgive But I Won't Forget," the South African mbaqanga on "Madeleine's Song," the blues-inflected guitar on "Difficult Woman"; and the dreamy drench of sound on "California." "Deeper Water" is a good set with some classic tracks that still sounds fresh. I hope this one washes up on your beach! Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars A darker and harder edged album, but lacking adventure.......2002-03-23

Deeper Water is the second album of new material from Paul Kelly post Messengers (PK's former band). It is a darker work than it's predecessor, Wanted Man. Musically it has a harder rock edge, as demonstrated by the excellent opening track Blush and the infectious lead single Give In To My Love. Lyrically it continues the move away from the parochial concerns and settings of earlier work to focus on more universalised themes of love and growing up. This is Kelly looking beyond his homeland of Australia, as evidenced in the wonderfully longing California.

This is an album about relationships and what it is to be human. That this is a darker work than its predecessor is immediately signified by the dominant use of black on the cover (as opposed to the previous album's largely white look). This is carried on by the B&W pictures of water in the sleeve, hinting at deep currents and metaphorically referencing the dark, unpredictable, emotional nature of the characters who populate the songs within. Of course this also points to the key song on the album, the title track, with its story of growing up and the experiences, both of pleasure and of pain, that make up life. This song, and the dedication of the album to The Messengers late guitarist, signal the ever present notion of death. Concurrently, the title track speaks of birth and new life and the wonder of youth, as does Madeleine's Song (about Kelly's young daughter).

While it is true that there is less humour and musical diversity on this record than on some of Kelly's other work, it is still a strong collection of songs, and are as insightful of the human condition as ever. Although it is not his best album, everything Kelly does is above average. And this is worth owning simply for the wonderful Anastasia Changes Her Mind - a song I once saw Paul give a brilliant impromptu performance of at a Writer's Week talk in Adelaide, South Australia.

3 out of 5 stars Eh?.......2007-06-25

I am a blues musician and a PURIST which means that my idea of the blues is a tad old-fashioned. You baby boomer blues fanatics and musicians know what I mean. Bruce Katz is very gifted but young and he is adulterating the real blues into something else. He does what all the younger "blues" musicians are doing now-bastardizing it with jazz inflections. I flinched every time he would get jazzy. Jazz and blues are two entirely different genres. That is controversial but simply what I believe. I thought that this CD would be pure blues but it's not. Too bad....he is really talented. He needs to leave the old time REAL blues alone and just do the new age jazz instead of mixing it up and advertising this CD as a blues CD.
