Following their success with 2005's George Is On, house duo Deep Dish (known individually as Sharam and Dubfire) set out to divide and conquer with individual mixes for UK label Global Underground. Sharam strikes first--and hard--with Dubai, a two-disc set that is likely to generate comparisons with GU's other epic releases such as Sasha's Ibiza (GU13). Disc one is the slow-burner here: Spider and Legaz's dub of "Look Around" funks things up with a vocoder-drenched synth line that could have been pulled off a Jeff Beck album before giving way to the druggy, cascading echoes of 16 Bit Lolitas' "Passing Lights." From the perspective of the second disc, the moody expanse of the first begins to look a lot like an elaborate launch sequence, as the infectious "Timewarp" merges into Cedric Gervais's "Spirit in My Life," which sends the whole business into orbit. Sharam has undoubtedly reached a new high here, with programming so organic it sometimes seems like the track list may have just dropped out of the sky. For those awaiting the next big Global Underground release, your time has come. --Brent Kallmer

Sharam killing it in Dubai.......2007-06-15
ok so yes gu kills it and we all know deep dish are gods in ther own right but Sharam sets it off on these disks
steady groves seamless mixes another gu classic
A little slightly less than limited this year, but a still great mix!.......2007-01-25
I don't mean it has less production than other limited releases, I just meant it's a little short on bonus features in that long book. It's the same fold out book format as the previous two GU's and it's also filled with location photography like the the others. The one thing the other two had were interviews and bios about some of the residents of Miami and Shanghai. They weren't the most interesting of features, but at least it was more than just the annoying Dom Phillips sleeve notes. It's just the notes and the photos. If GU hasn't used a better writer than Dom after 29 releases, I don't think we'll ever get that benefit.
Now, onto the mixes:
After two stunning GU's in '05 from Danny Howells and Nick Warren, we had to wait until late 2006 to get the only release of the year from their prolific GU series, #29 by half of the Deep Dish duo, Sharam. It's less progressive than Warren's and more upbeat than Howells, so it's more like a danceable Miami. If you liked Miami, but wanted some faster paced house, this is it.
There are a lot of vocals on both discs, but they are all good tracks, especially the one to open disc 1, a stunning remix by Nicka & Asle of the Julie Dennis voiced Sugar (Sweet Thing). It's a killer track to start the mix, although I wasn't keen on the choice to start disc 2, an old school house tune that just didn't cut it for me. Aside from that opening track on disc 2, and where he lets the Deep Dish remix of Paul Van Dyk's The Other Side play a little too long on disc 1, I thought both discs were great. I liked disc 2 slightly better, only because of the incredible line-up of tracks making up the latter portion of the mix (tracks 8-14).
You've got great vocals, chunky house tunes, thumping dance floor beats, some guitars and cellos thrown in for good measure, all adding up to a fine release for the GU series. I actually liked Dubfire's Toronto Afterclub mix a tad better than Sharam's, but I think he is going to have his work cut out for him when he tries to top this with his own solo GU mix due out this year. Also due out in February is Nick Warren's GU30, and Adam Freeland is set to do GU32, after Dubfire's 31. I don't know if all 3 will be released in 2007, but at least two should be, which is at least one more than '06!
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G !!!!!!!.......2006-12-26
One of the best sets I've ever heard... very progressive, very modern, very deep dish...
Excellent !.......2006-12-02
This is a fantastic collection of tunes! Energetic yet smooth, never irritating. Buy it before your cross-country drive & you won't be disappointed.
Dubai meets Toronto - BUY IT.......2006-11-30
It is definitely one of the best electronic music CDs in the last few years. If you liked the Global Undergroud: Toronto masterpiece, you love this one too! Great mixing, top selection and it flows perfectly from the beginning to the end. Sharam is no doubt one of the best DJ's around. I am thankful he's coming back to Brazilian carnival next year! Deep Dish rules.

Tenaglia, the DJ's DJ, has always smashed down dance music's divisions by mixing whatever he pleases without losing a smidgeon of musical impact. So it's no surprise that Global Underground: London, a double CD mixed live in London isn't a fusty, dusty artifact full of novelty tracks. Forever passionate about the music as well as his mixing, Tenaglia's choices are inspired by what really works on the dance floor. Peace's Divison's "Tribal Funk" is wonderfully voracious, and ATFC's "In and Out of My Life" sits just on the right side of screaming-diva house. By concentrating on subbed-out electro house in all its sweeping orchestral glory, London rocks and soothes in equal measure. There are plenty of blueprints and uplifting twists, such as Minimal Funk IV's epic "Definition of House" and Vegas Soul's teasingly groove-oriented "Junk Funk," but that's not all. Tenaglia has split the CDs so each one leans toward either house or trance, each never to the detriment of the other. So for the most part, the second CD is a sexy, blissfully escapist soundtrack, and the first is super-funky house above all else. If you own other Tenaglia compilations, then you already know what his mixes sound like--taut bass lines, musical beats with a soulful edge, and plenty of extended, glorious breakdowns. If you don't, then this anthemic and occasionally ethereal mix will be both banging and astonishing. --Maxine Kabuubi

I would't go there if I were you..........2001-02-16
Maybe Danny didn't have the copyrights to spin real records on this album, I don't know, but it's just background music. The first half starts out alright, sounding vaguely tropical and new-yorican, lifting a style from NY Club Body and Soul. And there are some clever samples...but they never go anywhere. If you want vocals, there are NONE except a bad remix of Keep in Touch Body-to-Body. I happen to like vocal-less techno house, but this doesn't cut it. The second CD is much worse. This is soulless Danny being heavily marketed to new-school clubbies tweaking under headphones with no history to ground them.
untouchable!.......2001-01-19
true brilliance!!! An essential cd for newbies and vets alike. It plays like liquid molasses; deep, thick, sexy. tennaglia once again displays why he is the US' top dj( I just wish he would make a san francisco apperaence). All fans of dance need to add this set to their collection.
As good or better than Athens.......2000-12-27
Danny Tenaglia does it again with this mixCD brought to us by the people at Global Underground/Boxed. It's, well, it's good stuff. Like Athens, Tenaglia is essentially bringing much more of a tribal/deep house sound to a series dominated by trance, but it's oh-so-very appropriate. After all, if it's all about the music, well it'll be tough to find better music than this.
Disc one works the tribal/deep house sound much more so than the second disc. Heavy on the percussion, this disc works a vibe that brings to mind drum circles under open stars just as much as it does circles of dancers under strobe lights. Overall, there's this ethereal yet sinister quality that gets built up over the course of the CD. Musically, it experiences its first (mind you, FIRST) peak with Onephatdeeva's "In and Out of My Life" --- but thematically, the mix takes it's first sharp upward turn at Coco Da Silva's "Suadade" with the first appearance of the "enchantment" sample.
Disc two continues the deep/tribal sound, but also has more trancey elements to it. The percussive elements riding over top of the underlying cadence of the kickdrum never quite cease, but the fade a bit as the music becomes a little less percussive and a little more melodic. Fortunately, Tenaglia's signature sound is maintained throughout -- that dark, sinister, yet extremely sexy undercurrent. Yes. Oh, yes.
So, do yourself a favor and pick this up. Then, do yourself the favor of reading the liner notes. Most excellent.
Just listen - it's delectable.......2000-11-08
I won't be going ga-ga over all the various tunes and this and that. If you like your house groovy, deep, sexy and different, do yourself a favor: listen to this CD. The first disc is one of the best mixed CDs I have ever heard, and his choice is impeccable. It builds in such a subtle fashion that you will find yourself wondering how you got to point B from point A. A sexy, sinuous mix that sneaks up on you, surprises you and makes you wonder what's coming next. And the 2nd disc? I can't say - I can't stop listening to the first one.
tribal heaven.......2000-10-21
I've heard some of Danny's records, and I've heard him live a couple of times, but I've never (for reasons I can't seem to figure out) bought one of his cd's or mixtapes. After listening to the first few minutes of this double cd set, I'm starting to feel like an idiot for denying myself for so long. I'm a huge fan of tribal house, and I even venture into a little disco house now and then. This album is ecxactly what I like to hear. I thought that Doc Martin's "United DJ's of America" disc was the be-all and end-all of house music, but Danny Tenaglia's latest installment of the "Global Underground" series is giving the doctor a run for his money.
