On his second "solo" album, this stand-up comic and character actor proves himself to be not just a foul-mouthed everyman and an unrepentant geek, but a rather awesome wordsmith as well. Patton has been a stand-up comedian for almost twenty years and this is his second CD. Lazy...or maybe busy. He's appeared in over twenty movies, including "Magnolia", "Reno 911!: Miami", and the documentary "The Comedians Of Comedy", which he also created and produced. He played Spence on "The King Of Queens" for nine seasons, is a regular on "Reno 911!", a frequent guest on Conan and Jimmy Kimmel, and a recurring voice actor on "Kim Possible", "SpongeBob SquarePants", "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", and "Crank Yankers". He's a regular columnist in the NY Times Magazine and was an uncredited writer on the "Borat" movie. He's also the lead voice in this summer's Pixar movie, "Ratatouille", playing a rat named Remy. This is his first CD on Sub Pop and it includes a DVD with one hour of stand-up.

Brilliant. That's all I can say. I don't want to even talk about the content because I would not want to spoil a single moment if you haven't heard it yet. It's great. If you love Patton's work, you will love the cd/dvd. Buy this instead of wasting your time watching "Last Comic Standing".
And if you ever get a chance, check out Patton live or check out a Comedians of Comedy tour. Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Zach G., Eugene Mirman, Morgan Murphy, Eddie Pepitone are the best comedians working today and also some of the most gracious people you will ever meet. Buy this cd now!

Interested in Native American musical tradition, and disappointed with the culture's contemporary bands, guitarist Duane Denison decided to research the people's history. Eventually, he found a number of relevant books that were published in the early 20th century. In these, Denison found what he was looking for; song transcriptions of traditional Native American music that was dark and challenging.

The album's title, Anonymous, stems from all of the unnamed people who have contributed to these songs through their history. The names of these individuals go undiscovered. The core trio that make up the band, however, are anything but unknown. Each member brings a solid recording history to the project. Mike Patton has fronted Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, Peeping Tom, and a number of other critically acclaimed acts. Duane Denison handled guitar for The Jesus Lizzard and currently plays with Ministry's Paul Barker in U.S.S. A. John Stainer was the drummer in Helmet's first incarnation and is now earning applause with Battles.

Each of these artists' unique talents are combined to make this album the success that it is. Patton is the perfect vocalist for this project. His signature voice work is all here; screams, scats, growls, raps, and croons spill out over the release. Lyrically, very little of this album is in English. Most of the songs consist of Patton chanting rhythmically in what are, presumably, different tribal dialects. Denison, in addition to driving the record's concept, adds a guitar that amplifies its sound. He shows off his versatility as he moves from a sludgy crawl to a melodic hook effortlessly. Meanwhile, Stainer's well-executed tribal beats pound, clap, and roll their way through. In addition, a number of other instruments slip in and out of the fold. The result is an album that moves from segments that are sinisterly hollow to segments that are densely layered.

Fans of Tomahawks first two albums may be caught off guard. Tomahawk has moved a long way from their previous efforts to release an album that is considerably more difficult and experimental. For the most part, straightforward guitar riffs and catchy vocals of old have been replaced by a far less common song style. Denison's vision underlines every moment of Anonymous. While there are a few brief moments where the idea sounds drained, the group keeps things fresh, overall, by continually introducing new subtleties. Every second of this album was thought-out and prepared.

One of the most impressive parts of this entire outing was how Tomahawk made this music without ever encroaching on Native American culture. Throughout the release, the band is respectful to their sources without abandoning their own aesthetic. This is not a New Age influenced Putumayo Records compilation. It is dark, loud, aggressive, and still surprisingly authentic. It is a skilled fusion of cultures.

Simply put, I was unprepared for how extraordinary this album would be.

This is a good collection of good music. Despite whatever anyone might say about the members of the group performing the songs, they are performed increadibly well. Forget your expectations, forget about pop music, and forget about all that other stupid crap you're thinking about. Just listen and enjoy. For fruck's sake.

Duane Denison is my favorite guitar player. his tonality, style, and talent continue to impress me. this album is about as experimental as i've heard him, which is very cool.
Mike Patton is my favorite vocalist/musician. i'm constantly having my mind tore open by his works. i like about 90% of his projects. following his career so long kind of molds you into an avid listener. his projects are a sort of timeline in the way that each release makes sense in the overall scope of his career. huh?! ok, what i'm getting at is that this is different. different and surprising. unexpected. not that i claim to forsee anything but when a new disc comes out, you're like "oh, okay. the next step". this one's kinda out of order or something, even with the concept's back story.
where's the review? i like this disc a lot. just like about every other cd some songs jump out at you and others grow on you. the premise is way cooler than i could've imagined, but i'm glad we all had a heads up on it. on some tracks, i kinda wish the blips and bloops were eliminated, it sometime distracts from the "authenticity" (not that i'm an authority on the whole native american thing).
John Stanier. why no one ever mentions him, i don't understand. on the other Tomahawk releases i feel he was mixed too low. this one's quite a bit better and he sounds like he's having a blast! i think he sounds more inspired than anyone else (which says a lot). Mike Patton does and always sing(s) with tons of conviction, which with the chanting stuff is pretty impressive, not being a native. and Duane Denison came up with the plan so of course he's feeling it, but John Stanier really pulls the tribal thing off! i'm used to his crazy tight snare stuff from Helmet, but this really shows his versatility.
bottom line, listen with an open mind. there's a lot more good on this album than weird (and most of the weird is good,too). it's funny that if you try and grow with musicians, you're a slobbering worshipper. if you cling to past albums, you have a closed mind. yes faith no more was cool. mr. bungle. the jesus lizard. helmet. now these folks are putting themselves on the line. i don't think they just throw anything out there knowing it will sell. major to indie. stadiums to bars. indie bands play to eat. buy the cd. see them live. if you like the music - buy it, if you don't - sell it and buy something else. everybody wins.
how can anyone review anything? i think this would work better if people asked questions and everyone answered them. does Patton sing? how long is the disc? is it boring?, etc.

More than a little disappointed.......2007-06-26

I know what I'm getting into with most Ipecac releases and Patton related performances in particular. The latest Tomahawk album for all my expectation was something completely different than its predecessors, which is not necessarily a bad thing in itself. However when I buy a Tomahawk album, I purchase it for the rock-like sensibilities of these veterans. I can certainly appreciate the concept of this album, however it's such a departure from the terrain of the first two, which I enjoyed tremendously, that I am left feeling a little duped.

Without launching into a Patton love letter like some, I will admit I am a pretty solid fan of the guy's work. Although I am admittedly left feeling after this latest effort like the band, surprisingly early in it's recorded tenure, have already begun to venture to a place that I am not interested in going. I don't mind something listening to something different, a little more free form, avant garde even. But this has never been one of the reasons I listened to Tomahawk. The band's last album, "Mit Gas" sounded like a group who was finally gelling, getting comfortable and exploring some gutsy rock grooves with Patton's trademark charismatic vocals. This came hot on the heels of the creative, yet raw, energetic sounding debut "Tomahawk". While listening to this latest album I actually thought some of the moments sound a little cringe-worthy which is mostly attributed to Patton's, almost silly at times, vocals.

The concept, as I mentioned before, is itself interesting. The core of my letdown is that I just didn't get what I was looking for on this one.

Mr. Oswalt is a great story teller, mimic and funny man. For me not all of his stuff is ha ha funny. But I really enjoy just listening to him. He is very intellegent, on point and amusing.

Taboo subjects aren't cutting it in comedy any more. They're slowly being eroded away by overuse and mere shock value. What truly shocks us any more? While Patton Oswalt deals with a number of taboos, he does it with an incomparable imagination and a faculty of language. This is what comedy needs in order to evolve.

I bought this CD, returned it because it skipped like crazy, replaced it with a new one and it skips like crazy. That's why I'll only give it 4 stars.

This CD is the worst "comedy" CD I have ever heard. Yet the reviews on here mostly claim it was hilarious????

Ok, I've come to the conclusion, the only people writing positive reviews on Amazon MUST be the people trying to sell the junk.

I've seen this guy on some tv shows, and on comedy central, and he's a somewhat funny guy, but it is painful to listen to this CD. You can feel the awkwardness of the crowd, not knowing if or when to laugh. And it continues throughout the entire CD. There don't seem to be any jokes on the CD at all. It is all disconnected negative rants from a bitter angry human being.

Don't believe me? Then go ahead and waste your money on this horrible piece of junk, and see for yourself.

Like my review title says, Do NOT read the positive reviews. Just read the negative ones, and decide how credible they seem. Then make your decision to buy or not buy.

If you already know you like Patton get "222".......2006-04-27

"222" is the 2-disc uncut version of this standup set. Its a full 2-discs, but it is non-stop funny. If you know that you like Patton's standup (from watching Comedians of Comedy, or his Comedy Central special) save yourself the trouble and get 222. Its only sold through a smaller site (or at indy record stores, apparently) you can find that if you go to Patton's website.

So, really, there's no reason that you shouldn't buy this CD, but if you want the "full" Patton Oswalt experience, hunt down a copy of 222 while you still can!

This CD is so funny, you'll have to change your pants at least twice before it's over. It gets better and better as it goes on, too. God bless Patton...Anybody who can work Fudgie the Whale into a stand-up bit deserves the bronze star of comedy. Buy this CD. Now!!

The collaboration between director Franklin J. Schaffner and composer Jerry Goldsmith produced several fantastic films and scores, but none have been more memorable than 1970's Patton. Goldsmith's grandiosely constructed marches and echoing trumpets express both the essence of the complex general as well as Schaffner's visual imagery. These trumpets find their way into nearly every part of the film's score, lending an aura of timelessness and invincibility to the conflicts that lay ahead. Even in "The Cemetery," they float beneath the heavy drums and light piccolos as testament to the sacrifice and memorial of death in combat. The score to Tora! Tora! Tora! embodies the invasion of Pearl Harbor as Goldsmith brings the sounds of the Japanese koto and wood blocks under the structure of a full Western symphony. Opposing instruments build up separately from one another as the fighting forces come closer to battle then blend at the climax of engagement. Although this is a music soundtrack, the original audio tape version had the speeches on it (which I loved). Well that tape is quite old and I would like to have those speeches and music on CD now. The music is awesome. But the speech in the beginning of the original soundtrack set the mood for the music. The end speech was a great way to end the music (as it did the film). They had it right the first time. Too bad they had to change a good thing. I hope the powers that be release a new version with the speeches. Till then, I'll hold off on buying it.

Patton: A Great American Classic.......2006-03-29

There are a LOT of recordings out on the market that contain some or all of Jerry Goldsmith's Patton score.

The sound quality and content of this recording is very good. Tora! Tora! Tora! is an un-necessary but nice bonus.

I love the George C. Scott speech, but I am fine with getting that in the movie. This CD got me the haunting, hair-tingling melody that the movie burned onto my brain many years ago-it is all I need...I would just buy the movie for the complete score and speech if I want it later.

Overall, I am happy with the quality and value of this recording and would recommend it for moderate fans. For the Die-Hard fans, check out "Patton [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] [SOUNDTRACK]" which is also for sale on Amazon.com. It looks like it is more of a collector's type item.

Great Music, poor transfer.......2005-03-07

There is something awe-inspiring in Jerry Goldsmith's score for Patton. The solo trumpet that heralds a triumphant march that is easily one of the most perfect for a film about World War II. Glodsmith was able to write music that captured Patton's personality and along with George C Scott's performance, Patton is close to perfect. As a bonus, there are some tracks from the Goldsmith film Tora!Tora!Tora! This cd only gets 4 stars because the transfer is very poor. I hope that a proper transfer is made to honor Mr. Goldsmith's musical legacy.

You get the feeling Mike Patton did his time with major label bands like Faith No More and Mr. Bungle merely as a way to fund the stuff he's really into. He's got a solo project called Peeping Tom that includes collaborations with Massive Attack and Amon Tobin; the fourth album from his experimental instrumental outfit, Fantomas; and guest spots on Björk's Medulla and Handsome Boy Modeling School's White People. At the front of the pack is this collaboration with Oakland, California turntable crew the X-ecutioners. Using the group's punctuated scratches and samples as raw material, Patton builds a symphony of cut-and-paste chaos over which he applies his trademark shrieks and growls. It's clearly not for everyone, but those who found Jay-Z and Linkin Park's Collision Course a little too sterile will definitely find something to gape over. -- Aidin Vaziri

I'm a big fan of Mike Patton and I must say this has to be one of my favorite projects, the whole CD is fantastic from beginning to end, very playable. Particularly "Fire in the Hole" "Loser On Line" and "!VAQUEROS Y INDIOS!" Makes you want get up, dance, salute, fire some heavy machinery. The strange sampling and unique lyrics will be more than enough to appeal to people who may not be normally into hip-hop, and the killer beats will win over more traditional hip hop aficionados.

Great Album! Amazing Rythms!.......2007-05-17

Although not so many people appreciates Mike Patton's ability to create music, this album helps him to vindicate his musical and creative genius.
Full of different rythms, from weird sounds to hilarious dialogs, this is a fresh, non-convencional and easy to listen material. I'm glad I bought it.

His style of music combined with the hip-hop beats and sounds really makes for an interesting album,with some funny fresh surprises.Definately worth buying!

Jumping JeBus!!.......2006-05-26

This album clearly illustrates to unafflicted-world what it feels like to have ADD. Unfortunately I was diagnosed with it, but I feel right at home every time I pop this cd in. "Fire in the Hole" is one of the coolest songs to come out in 2005. This cd sounds like you threw the first Fantomas album, and select tracks from Beastie Boys "Check Your Head" into a blender, pressed puree, fed it to Patton, then made him puke it up onto a turntable and start spinnin' out some tracks. I highly recommend this one!

I Love Mike's work with the Executioner's, "Get up Punk 0200 Hrs." is great example of a classic Patton style meeting Hip-Hop.

I haven't had time to listen carefully through all five CD's yet but they're very interesting examples of early blue recordings and I'm glad I have them.

WHAT ONE SHOULD BE PAYING..........2005-12-27

An earier reviewer was whining about JSP records not paying royalties. Who does this chump think the royalties would be paid to ??? Charley Patton is long dead so quit your carping about the copyright owners not getting their fair share. These SOB's are making money anyway. Besides its about the music.

What seems too good to be true usually is; the complete output of Charlie Patton -- dozens of $1,000+ original records all compiled here for under $30? Only one word comes to mind: piracy.

These are some of the most important recordings ever made, and I certainly have no beef with that. But the buyer should know that most or all of these tracks are lifted from other reissues, in the typical JSP tradition! It's a little like buying stolen merchandise.

If you can get around that, the set is a bargain.

Good price; fair sound; borrowed sources?.......2005-03-02

There are both good and bad things about this set. The 5 discs of very rare and valuable material make up a rather incredible compilation. The layout of the inserts is somewhat user-friendly; requiring the listener to pull individual CDs out in order to locate artists. The discography information does not include song titles, which causes a lot of back-and-forth cross-reading. A little confusing.

The sound quality is only fair; when I compare these to Yazoo reissues, I feel like there is no presence in the JSP versions. Too much treble has been rolled off.

My biggest concern is that I believe I recognize many of these remastered sides from other reissues. A little 'tweaking' to try and hide their origin doesn't do the trick. Is this just a 5 CD set of bootlegs? This bothers me for the original engineers who found the recordings and did all the work, just to have it lifted and reissued at a cheaper price by another company.

Essential almost begins to describe it.......2004-11-29

With this review I am officially retracting my Catfish Records Patton box review of a few years ago. I must have escaped my mind somehow back then, because in the past couple years I haven't even been able to listen to the couple Catfish boxes I purchased back then. Skip them, both for the sound as well as for the occasional missed sides and edited snips of tunes that exist in whole elsewhere.

Now for the music itself... as far as I am concerned, Charley Patton gave the world one of the best musical bodies of work ever produced by an American. "Delta Blues" does not even begin to contain him. Charley Patton IS a genre. He created it. He perfected it.

Let's not forget all the other worthwhile musical nuggets here, though. Louise Johnson, the Delta Big Four, Willie Brown, etc... are very good as well. Louise will certainly never win any awards for creative lyrics, considering that 3 of her 5 sides begin with a standard blues lyric..."woke up this morning, had the blues all 'round my bed", but her delivery and piano playing more than make up for it. Who wouldn't have wanted to get trashed in a juke joint while she spanks the piano and belts 'em out?? As for the Delta Big Four, if you've not heard them before, you will probably enjoy their versions of tunes you already know. The Big Four's style is lined-out music, but delivered in a tame manner. It's not the large, polyphonic, drawn-out praise-crying of actual lined-out hymnody. Good stuff, though! It's really too bad Willie Brown was not recorded more often. In fact, it's downright pathetic that he only recorded a couple sides, while an annoying hack like Sonny Terry recorded tons of sides.

Son House's Paramounts are here also, if you have not yet upgraded from your old Document discs. JSP has now re-released Son's sides twice, as he is also on the excellent Legends of Country Blues box (the complete pre-war sides of Skip James, Son House, Tommy Johnson, Bukka White, & Ishman Bracey).

My one minor gripe about this box is that the other artists sides are mixed in with Charley's. Maybe it's just me, but often times when I'm in a Patton mood, he is all I want. 70+ straight minutes of uninterrupted slurring and rhythmic invention. It's tough to ever get that on this set though, considering Disc D, for instance. The first two tracks are Patton, and the rest is other people. Kind of a drag since Bird Nest Bound is one of my favorite Patton performances. Having said that, I still cherish this box. It's the best sounding Patton sides I've had, and I could actually afford it.

5-star music, but I give the box 4 stars for breaking up Patton's sides. An essential purchase nonetheless. Oh one more thing, I'm not convinced that JSP just grabs other releases, tweaks them a bit, and then re-releases them. When I asked them if a complete pre-war Lonnie Johnson box is in the "coming soon" category, I was told that they would like to do him, but that his sides are difficult to get a hold of and a project like him takes a long time to get ready. If all JSP does is tweak previous cd releases, they could just go out and buy the Lonnie Johnson discs on Document and re-release them.

Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Charlie Patton and the History of the Blues.......2007-05-26

Charlie Patton was one of the great early blues legends, along with others such as Son House. His recordings were of low quality, with a lot of noise that obscured his artistry, as I understand it. This CD, remastered by Yazoo, still has noise, but the voice and instrumental playing emerges, for the most part, cleanly, revealing the artistry of Patton.

The liner notes summarize his importance (page 2): "Charlie Patton (1891-1934) was the most powerful blues recording artist of all time, as well as the most subtle. He was, and remains, a figure of immense significance in blues history." The first sentence may be a bit of hyperbole, but the CD does show us why he is so important. His guitar playing is cleanly done; he provides some of his own rhythm by foot stomping and guitar slapping; his voice is a great blues voice, ranging from softly sung songs to great "exuberation." He established a series of themes, which he would use as the basis for many songs after he began recording, by 1910.

Some illustrative cuts:

"Down the Dirt Road" is a nice example of Patton creating his own percussion effects by foot stomping and guitar tapping. His raw voice does well by the blues song here. This is one of his three best-known themes.

"High Water Everywhere" focuses on a flood in the late 1920s. What a raw powerful voice, as he nearly shouts out the tune at times. The guitar playing is rather simple, but effective. There are some nice backing vocals and the song is taken at a sprightly pace.

"Pony Blues" is perhaps "Patton's signature song. . ." It represents one of his few key themes that he varied as time went on into other songs. The background noise is among the most annoying on the CD, but it does not obscure the work of Patton. Voice and instrumentation change throughout the song. As liner notes say, "Patton's vocal dynamics usually kept his blues from being predictable and boring."

This is a "must buy" for those who want to understand where the blues came from; it represents a key point in understanding the evolution of the blues.

Best sounding Patton on disc.......2006-12-10

I've heard four other discs of Charlie Patton's music and this new Yazoo re-remaster is by far the best sounding. Other Charlie Patton discs sound just plain muddy with too much high-end removed, others are nearly unlistenable, but not this one.

According to the liner notes, this is the first disc allowing the listener to hear "High Sheriff" and "Jersey Bull" at the correct speed. This is the only Patton disc with sound quality earning a five-star review as far as I'm concerned.

Best available quality, a must own cd!!.......2006-07-17

If you want to learn the true roots of Rock n roll, this cd is it!! Patton was a true master of the blues, and his influence changed music forever. Yazoo has done the best job at restoring his music. Do not by any other labels for early blues; Yazoo only deals with the best quality 78 rmp records that exsist.

the best sound!.......2005-01-06

let me echo an earlier review: Yazoo has completely re-mastered these timeless songs from the best available 78's; I have never heard Patton sound so three-dimensional, the remastering bringing more of a living presence to the songs than ever before. I hear things I didn't hear before, the spoken asides jump out, little touches I hadn't noticed... I've listened to Charlie Patton for well over 30 years and have never heard him sound so good. It really is astounding what Yazoo has done. Kudos to Yazoo! Their approach to the remastering this time really paid off. This is the best sounding Patton there is.

A very fine single-disc overview.......2004-04-04

If you're not up for one of the numerous Charlie Patton box sets, this is a really excellent alternative.
Yazoo's "The Best Of Charley Patton" gathers 23 cuts, 70 minutes of music, including "Down The Dirt Road Blues", "Pony Blues", "Shake It And Break It", "Banty Rooster Blues", and numerous others. The sound quality is a good as any disc you'll ever come across, and while these sides certainly aren't as clean as Robert Johnson's or Blind Willie McTell's prewar singles, Yazoo has done a really fine job remastering the songs.

There are other excellent Charlie Patton discs, like Wolf Records' "Pony Blues: His 23 Greatest Songs", Recall's very reasonably priced double-disc overview "Screamin' & Hollerin' The Blues", and Snapper's brand new "Hand It On The Wall", but as far as single disc compilations go, none are better than this one, and few are quite as good.
A very fine purchase. And kudos to Yazoo Records for actually spelling Patton's name the way he spelled it himself!

I think in YOU respect a good musician, you new to buy this one, incredible wild experimental fusion metal, I download it from a share music page, but they always recomend to buy it if you want it, I BUY IT.

If do you expect regular radio pop music, why you still reading at it.

Experimental any patton and Fantômas song makes you think why, whats that, I think the evolution of a great master musician, with a taste of old horror movie, eight thumbs up, if I was a octupus. hail patton.

10/21/06: "Suspended Animation Review" day.......2006-10-22

Mike Patton has proven himself to be one of the most prolific and unpredictable musicians in show business in his post Faith No More/Mr. Bungle career. Although I don't even begin to attempt to collect everything he puts out I do like to take a listen to what he's up to now and then.

SUSPENDED ANIMATION is packed with hundreds of ideas, of varying degrees of success. Some "days" have better moments than others, like the spooky intro for "04/11/05 Monday" that sounds like a room full of gurgling ghosts, or "04/27/05 Wednesday" 's sleigh-ride in outer space. Most of the other intriguing moments on this CD involve some manipulation of found sounds or electronic toys.

Patton's former band, Mr. Bungle, was also a band renowned for it's musical spontaneity, but whereas Bungle's songs worked through it's own inner logic and fluidness, making it easier to digest, the disparate elements of SUSPENDED ANIMATION doesn't hang together nearly as well as the best of Bungle work. It's progression is more akin to rapid-fire channel-surfing than an epic motion picture.

Despite the low rating I'm assigning this release, I must admit that I'm not sorry I bought it. I rarely reach for this CD to play, and when I do it's just to seek out a handful of random tracks, just enough to satisfy a need to hear something wild and chaotic. Perhaps the calendar concept of the song titles was meant to be followed literally, to listen to one track each day. Compressing an entire "month" in 43 minutes is too demanding a listening experience.

The technique of cutting and pasting strange sounds and bizarre segments into songs was used by Frank Zappa already during the 70's. But Fantomas succeds better at making listenable music out of it, and they add their own unique sound to it, much thanks to Mike Pattons vocals.

But I agree that a full disc of it (or at least 40 minutes) becomes a little bit annoying after a while. I found that the songs worked a lot better when I made a compilation tape, mixing the songs with other Patton related work, such as "Director's Cut" and Mr.Bungle.

"Suspended Animation" was the album that got me into Fantomas and Mr.Bungle. I was surprised to find out that Mike Patton once was the singer of Faith No More, a band I really tried to like many years ago, but that I found very boring and uninspiring. He has come a long way.

I wouldn't expect anything less from Mike Patton and Co. A piece of art crafted from cartoon insanity. Their sound is like a kid making a "Mystery Pie" in the kitchen a mixture of cookie dough, paprika, OJ, Milk and Cap n' Crunch mixed in a pie tin and burned in the oven. Ingredients that don't mix. Some gag on the concotion others see the brillance of developing artist. I see the latter. I was left speechless after a listen to it. I love the damn thing! Not everybody's cup of tea and thats too bad.

CARTOON MADNESS!!.......2006-06-08

1. The entire record is metal and cartoon music/effects thrown together and spit at your bleeding ears.
2. Because of that some tunes are certainly better than others but the album as a whole is rad.
3. Perfet driving music when you're getting irritable with traffic.
4. Also good when whiskey is involved.
- a lot of whiskey.
5. Honestly only good if you are into crazy music.
6. ALthough not my favorite Fantomas (director's cut is still the best) it seriously just kills the first one and delerium cordia..
7. And no it doesn't sound anything like Mr. bungle sorry..

But that's not necessarily a bad thing. And unlike what that other guy said, if you can fall asleep by listening to the cd then it does serve a purpose. You can listen to it when you're awake also - don't get me wrong!! This album is awesome. I play it ONLY during the months of November thru January cuz it feels Wintery. Yeah, that's what I f**king said - Wintery! It makes for some good non-denominational holiday listening. Add this cd to your rotation of Holiday Jingles while sucking on mistletoe and chugging down egg-nog.

boardering hallucination.......2006-03-16

I bought this album, because I'm a big fan of Mike Patton's work with Faith No More, Bungle, Fantomas, and Tomahawk. I know Patton is a complete nut. However, I was not familiar with John Kaada at the time of my purchase. Even though, I'm very familiar with Patton's other work, what this album had in store was very unexpected. It is possibly the creepiest, trippiest, most intriguing album I've ever heard. It is not for your average listener, by any means. This is the type of music that will take hold of one's mind, give extremely vivid hallucinations of what is going on, and wrap around the brain, squeezing it into insanity. There are abrupt dynamic and instrumentation chnages that will either confuse the hell out of you, or make you more and more curious as to what will happen next. Buy this album if you are looking for an emotional rollercoaster. It is one of the most interesting soundscapes in my collection. I personally love it. Most probably wouldn't know what to think of it.

Simple, Fasctinating, and Weirdly Romantic.......2005-05-11

I would consider myself a semi-fan of Mike Patton's past work. I've loved albums such as Mister Bungle's California, but found much of his music to be self indulgent and clever, rather than inspired. Romances blows my mind, however. Overall, this work would probably best be described as a collection of soundscapes rather than songs; and within this context it suceeds brilliantly. Throughout this album layer after layer of shimmering instrumental and evocative vocal tracks create of mood that can only be described as dreamy, sensual and yes -- romantic! In fact, what Patton & Kaada may have produced here is the most bizzare makout album of all time! If you're looking to rock out stay away from Romances. But if you're in search of something different and could use a soundtrack for getting hot and bothered with the coolest and weirdest significant other possible, I highly recommend this album.

Mildly romantic.......2005-05-10

A few tracks into "Romances," you'll probably find yourself asking the question: What movie is this from? With all that gothic ambience and sudden ups-and-downs, it sounds like the soundtrack from a surrealist vampire flick. As a result, it's a pleasant if unexceptional listen.

To some degree, it's what you'd expect of Fantomas frontman Mike Patton, when he collaborates with Norwegian melting-pot master Kaada. The opening song is a dense, built-up colossus of ghostly vocals (either high and creepy or deep and foreboding), weird synth and over-the-top organ. It sounds like Patton and Kaada are trying to scare you with the woo-woo effects.

That flavour sticks around in lesser forms in the songs that follow, which generally pair ambient effects, bells, steel guitar, electronic wibbling and some seriously sad songwriting. Patton is more restrained here than in his main band, and he is able to croon in a suitably mournful manner.

Despite the dark tone, there is some unexpected hilarity in "L'absent," which sounds like the Polyphonic Spree misplaced their meds. I've never heard "la la la" sung with such gloom. And "Pitie Pour Mes Larmes" mixes in hymns, uplifting pop with that ambient sound and some heavy crashing drums. Just try to classify that!

"Romances" is an interesting listen while it's actually on, but with at least half of each song made of gothic ambience, it feels somehow incomplete and insubstantial. A few songs have a solid sound to tap into -- such as the opening song "Invocations" -- but most of them meander with lots of creepy sound effects.

It is a pretty listen, though, with some solid instrumentation in the form of bass, steel guitar, drums, and clarinet, with multilayered washes of sound sweeping over it all. And Patton's mournful wails are suitably creepy, just the sort of thing you'd expect in a haunted castle, abandoned palace, decrepit opera house, or something of the sort.

"Romances" is not exactly a revelation, but it is a moderately entertaining piece of gothic ambient music. Patton and Kaada could have done better, but at least they did well enough.
