In the early 20th century New Orleans jazz musicians traveled up the Mississippi River to Chicago. The talented 24-year-old Windy City trumpeter Maurice Brown has made the reverse migration to the Crescent City, where he's emerged as a phenom. His debut CD aurally illustrates his burgeoning, diamond-in-the-rough trumpet style, influenced by masters like Fats Navarro, and Wynton Marsalis, the man who discovered him. Backed by a quicksilver New Orleans combo featuring Los Hombres Calientes percussionist Bill Summers, Brown's material is modern, neo-classic, and surprisingly accessible. The melodically complex opener "Rapture," swings like Miles Davis's classic 1960s combos and "Mi Amor" is a mature ballad, while "It's a New Day" bops with funky backbeats that echo Donald Byrd's finest flights from the 1970s. Like Roy Hargrove and Russell Gunn before him, Maurice Brown keeps it real, and reels in new listeners with his tradition in transition approach. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
Album Description
Hip to Bop is unusually sophisticated and timeless for a debut album. Trumpeter Maurice Brown's original pulse-quickening compositions will make die-hard jazz fans feel like they're listening to a long-lost album by the Miles Davis Quintet, while causing others to exclaim, "This is jazz?!" In the first track, "Rapture," the thumping heartbeat of the bass will envelop your ears, and then quietly explode into a melodic cacophony of horns, drums, and piano. But just as Maurice quickens your pulse, he'll then pepper your ear with a soulful groove in "It's a New Day," before letting you catch your breath with a caressing melody, "Mi Amor." It's at this point you realize this is no ordinary jazz trumpeter and this is certainly no ordinary contemporary jazz album. In "A Call for All Angels," "Anazao," "Conceptions," and "Look Ma No Hands," he illustrates his ability to create a comfort zone from the ballad to the virtuoso. In the album's liner notes, jazz great Ellis Marsalis proclaims, "Hip to Bop is an appropriate title for a cd that employs background riffs, wide intervals in the melody, a trumpet solo with a wah wah pedal all combined to connect the modern idiom to the BeBop tradition. He is paying homage to the past with elements of the present serving as the foundation for future concepts. Such is the tasteful compositional technique of Maurice Brown." Without a doubt, Hip to Bop belongs in the musical library of every music lover.
Customer Reviews:
Good jazz is still alive today!.......2006-01-07
What a delight to discover a young jazz artist cranking out new music this good TODAY (not forty years ago)! Several of the tracks on this album are really top-notch. Most of them really showcase Brown's (& the band's) skill. I love the glory days of Miles Davis & John Coltrane, so I'm glad I heard about Brown from a jazz critic, who seems like the Real Deal.
One of the interesting (and, to me, surprising) things about this album is the diversity of styles represented. On the "technically brilliant but not as listener-friendly" side, you have "Rapture" and "Look Ma No Hands" that hearken back to the austere bop of decades past. And on the "it's like when a heavy metal band throws a boring ballad on their album" side, we have "Mi Amor" and "A Call For All Angels".
But I think all the tracks in the middle are golden. "Conceptions" & "Hip to Bop" fall on the bop side, and "It's a New Day" & "Anazao" are more radio-friendly (but still high quality). Personally, I'd like more of these that hit the sweet spot of quality & accessibility, but I'm not complaining.
All About Jazz criticized the eclectic nature of this album, saying Brown has not yet found his artistic voice. Perhaps (he is young), or perhaps he was showcasing his artistic range. OR perhaps he (or his record company) was fishing for a target audience and or trying to please them all. I'll let others decide! I'm too busy listening to the album.
You are gonna love this album!.......2005-02-26
Maurice Brown is such a talent. He has such enthusiasm and expression. Whether he is playing his original compostions or something as beautiful as the standard "Misty"...you just want to listen. I look forward to more and more of this young great musician. Having seen him perform in person, I just feel he really know what music and working together with his fellow musicians is about. You can actually see him smile while he is performing. Buy it, you will love it!
TALENTED.......2005-01-25
When I first heard Hip to Bop, I woke up the next morning humming track one- Rapture. It was fascinating to me that in just one day, I had managed to remember such an intricate piece. Maurice's music has a commonality that is undeniable. His songs give you a notion that you already know the tune, even though you know it is an original. This album sends Jazz to a new audience as well as the avid Jazz fans. The album has a more youthful feel that just moves, grooves, and soothes ya. Maurice Brown is truly talented, and the next major Jazz name that everyone will know.
Best jazz album of the year.......2004-10-26
I really love hip to bop with its complex melodies and advanced rhythms, maurice brown is truly ahead of his time. There are deep roots of The Great Miles Davis and the complex soul of John Coltrane all mixed into one. If you are a listener of great jazz and even if you are not a listener of jazz I think this album will sure wet your whistle. This album should get some grammy nominations. So if you love great cats like this one, go out and buy his album it will be well worth the money and your music listening pleasure. Hip to Bop gets 50 stars from me. Waiting for the next album.
Wynton, Nicholas, and Roy! ...Make Way for Maurice!.......2004-10-09
If you're a fan of Wynton Marsalis, Nicholas Payton or Roy Hargrove, you'll dig Maurice Brown! This is the album you'll have in your cd player every day, all day long. It never gets old! From beginning to end, each song is original and different from the previous. Truly a masterpiece, especially for a debut album, I think Maurice Brown should win a grammy! I promise you won't be disappointed. If you are a music lover, this album's for you!...it's exceptionally well done, I definitely recommend it!

- Forever... (27:00)
- ...and Here (27:00)
Product Description
Hypnotic, Trance inducing and therapeutic instrumental music with a Grand Piano (Bechstein) lead played over electronic layers and slow pulsating rhythms. Shirley Maclaine used an excerpt from "Forever..." for her bestselling Video INNER WORKOUT. The music for REFLECTING LIGHT was inspired by the book THE BLUE ISLAND a transcendental experience channelled by the daughter of a journalist who died in the Titanic accident.
Customer Reviews:
Hypnotic Music.......2006-12-22
Wonderful music (2 long pieces) It is great for trance-inducing states or just to relax and drift away. Very good music for psychic sessions or readings. The slow rolling piano melody of "Forever..." sounds like an eternal, timeless rhythm that opens up your conscious awareness, but is very relaxing at the same time. "...and Here" is sparkling and uplifting.
A new age classic!

Awesome!! Different!!.......2005-08-01
I first stumbled upon Shiva In Exile while playing around in iTunes radio section. I was feeling adventurous and went to the World Music section and found music that I wouldn't normally listen to. This is quite a world away from the norm and frankly, I like to get away from the norm every once in a while. I instantly fell in love with the independantly labled (Magnatune) composer. It's the kind of music you relax to or if you're feeling crazy, float off to another world. As someone interested in different cultures of the world, this fits right in with my craving for something new and different. I also recommend these indy names... Tilopa, Beth Quist, Solace, Stellamara, Tim Rayborn. If you like folk music, try Shira Kammen or Drevo, all under the Magnatune lable. Each song on this album makes you feel like you're experiencing eastern culture (particularly Indian) at its best. Great Composition!!

Product Description
Sofia Sensei's record has a haunting quality to it. The songs she has written with Rick Watling are very strong.
"Fly Higher" has a message of hope and a very nice sound to it. "Insides Out" is tougher with a distorted vocal and string instruments used in an unfamiliar way.
Sunseri approaches her vocal on "I Wait" with a jazz singer's sense of timing. The song itself is an odd but appealing cross of jazz and trip hop.
The lengthy "What is Happenin" uses the African instrument djembe to great effect. The songs slow groove suits Sunseri's voice perfectly.
