Dream Sequence 3: The Collective

Editorial Reviews
From URB Magazine
Blake Baxter has enjoyed more than a decade of work with Germany's Tresor, and double album The Collective is his fourth LP for them (and seventh overall). His musical reputation as a lascivious techno Casanova is not unlike other producers in his native Detroit such as ghetto-tech DJ Assault. But his competent variety in production finds him just as effective in slower moods ("Telescopic") and heady disco vibes ("Intoxicated," perhaps the album's best tune) as well as more urgent dance floor fare ("Acid Belch," or his nod to Adonis in "Alot Like You"). While others remain comfortably metronomic, Baxter still freaks the beat.

Ladies, let the second disc's opener, "5/7/99," be ample proof of why you should not have sex with Baxter (unless you want your activities vocodered and broadcast on a widely distributed album). These overt tracks which pepper the album could never be as sexy as the ones where the rhythms are allowed to speak for themselves. This second half of The Collective meanders more than the first and is less tight, though not without its highlights. But it's tough to justify the release of a double album, and this might've been more potent as an album of normal length.
