Roger Troutman...Genius!.......2006-07-03
It's nice 2 see someone finally remastered a classic album(Why does Rhino have 2 do everything? Shame on you Warner Brothers!!).What can I say? this is every funk fan's talkbox hero.Highly underated as a musician and songwriter,Roger took a classic song(Grapevine)and used his technology of the talkbox 2 make it a #1 R&B hit.I've seen him do this song at concert back in 98(1 year before his death)it was incredible,Roger& Zapp gave their all in a live show.I understand they still tour together(Zapp) but it wouldn't be the same not seeing Roger on stage playing the talkbox( It would be like The Revolution touring without Prince,it just doesn't make sense).I guess their still keeping his name alive so I guess I could understand, but with the amount of songs this man and his sound have been sampled on his name will never die.Rest In Peace Roger( BET,Soul Train and any other award show are insulting your legacy)
I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE !.......2006-07-02
So sad the way Roger Troutman's life ended, along with his brother, Larry Troutman. Whatever was going on with them, i don't really know, but i wish they would have solved it in alot better way, than ending both of their lives, but their hits will live on and on !!
sophisticated with a touch of grits and gravy.......2004-04-15
The work of the late musician Roger Troutman and his band Zapp has been widely exposed to the public through his association with the funk movement of the `late `70s and early `80s and the countless music samples taken from his work by rap artists. But if anyone even gives this guy a second thought these days, it's usually because of his innovative work with the "talk box," a voice-activated synthesizer popularized by Peter Frampton around the same time. Though he made a lot of great songs using the talk box, these casual fans are missing out on the "many facets" of one of funk's most versatile artists.
"The Many Facets of Roger" is Roger Troutman's first solo album from 1981. If you like your funk sophisticated but with a touch of grits and gravy, you're missing out on a gem. Troutman's command of multiple instruments, especially the guitar, is an aural treat. On "Maxx Axe," for example, he uses both raw synthesized and classy nylon-string guitar work, along with bouncy rhythm guitar and bass to ensconce the listener in jazz-funk guitar heaven. Whether "new-school" jazz artists like Marc Antoine realize it or not, Troutman provided the basic blueprint for their up-tempo work with "Axe" and other treats on "Facets" like "Do It Roger" and "A Chunk of Sugar"
Not stopping at sophisti-funk, Troutman brings a whole new dimension to a classic with his rendition of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine." Who knows what possessed him to mess with such a legendary song, but he does it justice with a very fresh and funky groove, and fun instrumentation. In a similar vein is his very original "So Rough So Tough," a staple of "Old School" R&B stations everywhere. Not missing a beat, Troutman tackles the blues in "Blue (A Tribute To the Blues)," surprisingly good and authentic, even for Troutman.
Unlike many albums of this era, there is no filler. Every song on "Facets" is strong: tightly produced and played with sublime vocals, still sounding very fresh twenty-something years after the original release. Included in the reissue of "Facets" are single edits of "Grapevine" and "Do It" and an unreleased 1997 track called "Superman" that shows that funk constantly evolves. "Superman" is just as informed by the work of Nine Inch Nails as it is by George Clinton.
If you've read this far, you know you want "The Many Facets of Roger." Do yourself a favor. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.
Gotta Have It!.......2003-11-13
"The Many Facets Of Roger" is by far one of the Top 5 BEST
funk albums ever recorded, mabye the best one ever! From the 10
minute plus "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" through the
fluid "Maxx Axe" every cut here is a horn-packed,electro funk
delight and unlike some 80's music it has aged extremely well.
The album doesn't really lend itself well to comment-you simply
have to hear it yourself!
Roger's Best CD.......2003-08-25
This CD is great from beginning to end including the unreleased song "Superman", but the song I thought that should have been a single is "Maxx Axe". It's a really long song, really good, and in my opinion definitley would have done great on the charts.

Album Description
This is the much anticipated follow-up to Fr. Stan's highly successful Catholic Rap CD from 1998 called Sacro Song. In Sacro Song II, Fr. Stan continues to explore the human condition in its many facets. The music is fresh and original, the messages are moral and true. Although the CD is primarily rap, Fr. Stan is able to blend in touches of jazz and world beat percussion. This makes for an interesting marriage of musical genres. Fr. Stan dedicates the CD to His Holiness Pope John Paul II.
Customer Reviews:
Brought tears to my eyes.......2007-01-13
I am a newcomer to Fr. Stan's music and was looking for a stocking stuffer Christmas gift for my teenager and decided to order this for him. When I played it, I couldn't believe the magnitude of his words; and even though I am not a fan of rap or hip-hop music, I found his words cutting through me like a knife and bringing tears to my eyes. I can't stop listening to it. I am placing an order for the rest of his music.
Oh, My beloved world you have given me so much and yet..........2004-05-16
The opening lyrics of Libre are a truth that can free any one of their consumerism or other plight.
Fr. Stan has a wonderful skill to make his music transcend the usual contraints. I am a middle-aged housewife from the 'burbs -- not the average rap fan. I love Cell 91, Unborn Victims of Violence, Everybdy Got to Suffer,Theology of the Body, the Magnificat and Libre.
I love Father Stan and the Heavenly Father, too.
A World Youth Day gift.......2004-05-06
When I meet Fr. Stan during World Youth Day 2002, I asked if I could possibly buy one of his CD's if he had a spare copy. He ended up just giving it to me for free (what a franciscan thing to do!)
Anyway, I would definitely recomend this CD to anyone, Catholic or not. It's well written, well recorded, and the music is a blast!
The Truth in language for our culture.......2002-06-22
I didn't know whether Fr Stan could do it yet again but he has... he has produced an album filled with songs which communicate Christian truth in the language and style of modern youth culture.
The highlights are "Everybody Got to Suffer" where he raps about how we all experience suffering while attacking the sinful preoccupation with violence associated with so much rap music; "Unborn Victims of Violence" which is an awesome pro-life rap which MUST be heard; and "Libre" - a piece of rhythmic poetry on the power of Christ, written and performed by Bro. Augustino.
The other tracks are fantastic too. This is an excellent follow up to Sacro Song (if you liked that album, you'll definitely enjoy this) and all his previous work. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
What a followup!!!!!.......2002-06-17
Fr. Stan did it again, with this excellent followup to Sacro Song. Whether you love rap or hate it, I can guarantee that you'll love this CD. Some of the songs are more like recited poetry put to music than hard-core rap. But that is the strength of Fr. Stan's style. He is musically very solid and innovative. And once again, it shows on this CD. There's a latin rap with a great beat. There's a slow blues/jazz rap that is emotionally charged. There's lots of African percussion. And it opens and closes with a beautiful rendition of the Magnificat with original music composed by Fr. Stan. Something for everyone.....and last, but not least, the messages and teachings in the songs NEED to be heard. I especially liked the politically motivated "Unborn Victims of Violence". When you read the words and understand the message, it makes perfect sense. Fr. Stan does not pull any punches with his lyrics. He'll make you think and make you feel - while putting it to great music. Thanks, Fr. Stan!

Sophisticated, nuanced, gorgeous jazz.......2004-05-27
Sometimes it almost seems as if the REALLY good ones get swallowed up in the hype expended on the MERELY good ones.
I think that's the case here.
All these players are top drawer.
Yet none of them is exactly a household name.
Steve Gilmore (bass) and Bill Goodman (drums) are, of course, the rhythm section of altoist Phil Woods greatest and longest running group. Gene Bertoncini, an acoustic guitar player of exceptional taste and sophistication, has graced many wonderful sessions. Yet, their collective presence is almost minimal. Leader Niewood (various woodwind instruments) is practically invisible on the modern jazz scene.
Thus, a truly fine, even revelatory, session such as this is likely to get lost in the welter of more prominent jazz releases.
Too bad.
Certainly, this is among the finest offerings of 2004. It s(w)ings with an ease and grace seldom encountered in (Post)Modern jazz. Brimming with ease of expression and casual cleverness, this is a disc of the highest order of jazz accomplishment.
Yet, it will probably slip entirely under the radar of top jazz discs of 2004.
What a shame. I'm declaring it among the best of this year's offerings.
Simply wonderful. Miss it at your peril.

Monty's Best.......2004-08-30
Monty Alexander, one of the greatest living jazz pianists, was never better than on this album of pure jazz pleasure and joy. An essential disc for any jazz collection, this is the perfect introduction to Monty Alexander for those who don't know him. I don't own a jazz CD that I listen to more. It's endlessly inventive, rhymically and harmonically, and is as fresh today as the day it came out.
Facets is a Great Album.......2000-05-22
Monty Alexander is the essence of the perfect pianist. He is a joy to listen to. Facets is quite literally, a great album. Monty and Ray Brown are wonderful together.

Album Description
Facets was originally recorded and released in 1966, with only 500 copies ever made, using money received as a wedding present. Recorded when he was just 22 years old, Facets illustrates the singer/songwriter's earliest influences and hints at the talent that would later make him one of the most popular artists of his era. The new version of the album includes all the original songs, as well as seven rare bonus tracks hand-selected by wife Ingrid and son A.J. Croce, as a two-disc set, Facets and Jim & Ingrid Too.
Customer Reviews:
Great CD - shame no credit given to producer or musicians.......2004-07-20
We received this CD as a gift from a good friend of Jim Croce's, who also happened to master the original recording (which we also have). While the music is excellent, of course, and a "must" for all fans, it's a shame that our friend and the other musicians who played on the original recording (also friends of ours)were given no credit at all.
Another Gem That Traces The Early Talents Of Jim Croce!.......2004-04-07
I have all of Jim Croce's work that's been available over the last 32 years in my collection! "Facets", unavailable since 1966, is another gem that traces the early talents of Jim Croce and it is an essential title in filling in a missing piece of Croce's musical history! As these early recordings become available it is now possible to listen to Croce's musical progression from the 60's to the early 70's chart topping artist he became before his all too early death in 1973. I give this recording 4 1/2 stars because of the 7 song bonus disc but the rating system doesn't account for fractions so that's why it shows as a 4 star rating. Thanks to the Croce family for yet another new release in about a 4 month period! I only wonder why they waited 30 years since Jim's death to issue "Americana: Home Recordings" and now "Facets", both of which were long overdue!
Another Masterpiece from Jim Croce.......2004-04-02
If you are a Jim Croce fan like I am the "Facets" album is an incredible find. This album is a rare collection of some of Jim earliest work. The album was originally released in 1966 when Croce was only 22 years old. There were originally only 500 copies of this album made. The album includes all the original tracks as well as seven rare bonus tracks which were chosen by Jim's son A.J. and wife Ingrid. I had never even heard some of these songs, but they all possess Jim's lyrical and melodic magic. The first disc includes tracks like "Steel Rail Blues", with a with smooth harmonica sounds and "Hard Hearted Hannah (the Vamp of Savannah)" with a bluesy guitar and 16 more amazing tracks. This two disk album is an incredible collection from who I believe is one of the greatest songwriters of our time. I hope you guys like it as much as I do.

Not the "Tonight Show" Doc!.......2004-07-06
The only time I had ever heard Doc Severensen were the cheesy 10 second cut-away and cut-back music on "The Tonight Show" years ago, and who can forget Doc's equally cheesy ties.
But when a friend let me listen to this CD I was blown away at what this veteran trumpeteer blows out! Every track is a piece of sonic candy to the ears. Doc's modern arrangements of jazz standards are wonderfully done complementing Doc's smooth playing, and when mixed with the "round table" of the studio musician scene makes "Facets" an awesome collection of music that will never reside as a dust collector in your music library.
An Elegant and Excellent CD.......2002-02-25
Doc Severinsen and Jeff Tyzik (himself a trumpeter), collaborated on this wonderful and soon to be classic Jazz release. It is apparent that Tyzic had the synergy and forethought to account for the talents of Doc in compiling this CD. In my extensive CD collection this compact disc is atop the listening pile.
My favorite cuts on this CD are the selections written by Mr. Tyzik himself. Cuts as, "City Lights, Siciliano, and Crystal Garden" are phenomenal: This is Jazz at its harmonious best. Jeff Tyzik is a master arranger because he charted many of the other contained selections: He produced the compact disc as well.
Several years ago Jazziz Magazine (as if this matters), listed this CD as one of the decades best CDs. Their music critics have been wrong on many other CDs but not on this particular choice.
On the date of this scribe I saw that there were four used CDs to be found at Amazons website. This should not be so...I mean why would anyone in their right mind want to sell this very fine release? Are they that hard up for money? Buy this fantastic release; I reiterate, in later years it will be considered a Jazz classic.
Brilliant modern arranemnts of classic jazz tunes........1999-02-19
Doc sounds wonderful on this recording. The arrangements (and production) by Jeff Tyzik of these classic jazz standards are stunning. The players include Earnie Watts, Lee Ritenour and Peter Erskine. The mix is very clear allowing all players to be appreciated to thier fullest.

Facets of the Universe, originally released om LP in 1969, is truly a fascinating document of the Pan-African avant-garde jazz captured at a place where European, African, American and West Indian roots merged to create two universal improvisations. What more could SELWYN LISSACK have asked of a single opportunity to record as a leader?
For this reissue on New York avant record store Downtown Music Gallery's own ARC label,a bonus cut is included. The track Friendship Next of Kin is presented in two versions: an edited version which includes a drum solo excised from the original take (replayed here), and the album version without the solo.

Sweet Nothings for the Demonic Ear........1998-07-09
This a is a beautiful piece of work. The artist touches many areas of music (Darkwave Ambiant and Gothic). A must for any CHRISTAIN DEATH fan.
My Review of the Best Female Singer Around...Gitane Demone.......1998-06-17
This CD is the BEST I have heard from Gitane, don't get me wrong, her other CD Demonix was good, but this is very, very good. I don't know how to put it, but "Somewhere" is sort of a Jazz/Blues Gothic sound, Gitane's vocals, range everywhere, showing her true emotion for the song. As does for "Lullaby For a Troubled Man" which the only instrument...the piano is used, is wonderful at it's all best. "Heavenly Melancholy" is sort of a up beat dance style tune. And it's very easy to dance to. Her cover of Cole Porter's "Love For Sale" is the best song for me off the Album. I love it!! Keep it up Gitane!! :)
