When they exploded out of the gates on their 2004 debut, Contraband, Velvet Revolver were met with as much diffidence as appreciation. After all, supergroups have tended to detonate as often as succeed, and with vocalist Scott Weiland, bassist Duff McKagan, and guitarist Slash all vying to keep the lit match away from the fuse, the odds against this band ever seeing album #2 were even money at best. Surprise! Not only have Velvet Revolver survived three years with unreckless abandon, this album blows the doors off its predecessor. Save a pair of disinfected ballads ("The Last Fight," "Gravedancer"), Libertad is all about hand-grenade chords, drag-racing riffs, and circus-tent choruses. The ageless McKagan and Slash continually gun for the disorderliness of their former band (most notably on the punkish opener "Let It Roll" and its lewd brother "Spay"), while Weiland sounds--knock on wood--positively clean and like a voice of boisterous renewal on tracks like "Mary Mary," "She Builds Quick Machines," and the melt-in-your-mouth cover of ELO's "Can't Get It Out of My Head." Obviously egos have been checked at the studio door, as Velvet Revolver have already exceeded their anticipated existence. And now that existence goes back on the clock, trying to outshine a second album that's head-and-shoulders better than the first. --Scott Holter

Hey Nice Velvet Release.......2007-07-12
This Latest Album Libertad from Velvet Revolver is as good as their debut a little bit more focused in some areas then there are some tracks you are going to say . is this it, come on a little more depth and creativity? so it's not a 5 to 10 star album but it is still a good listen. for some people expecting some else it may take a couple of listens before you actually start groovin to this album. but it is not a bad album, i just think that Velvet should've put more licks and riffs and fills to make Libertad tighter on some of the tracks, but i guess they can do that on the next album.
Rock On Guys .
Coaster.......2007-07-11
This album sounds like a scott weiland solo album, i listened to it 2 times all the way through and just couldnt find anything worth listening to, i was hoping for a hard rock/rock album and they come out with a retro album, you cant really even tell slash is on the album other than a few solos. I gave it away.
Unexpected.......2007-07-11
This album was a huge suprise. I got contraband because I was a rageing STP fan and mildly interested in GNR. I was not sure what to expect with contraband, but it ended up being a huge dissappointment. I listened to it about 3 times and it has since been collecting dust. So I baught Libertad because I am a completeist, and I was not expecting much. But to my suprise and delight this album rules. It is fun, rockin, and a great summer time rock record. With contraband they sounded like STP and GNR got into a car accident and the survivors quickly ran to the nearest studio and put out a half a**'ed attempt at an album. But on Libertead they sound like a real band, and it works well. I would say 90% of the album sounds awesome, with the remaining 10% sounding ok. Scott sounds fantasic, I guess getting clean has done him a lot of good. (It still does not touch the excellence of his STP days but I'll take it.) He is a real rock n' roll MF. peace
Took a few listens! .......2007-07-11
When I first put this cd in and checked it out, I was disappointed at what I heard. Nothing really stood out from the get go. I really liked the guitar lick in tune number two, but other than that it seems to be lacking something. However after about the 4th or 5th spin, I really started to get into it and now am pretty pleased with what on here. Yeah it's nothing ground breaking or earth shattering, but it's good straight ahead hard rock which is something I do enjoy a lot.
If you liked the first one?, you'll probably grow to like this one as well as it's pretty much a carbon copy of the first outing.
Heart & Soul.......2007-07-11
Usually second albums always reflect the pressure of the session. Directions, enviromental, industry? There is always eyes upon the goods that long before the recorded meterial showed their real passion. In libertad passion is the word. When rock gods of the day goes east oriented sound (Robert Plant, Perry Farrel, etc...) Velvet revolver goes the west and slap around the punk attitude that create the sub text of the record. Songs like American Man & Marry Marry feels like you stand inside the empty pool and watch the watcher of the hood. This feeling completed itself with the image of a cop car which slowly passed in front of your porch, you see the changing light upon... All tracks are trace of the lost generation with stomping riffs. Even Duff McKagan feels comfortably this time. Also Matt Sorum is more adventures like he is in the Camp Freddy. But real gem is beetween Scott and Slash. When the slick and warm feel productions hit, there is no real damage reported here. The Last Fight and For A Brother are best vocals of the Scott with STP's Plush and Slash is edgy as hell. But the challenge position begins with the track like Pills, Demons & Etc and Just Sixteen-these are "band" tracks. When the album is fnished, you know the fact that; this isn't a some kind of Project. This is a real band.

Chris Daughtry starts his first post-American Idol disc with a song whose title reviewers coast to coast will be grateful for: "It's Not Over." What an understatement. For the Idol-watching rock fan's money, nobody--not even Southern-fried heartthrob Bo Bice in season four--stormed the stage with more raw talent. That it translates so well to a solo disc (Daughtry was recorded with studio musicians; future discs will include a Daughtry-assembled band) proves all he needed was a little prodding, the kind the tube has gotten so good at. Here are a dozen songs that'll flick your rock & roll switch, whether you're a Creed fan, a club kid, or a mambo king: "Used To" and "Over You," a couple of early tracks, ought to arrive bundled with a road map they're so highway sing-along-ready, and "Feels Like Tonight" screws the lid on the premise that Daughtry can deliver a punchy pop-rock song without flinching. Elsewhere, the North Carolina family man lets his inner (and outer, actually) goatee- and eyeliner-type guy rip: his built-for-the-hard-stuff voice bites down appealingly on "Breakdown," a dark serenade to mental health, and also on "What I Want," an '80s-style fist-pumper featuring Slash. The loud mad dash of those songs leads to a midtempo wind-down ("All These Lives," "What About Now"), but as a mix, it works. Daughtry is a man of many moods--contemplative, explosive, insistent, humble. No matter which pokes through on a given song, he steadies it to a place as honest as it is accessible. Rare is the rocker who lays out so broad an on-ramp. --Tammy La Gorce

chris was my favorite on AI and i was mad when he was kicked out early. maybe a lot of people knew a heck of a lot more than me. at least, he's still out there trying. i'm still a fan-good luck Chris!!

Chris Rocks!.......2007-07-12
This album is great. I enjoy every song - a rare occurence. Chris has a unique, enjoyable voice. Chris is my favoite American Idol contestant of all time and deserves the huge amount of record sales he is expereincing with his debut album. Two hit singles off this already and more to come.
The Procedure In Forming Daughtry.......2007-07-12
First, your lead singer must enter FOX's biggest (and rigged) TV show called American Idol. This will give him the exposure on national television, raise his ego by over a thousand points, and make him idolized amongst the mainstream audience. Second, it doesn't matter if you win, you'll still get all the fans who loved you to support your future. You'll end up on TV, and people will still adore you, even if you didn't make in American Idol. Top four is good enough on a fixed show! Third, to advance your career and get your name heard, form a band, but your band must not have creativity, originality, and must appeal to the people that adored Nickelback and Hinder's watered-down, lifeless trash. Fourth, you cut your third album, claiming it's not pop, yet it reaches number one on the Billboard 200.
This album is just what you'd expect to be on your generic hard rock station. There are much more talented vocalists than Daughtry, believe me, like Mike Patton (Faith No More/Mr. Bungle), Dax Riggs (Acid Bath/Agents of Oblivion), Burton C. Bell (Fear Factory, Ascension of the Watchers) and Pete Steele (Type O Negative) which display excellent talent and range. What's that? They've been in the game longer than Daughtry? At least they didn't have to get where they are right now by some rigged FOX network show. Amirite?
Oh yeah, Daughtry also covered a Creed song when he was an American Idol contestant! *burst in laughter*
Something New.......2007-07-10
Most bands you here now a days all sound the same. When you buy their cd its only for a couple of songs. Daughtry has an awesome group of songs on this cd. The songs all have their own sound and they are actually pretty good. This is an upbeat cd that you wont regret buying after you listen to it. You can listen to this cd all the way through! It's a good choice.
A Must Have!!!.......2007-07-09
All I can say is, flippin brilliant! This is NOT an album that you buy and there ends up only being one song on it you like. No, EVERY song is great! If you like a bit of rock and songs you can really let go and sing along with this is the album to have. Is excellent when mowing the lawns, working out at the gym, or those long road trips, or pretty much any time of the day. Best song on the album has got to be Home.
I would recommend this album to anyone, I do believe you will all love it :-) Buy it now!!

Before Sgt. Pepper, no one seriously thought of rock music as actual art. That all changed in 1967, though, when John, Paul, George and Ringo (with "A Little Help" from their friend, producer George Martin) created an undeniable work of art which remains, after 30-plus years, one of the most influential albums of all time. From Lennon's evocative word/sound pictures (the trippy "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," the carnival-like "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite") and McCartney's music hall-styled "When I'm 64," to Harrison's Eastern-leaning "Within You Without You," and the avant-garde mini-suite, "A Day in the Life," Sgt. Pepper was a milestone for both '60s music and popular culture. --Billy Altman

Sometimes the Memory is Better than the Reality.......2007-07-12
What a disappointment! I adored this record when it came out; it was so different than most then current pop music, calling upon traditions which we scarcely new of at the time. So while highly innovative pop music FOR IT'S TIME, I've since gone on to hear the real older music from which Pepper drew; after listening to Fletcher Henderson my standard for being impressed by innovation has risen considerably. Worse though, the HORRIBLE sound quality deemphsizes all the interesting effects George Martin got. Some of these same tunes are on the Yellow Submarine DVD; they sound fine there so maybe my memory isn't that bad. I'll bet the vinyl version is/was better.
Yuck.......2007-07-11
Sounds worn and dated. Sounded good maybe when you were on drugs in the sixties but now, it's drek.
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.......2007-07-03
Good to hear this again after so many years. So many familiar songs on one album.
The Genius of the Beatles.......2007-07-02
I can't decribe how much I love this album. I strongly believe that this is the groups best album and the best album that's ever been released. It's meant to be a studio album and not played live cause the guys were just so sick of touring, and it just was the only way with this new direction they were going in.
Paul came up with the concept after hearing about Elvis' Car went "On Tour." He thought that Sgt.Pepper would be an interesting concept to have these alter egos, so the music "wouldn't be songs that they necessarily wrote, but Sgt.Pepper did." The opening track "Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and " the Reprise are really the only songs that directly match up with the concept, but the songs inbetween are just as close to perfect as one could get them to be.
With a little help from my Friends is great, but I personally like Joe Cocker's version better (the one from the Wonder Years.
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was written after a drawing Julian lennon did and commonly thought of to be a drug song. It's one of my favorite Lennon songs. I love the intro with Paul's Bass, it's so simple but it just hits my ear drums the right way.
Getting Better is about the time when John was really falling for Yoko.
I love George's guitar in Fixing a Hole. It sounds a lot like (Ticket to Ride)
She's Leaving Home is a sad song that's got McCartney written all over it.
The following track has that weird surreal circus sound that's very fitting for the album. George Martin was great at helping the group come up with new sounds.
Within You Without You often goes unnoticed i think. It's a great song by George, that I think is great, the sound, the lyrics, etc.
Lovely Rita and When I'm Sixty four are nice little tunes but not very fitting i don't think, I would have liked to have seen Strawberry Fields be on this album cause it was the first track recorded during the sessions and because it's a great lennon song.
I like the randomness of Good Morning Good Morning. The title comes from a Corn Flakes commerical that John overheard when he was writting one day.
A Day in the Life is right after the reprise. I love how John and Pau tied in their separate parts with a great orchestral crescendo. Everything just goes together and it just works.
Definitely pick this album up if you haven't or download it or check it out at your library cause it's a must have for any music fan or art fan cause this is such an important album in music history and it changed music forever, no joke.
Classic Beatles...Must Have.......2007-06-26
Takes me back to my youth. My kid loves it and doesn't believe I know all the songs and the order they are in on the CD.

The Beatles' last days as a band were as productive as any major pop phenomenon that was about to split. After recording the ragged-but-right Let It Be, the group held on for this ambitious effort, an album that was to become their best-selling. Though all four contribute to the first side's writing, John Lennon's hard-rocking, "Come Together" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" make the strongest impression. A series of song fragments edited together in suite form dominates side two; its portentous, touching, official close ("Golden Slumbers"/"Carry That Weight"/"The End") is nicely undercut, in typical Beatles fashion, by Paul McCartney's cheeky "Her Majesty," which follows. --Rickey Wright

I am buying a new copy.......2007-07-13
This is my favorite album (well, one of them), so I have wrecked mine by listening to it on the beach.... Number 10 to the end are totally WRECKED. So here I am, buying a new copy. I haven't heard the second half of the album in a loooong time!
Great songwriting and production of Romantic Pop Rock.......2007-07-12
If you are a fan of angry music, this ain't for you (sorry). In the context of the times it had a certain charm and still retains much of the original charm. If you are not a romantic, don't try to understand this album or band. Because the Beatles were, if nothing else, hopeless romantics who used music to find love. On that level Abbey Road works quite well. For the segment of the population that enjoys romantic rock you will find this collection of songs rewarding.
If I could pick only one Beatles CD to play this would be it.......2007-07-08
The Fab Four were at the top of their form and their work was varied and adventurous on "Abbey Road". While murder wasn't a totally unknown topic in rock, "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" with its bright instrumentation blew our minds back in the day.
Odd and sad that "Come Together" opens this CD and it was the last of their big hits together. I've rearranged this one on my iPod so that "Golden Slumbers" and is the last of this offering. Just seemed fitting to me.
My personal favorite.......2007-07-08
I was a college freshman in 1963 when the Beatles burst upon the scene in the United States. For the next 7 years, my friends and I waited with baited breath for each new album release. By 1970, the party was over for the Beatles, but their music lives on and has been embraced by each succeeding generation. What has always amazed me is how their music could be so diverse, innovative and flat-out wonderful and at the same time be so commercially successful. One does not usually associate high artistic quality with mass popularity.
I will avoid the unproveable assertion that "Abbey Road" is the group's best album but will state unequivocably that it is my all-time favorite. The music is truly inspired, particularly the medley on the second side. I am truly grateful that the Beatles stayed together long enough to record this masterpiece.
Fab Four's True Swan Song.......2007-06-28
'Abbey Road' is the last Beatles album, although 'Let It Be' was released afterwards. After all these years and listening to this record on vinyl, I got to say this is one of the best sounding albums of all time. Despite the fact that sound quality technology has been refined over the last 40 years, no one could do it better then the Beatles.
"Come Together" begans this album and always has been one of my Top favorite Beatle songs. Another favorite and beginning side two is "Here Comes the Sun" which I believe is George Harrison's best song out of all of the fab fours catalog. One of his best loved songs.
Sure, there are rather silly songs like Paul's "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" (which I truly enjoyed growing up, still do) and Ringo's "Octopus' Garden" - but I believe these songs add surrealism and fun to one of The Beatles' best.
'Abbey Road' truly is the last Great Beatles album. The band with this release provides a very cohesive sound, working together, although they were on the verge of splitting up.
Ringo Starr's drumming is at his best on this record, especially on tracks like "Oh! Darling" and "The End"
To me, 'Abbey Road' sounds Worlds ahead of 'Let It Be'-which is still a great album. On 'Let It Be' is the album that the Fab Four sound like independent members, rather then what they do best - working together.
- A perfect end to the World's Greatest pop band.

Latin for "common era," Era Vulgaris holds a pair of common threads with the four Queens of the Stone Age records that preceded it. One, it crosses colossal guitar chords with the most volatile of hard rock melodies. And second, it's as LOUD as loud gets, thanks to Josh Homme, the impatient instigator behind the ever-evolving cast of personalities that make up the band. Detonation comes with track one, as the jagged riffs of "Turning on the Screw" lead the listener into "Sick, Sick, Sick," where Julian Casablancas spews his vocals beneath a wall of multi-guitar catcalls. Although the head Stroke will likely garner the most attention, perpetual Queener Mark Lanegan's velvety pipes earmark two of Era's most booming selections: the funky "Make It Wit Chu" (complete with Temptations-like backing vocals) and the heart-racing three minutes of "River in the Road." Add the garage rock of Homme's "3's & 7's" and "Suture Up Your Future," easy pickings for most likely crossover hit, and Era Vulgaris-- hypnotically and explosively common--holds its own with any in the QoTSA discography. --Scott Holter
Customer Reviews:
Quirky robot rock with sex thrown in .......2007-07-11
Josh has put out another good album. I like it a lot more than the last two. The first Queens was classic material. The second Queens was very good as well, but the last couple of albums wasn't my personal favorite. Yeah, yeah, I understand why the artist has to change, and develope, and grow, and progress. Yata yata yata, this album is fun but I miss what Queens sounded like when they had just arose out of Kyuss. If you don't know Kyuss then do yourself a favor and find some.
Very creative.......2007-07-11
The most important thing to know about this album is that you won't like most of it after a couple listens. It takes time to appreciate the unique sound.
This album is different than anything I've ever heard. There does seem to be a Nine Inch Nails influence (especially on "Misfit Love"). Not surprising since QOTSA tour with NIN following Lullabies to Paralyze and Trent Reznor appears on a track that is not on the US version. The best song in my opinion is "3's and 7's" and it's probably the easiest to get in to. Very classic QOTSA rock. "I'm Desiginer" is an entertaining track with entertaining lyrics:"It's just like diamonds (pause) in s**t". Josh really seems to have fun singing this one. "Battery Acid" starts out with one of the most unpleasant chord progressions I've ever heard then suddenly morphs in to a fast paced, rockin' song.
The low-lights of the album would be the boring "Suture Up Your Future" which has a catchy bass riff, but thats about it. Then there's "Run, Pig, Run" which takes chaos to a whole new level. The whole album is chaotic but this song goes overboard. And what seems to be the case all to often in music, the album ends on a poor note with "Running Joke".
In my opinion, I think this album is better than Rated R, but it's in a dog fight with their Self Titled album and Lullabies for second among QOTSA albums. Those three are too close to call. Songs for the Deaf is in first and not even in sight. Congrats to QOTSA for keeping it fresh and not putting out the same record twice.
Nothing Common About This Album.......2007-07-11
At least now it can be said that Josh Homme and Queens can make a five star record without Nick Oliveri. Following Nick's departure from the band, Queens released Lullabies to Paralyze, a great record that, unfortunately, seemed only to emphasize that Oliveri was not there, from the not so subtle lyrical jabs in "Everybody Knows That You're Insane" to increased prevalence of slowed down grooves and blues, with often exceedingly slick production. Sure, the drawn out psychedelic riffs had been a QOTSA trademark from day one, but the lack of ANY punk/speed metal counterpoint was a constant, sad reminder that we were never going to hear "Millionaire" live again. Lullabies was a great record with unavoidable, bittersweet timing.
Years later many of us have gotten used to Queens without Nick, and appropriately Josh and company have unleashed a perfect record for this particular place in their career. Enough to remind of us of the good old days, and enough new stuff to remind us why this is one of the most inventive groups in rock. The production is rawer and more lo-fi than everything since their debut. The riffs and harder and the music is faster than on Lullabies. Everything we used to love. On the other hand, there's great stuff we haven't heard. Spidery guitar lines weaving in and out on songs like I'm Designer and Turning on the Screw, and a composition (3's and 7's) which throws everything Queens has done well in their career into one incredibly catchy riff rock buffet for your repeated consumption. Elsewhere, the album's two most powerful cuts, the murky "Suture up Your Future" and "Into the Hollow" show Josh having perfected his falsetto wail, and remind the listener of the difference between hard and heavy. The combination of haunting grooves and emotional vocals on these 2 cuts are worth the price of admission alone. And "Make it Wit Chu," another Desert Sessions redux, is no-frills classic rock that is as simple and honest as the original seventies soul and funk it is imitating. Lyrically, Josh continues to make strides. He's come along way since the days when "marijuana, ecstasy, and alcohol" was known as his most legendary turn of phrase. In "I'm Designer" he toes the fine line between comedy and commentary ever so well, all while singing the verses in a rhythmic pattern I can only describe as "crazy homeless bluesman meter" that reminds you everything he does is at least a little bit tongue in cheek.
With a few exceptions, almost of all this release is excellent, and it continues to reveal new layers to me each time I pop it in. And quite honestly this is probably the most rewarding aspect of Era Vulgaris. It lacks the irreplicable manic presence of Oliveri both musically and lyrically, but makes up for it with musical ingenuity Lullabies only hinted at. Whether you prefer Rated R or Songs for the Deaf as the definitive QOTSA statement, this is probably their second best album.
THEY USED TO BE GREAT NOW THEY SUCK !!!!.......2007-07-10
what kind of garbage is this.any real fan of qotsa wouldn't buy this if it was the last cd on earth.everything up to this is a 10 this is a zero.they have gone the same route as tool-time to hang it up.they made their money ,wrote great songs now just go away or write good songs guys!!!
Like Listening to Dreams About Songs.......2007-07-08
Supposedly inspired by Josh's daily drive through Hollywood, the entire album comes across as a cold robotic dreamscape where musicians just play what they're told to over and over until the song ends with no variations allowed--no humanity. From a strictly artistic perspective the songs may do an excellent job of capturing the hollowness of life and music in Hollywood, however hollow songs do not create an experience that ultimately proves worth listening to again and again.
The album opens with a pair of serviceable songs ("Turnin' on the Screw" and "Sick, sick, sick") that tease the listener of potentially stronger material to come, but nothing stronger ever materializes. Most of the songs follow a pattern that seems familiar enough, with thought provoking lyrics based on word-play and with dissonant lead guitar riffs and heavy buzzing bass/rhythm sections (ie: "I'm Designer" and "Into the Hollow"), but further listening shows that the creative instrumental flourishes and careful craftsmanship of past albums are nowhere to be found.
When "Misfit Love" begins you may find yourself bobbing your head with the groovy robot-funk of the opening riff. But about 4 minutes into the nearly 6 minute song (the longest on the album) you'll begin to wonder if the band is still playing or if they've gone to sleep and Josh is just singing over the same 5-second sound-loop over and over. Most of the album retains this same rough yet sleepy vibe. If "Lullabies to Paralyze" could be characterized as a nightmare-themed album then "EA" is easily classified as an album of empty dreams. Though Josh's lyrics occasionally deal in disturbing imagery, the music from the second half of the album is mostly pleasant and relaxing in spite of QoTSA's signature droning guitar sound. The final three tracks in particular ("Suture Up Your Future", "River in the Road", and "Run, Pig, Run") are perfect examples of this with Josh's voice and the entire instrumental ensemble blending together into one big nap-inducing mesh of noise on each of these songs. While they are all decent enough songs, placing them in succession at the close of the album makes for a very forgettable ending to "Era Vulgaris".
One of the things that made "Songs for the Deaf" such a captivating listen was the obvious influence of multiple guest musicians throughout the album. However, much like "LtP", the contributions of guest musician's are completely marginalized on "EA". Julian Casablancas of the Strokes makes a guest appearance as does former mainstay Mark Lanegan--and Trent Reznor even contributed backing vocals to one track--but you'll be hard-pressed to hear which songs they appear on let alone what vocal or instrumental sections they contribute, and Reznor's contribution was left off the album entirely. (And no, that's not Lanegan singing on "Make It Wit Chu", it's just Josh giving a practically perfect--though not nearly as seductive--impersonation.)
"Era Vulgaris" has its moments, but in the end it's all about describing the current state of the entertainment industry. Standout tracks such as "3's & 7's" and "Make It Wit Chu" purposefully underscore the complete mediocrity that permeate both the rest of "Era Vulgaris" and the current popular music scene at large.

Better known as the "White Album," this was meant to be the record that brought them back to earth after three years of studio experimentation. Instead, it took them all over the place, continuing to burst the envelope of pop music. Lennon and McCartney were still at the height of their powers, with Lennon in particular growing into one of rock's towering figures. But even McCartney could still rock, and the amazement on "Helter Skelter" was that he had vocal cords at the end. From Beach Boys knock-offs to reggae and to the unknown ("Revolution #9"), this has it all. Some records have legend written all over them; this is one. --Chris Nickson

Breaking the Barriers.......2007-06-29
This was the album where the Beatles grew up and moved into a more mature and less organised sound. That road had begun with "A Day In a Life" and "Within You Without You" and "Good Morning" in Sgt Peppers - but the Beatles were still a smart pop rock band then.
In the White Album, there is a wonderful sense of a loss of control - and yet this is still the Beatles at their creative peak. Not caring what people think, they're just playing to the maximum of their abilities. And shattering barriers.
The power of their varied personalities comes through. And different sides of their personality. Who cares about anything except the music I'm feeling now? seems to be the prevalent thought here. The White Album is the Beatles Matured - who would have imagined that the Beatles would create "Helter Skelter"? or "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"...Epic stuff that certified that the Beatles could rock. "Dear Prudence" and "Sexy Sadie" and "Blackbird" are eminently listenable. In fact - apart from some ditties and departures - the album is strikingly distinctive as a playground of sounds - it is dynamic from one end to the other and still eminently listenable and deep.
How do you define genius? This is one hard album to ignore.
Some of the Beatles Best Work.......2007-06-27
Wow...this brings back great memories. The songs are so diverse and unusual, showing their true talent and creative song writing abilities. The songs are fun and strange all at the same time. It is one of my favorites of the Beatles. When you can have "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Rocky Raccoon" and "Blackbird" in one package....what more can you ask!
It's Four Solo Albums & Still Great.......2007-06-23
This was on sale way Back in November 1968, for $5.00. That was the best five Bucks I ever spent. By 1968 after Eight years Together, The Beatles had just about seen it all, and they were very close to imploding. But, Lucky for all of us John, Paul, George & Ringo were on top of their Game and with the "White Album" they Presented their Best Songwriting and their greatest Playing over the Span of the 30 Tracks Here.
From: "Back in the USSR" all the way thro' to "Goodnight" and my favorite Track in reverse: "Revolution #9" you get a Beatle Album So Different & so Bold in it's Scope and Range from anything else they Gave us. We were Very Lucky to Have this band on the Planet from: 1964-70. It will never happen again in our Lifetime, But here it is, in all it's Glory...
There are almost 1,000 reviews posted here and About 95 Per-Cent of those Reviews are Gonna tell you how GREAT this is, and it is, Don't waste your Time Reading About this Record, BUY IT NOW.
The Beatles (The White Album).......2007-06-13
Good luck on locating this exceptional recording, sound, material stereo separation.
My second-favorite Beatles' album.......2007-06-12
This has long been my favorite Beatles' album second only to 'Revolver.' Due to its massive length, there are numerous different musical genres represented, enough to please every type of fan. It also seems to be their album with the least amount of songs played on the average oldies or classic rock station. Since there were no singles drawn from this album, these aren't songs the casual or new fan is likely to be very familiar with due to their lack of radio representation. And while some people do feel that it would have been a lot tighter and more manageable had it been just a single album, the problem is that no two people can agree on just what should have been excluded and included. (Probably my top vote for what should have been left off is the inane rubbishy "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da.")
The songs range from rough hard rock such as "Yer Blues," "Helter Skelter," and "Everybody's Got Something to Hide, Except Me and My Monkey," poppy songs such as "Martha My Dear" and "Don't Pass Me By" (the first song Ringo wrote entirely on his own), country-western-style songs like "Rocky Raccoon" (though I usually skip this one now), softer songs like "Long, Long, Long" (one of my favorites), "Julia," and "Blackbird," and songs that are just plain weird, like "Wild Honey Pie," "Glass Onion," and "Revolution 9." Being very into the avant-garde, I've always loved "Revolution 9" and have even listened to it on repeat a number of times. While it's obviously not to everyone's tastes, one has to admit that this is a fascinating musical collage. (The placement of "Good Night," the final track, right after this song has also got to be the biggest juxtaposition on any Beatles' album ever!) And since a lot of these songs were not recorded with all four bandmembers together in the studio, it often feels like a collection of their solo songs instead of a team effort by a real band. However, this also serves to demonstrate how they had grown as musicians since the early Sixties, with a unique musical style emerging for each of them. In particular we can hear how George had grown by leaps and bounds, proving he had come into his own as a great singer and songwriter. Additionally, the often stripped-down sound can feel kind of refreshing after the overproduced songs of the previous year, whose core essences had been smothered by layer after layer and overdub and overdub, which also gives a lot of them a more dated feel instead of sounding truly classic and timeless.
Above all, this is doubtless in the Top 5 of their greatest albums, and with enough musical styles to keep everyone happy, should be highly recommended to anyone interested in branching out and exploring songs that are less pop-oriented and radio-friendly than the songs on their more-widely-played albums. It's also very special to me since it was almost the last album I ever heard in this lifetime, having played it the night before I was almost killed in a very serious car accident.

A return to their former glory days, Snakes and Arrows shows this seminal prog rock band reclaiming some of the sonic territory that they'd lost over the past few years. It's not certain what contributed to this artistic rebirth, but Rush has crafted a historical and emotional odyssey that shows many both where they've been and where they're going--from the baroque soundscapes of "The Main Monkey Business," reminiscent of their earliest work to the seductive almost folkloric urgency of "The Way the Wind Blows," which is as dangerous, anxious, and prophetic as anything that Arcade Fire or Mars Volta is doing currently. Main Lyricist Neil Peart has spent the last decade getting over the death of his wife and daughter, and those tragic events have given his songwriting more depth and gravity as he explores the strengths and limitations of faith in both metaphoric and literal detail. While never didactic or ponderous, this disc is really an instruction manual for how one conducts themselves with grace and hope through unendurable pain and the vagaries of life. Gone is much of the shrillness of their earlier incarnations--Geddy Lee's trademark high pitch shrieks have mellowed considerably and Alex Lifesong's guitar playing has an assurance and freedom that can only come with age. --Jaan Uhelszki
Album Description
Anthem/Atlantic recording group Rush return with its first new collection of original material in nearly five years, entitled "SNAKES & ARROWS." The album was recorded in the fall of 2006 with Gammy Award-winner Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver) and Rush co-producing. "It's hard to describe," Geddy Lee recently told Revolver re: "SNAKES & ARROWS.""It's big, it's bold, and I think it's some of the best work we've done in years. I'm really pleased with the quality ofthe songs, and there's lots of playing on it. " Rush - Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart - will trumpet the release of "SNAKES & ARROWS" with a full-scale North American tour, the renowned trio's first since 2004's "An Evening with Rush: 30th Anniversary Tour."
Customer Reviews:
Nick Raskulinecz producing was a cool move!.......2007-07-12
Many of the thoughts have been passionately expressed, but I wanted to add that having Nick Rasckulinez (Foo Fighters, Frank Black and the Catholics, The Reunion Show) was a great change for these guys. Raw, yet sharp. Keeping things fresh while maintaining the 'core' RUSH characteristics we all love.
Objectively speaking....3 stars...but love the new album........2007-07-10
As a Rush fan, I love this album. The only album I honestly do not care for is Test for Echo, which just doesn't do it for me. Compared to Vapor trails, the sound mix is FAR superior...and I LOVE about 1/2 the songs on this album...especially the 2 instrumentals. The other 1/2 are honestly okay for Rush standards. My rating of 3 is based upon comparing it to their other albums. Going back in time, the progression from 2112 to Signals is UNREAL!! If these albums are 5's, then I have to give Snakes&Arrows a 3, which is totally fine...I still love the new with the old. Honestly, playing 3 hours a night in their mid-50's is a 10 in my book :)
Out of the Cradle--WE HOLD ON!!!!!!!.......2007-07-06
From 1996 to 2002 was just an awful time. Thinking Rush has gone away forever! When VT came, that album just hit a nerve, awoken me and millions of others! Great songs, Peaceable Kingdom, Ceiling Unlimited, Nocturne, Secret Touch etc...Just smokin'...I too, being a fan for 32 years, since 1975 and have seen them 31 times...Most of their albums took only 2-3 listens then bam..Or like Grace, Counterparts, Power Windows, 1 (one) listen and bam. Test took a little longer but great album. ..I listened to Snakes album over and over and over and over, about 25 times. At first, it was just Safe? I was somewhat disappointed.. Which disappointed me as being one of the biggest Rush fans, as I'm sure many of you say the same thing lol...I would play Snakes real Loud and sometimes real late at night at 3am after a gig in my car, "I'm in a band"...It took a very long time, It finally hit home! By that time, all the other albums have gotten out of my head...Really, I didn't listen to any others. Only one was VT, just to hear what all the people were complaining about and raving about Snakes. I liked VT! Then, I started getting hyped up for the concerts. 6/29, 7/2 and now 7/6 tomorrow! They play 9 songs off of Snakes. The wife is not musicically inclined at all, likes Billy Joel, which I do too, but also Elton, Aerosmith, Bryan Adams, get my drift? who are ok too. So, the melody is what hits home here for her. She went to the 7/2 concert and said the 2nd half was much better. I thought about it to come up with a reason. I said, maybe the lighting etc was not as good since the first half is during dusk in the "sheds". I honestly thought that they only did 5 songs, I then found out that they did 9 songs, and told her, I now realize that Rush is growing into a more viable entity in the world music, the whole world.. Not just playing noise, as many people hear and she calls it lol. But she felt the songs were just, much better, on the 2nd half of the show! Which they play 5 in a row from Snakes in the 2nd set and then Hope...I could go on and on. It is good to hear that someone that thinks that some of Rush songs are noise, are liking them so much more now. And I am someone who really eats sleeps and breaths Rush... A final note, Please, If you havn't seen Rush, you HAVE TO GO! They are really known for their Live shows and the songs just take on another identity!
Amazing.......2007-07-05
What amazes me about the new album from Rush is that they are going on nearly 35 years of being together and can still write & perform music in the manner that they do on _S&A_. After _Test for Echo_ in 1996, I feared that Rush had bottomed out. That album seemed like a band just going through the motions ("Half the World"), coasting on comfortable arrangements ("The Color or Right"), and just coming up with some bad ideas ("Virtuality," "Dog Years"). But in 2002, they released _Vapor Trails_ and made everything right again with hard-hitting, no nonsense rock mixed with great, insightful lyrics. _S&A_ expands upon the style they began on _VT_ by adding guitar solos (which were non-existent on _VT_), different sounds (mandola, mandolin, twelve-string acoustic/electric guitars, etc.), and a more lively production all around.
Songs like "Far Cry," "Working Them Angels," and "We Hold On," make the listener forget that this is the same band that did songs like "Tai Shan" and "Roll The Bones"--meaning, if those songs made you scratch your head and go, "This is Rush?"--you'll be pleasantly surprised to know that _S&A_, like _VT_, rocks harder than anything Rush has done since the 70s. Another cool aspect of the new album is the dark nature of it which harkens back to _2112_ and _Hemispheres_. "Spindrift" is a truly ominous song from the eerie opening to Geddy's vocal takes on lines like, "As the waves crash in on the western shore/it makes me feel uneasy/the spray that's torn away/is an image of the way I feel." Other highlights for me include "Bravest Face" and "Faithless" (with Ben Mink on strings), as well as "Good News First" and "The Larger Bowl." The only criticism I have is that sometimes songs go on a little bit too long and would've been more powerful if just tightened up a bit ("Armor & Sword", "The Way The Wind Blows"), but even with these arrangements, the songs have enough great stuff in them for the listener to enjoy. Lastly, Peart sprinkles his timeless, powerful lines throughout ("though we might have precious little, it's still precious"... "but i still cling to hope/and i believe in love/and that's faith enough for me"..."how many times do we chafe against the repetition/straining against a fate measured out in coffee breaks) so that the listener is always reminded that he's still 'hopeful yet discontent.'
If you loved _VT_ and saw it as a return to form, you're sure to like _S&A_. It takes a few listens to sink in, but once it does, you'll keep going back to it like all great Rush albums. If you didn't like _VT_ because of its *too* stripped down nature and cold production, _S&A_ offers more color to Rush's palate. This really is a powerful album and probably sits aside my other top Rush albums like _Hemispheres_, _Moving Pictures_, _Power Windows_, and _Presto_.
Snakes and Arrows worth your $$.......2007-07-04
I just want to add, if your looking for, FAREWELL TO KINGS, HEMISHPERES, OR COUNTERPARTS, well see those CD's. Rush is the only band that I know who have changed their style with each and every CD. Take for instance, ROLL THE BONES, add a little bit of this, experiment a little bit with that, and there you have SNAKES AND ARROWS.
Rush are musically consistent with this CD. A continual sound of, to me, quality thought in both lyrics and musicianship. There are four stages of RUSH's career, mix all four, and it turns out to be this excellent CD.
SNAKES AND ARROWS is a breath of fresh air. I purchased this, and did not waste my money. Neither will you.

Bob Seger has racked up a lot of worthy tracks over the years, but it took until 1994 for a greatest hits package to appear. Voilà. The bad news: We're missing an awful lot of songs here. Night Moves is Seger's crit-pick album, and a great place to start if you don't have any Seger at all. Next in the rankings is Stranger in Town. Otherwise, his highs are pretty scattered, which would make any best-of package a worthy investment. But if you want to get comprehensive, "Rock & Roll Never Forgets," "Fire Down Below," "Horizontal Bop," "Her Strut," "Betty Lou's Getting Out Tonight," and "Katmandu" aren't on this CD--and you'll have to go to the original albums to secure them. --Gavin McNett

After the release of their hugely successful CD, The Odyssey - and after nearly five years - Michael Romeo and his band have returned with what is already being praised as their best work to date. Paradise Lost has all the trademarks that have come to be associated with Symphony X: Incredibly intricate and powerful, yet-melodic compositions that showcase every member's unrivaled technical skill as instrumentalists. However, once again it must be said that the spotlight is squarely on the ferocious vocal force of singer Russell Allen and the almost inhuman pyrotechnics of guitarist Michael Romeo.
The North American version of Paradise Lost features a fantastic foldout and diecut digipack that was designed by Warren Flanagan, who has done art-direction for major motion picture blockbusters such as I Robot, X-Men and Blade.
This is thee guitar release of the summer!

Oh My Go#........2007-07-13
I am currently reviewing my religious affiliation due to this release, so I cannot comment any further than to say, that the Albumn is incredible.
Mindbending, and Blowing to say the least...
Paradise is not lost for the true metal listener, it is somewhere between track 5 and 9. This is the best I've heard in ...well ok, forever...
Waiting for Heaven &Hell to battle never happened.......2007-07-09
Truthfully,I was waiting for a lot more in SX's cd.In the following,I will try to tell why I feel this is lacking in creativity, drive and progressiveness.
First of all,the wait for the new cd,to fans, seemed eternal. When it was finally released, the fans expected something spectacular, what we got was something that lacked creativity. The story-line,for one is patchy, when cross-efferenced to Milton's epic novel. That's alright, but at least, give the fans something to think about and sink their teeth into. The lyrics are similar to an abridged version of a literary masterpiece.
Musically, the boys still have their chops but the song writing needed to be distributed fairly. It's basically a Allen/Romeo concept,Pinella had nothing to do with it,he's mixed out real good. That's what made The Oddessy and V,Mythology Suite great, the mixture of all writers.Allen's phrasing is too cliché,instead of flirting with other patterns,he sticks to Wings of Divine Tragedy and even totally disgusts me when in the should be apex song, Paradise lost, there is a point where he sings something like Michael Bolton. The raspiness is also annoying in some parts. The whole originality of it it lost.
Progressively,it lacks when compared to their others. It's too commercial, that's what happens when success creeps up the door,it's happened to the best. The cd is not bad,it's just not great. In a summer, when progressive music could have had 4 great releases: Dream Theater,Kamelot,Rush and Symphony X,only Rush's Snakes and Arrows proves to be the best.
Now,as for the designer of the cd packaging ,they should be slapped with a dirty ,stinky salmon fish and hung upside down. The quality of the packaging is low budget and low imagination........ouch,this review hurts me as well !!!!!!!
Remember, small minds, this review is simply my opinion based on my expectations of a great progressive group.
Paradise isn't lost on this album........2007-07-09
Symphony X has been a big part of the progressive metal movement. While not as popular as other bands in the genre, like Dream Theater, Opeth, Therion, Symphony X has still been able to make a name for themselves with their neo-classical style of playing, the superb vocals of Russell Allen, and the mesmerizing guitar work of Michael Romeo.
Symphony X has released a concept album based on the classic poem by John Milton, Paradise Lost. The album is being hyped as one of the darkest and edgiest albums Symphony X has ever made.
"Oculus Ex Inferni"
This song is an instrumental that sets the album's mood and tenor for the rest of the album. The instrumental successfully builds tension as the listener hears an epic choir.
"Set the World on Fire!"
This song is blazing fast, with precise drumming and shredding riffs and keyboards. The chorus is good. The song dives into a brilliant unison solo between Romeo and Pinnella before ending with a tremendous riff.
"Domination"
This song starts off with a bass solo before the whole band joins in. The sound continues in the style of the last track. Russell Allen gets a special mention in this track as he almost sounds crazed in a few sections of this song, with his growling vocals really taking form. The middle section of "Domination" is highlighted by another spectacular Romeo solo and some great keyboard work by Pinnella.
"Serpent's Kiss"
This song starts off a bit slow, the opening riff is slow and straight ahead. The song does pick up speed. The song, while not having the same impact as the last two tracks, is a solid track that leads into the first ballad of the album.
"Paradise Lost"
This song is the first of two ballads that help to show the softer side of Symphony X. "Paradise Lost" starts off with superb piano and acoustic guitar. The song picks up and the piano and acoustic guitar drive the melody throughout the track. Russell Allen is finally able to really sing. Mention should be made to Pinnella. While his influences on the past couple of songs haven't been as strong as in the past, he is still able to stand out with his keyboard playing.
"Eve of Seduction"
This song brings back the frantic pace from the first half of the album. Romeo has an opening solo that would make any other metal guitarist proud. The song is fast, yet brings some groove and melody to the chorus by slowing the track down a bit. Romeo pulls out one of his craziest solos on the album so far and that helps to make the track stand on the album.
"The Walls of Babylon"
This song is over eight minutes long and is the first of three epic tracks. The song is so epic that the vocals don't even come in until the second half of the song! A choir of voices is used in the first half, which helps to make the track sound very creepy. The instrumental section isn't fast, but it is very technical, with some good riff changes and bass playing. The second half is not as spectacular as the first half, but the guitar work is solid and the vocals are full of power and rage.
"Seven"
This song which is the 8th track, is the second epic, at a bit over seven minutes. The song is one of the heaviest on the album, and also has the best interlude on the album, which goes on for over two minutes. The highlight of this interlude is two Romeo solos, the return of the creepy choir, and a superb bass section.
"The Sacrifice"
This song is the second ballad and is 1 heck of a ballad. Piano and acoustic guitars are the flavor of the song. However, the acoustic guitars are more of a stand out in this track than "Paradise Lost." Allen puts in his best vocal performance of the album with an emotional performance. Romeo even gets a chance to show off his acoustic skills at the end of the track, when he plays a forty second solo with the an acoustic guitar. I feel this ballad is much better than the title track, but both are very good and short enough to not be repetitive.
"Revelations (Divus Pennae Ex Tragoedia)"
This song is the last epic track, and the longest track on the album, clocking in nearly the nine and a half minute mark. Starting with an epic sounding guitar introduction, the track shows off the band's progressive nature. Romeo plays a fast riff while Pinnella plays a piano in the background. Eventually, Allen's vocals come in and the song picks up in intensity, but the piano is continued to be played in the background. The song changes pace about two minutes in, slowing down to let the band show off their technical playing ability. The interlude comes out of nowhere, with keyboards taking over. Pinnella keyboard skills are in full form in the interlude, as he gets the chance to let loose on the piano and keyboard. Romeo, of course, gets in a great solo before the band slows down yet again. The pace picks up for its exceptional conclusion, where a lonely acoustic guitar and piano fade out as a choir sings of the apocalypse, which is a good end to Paradise Lost.
I feel this album is one of the strongest releases in 2007. The darker music makes for some interesting riffs and song ideas. While some songs don't stand out as much as others, and there is no defining epic track. Paradise Lost still stands out in the progressive metal field.
Fantastic 21st-Century Neoclassical Metal.......2007-07-08
Symphony X have single-handedly reinvented and re-energized a genre first pioneered by Yngwie Malmsteen, and brought neoclassical-style metal into a new generation. Others have covered similiar ground, but no where near as effectively and confidently, while adding progressive elements as well as a heavier, more modern style and edge.
"Paradise Lost" is a guitar-lover's dream, as guitar guru Michael Romeo turns this album into an absolute riff-fest; his ultra-heavy, complex and odd-metered riffs and fills are quite exhilarating, and this album is full of amazing solos and harmonized instrumental sections that add a sense of urgency and intesity to the entire disc.
There is no weak link in the band whatsoever, as singer Russell Allen delivers dynamic, powerful vocals, and the atmospheric and melodic keyboards are interlaced with Romeo's guitar work seamlessly, giving the album an epic, fantastic feel. Add superb and creative packaging and artwork and you have one of the best metal albums in years, yet alone in a year of other great metal releases. Well worth the wait....I can't keep this out of my CD player. Highest recommendation for any metal fan.
Unbelievable.......2007-07-07
First off, I am not going to say this cd is better than the Odyssey, TDWOT, or V because the fact is that all of those cds are incredible. Is this cd on par with those, absolutely. This cd is amazing. Unbelievable musicianship paired with incredible songwriting. Michael Romeo turns in an inhuman performance on the guitar with mindboggling rhythm work and leads that will make your head spin. The other musicians provide virtuoso performances as well, but the guitar is up front on this one. Michael Pinnela's keys though complement this one more so than on the Odyssey. He has some of his best leads and tradeoffs to date on a few of these tracks.
I will now address a few ridiculous statements by some other reviewers (notice I did not call them fans of this band because if you give this cd anything less than 4 stars; you are either deaf or accidently ordered this instead of a Bonnie Raitt cd). One reviewer would have you to believe that Symphony X is now prog's Morbid Angel or Deicide. This cd is not Satanic. It is a darker themed cd that tells stories. If that offends you, then go buy a Stryper cd. The other criticism I read is over vocals. Apparently, that person didn't listen to the cd either. There are no "death metal" vocals on this cd. Russell Allen provides quite a bit of a more aggressive tone, but he also uses his higher tone on the lighter songs. If anything, he shows diversity that we have not seen before. I count that as a plus. As a matter of fact, there is a lot of diversity on this cd that we have not seen before which makes the negative reviews on this one so puzzling to me. In addition to still getting the orchestration, different time changes, symphonic choruses and everything that makes Symphony X; we also get more bass and drum solos, even an acoustic, classical style solo. What more do you want from this band? If V or the Odyssey are so unattainable, then go listen to those cds. I will enjoy the newest masterpiece by the band.
In summary, this cd is amazing. If you listen to the naysayers, you will miss out on the best metal release of the year from the best metal band around period. It took them 5 years to put it together, and the results show despite what some have written. Thank you Symphony X. I hope to see you on tour.

The Best Band on Earth....PERIOD!.......2007-07-09
It doesn't surprise me at all that this album is as incredible as it is. Musically, it is a masterpiece (and I'll be damned if the instrumental mid-section of The Dark Eternal Night isn't some of the most insane stuff ever layed down...Much respect to simply being able to remember the sequence of all the meter changes!!) I would say it is their best, but everytime they put out a new album I say that, so it's their best until their next best one is released. Dream Theater continue to impress fans and fellow musicians and deserve all the success and growth they have achieved over the past 20 years. I've been a fan since '92 and I've never been disappointed.
If you are new to Dream Theater's music, this album is a great "throw you to the wolves" introduction. Great album...a definite must own!!
Rush to buy this album!.......2007-07-09
This album has a new producer in some songs they sound more like Rush who the producer also produces. The singers (James) voice isn't as dynamic as previous albums. Love the album but sound isn't as good as previous albums the new producer has taken away the dynamic features that I loved in this band, strong vocals, sort of blended all of the instruments into a flat sound. I know this band sounds much better in person. Nothing wrong with the bands part just the production.
Progressive Theater at it's best.......2007-07-08
This new effort from Dream Theater is easily their most balanced album since A Change Of Seasons. I noticed most of the reviewers here are being a little too picky on some of the songs or absolutely have no clue what the story is about. This is just one fan's take, but this is one hell of an album.
1. In The Presence Of Enemies (Part 1) is a 9 minute epic. The lead-in to the song is killer and it's the perfect teaser for the even more epic second part.
2. Forsaken has a nice intro from Ruddess, my only mini complaint is that James LaBrie sings the song a tad too slow. Still, a very sold track.
3. Constant Motion has a really cool vibe with Portnoy's double bass runs in sync with Petrucci's strong riffing. Yes, Portnoy's vocal abilities is a little rough but it compliments this song so well with LaBrie's highs.
4. The Dark Eternal Night reminds me of 'Honor Thy Father' from Train Of Thought. It's just really cool, fast, and strong aggressive vocals. Jordan has a little fun during the mini breaks of this song too.
5. Repentance is the most cerebral song this band has ever done. To those who dont understand the concept, listen to 'The Glass Prison' from Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence, then 'This Dying Soul' from TOT, and 'The Root Of All Evil' from Octavarium. To the one that said there were vocal samples, it's all spoken word from the likes of Steve Vai, Satch, Chris Jericho, Jon Anderson, and Neal Morse to name a few. A beautiful and emotional song from beginning to end.
6. Prophets Of War gets right to the point with a very good sounding vocal from LaBrie telling his story of war's greed and senseless killing of innocent people. Listen close and you'll hear 100 people in chorus making this song even more personal on some levels.
7. Ministry Of Lost Souls is a Dream Theater classic. It has the speed playing, the slower balladry (especially in the beginning) and the tight vocals. A sweet piece of music nearly 15 minutes in length.
8. In The Presence Of Enemies (Part 2) closes out this epic album with a very dark story of the Dark Master. This 16 and a half minute journey takes the listener to his/her deepest darkest past selling their soul to the Dark Master only to ask for it back. What a way to close out an album.
Return of the Kings of Prog Metal.......2007-07-08
June was a fantastic month for progressive metal. Symphony X, Kamelot, and Dream Theater all released new albums - in fact the same day for Dream Theater and Kamelot. (Competition?) All three releases are very strong, but Systematic Chaos by Dream Theater shows that they are still the kings of progressive metal. As I have stated before, I only write 5-star reviews, since I can't be bothered to write reviews for anything less. With this philosophy, I didn't write a review for Octavarium, which was good but not great. There was nothing on Octavarium that struck me - plenty of prog maybe, but not enough metal.
Systematic Chaos isn't quite as heavy as Train of Thought (is anything?), but it certainly is heavy. The only song not loaded with crunch is "Repentance", which has a great Pink Floyd feel and is probably the best of the 12 step songs. "Repentance" has some beautiful backing guitar and a super solo by John Petrucci. The album is overall rather dark. While not a concept album, a number of the songs have lyrics reminiscent of 1950s horror flicks. "Constant Motion" is well titled with nothing but pure energy and makes great use of distorted vocals. Heavy riffs fill "The Dark Eternal Night" from front to back. The ending, in particular, is exceptionally mean with Petrucci crunching away at the bottom and Rudess going absolutely nuts on top with the continuum - prog metal heaven! For me, Jordan Rudess does help set DT apart. Most keyboard players add atmosphere or the lighter touches. Rudess can do this as well, but he can rip it up as nastily as Petrucci, which is as nasty as it gets. (They remind me of Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore dueling it out at solo time.) "Forsaken" and "Prophets of War" are short, heavy, and very catchy. "Prophets of War" has some Queen-like backing vocals and calls for a change in administration of the US presidency, which I certainly support. "The Ministry of Lost Souls" is the lyrical standout with a poignant story of successful rescue for the victim while the hero loses his life. "In The Presence of Enemies" is the epic piece, beginning and ending the album in grandiose but dark style.
Just when I was concerned that Dream Theater was possibly losing their edge, they come back with a bolt of lightning. I can't wait to see them on tour. VIP ticket for Cleveland!
If you liked Train of Thought, this is your album.......2007-07-08
DT fan since their early beginnings as Majesty. Have all the albums, seen most of the tours, have all the live DVD's. Learned most of the Petrucci licks, at least the ones acessible to mere mortals. This album crushes, lots of technical stuff, and heavy at the same time. My jury is still out on Prophets of War, I'm hoping it's more of an issue awareness kind of song like the stem cell research song on Six Degrees, and not just some moveon.org type Dixie Chix baloney. Otherwise great over all, especially the two part intro/outro track, and the "monster" themed songs, Forsaken and Dark Eternal Night. aka NADS.
Anyway, there's usually two kinds of people, DT fans and non-DT fans, and if you're a fan you'll like it, if you're not, you won't. But if you're not into DT yet, my best analogy would be that if you liked Rust in Peace by Megadeth, this is where to try to get into the Dream Theater.
