The best of Hi-Fidelity.......2005-05-28
This is my favorite of the series. Tough roots from start to end.
guidance's best compilation.......2004-11-29
If you're familiar with Guidance records, chances are you've got one of their Hi-fidelity Dub sessions compilations...I think they're up to number 5 or something. In fact a couple of these tunes can be found on other guidance releases, 'Horny dub' for instance.
This however is quiet different compared to those releases. Roots combination is one of the rootiest contemporary pieces of reggae/ dub to come out in recent times. It brings you back to the 1970's when Lee Perry et al were experimenting/ revolutionising dub music.
The album features a number of MC's including Sluggy Ranks, who espouses some very conscious lyrics on 'Nah Bow Down' as does Ruffscot on 'Greedy for the dollar'. There's a monstrous dub on 'Wicked a go dub it'.
Simply this a very good piece of work. The rythems are solid and the appearances of various MC's provide that rootsy feel. They don't go way over the top on the dubs but keep it nice and tight. This is my favourite Guidance record...greatness through and through.
houstonsweb1.......2003-03-19
This is a pretty good CD. This is what I call cruz-n reggae. Real nice, getting with friends, BB Q-N, or just plain jumping in your car cruz-n. It's a very good price, so get it and enjoy. All praises to Jah. Out.
Dub Inna Fine Retro Style.......2002-05-25
Well-produced, sophisticated yet rootsy dubs -- lots of good 21st century touches without sounding slick or overproduced. Bass n' drum firmly in the driver's seat with way-cool effects and riddims that will make your head bob like one of those dolls you see on car dashboards.
This is the way all modern dub recordings should be ... a deep-roots, bubbling, smoking, wallshaking successor to the classics of the 70s and early 80s. Nearly an hour's worth of slinky dreadiness. Go for it!
Great Riddims.......2002-03-27
Very good dub cd put together by the masters at Guidance. It seems like you just can't go wrong with that label. Especially the Hi-Fi dub sessions, and this one is no different.

Album Description
Guidance Recordings returns with the fifth volume in this acclaimed series showcasing the very best in modern dub music. Hi-Fidelity Dub Sessions: Chapter 5 is an inspired collection of future roots riddims featuring contributions from downbeat masters Thievery Corporation, Sterotyp, G-Corp, Ralph Myerz and the Jack Herren Band and many more. Here they join forces to deliver an album of heavyweight sounds that fuse technology with time honored tradition to propel the Jamaican art form know as dub safely into the 21st Century. The subtropical selection will appeal to reggae purists as well fans of the dubwise sounds of trip hop, 2 step, drum and bass , dancehall, and downtempo grooves. It's true what dem say " The sound's sweeter through the echo chamber!"
Customer Reviews:
This CD is tons of fun........2005-09-29
I'm with the reviewer from Chicago. My car was broken into and they grabbed 100 of my favorite discs and I actually replaced this one before many of the others... classic mellow dub reggae rules, Scientist, King Tubby, Sly & The Revolutionaries... but sometimes it's necessary to pick up the tempo. I love to crank this disc while driving home after a night out. But yeah, it's good enough that I have actually been willing to pay for it twice! (Also check out 300% Dynamite for more up-tempo dancehall/reggae fun!)
WHAT ?????.......2004-01-27
This CD rocks! I'm not sure what the other two "reviewers" are talking about, but this release nicely fits with the other 4 previous installments. this one may be a bit more dancehall, but what is wrong with that? in fact, I would rate it 10 stars if I could.
What happen with the quality?.......2004-01-22
If you take-off the remix of Thievery Corporation it will be difficult to have a positive opinion of this CD. Maybe you can be hooked if you know the taste of Sola Rosa or the talent of Peter Kruder(producer of one track) but this is not a good dub selection. The other four sessions were better in all the senses.
It's the fist record of Guidance that I do not want to recommend,
well, a black point in the superb catalogue of the label.
Great series, horrible installment.......2004-01-15
Although this is my first review of an Amazon product, I've been shopping here for ~6 years, and have an extensive collection of music.
While that shouldn't convince you that I know what I'm talking about, the fact that I loved the first 4 installments (plus the Roots Combination CD), and grew up rocking out to great dub might help. ...
When the Hi-Fi Dub sessions came out, it was precisely what I had been hoping for in a studio CD for years. As I said, the first 5 CDs from in this series are *great*, especially if you've been looking for that fusion of old school dub and modern downtempo - *perfect* background/lounge/mellow house party music.
However, this CD (hi fi dub 5) is _horrible_ in comparison. It's not at all rootsy, and sounds ridiculously dancehall-ish. I am blown away that they chose to release this on the otherwise great hi-fi dub label. Do yourself a favour...buy the first 5 CDs, and stop there...this was a waste of my money.

Customer Reviews:
amazing.......2003-06-02
As a huge fan of the old school Marley/Tosh/Wailer/Culture school of late 60s - late 70s reggae, it's alwasy touch to find somethign new that captures the bass-heavy tight grooves. This is a totally modern take (electronica dub but with SOUL) on that old stuff. Very cool. I listen to this a lot.
Very nice!.......2003-01-06
I pretty much bought this cd because it was a compilation that had "Superstylin'" on it which is my favourite Groove Armada song, so I figured it'd be nice to see what else falls under the category. The minute I pushed play I was sucked into this groovy sort of place that I don't hear from quite often enough. I'd say anyone who likes Derrick Carter or Moonshine label artists could appreciate this cd. Nice reggae/drum&bass/house/psychedelic sounds brewing with this one.

Hi-Fidelity Dub Sessions,Vol.3.......2003-01-24
Landmark! Masterpiece! Speechless. This was the highlight of my new music discoveries for years. A friend burned this cd and handed it to me with a grin. I was so impressed I felt obligated to buy an original just to pay my humble dues. If you like dub or reggae and you can only afford one cd for 5 years, buy it.
Contemporary dub that keeps an eye on the past.......2002-03-13
This album is beautiful! Laid-back, blissed-out, head-noddingly beautiful. All the artists involved are set on taking dub into the future but reverently keep one eye on the past glory of Jamaican dub. The album strays into other area's (downtempo, etc.) but it doesn't go too far, just enough to lend a sense of diversity that adds up to one fine, cohesive, whole. There aren't too many compilations that can pull that off.
Brand New Roots.......2002-01-31
If you're wandering aimlessly in search of a record that could recreate the excitement of your cosmopolitan late night excursions, you might want to lend both ears to the third installment of the Hi-Fidelity series. As other compilations in the chill-out genre have by now ran out of steam, recycling the same 5 year old tracks heard everywhere else, Guidance records keeps digging out true musical gems. While "Lounge"(featuring tracks by the Dining Rooms, Thievery Corporation, Soulstance, etc...) plays off as the sexy, groove laden soundtrack for metropolitan cocktail-sipping hipsters, "Dub Session" is a more intimate affair, delivering this time a much
more progressive selection (featuring the works of Cotton Belly, Tosca, Boozoo Bajou, DJ Krushet al...), preserving the deep roots of dub, but thrusting the bass-heavy rhythms forward into the new millennium. Both albums and their predecessors in the series, simply stand out as the best collection of their kind."
dub-e-licious.......2001-12-16
In a race for night life, balmy island breezes, the latest entry in the Hi-Fidelity Dub Sessions stakes crosses the finish a distance first. Not to belittle the 2 previous entries, but they just aren't up to the challenge (believe me, I've got the whole Guidance Recordings family). You get your basic head nodding dub, spiced up with some dancehall, 2-step, downtempo chillout, and grooving vibes. Opening with Cotton Belly - "Tempest Dub" you're well on your way to some kinda' reggae heaven. The menu just gets better. Tack on cuts from Tosca, Bacuuzzi, Boozoo Bajou, Daddy Ous, and DJ Krush. Hip enough to include today's electronic tweakings without a second's thought. The end nicely wrapped with the classic "Ain't No Sunshine" reworked by Stryke. Just desserts served up. Hold that note a little longer? Yes indeed.
Sonah Kromah.......2001-11-30
I think this is an excellent selection for reggae lover like me. I give it a five stars. Track #9 Tout le monde by Daddy Ous is the best. Keep more coming. Thank you sonah.

Customer Reviews:
Start with Volume 2.......2002-04-19
The idea of exposing dub to the masses with fresh faces and mixes is a great idea, but Volume 2 of this series is better than this one. Start there, and if you dig it, know that this volume isn't all bad, but doesn't push the envelope anywhere near as much as vol. 2. Mostly for completists of the series or die-hard dub heads. Casual or new listeners? Go see volume 2.
Great Dub Introduction.......2002-01-15
This is a great album that almost anyone can get into, not just fans of the genre or electronic music. I play it all the time at the store I work at, and it's great for setting a mellow mood. I constantly have people ask me what is playing, and if we sell it. I would definetely check it out.. actually, the whole HI-FI series is pretty incredible. Almost everything Guidance Recordings puts out is worth listening to.
A solid dub album.......2001-07-23
This album is good for a few kicks, and it will definitely be staying in my collection. I really wish I could give it 3.5 stars, because while it is a nice, tight dub album, there are a few shortcomings here. Notably, the tech influence is a little edgy on the more rootsy tracks, and being a roots fan I couldn't quite dig it as much as I would like. Not only do Augustus Pablo and Lee Perry blow this out of the water, so do King Tubby, Mad Professor and Sly and Robbie.
The one very high note on this album is the final cut. "Free marijuana"....indeed, brotha, indeed.
Best dub in years.......2000-12-29
W O W ! I've been listening to dub since I was a kid. And I tell you.. This is one of the most serious brainsmashing heavy dub pieces released for years. If you like the samples you will definately like the whole album. Highly Recommended!
Best dub album of the past 20 years.......2000-06-01
This album is, without a doubt, the best reggae dub album to be released since 1980. The only thing this album can be compared to is the great King Tubby, Lee Perry, or Scientist recordings that have been re-released by Blood and Fire or Pressure Sounds. This is the only dub album that captures the feeling of the early dub masters while sounding completely new and original. The only thing I can really say is that if King Tubby were still alive, this is the kind of album he should be making. Dub reggae with crystal clear sound.

Solid offering of dub for the masses.......2002-03-02
This isn't a hardcore old-school set of dub, but it's a great place to start. Tracks put together by some heavy electronic music cats with dub-mindedness, there's more than enough good stuff on here worth your dollar. Some of it isn't as mindful of tradition as I'd have liked, but the takes are fresh, and entertaining all around. A great CD for mood, venues and just hanging out.
Another Amazing title by Guidance Recordings.......2002-01-15
Wow, this one is even better than the 1st! Parts of it distinctly sound like Tosca's Opera, while other parts are more reminiscent of K & D. Overall a very smooth and chillin sound, that definetely keeps me coming back. Great atmospheric music, and good pumped up, too.
High Fidelity indeed..........2002-01-13
Speaking of the genre, this one really hits the spot.
Keeping up the reputation of its predecessor, this CD puts you somewhere on the Caribbean Islands and leaves you to chill out. Being almost impossible to be otherwise when you have Richard Dorfmeister for one of the supervisors of the compilation, this CD basically features only great tracks.
If you like anything from Kruder + Dorfmeister, Tosca, Thievery Corporation, Beanfield, Uptight Sound System or Dual Tone (Paul Hunter), you're bound to like this one to. I personally like the first track best because the ocean, sand, setting sun, seabreeze, seagulls, fresh grilled fish and some good wine afterwards with a decent smoke just pour out of it.
It just gets you in a good mood, that's it!
Caribbean in binary!!!
This is it ! Brainsmashing Future-Primitive Roots.......2001-08-02
I've looked long and hard to find a solid modern dub album or compilation....most are weak or miss the point by being too modern. This album hits the bullseye. Solid heavy mix, lots of brainsmashing echo, enough modern effects to keep it fresh, and solidly connected to the roots ya love....Tubby, Scratch, LKJ, Rockers.
Some stuff is totally connected to the bass, drums, horns old school Rasta roots...a few of the cuts are excellent modern Tosca-stylee.
The new school finally "gets" it...and at least its available through more than just total underground or local channels.
Hit the bid. Raspect. One love.
top notch!.......2001-06-22
this is the most consistent and outstanding modern dub compilation i have ever heard, and i have a pile of them! 10 out of 12 cuts are stand-outs in my opinion. hi-fidelity dub sessions lives up to its name, with excellent sound quality as well as music. i cannot praise this disc too highly. if you own only 3 dub discs, make sure this is one of them! these artists are contemporary, not old jamaicans. don't let that stop you from buying this excellent disc.
